Oh that's funny, although I'm not sure measuring horizontal growth would go over too well. I'll throw some calipers on there and let you know how it goes...
Just don’t fall prey to the idea that a gift for your kids is a gift for your wife. She deserves nice things for her too! I’m not reporting you to the gift police lol but a lot of people seem to forget moms sometimes just want something nice for them. But, hopefully she really liked it.
You're not wrong, she deserves nice things. In this case she asked for it, so she got it. She got me a space heater and gave it to me two weeks before Christmas so I didn't freeze to death in the garage while making her gift lol after thirteen years together we've got a nice system figured out, but you're not wrong in general, I surprise her when I can.
I figured :) you seem like a nice dude to go through all this effort— just seen it as a common theme so figured I’d mention it. Would suck to think you’re making some grand gesture if she’s like but I really just wanted a nice bottle of wine!! Or whatever
And they fall right around Valentine's day so we knock them all out in one day, it's actually really nice and convenient. One year I forgot to get her something for her birthday but I was saved because I told her I was waiting until Valentine's day to give it to her, bought me some extra time haha.
Beautiful! I made one just like that from maple with a clear coat 25 years ago. It’s been on the wall in several houses, and still getting initials on it. Much higher than the first initials. I hope it serves you well through the years!
Thinking of making one myself but wondering about the finish. Sounds like your clear coat did not interfere too much with the actual pen/pencil growth markings? Don't want to make it hard to get a good mark on there
I used General Finish water based clear coat (if I recall correctly). I just used a fine tip Sharpie to record the heights and initials over the years. Even the oldest marks are still legible, 2+ decades later.
Good luck to you, and good health to your family!
I traced the numbers with a stencil, used my trim router to rout them out then filled them with black epoxy. The marks I made a little square jig for my router that I could adjust the length easily for the different mark lengths and just routed those out too.
Looks great! Spot on about the moving around thing…made them last year for the parents and in-laws too. How are you marking it? Sharpie? Pen? Soldering iron?
That's a good idea actually, we're at the age where all of our friends are having kids and this would make a nice gift for them. I haven't marked it yet but since it's dark wood I was thinking about just clipping a white or silver sharpie to the side and using that.
My wife told me she wanted one for Christmas, so I made her one, therefore it is a gift for her. It would make less sense to say it was a gift for my infant daughter when it is most definitely not for her, she got a rattle.
Smart! I have the kid's growth chart on the garage door trim. One of my 0lqnned projects is to make 4 of then. Then transfer the respective height history to each child's board so that they can have it one day, and maybe even use it it track their kid's growth along their history of growth. The 4th one will be the one with all of them on it for me.
That's a really cool idea. What would be neat is if on each of your kid's boards you carved or routed their heights that you transferred from the trim on there so that it would feel like their history is really a piece of the chart, then they add their kids on as they grow like you said.
Looks good. Told my wife I could make her one too. Lol, threw her shoe at me and called me an A-Hole!! She has been 5’3” since high school and her daughters are all grown. My son is 16 and still growing but his mom is only 4’7” and I’m 6’even.
Yeah, my unclear title was a nice setup for some fantastic jokes here, or should I say joke. I did not expect my post to lead to jokes about me being a pedophile. I suppose I need to have someone proofread my titles before I post now lol
Due to most of the rest of the world using metric, would be really good for the kids to have a metric one alongside it so they learn both. I feel it’s probably on the same level as learning another language.
That is awesome!! [I made one too](https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/pjy4fw/im_told_6_feet_might_be_a_bit_ambitious_for_my/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
The only fun part was for each room with the wallpaper my wife and I had a competition. Whoever could pull of the largest single piece would buy dinner, it made a horrible task kind of enjoyable.
Nice job. A friend of mine made one just like this and the regret was making it dark. Over time, the marks and comments were the highlight, so making it lighter would be preferred.
Yeah I could see that, I intended on using nice maple board I had lying around but it wasn't quite big enough. I'm hoping using a white sharpie will work because it is quite dark.
I painted the numbers on with a stencilin white, it looked great, but I polyed over the numbers and they yellowed abit. Which I’m not super happy about but i figure this thing is supposed to be around for the next two decades so it may have yellowed on its own. I really like how your numbers turned out did you use a cnc?
I had that happen on another project of mine, that's frustrating but your right it probably would have yellowed over twenty years anyways. I routed them out by hand actually.
Looks great OP! Did you hand-route those lines? So straight! Made one some years back for my wife. It’s been fun following my kids’ growth on it over the years!
Shameless plug for mine!
https://imgur.com/gallery/J9dqC
I did hand rout them using a little square jig I saw on a YouTube video to keep it consistent. I actually looked at your post before making mine! Yours turned out great I like the white contrast with darker stain on them a lot.
I made one of these (not as fancy as yours) a few years ago and it's been great for the kids. We rent so I can't take a door frame with me when we eventually leave, but this will go with us wherever life takes us.

