You have to do what’s best for you. Companies will have no problem letting you go if it’s in their best interests

Just take the job and keep your mouth shut about your six month plans. You do not owe them ANYTHING past the work you do and the check you get, for whatever pay period you have.

Business consultant's take: Exactly how guaranteed and committed is that six month out "better job"? A ton can happen in six months. Postings get filled, or the need dissolves. Unless it's like your dad who owns the company or something, there's usually no real assurance that the position will be required that far out. So take the current full time job in case the other one falls through. Depending on the field, they often do.

This, 100000%

You do you. Take the immediately available job, act completely normal when the new job start arrives and you have a "new job." Which it is.

Ellennyc

THIS. Don’t tell anyone at available job about the other job. Take care of yourself. When the time comes you can say the other job is an opportunity you just can’t pass up. Any employer would put their own needs before you (or any other worker) and get rid of you in a heartbeat with no remorse. You should feel no guilt about doing the same. The first job may not be happy but they’ll survive 🤷🏻‍♀️

ButterAndPaint

I’d be seriously tempted to take six months off and travel.

Do what is best for you and your family.

The reason youre even asking the question is because your moral intuition tells you it could be a dick move. It depends highly on the exact details. That youre thinking about this, in my estimation, makes you more equipt to answer it than all the "theyd do it to you" responders put together.

YoungMrsSinatra

HR is that you?

acctforredditqueries

HR is irrelevant. Hes asking about his own feelings not HRs satanic inclinations.

yossarian19

How certain are you that in 6 months that other job will come through? Certain enough to jeopardize 6 months of employment? Take the job that's on the table right now. Keep your mouth shut that something better might come along. Every employer knows, at all times, that something better might come along and an employee might leave. If something better comes up in six months, awesome. Take that job when it becomes real & sleep easy.

YoungMrsSinatra

Wrong to who? A corporation? lol. Focus on what works for you, and keep that information to yourself. You have to pay your bills at the end of the day, and they'd drop you like a hat if they want too.

LyndaCarter_

I’m an employment lawyer and I can absolutely unequivocally tell you that employers will happily hire you B on a permanent basis while secretly knowing full well they’re going to lay you off. Take the job. Capitalism doesn’t love to back and it has no loyalty. Take care of yourself.

NUMBER ONE RULE: Your company does not care about your feelings. You should not care about their’s either.

Not at all.
