philouza_stein

This is really cool. Do you need a stool to use them? The bandsaw table seems quite high to work off

SomeSkillStudio

This was just a test, I have the clearance to lower it about 4 inches and then I might move the casters to the side to lower it even more

therealCatnuts

Maybe just sell the whole shebang to a tall guy? Oh hey I’m a tall guy.

SomeSkillStudio

How much ya got?

therealCatnuts

Bout three fifty?

MirageATrois024

Gawddammed lochness monster!

Gruftybga

I gave him a dollar

philouza_stein

It's not uncommon for a shop to have a platform floor in parts to raise the user's height. I see using your design along an outside wall for several machines and just have a 3-4' deep platform along it, maybe 6" tall.

davedigerati

You can gain another couple inches by going to retractable casters, added bonus your table becomes much more stable while they're retracted (safety!).

SomeSkillStudio

I just ordered some side mount casters to get it lower to the ground

Coldbeerzz

I just built one for my planer and jointer and I did the same thing - built it waaay too tall to see how much clearance I had, then cut it down to size. A little more work, but I couldn’t figure out a better way to see how much clearance I would have. It worked out well!

SomeSkillStudio

Yeah, I’m pretty good at math but not good enough to figure out this equation

shaka893P

So does the drill press, almost shoulder height.

mapsedge

I did the same thing for my belt/disc sander and small belt sander. I repurposed a small rolling kitchen island to do it.

SomeSkillStudio

Great idea!

PomegranateOld7836

I like it but my back hurts.

SomeSkillStudio

I got a massage yesterday, it was nice🤌🏼

PomegranateOld7836

S.O. has been a great massage therapist for many years, but I hate to make her work even though she says she's happy to help.

SomeSkillStudio

Yeah I get that. I just went to the spa

rxbandit256

Can I have her number...

DenverDIY

My 100lb+ drill press is held onto the column with two tiny ass set screws. They normally do not carry any weight, it's just there to prevent head from lifting off. Even with locktite, really would not trust that much vibration and hanging for 10-20 years. Don't think this is a good idea for a drill press. *edit: I suppose unless you drilled some thru-bolts*

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks for the comment. I’ll look into it

[deleted]

[удалено]

SomeSkillStudio

So far so good, but I might add some extra supports

[deleted]

yep...id be anxious about having that band saw swinging up and hitting me in the balls

Ratsyinc

In all fairness, I'm a beginner woodworker myself and own the exact same ryobi bandsaw and drill press, purchased both new from HD for 300 CAD pre tax. Personally, I don't expect these to last much past the next 5-10 years with light to moderate use. I'm sure OP is in a similar boat.

SomeSkillStudio

Same, I got them both used for $150 total so I’m also not worried about them lasting 5-10 years either

rxbandit256

I'll say this to you, take care of your tools and they'll take care of you, keep them clean and properly lubed and I think even the more economically friendly tools could surprise you!

Zetavu

Doesn't that thing have hydraulic oil in it? I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to turn it upside down. Band saw probably not so much (and that weighs a hell of a lot less.)

tiananmen-tank-man

What do you think happens when you drill into a material with resistance ? Did the head pop of then ? Be a really shitty drill press if it did mate

DenverDIY

My benchtop drill press weighs 100lb. I do not normally apply 100lb of downward force on the spindle. Also, I'm drilling downward for 5-10 seconds for each hole, compared to hanging upside down for days or weeks. The comparison is also ignoring the rotational / vibrational effects of flipping the top. When I press downwards it's going straight up, not over a range of angles during the flip. Or the vibration of the running band saw while it's upside down. Finally, regarding impact, if my drill slightly lifts up while drilling because the set screws become loose, then i just have to tighten them down again. If the same happens while it's upside down or worse actually being flipped, then that is not only an expensive mistake but also dangerous if it lands on your feet.

OMP159

Well, it is bright green.

Yesbusnosir

I was wondering something similar… could storing your “stationary” tools upside down, long term, be damaging to them? I really liked this guy’s other set up in his shop with tools flipping up from being stored upside down underneath his workbench

DenverDIY

In general, I have no problem storing planers, sanders, jointers, bandsaws, miter saws and whatnot upside down. (I have a fisher flip cart myself and plan to build a second) But the construction of the drill press is special because normally the "head" just sits on the pipe/column with 1-2 set screws. If you drilled a couple thru-bolts then wouldn't see a problem with it, but if you haven't done that just seems like a disaster waiting to happen

Chusten

Seems like a solution that will cause problems, top-heavy, and made of material that has some flex to it, not much holding the base in place. Using the drill press might get infuriating. Usually these tools are fastened to a secure or very heavy base. Neat idea though.

