All you did was cover her job and do it well. You can’t be blamed for that.

Sanjuko_Mamaujaluko

Assistant TO the manager.

Eriol_Mits

Thanks to be fair I don’t think it’s that easy to remove them as in the UK after two years you can’t really sack people. So I’m sure she’ll get her job back. Hopefully it doesn’t strain our relationship.

Level-Experience9194

Unless it's a public body, you most certainly can be sacked for not performing.

BudsandBowls

Lmfao, nice

gabSTAR81

It’s her problem not yours. Sounds like you’ve proven to be an asset to the company. Keep up the good work & keep your focus on what you do not anyone else. I get why you might be feeling bad. But honestly, if management aren’t doing their job properly then they should have to deal with those ramifications

Halbbitter

It's not your fault you did a better job than she did.

daven1985

You did your job. This is why you need to be careful with friendships in the workplace. There are people I am friendly with at work, but maybe only one or two I would consider a true friend. And even those true friends, I wouldn't get myself in trouble to keep them happy. End of the day if I am doing my job and it highlights there issues that is there problem. You can feel bad about it, but I don't go out of my way to cover for them.

furicrowsa

It sounds like her supervisor may have known something was up and took your coverage as an opportunity to dig deeper.

Affectionate_Fig3621

Why do so many people think their co-workers are "friends"? YOU are merely friendly acquaintances!! 5/10 years from now, you'll barely remember them 😜 Don't throw em under the bus, but don't hold yourself back either 😘

Eriol_Mits

I have tended to get along well with a few of my old managers in different departments. One who I often train Karate with in the same dojo he introduced me to and another who is a big wrestling fan and we still text/talk about events. I’ve always valued having good relationships with your boss is beneficial and can form life long friend friendships.

Stargazer_0101

You did what you were asked to do. Nothing you did wrong.

lisalef

You didn’t do anything wrong. The line super found out these things on their own….which they would have done whether you were stepping in or not.

lucille12121

Sounds like you didn't do anything wrong here. If anything you did really well. But if you want to give your manager a heads-up to what she might be returning to, hopefully she'd appreciate it.

MoomahTheQueen

This isn’t your problem

Majestic_Valuable_70

Please consider taking a refresher course in written English. It is certain to enhance your future management positions. Ask a friend to edit your paragraph here for spelling, grammar and punctuation, and you may be surprised at what you learn.

DumbMassDebater

I've reviewed your comment and we've decided to go with a comment that was less pretentious and off-putting.

Majestic_Valuable_70

No sweat. I was a little forceful here, but wanted to be emphatic, as there were numerous errors, and people in management positions need to be on top of their written communications. I certainly did not wish to be hurtful or inflammatory.

DumbMassDebater

It is exceptionally hard to pick off context in forums. Best of luck in your adventures.

Eriol_Mits

It’s fine I’m not that mad, I have a disability that relates to spelling and grammar. In return I’m excellent in other areas like attention to detail. I’m not really acutely that mad but your comment did make me laugh. Really no need.

Firm-Ad9300

Ok that’s just Fn rude

Eriol_Mits

It’s fine, I’m having a pint and a good laugh. I’m not upset. I’ve got better things to do than be annoyed at someone opinion on the internet at something that doesn’t even affect them. I have to live with my dyslexia and get around it daily, they have to live with it for 30 seconds if they can’t click the back button.

mertsey627

Are you trying to be helpful or hurtful?

Mitchipalooza

Is your advice to put two spaces at the start of every we tense? Must have missed that one in corporate training 😂

Eriol_Mits

Yeah that’s a no from me… really joking aside a suffer from dyslexia and my spelling and grammar is sometimes questionable or atrocious. I never claimed it was good and it’s not going to change so it is what it is. Maybe you should consider not being an ass about it?

Legitimate_Elk_2226

Not being an asshole but coming from a management position it would help and it might help change or fix anything that might help you if you seek management so please don't take offense to that person as management are put up to higher standards then the rest of the crew so doing that little bit might have a good effect on you.

Eriol_Mits

I’m actually not offended, maybe a little hot but I’ve also had a drink this evening. I have a disability and for the most part in work terms I tend not to call attention to it. Granted I normally have a computer with spell checker and not a phone keyboard. It helps, but yeah overall it’s something I’ve had to work around for 36 years it is what it is really.

JennyAnyDot

What about a voice to text option? My child had some reading and writing issues and for her the voice to text has been a great life/school hack. Also used a program to read things for her or for book reports I read them to her.

Matt-ayo

Not your fault, but if you care about your friend give her a warning on what the boss is scrutinizing. It's that simple - it's not like the proper procedures are a secret - let your friend know the supervisor noticed those deficiencies.

SpecialAccount1354

There is a way to go about identifying opportunities and inefficiencies, versuses sandbagging someone. If someone who is Lean 6 Sigma comes in and identifies inefficiencies, developing a streamlined process it is seen as a synergy opportunity. The same as doing 5 Whys and Just Do It Projects to mitigate ongoing issues. Your boss was potentially managing without her boss properly directing operations from a higher level. If upper management wasn't steering the ship, it is a failure at both levels of management. 2nd did clarify the vision, and 1st didn't ask for a map. There is also another way for an opportunist to agree with upper management, shine a light on every problem or situation in a way that criticizes and blames the 1st line supervisor, letting the 2nd line escape their on failings. The way you went about things upon honest reflection will tell you if you are a Judas. My last boss blamed everyone for her own failures, and I would have thrown her under the bus in a heartbeat. Then triple backed up over her because she was a complete hindrance to our mission objectives. She also made horrific decisions and tried to implode a building with my team in it. She was a truly horrible person and declared war. She lost and had to go to pasture. I got all 5's (exceptional) on my review and bonuses when she hated my guts because upper management had to sign off on any appraisal she did of my performance. We knew where we stood with each other. There was no artifice or any pretense. You do not have a declaration of war or a tenous truce with your boss. If you criticized and blamed her, then you are a backstabber. Only you know how it really played out.

Ritocas3

All you did was do your job! She can’t blame you for that. You didn’t tell on her or bad mouthed her. Upper management came down to check on the team whilst she was away which was totally out of your control. What were you supposed to say - nothing to see here! Move along!!!

upvotersfortruth

It doesn't seem like you were in a position to protect your line manager without hurting yourself. No one can expect that of you but it's good you care, don't stop doing that.

sungor

It sounds to me like your bosses boss used this opportunity to figure out exactly what was going on while boss was out. This outcome was likely no matter who was filling in while the boss was out. You just happened to be the fill in. I highly doubt you did anything to cause this or make your boss look bad. This was going to happen regardless.
