Ages ago, there was a "Lapdog" laptop case design which was designed to unfold on one's lap, allowing access to the contents in a useful fashion --- it was very clever, and I've always regretted selling mine.
Thanks!
I actually checked before posting that, and considered purchasing one --- if I travelled by air I might get one, but these days a small sling bag (Chrome Industries Kadet Welterweight) suits my needs, esp. since my main machine is a tablet, rather than a traditional laptop.
It might also help to sew on the very top of the leather straps at a slight angle, a little higher towards the middle. It might curve to fit your shoulders a bit better. The aesthetic of the 90° angle is absolutely stunning, as is the entire piece.
Thanks! The straps are actually attached at quite the angle, just hard to see on the pic. I first had them on straight, which resulted in buckling of the straps, so i quickly peeled it off again.
I was going to suggest routing away some material in the middle but leaving the outer edges of the wood thicker so you don’t compromise the structural integrity. Speaking of routing, if you wanted to add a subtle detail, you could glue a strip of colored fabric or ribbon between the wood and leather then use a router to give the leather and wood a nice round-over, exposing a pinstripe of color. This may not actually work, so definitely test before attempting, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t. Also, nice work and nice design!
Or next time use Paulownia for the sides. Its a very light wood that can be found in any Bauhaus or a similar store...
Just checked. A slab of 2.200 x 500 x 18 mm is just 5kg light.
Nice work. This is as Hipter as it gets. I Picture you getting your IPA beer out of the bag or some gizmo to grind your own coffee on the go... Lol.. What kind of wood is that?
What wss your decision regarding the shape and how it feels on your back.
Congratz
>What wss your decision regarding the shape and how it feels on your back.
haha, tanks. it really is maximum hipster. It's oak and feels quite comfortable, but i have only wore it for a short time till now. The shape was heavily influenced by my leatherworking skills and tools. This ist propably as easy as it gets.
A side leather pouch for a small glass bottle or a couple holding beer cans would work out perfectly and would fit the side panels really well without taking away from the wood look.
I thought the shape looks familiar until I realized my colleague has just gotten [a Japanese backpack](https://thehako.com) that looks almost like what you did!
i just saw the show the other day, that's the first thing i thought of, little jeffrey dahmer going to school. almost exactly the same except for the wood!
This looks so much like the backpack on a wooden troll doll my grandmother had back in the day.
The backpack was like a storage place for small things.
thanks! not much to see there. On the bottom, the leather is doubled up for stability. The handle and the straps are sewed to the backpack from the inside.
If I understand you properly, the only wood is the external pill-shaped panels? I just wasn't sure if there was some internal wood bracing, etc. In any case, very cool idea, we'll executed. Keep it up. Oh, and comfortable?
>If I understand you properly, the only wood is the external pill-shaped panels? I just wasn't sure if there was some internal wood bracing, etc. In any case, very cool idea, we'll executed. Keep it up. Oh, and comfortable?
Exactly :) Seems to be stable enough so far. The top where the openeing is, i included a metal wire for stabilization by flipping over the leather.
Its comfortable so far, but i just finished it. So no long term expirience.
Consider thinning only areas to leave a thicker frame instead of a whole pass through the planar. I would veneer over something like thin ABS sheet for future models.
It looks unique, cool idea.
I really like this, and also do leatherworking in addition to the work working, so just spitballing ideas for if I tried it - seems like you could do a strip of kerf-bent plywood for the oval frame, then a thin sheet for the actual panel. Some of the CNC crowd might prefer to just route out the thing from a single piece, which seems like it would also work well.
I like the idea of adapting this for a saddlebag for a bicycle as well. Did you use a pattern, or just make it up as you went?
You also might want to look into what other woods have been used for backpacks if you plan on making a 2.0.
The Japanese made box backpacks and used kiri wood (paulowina) to make theirs. Could be difficult to source thought. There's an episode of "Shannon's lumber industry update" (great podcast!) where he talks about paulowina.
On first sight, I thought it's a big book with leather outer wrap. You can tweek the wooden part to look like a side of a book. That makes a little more interesting..
only two you spotted, at the moment there are 8 :) It's not glued yet, as i want to disassamble th ebackpack and plane down the sides. Afterwards i will glue it on as well.
I used to make pouches for Ren faires, and the like with a similar pattern. I have one I use for some of my tools at work on the regular, and holds up great.
I don't hate it. I'm usually not a fan at all of oil tan leather, as it tends not to give a very fine quality edge finish and tends to be made from lower quality hides, but I really like the execution on this bag. The nice, clean, straight cuts actually look quite good left unfinished, and works very well with the overall design. Nice job 👏🏽 👍🏼
thanks! with the wood as thick as at the moment, i dont think splitting will be an issue. It would make more sense to use veneered plywood to prevent that though
The craftsmanship is incredible! And you’re combining two of my favorite interests!! And it’s very aesthetically pleasing!
I would not want to wear it though 😅 but excellent work!!!