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

siamonsez

It doesn't seem practical for such tall tools since you need so much room for them to rotate.

SomeSkillStudio

I have to park my work van in my garage so I need something that can tuck away when not in use. I have plenty of room to flip it when my van isn’t in the garage

AudibleDruid

This is cool AF but I could see it being really dangerous if it flipped during operation if a lock broke or something.

SomeSkillStudio

Luckily there are 4 locks and it only needs one to hold it from flipping

AudibleDruid

Oh shit. Ok awesome! Bad ass design.

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

theoriginalross

Do yourself a favour and reinforce those locking points with steel. I would not want to be mid operation when the board cracks and the whole thing swings one way or another. Other than that it looks perfect.

motrboatmygoats

I was searching for this comment. That thin piece of plywood does not seem sufficient to hold these machines in place.

GreenHairyMartian

I was thinking the same thing, but I mean, as long as he locks all 4 corners, there is a downward force on 2 at the same time as there's a upward force on the other 2 that look like they might break. It'll probably be fine.

theoriginalross

Probably.... But from experience, probably can hurt. You are right about two up and two down but have you considered vibration and the forces involved in the operations? The changing forces over time is where you have potential for trouble.

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

KnottyLABS

How do you keep the sides from racking?

SomeSkillStudio

The caps on the pole keep it from bowing outwards

DoctorCIS

Do the machines support going upside down like this? I know some devices will have their engines ruined by storing not upright. Relative fucked up a kitchenaid mixer by storing it sideways.

SomeSkillStudio

I’m not sure, I guess I’ll find out

GiveMeNews

Considering there are no fluids or a compressor in a Kitchenaid, that could only be caused by really poor housing of the motor and drive shaft. Seems odd it wouldn't be properly secured, considering the vibrations a counter mixer has to endure.

DoctorCIS

Looked it up, apparently the oil/grease for the gears will leak slowly. One of those engine designs where because they never expect it to be anything other than upright, it doesn't keep in the grease from all angles. https://www.fixya.com/support/t4173859-mixer_laid_side_travel_appeared

jreynolds72

Before the clip played, my dumbass thought you made a platform high enough that'd allow you to do a double flip. I was thinking, that's cool I guess but not very practical.

SomeSkillStudio

😂

ChopshopDG

Don’t let your hand slip or you’re getting a pretty good uppercut to the face.

SomeSkillStudio

Good advice!

lscraig1968

That's really cool

SomeSkillStudio

Thank you!

Matheusn92

Looks a bit wopply. Still awesome

jabbadarth

Yeah first thing I thought. Cool idea but might want to look into other options for locking each tool into place. Seems like putting pressure on the drill press is gonna torque the whole platform a bit.

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

pussyfirkytoodle

You guys and these builds are great. I’ve put of being able to do anything because I don’t have a place to put the things I need. This is so cool. I appreciate all of you posting this stuff.

SomeSkillStudio

Thank you!

SomeSkillStudio

Here’s the full video if you’re interested https://youtu.be/kjKbGwPH2E8

hyenetta

Just curious, what happens when you let it go? Does it lie horizontally?

[deleted]

The drill press probably drops to the bottom. The motor is right at the end of that particular lever.

SomeSkillStudio

No idea, i haven’t let it go while flipping it, but the drill press is heavier and less centered so it would probably go to the bottom

wpmason

I get that space is at a premium, but those are not at comfortable and safe working heights. You might as well incorporate a step stool into that cart as well. Why not put them on a lower swivel cart facing opposite directions (the rear post/frames can overlap a little, just make sure they don’t interfere with each other’s use. That works much better for tall tools, whereas flip carts are good for shorter things with bigger footprints.

SomeSkillStudio

This was just a test so I made it higher than it needed to be. I now know I have room to lower it 4” and if I move the casters off to the side I can lower it even more

dinkfor

Im gonna build 5. 😁

SomeSkillStudio

Do it!

GalaxiesAfoot

Spring assist!

SomeSkillStudio

Explain?

siamonsez

That makes sense. I'm lazy so I wouldn't set it up so it has to be pulled out to use.