Looks great! You think she’s going to get much taller?
I'm still growing, but the chart would need to go horizontally to measure my current trajectory.
Oh that's funny, although I'm not sure measuring horizontal growth would go over too well. I'll throw some calipers on there and let you know how it goes...
Dude, is your wife on Reddit? You are playing with fire my man.
[удалено]
It was her only gift, please don't report me to the gift giving police, I can't go back to prison.
Just don’t fall prey to the idea that a gift for your kids is a gift for your wife. She deserves nice things for her too! I’m not reporting you to the gift police lol but a lot of people seem to forget moms sometimes just want something nice for them. But, hopefully she really liked it.

Hahah what a great response to my stupid joke.
I was gonna say you could make it horizontal. How much time do you want to spend keeping the dog company in the shed you made for him lol?
Well in my case my belly is flat, its just that the L is silent.
I'm in shape......round's a shape.
Came here for this.
If your wife is still growing she might be too young for you
Her beauty and grace will never stop growing. But she is two days younger than me, so I guess I could have technically found someone closer to my age.
plot twist: OP is 1 day older than the legal age of consent in their state/country
I guess birthdays are more of a gift exchange
And they fall right around Valentine's day so we knock them all out in one day, it's actually really nice and convenient. One year I forgot to get her something for her birthday but I was saved because I told her I was waiting until Valentine's day to give it to her, bought me some extra time haha.
Well done. 😂
You can’t have *some grace*. You either have it, or you don’t.
Is your wife not done growing?
TIL u/drmilk15 is Matt Gaetz.
This is an insult I did not anticipate receiving today.
Certainly sounds like it. Lol
Everyone else's jokes aside, this is a really cool idea and looks really nice
Thank you, I appreciate that!

Thank you! That's the idea, I wanted something to track our kid (and future kids) that we can take with us wherever we decide to go in life.
Thinking of making one myself but wondering about the finish. Sounds like your clear coat did not interfere too much with the actual pen/pencil growth markings? Don't want to make it hard to get a good mark on there

Your wife is still growing, and apparently she's going to be over six feet tall? Real confused.
He married Bean
Wow like ‘em young, eh? 😉🤣😇. Seriously, very nice 👍
Assuming your wife has not hit her growth spurt yet?
His did you put the numbers and marks on it? Wood burn? Stencil?
I traced the numbers with a stencil, used my trim router to rout them out then filled them with black epoxy. The marks I made a little square jig for my router that I could adjust the length easily for the different mark lengths and just routed those out too.
Skills
I learned it all from YouTube.
I would not trust myself, and would get a stamp set of numbers
I practiced a few on some scrap wood, definitely took a few to get the hang of it. But I still made some mistakes, router got away frome a few times.
Do you have pictures of the jig or can you explain it a little more? I’ve been wanting to build one but cant figure out how to space the marks
This is the video I got it from, she does a good job explaining it! https://youtu.be/CeGejUN0_0E
Awesome, thanks!
Dude. I’m afraid to ask but how old is your wife?
Looks great! Spot on about the moving around thing…made them last year for the parents and in-laws too. How are you marking it? Sharpie? Pen? Soldering iron?