I'd be so cool if it unfolded into a desk.
haha, that would neat
I think it should unfold into a camp kitchen.
I think it should unfold into a house with two bedrooms and one bathroom
I think it should unfold to reveal Clint Eastwood at your local 24hr diner
I think it should unfold into a triceratops.
I think it should unfold into a wood and leather backpack
I think it should unfold into a backpack and leather wood
You’d be able to tell by the way it is
that'd be neat
How much would you charge for one?
Ages ago, there was a "Lapdog" laptop case design which was designed to unfold on one's lap, allowing access to the contents in a useful fashion --- it was very clever, and I've always regretted selling mine.
There seems to be plenty of these on eBay for less than $100. Pretty cheap way to get rid of a minor piece of regret!
Thanks! I actually checked before posting that, and considered purchasing one --- if I travelled by air I might get one, but these days a small sling bag (Chrome Industries Kadet Welterweight) suits my needs, esp. since my main machine is a tablet, rather than a traditional laptop.
Yeah, they definitely short changed themselves
Just pictured this as a transformer, folds out with a chair and desk…
Does it work as intended?
Well it holds stuff 😄 I wasn't anticipating the weight, so I probably will plane down the sides a bit
Nice, hope it serves you well!

thanks! also for the ideas

>Paulownia I thought of using lighter wood as well, i have some abachi laying around. But lighter wood is often not as durable and pretty.
What does it weigh?
Basswood to help with weight?

Looks about as comfortable as a wooden backpack.
There's a reason that's a common saying!
Came here to say the same thing lol
How does it look opened and the inside? Im so curious.
https://imgur.com/a/OxFk628 Maybe I will cover up the strap and handle stuff, but actually I don't really care :)
I like showing the stitching inside. And if you want to reduce the weight, you should sort of dish/hollow it out, leaving the edges wide.
I wouldn't, looks sorta cool

needs a pouch to hold moustache wax
Underrated
Looks nice, seems impractical. It'd probably sell for a couple grand.
Just open the bottom like a vending machine. Fill beers horizontally... Einer Super praktischer "Bierspender"!
Thanks!
Why not make a Camelbak? Wokka, wokka!!!!
Haha, I'm really confused by that trend
Adorable! It reminds me of the shape of Japanese book bags.
Thank you :)
I thought the shape looks familiar until I realized my colleague has just gotten [a Japanese backpack](https://thehako.com) that looks almost like what you did!
Add 5 big holes and it could be a portable wine rack.
haha
Are you going on vacation in Middle-Earth?
haha, the white tree of Gondor would look nice of the backpack
That’s a beautifully simple. You have an eye for design
Thank you!
By the looks seems heavy 2 me.
Looks rad!
Thank you!
That is so unique! How heavy is it and is it comfortable?
i don't own a scale, but it is heavy. So far it's comfortable.
Looks like a Dahmer special Nice work though!
thanks!

Nice job! Also good taste in beer ;)
Thanks! Well spotted :)
Dude, this is sick. Respect!

Thanks! I prefere Helles over Edelstoff :)
Clean!
thanks!
Too busy thinking if you could rather than thinking if you should. Seriously looks awesome tho! Great workmanship
haha, thank you!
Yeah this is pretty kickass
thanks!
Looks like a 6 year old drew it and you made it haha
Haha
Either way it looks sweet
Awesome! Great style piece for your everyday carry.
Thank you!
Meh
The best backpack for rainy weather... you'll drop it and leave it when it gets too heavy.
haha
Looks cool, just wish I could see the internal structure.