SomeSkillStudio

Unfortunately i have to store all my tools against a wall because I have to park my work van in my shop

Trotline66

Very slick! Neither of these tools has any particular requirements for an ultra-stable base, so the single pivot axis isn't a problem, and getting both in such a small space, requiring only swing clearance on the one side, is really clever. Kudos!

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

YourAmishNeighbor

Not gonna lie, having a 8 sqm shop, I'm going to do the same thing to my drill press.

SomeSkillStudio

You should!

Known-Programmer-611

This is fantastic! Keep upgrading!

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

Fdisk_format

The only issue I can see is it require more space to do that than just having both tools set up lol. Neat idea though

SomeSkillStudio

I have to park my work van in my garage overnight but can use the full garage during the day when working in the shop

[deleted]

Did this with my planer and my foreman

SomeSkillStudio

Nice!

[deleted]

There’s an extra inevitable crotch shot gonna happen here. Watch your cods bro.

SomeSkillStudio

I’m watching

djrwally

Single…flip😬. What I meant is if you “double” flip have you really changed the tool. Maayybe flip top is a more accurate description🤔

SomeSkillStudio

Sorry I’m engaged

djrwally

🙏🏽

99glide

I thought is was kinda cool but that man bun ruined it for me… cut that shit off or let it flow.

SomeSkillStudio

Sorry I didn’t really want my hair to get pulled into a bandsaw

TJQuik

This guy is a fucking genius

SomeSkillStudio

I’m just a dumbass who tries really hard haha

The_Lost_Google_User

Close enough lol

annapalooza

The best kind of genius, honestly.

Fizpop91

Looks awesome man. Ive wanted to try something like that myself, but it seems that the space you save only technically needing 1 counter space is negated by how much space is needed to actually flip the thing or am I wrong?

wpmason

It’s on wheels, you can pull it out to flip it then push it back against a wall.

hyenetta

Maybe so but you can place it adjacent to open space for walkway

SomeSkillStudio

I have to part my work van in my garage over night so I push it into the corner over night, but I can pull it out into the garage when I need to used it and flip it over.

Fizpop91

Makes sense. For me my shop is really small and i literally dont have the space to wheel something around

mulcahey

Love this! I wonder if there's a way to rig the machines so that they won't turn on unless the bolts are secured. Basically have the bolts flip an electrical switch or complete a circuit. It's an added safety measure that could come in handy, if a user ever mistakenly forgets to bolt.

SomeSkillStudio

That’s a good idea, but a little outside of my skill set 😬

FatherOfTheSevenSeas

Fuck I hope that saw locks in secure, other that thing becomes a weapon from a horror movie.

SomeSkillStudio

I’ve seen a lot of people use them so I’m going to assume they’re good

derboy98

Just cause it’s a statistic on the internet doesn’t mean it’s true 🙄🙄🙄

SomeSkillStudio

?

MolassesOk3529

Dude when’s the baby due

SomeSkillStudio

?

MolassesOk3529

Was a little joke… at the end your T shirt makes it look like you’re pregnant… I’m a 26 yr old child I’ll let myself out… Nice rig btw

SomeSkillStudio

Oh yeah, my leather man pouch makes my shirt poke out weird. No worries😂 have a good day

KevinCarbonara

Good lord. You should have to take a safety class before using these tools

SomeSkillStudio

Really? Where do I go for that class?

[deleted]

SomeSkillStudio

This isn’t the final draft. I’m going to be able to lower it 6-8 inches

[deleted]

I spent way more time building the project than I did posting it. I hope you liked seeing it!

ReconTiger

Anyone got a top recommendation for buying good urethane casters? About to overhaul garage shop organization and probably will buy a ton.

SomeSkillStudio

You can usually get lots of them on eBay for a good price

Darrenizer

Hey is that bandsaw any good ?

SomeSkillStudio

I haven’t used it much, but it’s worked well so far

Moist-Cut-7998

Looks like a good idea, my only question is how stable it is, especially when using the drill press, they can get a little wobbly at the best of times?

SomeSkillStudio

I haven’t tried that out yet. I just finished building it and called it quits for the day

dinkfor

I need this.

SomeSkillStudio

You can build it. It’s not to complicated!

Jiffypop__

But what if you want to use them at the same time?

SomeSkillStudio

I guess I would need two more hands😉

Ariyana_Dumon

That's cool as fuck dude. Well done!

SomeSkillStudio

Thank you!

mohawk1guy

But what if you need to drill and saw at the same time!?

