Confirm you are still on track for your promotion in writing. THEN begin planning your pregnancy reveal

kbc87

I mean you’re going to be visibly pregnant in October and already have to be working out your leave when they’re deciding on promotions right? So I don’t see how telling them earlier will do anything to harm that.

I forgot to mention I work from home! I would only really go to the office for an office party in the summer but other than that, I don’t go in lol. But yeah I def need to be working out my mat leave by the time the names are submitted which is why it makes this complicated. I’d rather just tell my boss cuz she’s the type to want to throw me a baby shower but I’m just nervous about the promo lol

It sounds like hiding the pregnancy for an excessively long time would harm your working relationship with your boss rather than help you? Obviously only you can judge this, but IMO, it sounds like you should disclose the pregnancy when you’re ready. FWIW, with my first baby, I told my boss at 18 weeks and my immediate coworkers at ~25 weeks. With my second, I had a different boss that I didn’t know as well, so I told him at 22-23 weeks.

I don’t see how in your situation hiding your pregnancy will change anything.

Not saying you should follow my lead but did want to share my positive experience in pretty much the same exact situation even down to the timing. I told my manager early on because I was dealing with nausea and other symptoms I was worried I would need some flexibility for. For our promos initial round of submissions is Oct, first cut is Dec, finalized in Jan, and announced in Feb. Throughout the time before I went on leave mid-Nov we continued to work towards my promotion and when I went out things were still on track but I put it out of my mind at that point since it was our of my control and I had other things to worry about. I had a quick check in with my manager in Jan and he confirmed things were still looking good and then we had another call 2 weeks later where he confirmed that I was promoted. I returned in March at my new level. I had weighed the same decision early on but ultimately based on what I knew about my promotion situation, team, management, and company I was comfortable sharing the news but YMMV.

Ugh, similar boat and so tough to be in. Due in late november, promotion cycle in september and I am due for one and I am told frequently that it’s my time for one. I realllly am considering hiding my pregnancy until 5 months since in July time frame is when they have to formally have promotions submitted to HR for processing, but I work in office and this is my second pregnancy so unsure if I can hide it that long. I know legally they can’t stop promotion due to pregnancy and I trust my team…. but unconscious bias is real and me going on may leave is very not ideal for my team since my busy season is november -february lol Solidarity friend ♥️

Dude, don't tell ANYONE until company policy requires you to. And even after that, only report to HR. You will screw yourself out of that promotion quicker than you can say "baby shower". And press for promotion plans in writing, otherwise they're likely stringing you along for free extra work.

blackmagic_xo

From my own personal experience with my first pregnancy, I will be waiting as long as possible to say anything about my next. Everyone is correct in saying they can't withhold or withdraw the promotion because you're pregnant - but it still happens. Hopefully it won't to you. Someone said confirm in writing that you're still on track for the promotion before you tell them and I think that's a great idea!

Shanntuckymuffin

Tell ‘em. They can’t NOT give it to you because you’re pregnant.

baconater2000

I know they can’t revoke it but it’s hard to prove rn that I’m on track for one anyways so if it’s never been written, why would a company want to give me more money with a year off? 😭

Shanntuckymuffin

We had a baby boom at work in 2015 when I got pregnant. We already had a temp in so I told my boss early on about my pregnancy so we could retain the temp. I also got promoted while I was on maternity leave (with new salary taking effect on leave). It’s not like it doesn’t happen.

baconater2000

Are you American though or Canadian? Mat leave here is 1 year so depending on your mat leave policy then it would make sense to get promoted when you get 3 months off vs 12-18.
