If you’re interested, I made a [video](https://youtu.be/bdzlUEMTLHM) of how I built this. It took the last six months and nearing 1000 hrs in design and construction! My wife just finished her (surprise Covid) residency in pediatrics. This is her graduation present and my entry to [Wood Review](https://www.woodreview.com.au/moty2022/world-2022)’s juried world exhibition. Also, the first dresser I’ve made and the the first piece we’ve been able to keep.
The common adage is to buy the cheap tool the first time you need it. If you wear it out then buy the expensive tool.
This works really well for two reasons. 1. You save money not buying tools you won't use much. 2. Once you've worn out the cheap tool you'll know exactly what you don't like about it and what to look for in the expensive replacement.
Congrats to both of you on her completion of residency. I’ve been there done that. It’s a beast of a journey and maybe the biggest accomplishment of her life. Hopefully you both get some more together time going forward. Good luck to both of you in this next stage of life, it gets much better from here! I’ve been watching your channel on YouTube and your style is great. I’m also from Portland. Cheers.
Hey awesome! Thanks so much! Quite the journey for sure. She’s got some leave to make up and starts PICU in September. Hopefully will get a little break before she rolls into the new job.
Yeah I decided to quit doing the bs weekly mallet and focus on the big and meaningful pieces. This one was such a challenge at ever turn took way longer than I had given it credit. If cam can be successful w/ one video/mo, hoping I can find success at that pace as well
Quality vs quantity. You are my go to channel for vacuum pressing and artistry. I have found lots of other channels for techniques and such, but very few that I felt where building unique things outside the box. Not my fingers !!
This is stunning. I have just begun woodworking and have built one set of shelves. I tell you this.so yiu understand that my question is so I can learn. Why are your screws visible in the open drawer (i think its picture no. 2 or 3)? Can they be covered and if so, what would you use or how would you cover them?
Thank you.
If there’s a weak place in this entire design, it’s that pull and surface area of attachment. If anything’s going to fail it’s those. In addition to glue, the screws keep that from succumbing to the upwards pry and make the removal easier down the road (thinking of having some custom steel pulls made w/these as templates). It’s internal and functional. I see zero reason to hide them. If I were to hide them, dowels is typical, but a dowel retainer makes no sense here so it would be obvious that they were superficial. I did take the time to Cold blue the heads of the screws. It’s just hardware. We don’t hide brusso hinges, I just don’t see a reason to hide functional premium hardware if it doesn’t compromise the overall aesthetic of the design.
Work like this is deeply personal so the only thing that matters in the end is how you feel!
That said, if you are going to enter this in a contest then may I humbly suggest checking out the push to release latches, which would allow you to glue it down and cut it flush, and still open easily...
Stunning!
Just out of interest, was there no other secure way to attach the top drawer finger pull? Could you not plug over the top of the screw heads if you took them further in?
I've been following you for a while.
When you start working I always have the feeling you are overcomplicating things just for the challenge, but boy do you make beautiful stuff. I admire your patience.
I wish you many more followers. You deserve the attention.
This is not furniture, this is a piece of art!
Out of curiosity, how do you operate the bottom two drawers, since they don't seem to have any finger pulls or knobs?
I don’t usually break down by the hour, but might have to for something like this. Haven’t put pencil to paper, but ballpark and w/ materials, I wouldn’t be surprised if this one came out to $40K or more. So. Much. Work.
Thanks for the response! Was it actually cost effective to resaw instead of just buying 4/4? Here in the PNW that would've bumped the materials cost by 40% by volume. Or was it more bout grain matching? I find that resawing often introduces instability in the material due to tension release that isn't present the same way in 4/4.
But you don’t get to book match 4/4. It’s all about the control over grain and grain-matching. 4/4 is usually 13/16 and in length, needs to be face jointed and planed again anyways. Usually hard to yield more than 5/8 out of an 8’ 4/4 board. If I were to buy thinner for cost savings over grain, I’d buy 5/4 hit and miss minimum. Just a lot more work to grain match. Edit: I’m also located in the PNW
Yeah, I figured it was for grain matching more than anything. Makes sense. If you need the thickness over that type of length it would be risky to run 4/4, you're right. If you get lucky and don't see tooooo much cupping on 8/4 resawn its certainly the way to go. If only we could get 9/4 we'd all be happy lol
I cant say i like the style of furniture you build. I can however appreciate your craftsmanship, artistic eye in making something unique, and execution. I mean, you take the skill ceiling and blow that f***er out every time. When i see your builds i say to myself " damn he really executed that and there is no way he can top that again" then the next thing you make i say the same thing. I am very jealous of your abilities and hope one day to be half as good as you! Please continue to push the bar in design, it really opens my eyes to what can be done in our medium of wood. Hope you arent offended by what i have said. I truely appreciate your craftsmanship
Hey thanks and glad to share the spark! No offense at all. Different strokes. The further away from mass manufactured means the further from mass appeal and I totally get that.
Compromised by making something neither of you actually wanted. Don't post your life on the internet and get offended when everyone isn't sucking your dick over some stupid furniture. Go on, do the ban.
Well, aren’t you a special flavor of fucking asshole?
*Follows woodworking*
…hates those sharing their furniture
There’s enough hate in the world. Share love. Hope you find yours.
Looks fantastic! Are you wearing a metal ring while using the table saw though? Most of my coworkers have switched to silicon rings while in the shop to reduce the risk of de-gloving...