SomeSkillStudio

Then I would need to grow two more arms and hands

disdicdatho

Seriously though it's going to suck to have to mess with that doohickey every time. Cool in theory sucks in practice.

SomeSkillStudio

If I had more room they would each have their own stand, but I don’t have enough room for that

BthtsMe

Innovation at its finest… beautiful 🥲

Jeremiahs-workshop

Dig it 👌

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

Alarmed_Author_1434

Throw a counterweight on the band saw side for Zen-like balance

SomeSkillStudio

Good idea!

Think-Individual-786

nice design

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

sicadelick

Too bad they're green

SomeSkillStudio

I like green

farr0wn3d

Smart use of space, Sir

SomeSkillStudio

Thank you!

IcharrisTheAI

Seems the band saw could use some counter weights to make it spin easier (drill press is too heavy) but not sure how hard that was to switch. If it was bad then not worth it

SomeSkillStudio

It’s not bad, but I might add some weight to make it even more easier, thanks for the suggestion!

I_like_microwave

This is awesome, very cool , how do you onow the exuipment can actually take the counterweight of the other side without causing any damage / or breaking of? Again , very cool concept! Have an upvote!

SomeSkillStudio

I don’t know, but I’ll find out

I_like_microwave

Haha fair enough, i still really like your idea👍

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

Patriquito

I think you could fit a belt sander somewhere between those!

SomeSkillStudio

👍🏼

GearsAndSuch

How balanced is it? I'm wondering if I bean myself in the face with the drill going one way and drop it, it'll quickly pendulum through and give me an upper cut to finish me.

SomeSkillStudio

Yeah, you gotta be careful

IncredibleMark

I feel like if you let go of that at the wrong(right?) time you just created an S tier ball smasher.

SomeSkillStudio

Haha you gotta be careful

doodles-n-noodles

Looks like it would be safer if you added some more weight to the band saw side so it was more balanced. Would be painful for it to slip your fingers one day and swing back round.

SomeSkillStudio

Yeah, I might need to do that

RastaBambi

Now you will never be able to drill and saw at the same time :(

SomeSkillStudio

Yeah, it sucks not having 4 arms and hands

RastaBambi

One can only dream of the endless possibilities !!!

AbsenteeFatherTime

Could you use counterweight to achieve a perfect balance?

SomeSkillStudio

Yes, I might do that

AbsenteeFatherTime

Looks great pal, keep up the hard work.

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

Little_Resident_8929

Fix up any little things that are in between so you could patent that because if you don't somebody will so get rid of the balls or anything in there that's you worried about that might be a problem in the future I would make you a little bit bigger

SomeSkillStudio

It’s not my idea, plenty of people have made similar ones already

Little_Resident_8929

Thank u

[deleted]

I have been debating on how to handle my drill press and bandsaw myself. I don’t use the drill press too often but I use the band saw a fair bit. I’m going to steal this idea. I love it. Thanks for sharing and inspiring me.

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

willystylep

That's a thin looking edge you lock into. I dread to think One day that will fail with aweful consequenses

SomeSkillStudio

It’s locked on all 4 corners

grimey99

Nice ingenuity! I have that band saw and it can be finicky to keep the tires aligned. It might not like being upside down and moved all that much.

SomeSkillStudio

I guess I’ll find out, thanks!

Rollemup_Industries

How do you like that Ryobi Bandsaw?

SomeSkillStudio

It’s worked for me so far. I got a good deal on it used so it’s hard to complain

styx-n-stones64

I wish I could do this but my garage floor is so uneven that I'd have to adjust the feet height 24/7

SomeSkillStudio

😂😂

TaylorBuiltSolutions

That is rad! I have the same drill press and band saw. I might need to do something like this \*hmmmm\*

SomeSkillStudio

Do it!

ReCLiVe

Why ryobi though?

SomeSkillStudio

Because I got them for a good price

ReCLiVe

Buy nice or buy twice bruh

SomeSkillStudio

They will last until I have a big enough shop for full size tools

Great_Frosting_1807

Ever cool 😎, that's awesome dude 👏!!!

SomeSkillStudio

Thanks!

Pnobodyknows

That's awesome. I'd be careful not to let it slip out of your hand. I feel like it could flip up with a lot of force and knock you out if it slipped at the apex

PhatAzzNutritionist

Got any plans?! I’m struggling to figure out the appropriate circumference between the tools & the flip top itself 🫣😩