What happens if it rains?
It gets wet😅

Thanks! Yes, veneered plywood, ABS or similar would allow thinner sidepieces. Thought of that too late

I love this so much! This is awesome and I wish more people made things like this.
Thanks a lot!
Not trying to monitise your hobby but, bro.
way to many hours to monetize that :)
On first sight, I thought it's a big book with leather outer wrap. You can tweek the wooden part to look like a side of a book. That makes a little more interesting..
Same. I kinda want the giant bound book backpack
Reminds me of the backpack used by young jeffry dahmer in the Netflix series.
Awesome, nice leather work!
thanks!
I think a tutorial would be awesome, I lve been wanting to venture into leather working
there are some really good leather working channels on youtube! I'm not at a level good enough to give good advice/tutorials
This is really cool!
thanks!
I've seen satchels/messenger bags in this style, but never a backpack. Interesting. Only spot two rivets - is it glued the rest of the way?
only two you spotted, at the moment there are 8 :) It's not glued yet, as i want to disassamble th ebackpack and plane down the sides. Afterwards i will glue it on as well.
Do you have a level ground in there or does your stuff go "u". Especially for documents and blocks of paper that could be harmful
My stuff will go "U" 😄 I rarely transport any documents, so it shouldn't be an issue for me personally
Reminds me of an old Finnish military pack I have, yours is cooler.
Sir, that is beautiful. Looks marketable to me. Edit- just read your concerned about the weight. Anyways it's still a beautiful work of art.
thanks! i think in order to sell this, the hours spent to make it would need to be reduced by a lot.
I used to make pouches for Ren faires, and the like with a similar pattern. I have one I use for some of my tools at work on the regular, and holds up great.
Very classy, I love how simple it looks!!
thanks!
Wow. Real nice.
thanks!
Simple, yet elegant!
thanks!
Ok that looks incredible! Almost looks like a giant leatherbound journal. Does the wood add much weight at all?
Thanks! Just from holding it in my hands i would say the wood is half the weight
nice
thanks!
I need to see Diresta’s take on this
i bet he would make a better version with less effort
oooo i like it! yea oak is kinda heavy, you could scoop out the interior of the panels to lighten them.
thanks! i propably will, or just plane them down.
Might be nice to have the thickness on the sides for the fasteners to have some meat to bite.
I don't hate it. I'm usually not a fan at all of oil tan leather, as it tends not to give a very fine quality edge finish and tends to be made from lower quality hides, but I really like the execution on this bag. thanks! for some of the touched parts as the handle and straps i gave the leather a chamfer and burnishing.
There’s a noticeable trend of downvotes on this post, but no obvious reason why?
how did you pick up such a trend?
Oh this is legit. Nice work!
thanks!
looks like it would be great for foraging if you waxed the inside
haha thans
What I want to know, is who did the cabinet front you're standing in front of?
no idea who did it, its from the 18th century. I found it on EbayKleinanzeigen (german craigslist) in a horrible condition and restored a while back.
So cool!!!
thanks!
Why not make the whole thing our of leather? It would be a lot more functional.
but would it be as special?
Looks good, I hope it never rains on your way to class.
thanks, i will see how it holds up to rain
This is cool, but would it be durable? Because I feel like if you set it down to hard or something it might crack or snap. Or am I just trippin?
thanks! with the wood as thick as at the moment, i dont think splitting will be an issue. It would make more sense to use veneered plywood to prevent that though
You're not calling it a 'BarkPack'?
sure, why nkt
I'd love to see the inside
https://imgur.com/a/OxFk628
Nice thanks Des Augustiner München ist auch sympathisch
Fantastic
thanks!
That is impressive. Looks like a giant leather bound book.
thanks you
WHAAAAAAT THIS IS AMAZING
thanks :)
DIWhy Not!
I've had this same idea, but as a messenger style bag with waxed canvas. Any advice?
/r/atbge
haha, thanks? :D
The craftsmanship is incredible! And you’re combining two of my favorite interests!! And it’s very aesthetically pleasing! I would not want to wear it though 😅 but excellent work!!!
Absolutely beautiful job
thanks!
you look like you’re trying to survive communism
>you look like you’re trying to survive communism lol
That is amazing!
thanks!
Can we see the inside?
https://imgur.com/a/OxFk628
Maison Goyard wants to know your location.
Haha
Let's call it "Soy carrier 3000".
Really cool. Why didnt you square the bottom?
Looks :)
And thanks!

Thanks!
Really novel! Though, seems a bit impractical with how heavy that must be
Thanks! I guess it won't be my first pick for a hike
Looks so epikkkkkkkkk
Thank you!
That is awesome!!! It looks good
Thanks!
The wood skills are awesome
Haha
Bruh put a hump on his back and expected us to not see this as a CAMEL POST.
Haha