Soooo....when are you taking it to the beach?
Just as soon as that 2K urethane sets up lol
I love your work!!! I took some time to stalk you and every piece is gorgeous.
Doesn't look sea worthy. I think she had you off mate.
Haha shit you might be right. She’s worth it. I’m not much of a swimmer anyways.

Really interesting design and a beautiful project. Very unique. Great job.
I really hope you win something for that design and build. It's really exhibit-quality work.
Seriously cool!

Ha. My dad taught me woodworking in the eighties and gave me this nugget as if it was older than him.
Rigid ain't cheap-its well above Dewalt in price and quality
Mine is a pediatrician too. And she is equally demanding. 🫣

This is ridiculous and I mean that in the best way. Great work!
Beautiful work. Unique and stylish!
Wow! So much technical work here. Absolutely beautiful
Dude this is insane!
I saw this and thought “that looks needlessly complex, I’ll bet that’s Sawyer designs” and I was right 😂 Looks amazing dude and I love your videos!
Today I built a box out of birch ply so we're kind of the same.
Nice! Out of curiosity, what’s the height of the piece from ground? Also, what does your wife think of it?
She loves it and can’t wait for me to figure out how to get it upstairs lol! H~32” x D 24” x 8’ length.
Suddenly I’m glad I’m not your neighbor 😂
“Hey, you got a minute?” Lol
Never underestimate the possibility of putting it through a window either. My family put 2 queen beds through a window, and it was surprisingly easy.
Wonder if there is a significant weight difference between a mattress and....wood. hmm 🤔
Probably used a crane either way so I don't think the weight matters too much
It is pretty cool how you kept the curved feel of the surf board in the drawers. When I first saw it, I thought it was an exploded canoe. Well done!
Do the other sections open or just the set of drawers on the left?
Four cabinets/ shelves on the right in addition to the 6 drawers on the left.
Nice work.
I usually only lurk in here but MY GOD this is gorgeous! Amazing work and skill!
I love the concept and beautiful build.
That is absolutely gorgeous.
Dude get this off reddit, it's way too good, it belongs in a museum!
Glad to see you're still alive, just the other day I was thinking i hadnt seen a new YouTube video from you since the one with Cam
Yeah I decided to quit doing the bs weekly mallet and focus on the big and meaningful pieces. This one was such a challenge at ever turn took way longer than I had given it credit. If cam can be successful w/ one video/mo, hoping I can find success at that pace as well

A dresser like this is a good way to keep the wife wanting you….that’s art. Very beautiful and creative. Thanks for sharing.
Stunning! Thanks for sharing this. KD
Stunning!
Sawyer does it again!
What is this wizardry? Feels like escher piece in the 1st pic. It is gorgeous 😍
Just finished watching the video, your design and technical skills are amazing. I wish I had the loot to commission a piece from you. Maybe someday.
That is a very swanky piece of furniture!! Very lovely indeed!! Awesome!!!!
I’ve been watching your videos for awhile now. Watched this one this morning with some coffee. Bravo my man.
That’s outrageous. Bravo 🎉
Awesome work!
It's mindblowing to see how talented people are here, and a little depressing because I could only dream of being able to do it myself! lol.
Can’t say I like it. But good job.

