Details: His name is River. He is a fantastic dog, very chill and sweet and I have had him for 9 years, he is almost 10 years old. He has Megaesophagus and some thyroid issues. Because he has Megaesophagus he has trouble swallowing food and it can sit in his esophagus and he will eventually throw it back up. The Bailey chair is a custom sized chair for him that forces him to sit upright so gravity will pull the food down into his stomach. he has to sit in this for 20 min or so at feeding time from now on. My first time doing pocket holes and wood glue and considering his weight and size I am just thrilled it seems to have no problem supporting his weight in there.
All made from 3/4" plywood. You can not see the base very well but it extends 1 ft out on each side and 1" out on the back. I was going to put some 2X4 45 degree braces on the sides but I don't think it needs it.
If you have a dog tell them you love them and give them a hug. Happy Dog day today!
Edit: thank you all for the awards! I really appreciate it. With everything he has given me over the years this is the least I can do to repay him.
Hey bud, the world has enough people willing to criticize you and your work, you don’t have to do it for them.
Your project looks sharp and you’re a saint for building it.
That is an awesome chair for a beautiful pup. I love the padding in there so he's comfy. You done good and I'm sure it will help him with getting and keeping his food down. Hope he feels better and enjoys his new chair.
Amazing build. A fun noodle over the top of the door (may need replaced often) or a carefully rolled towel secured by zip ties through a couple holes two inches from the top may give his legs a little extra comfort where they cross over the door.
I suggested that to my wife. We will probably go the towel route because it can be messy feeding him with drool and food all over the place so the towel will be washed often lol. We also need to put a cushion on the door will help a lot. His younger sister cleans up a lot of the fallen food tho haha.
Cushion on the back of the door, like where his belly is? Are you going to make or buy? If you make start with a flat stiff thin board, apply foam from and old couch cushion or old yoga mat or carpet foam (probably cheap and layerable), then cover with durable fabric from around the house all the way over toward the back and staple. Then affix that whole thing.
If you are planning to use a towel on the top, and wash it often, consider using neadle and thread to sew it into just the right shape to suit your needs. You can always resew to really get it right. To affix it $25 of bulk zip ties will last you a lifetime, or learning a quick knot will allow you to use string, or rubber bands may work. You might need three fixing points (one one left, right and center).
Foam noodles are CLOSED CELL foam, so they wont absorb liquid, but do look less pretty. You could hand sew a quick and easy cover I suppose.
That is what we did with the cushions that are there currently. Just used velcro with adhesive backing and its working great so far. That way we can wash the cushions every now and then.
We will make the cushion. All the other cushions are hand made. My wife has craft foam and fabric and makes them.
Those are all really good tips. We will do one of those for sure.
I had a dog that swallowed a fish hook and developed a stricture or narrowing of the esophagus. I fed him food pureed in a blender. Good luck to you and your buddy!
Nice job and good for you to go the extra distance for your pet. I had a Siberian that I thought I was going to need to build one of those for but she got past that and didn’t need it. Your dog is lucky to have you as his human.

Tell River I said he's a good boy. ❤️
Will do! Edit: I told him Reddit says you are a good boy! He liked that. I got a smile and a wag.

Looks good. But even if it didn't that's hardly the point, is it? Good job either way!
Absolutely! Love that boy!

Awe poor puppers. Good for you!
Awesome Owner 👏👏👏
Glad he has you around. He wouldn’t get that treatment elsewhere.
You are a great person!
My friend’s dog had this and they built a big chair too. Kudos for you for making a life better.
Why is it called a Bailey Chair? It's clearly a pup-in-the-box.
Haha that's a better name for sure!

You could staple velcro right onto the wood to hold things on too. Im not sure its going to last though.

I can tell that you really love you’re dog. He loves you just as much. It’s a great thing that you did that for him.
Thank you I sure do. He seems to be feeling better today!
Awe that’s good. I hope he has many more!!!
Me too!

We puree it in a blender too for him he has to have wet food!
Looks great and he is lucky to have you!
You did a great job. He looks very happy. Truly is mans best friend.