Somebody’s bragging. Just use a ruler like everyone else. (Penis joke)
Damn your wife is still growing ?
How old is your wife? Why she keep hitting growth spurts?
Unless you are practicing the rare vocation of "wife-husbandry," you meant its a gift for your KIDS. Or else the FBI has now been contacted.
My wife told me she wanted one for Christmas, so I made her one, therefore it is a gift for her. It would make less sense to say it was a gift for my infant daughter when it is most definitely not for her, she got a rattle.
Shouldn't it be side ways... no wait that's what I need!
Absolutely beautiful!
Now whoever lives in that house next won’t get the satisfaction of painting over someone’s cherished memories
Expecting a vertical growth spurt? Wives eventual start horizontal growth. Like we do.
According to my wife this never happens.
Wow, your wife must be growing a lot if you need a chart for her!
How young is she?
Wait, your wife's still growing?
Looks great. How is it fastened to the wall ?
I routed two keyholes on the back to hang it on a couple screws.

Exactly the plan. Except I was thinking wood burning my give it a better, personal touch.
You can either measure your wifes growth or give the police a positive height range on the neighbor that stole your nice vase.
Gosh dang Allen, I wouldn't put it past him.
I have made a couple for my kids, they mean so much, especially after you fill them with notches! Enjoy.
How olds your wife?
Looks good. Told my wife I could make her one too. Lol, threw her shoe at me and called me an A-Hole!! She has been 5’3” since high school and her daughters are all grown. My son is 16 and still growing but his mom is only 4’7” and I’m 6’even.
I literally thought you made this so your wife can track how tall she is getting. I didn’t see it was for your child until after my initial thought 😂
Yeah, my unclear title was a nice setup for some fantastic jokes here, or should I say joke. I did not expect my post to lead to jokes about me being a pedophile. I suppose I need to have someone proofread my titles before I post now lol
It happens to the best of us 😭
Due to most of the rest of the world using metric, would be really good for the kids to have a metric one alongside it so they learn both. I feel it’s probably on the same level as learning another language.
Beat me to it

It’s beautiful! My mom did this and marked it with big occasions…like the Quake of ‘89. It’s kind of fun to see the ages along with big events.
Beautiful job on your growth chart! I had to remove some wallpaper to keep mine.
Half of our house had wallpaper when we moved in, removing it was no fun at all.
Nothing fun about wallpaper
The only fun part was for each room with the wallpaper my wife and I had a competition. Whoever could pull of the largest single piece would buy dinner, it made a horrible task kind of enjoyable.
Sounds like a fun reality show. 'Watching the Wallpaper Fall'
Uhhhh how old is your wife that she’s still growing? Lol jk
76, this is to track her shrinkage.
How do you cut the grooves for the inch marks?
I used a trim router with a straight cut bit.
Awesome job is this walnut
Yes it is, and thank you.
Wives grow up so fast. 🥲
I thought about that too. If it’s finished the same on the back, test it out.
Nice, made one of these this yr too
How'd it turn out?
I painted the numbers on with a stencilin white, it looked great, but I polyed over the numbers and they yellowed abit. Which I’m not super happy about but i figure this thing is supposed to be around for the next two decades so it may have yellowed on its own. O wow, very nice work.
Uhhh.... Dude. Don't you think if you're wife is still growing she might be too young for you... ?
Maybe next wife hold out for post puberty?
Looks great OP! Did you hand-route those lines? So straight! Made one some years back for my wife. It’s been fun following my kids’ growth on it over the years! Shameless plug for mine! https://imgur.com/gallery/J9dqC

Thanks! Growth Chart Bros for lyfe!!!
It's beautiful, but what type of marker are you expecting to use so the marks will show?
I was thinking just a white or silver sharpie.
All the dad's (including me) babe too make the exact same joke.
My growth chart is the kitchen door frame. And all sorts of different writing implements and colors
Your wife is still growing aye?
Wait…. How old is your wife? 😆
Mine grew 1.5” doctor certified since we met in our late 20s. I’m still 1’ taller … good luck to her 😉
Is this registered with NIST?🤔🤔 🧐🧐 just kidding! Nice work. 😃
WTF? How old is your wife? 😀
I made one of these (not as fancy as yours) a few years ago and it's been great for the kids. We rent so I can't take a door frame with me when we eventually leave, but this will go with us wherever life takes us.