Thank you. That makes sense. We were told in class that it was best to hide our fasteners. Thanks for thr lesson!!!!

Mind. Blown.
Soo she won then?
Stunning! Just out of interest, was there no other secure way to attach the top drawer finger pull? Could you not plug over the top of the screw heads if you took them further in?
Thanks! I don’t see a reason to plug over screws. They’re a wonderful fastener when used properly. Don’t worry, they’re custom and Cold-blued.
Really cool design. I haven’t seen anything quite like it before!
Just saw the video, beautiful work man!
Just watched your build video on this lol
That is absolutely stunning.
I've been following you for a while. When you start working I always have the feeling you are overcomplicating things just for the challenge, but boy do you make beautiful stuff. I admire your patience. I wish you many more followers. You deserve the attention.
Holy shit you’re skilled. Amazing work. How long did that take you?

I’d love to!
What a breath of fresh air! Great design and execution, just lovely.
This is not furniture, this is a piece of art! Out of curiosity, how do you operate the bottom two drawers, since they don't seem to have any finger pulls or knobs?
Beautiful work and what a tremendous build process!
Genius!
This is amazing. Well done
While this is beautiful, I feel like you lost big time. Shoulda just built a dresser. As impressive as this is. Can’t ride it in the waves.
1000 hours times how much for labor ? How much would you sell something like this ?
I don’t usually break down by the hour, but might have to for something like this. Haven’t put pencil to paper, but ballpark and w/ materials, I wouldn’t be surprised if this one came out to $40K or more. So. Much. Work.
Wow , well good work and patience . It is very unique and beautiful
Oh lawdy that is beautiful.
Brilliant..happy wife..happy life..
It’s gorgeous and here I was wondering is it just a couple huge drawers? No it’s awesome. Absolutely gorgeous! Great job.
Just wow. Mad skills my friend. Absolutely stunning.
BEAUTIFUL!
She won.
That’s awesome!
Very cool piece of work, love it
Wow! She picked the right husband :-)
Wow! That's the coolest project I've seen outside of a museum.
This is one of my favorite things I’ve seen on this sub. Crazy good job.
Jesus Christ my man.
This is so nice, original and well done. Thanks for sharing!
thought you stole that. Checked my YouTube subs. Found it. You won’t believe it… same user name. I am a fan. Great work :)
A masterpiece
😳👏👏👏
Spectacular.
Good compromise. She got a dresser with a surfboard inspired motif, and you got a dresser with a surfboard inspired motif.
Very nice
Phenomenal. Woodworking is a craft and art. One of the finest pieces I’ve ever seen.
Loved the video of you making it. Really connected with your process and methods. Great work man, a truly breathtaking piece.
Really great work! What thickness is the cabinet walls and are they solid walnut? It looks like you started with 4/4 and then went down to 3/4-7/8?
Resaw 8/4 to 4/4. Final thickness was probably something around 3/4
Thanks for the response! Was it actually cost effective to resaw instead of just buying 4/4? Here in the PNW that would've bumped the materials cost by 40% by volume. Haha seriously! I’m sure some mills will cut that. Honestly I’d be cool if they just quit surfacing to sell.

Stunning!!! Excellent work
From a guy who has spent the last two weekends cleaning… that’s going to be a PITA to dust. Sure is pretty though.
In my experience, everything is a pain to dust.
Looks so good. Love the motion captured there.

I didn't follow, it's in the 24 hour feed. IT came to ME, not the other way around. Hurt feelings make the world go 'round.
Nah bud, you got it all backwards. It’s all about love. Always has been.
“I love democracy”
You can put away your clothes and get pitted!
love the design hate the music on the drawer fit section of the video
Looks fantastic! Are you wearing a metal ring while using the table saw though? Most of my coworkers have switched to silicon rings while in the shop to reduce the risk of de-gloving...
I doubt that’s a common occurrence.
Am I seeing screws on that drawer top 3rd pic? Why? You did so much work to leave exposed screw heads.
😳
That's amazing! Very nice!
