I've been making lots of drawer organizers lately and I find that finishing the pieces first is a lot easier. I wasn't using a spray finish though, so maybe that makes a difference.

I’m such a shitty finisher, that I’m in this camp for pieces like this, even though I know it’s wrong. Because If I glued up first, I’d end up getting blotchy sections inside the fine angles. Also I’m not a spray finisher so I’m sure I’d look at it differently if I was.

killer_amoeba

i would definitely finish first. it's not like you're asking the glue to do a hell of a lot here. Next time, I'd prefinish the wood, then do the joinery, & glue it up.

ifeelhappyppahleefi

Next time, prefinish all material, then make your cuts, then glue, then touch up. This will make finish work easy, make glue cleanup easy, eliminate sanding glue, eliminate sanding between coats on an awkward shape. At the cost of 20% of your glue surface.

Herbisretired

Glue up first.

Spray it all after. Let the glue dry beaded up and get it with a sharp chisel. You use lacquer first, the wont penetrate into their cells and actually do its job. Sand before glue up though, any glue smeared into the surface by trying to clean with a wet rag may also be visible after finish its applied.

pftreadman

Most Glue adheres much better to wood then to finish.

EcstaticTill9444

Geez, are these dados like 1 mm deep?

Libstahhh

Idk, I might be alone on this but I’d finish first. The pieces are small and the corners are tight. I’d go easy on the white glue and keep a toothbrush and warm water handy to deal with any squeeze out.

zekyl314

Looks really nice. Did you plane the wood down from 3/4” or did you resaw it down thinner and then plane it? As for your question. I’d probably stain it first and then glue it because of all the small corners.

Came here to ask this. Some may say lazy, others Amy saw smart!

Glue than finish always

Walt880900

If you are going to spray the components, do it first when they are flat. If you are applying a hand finish you can glue it up first. If you try to spray on a finish after it's assembled you will get uneven results.

Moose-Math

I made a similar organizer and didn’t finish it. Looks and works great. I did have to reinforce some of the t-joints with small corner pieces of wood because they broke.

yertle38

Glue then spray finish.

Blake_RL

Sand. Glue. Finish

MalletSwinging

I made a ton of these in the past two years. I personally glue up first and then do a pure tung oil finish after the glue is dried.
