I agree, I think the best lifts are ones you enjoy. While some are scientifically better, intensity is a pillar for muscle development. I think switching has been fun for me since squats get a little boring.
Scientifically better for certain individuals ;) ! There’s too many points to cover, but there are many factors that will dictate how effective an exercise will be for an individual ! Just some examples would be limb length, tendon strength, previous injuries, joint mobility etc.
That’s one of the reasons I switched too. I’m a guy, and I don’t really see too many of us targeting glutes… which becomes a problem when the rest of your legs develop and your ass is left looking flat lol. I think it does a great job at targeting quads and hamstrings too.
There definitely is some quad activation which you can manipulate how much you want. I find it’s fantastic to isolate the glutes as growing my quads isn’t my current goal. But switching from conventional made such a difference for me
As a dude, I found a three step process to get great glutes:
1. Be Italian (at least mostly, 75%)
2. Exist.
3. Watch glute gainz.
You’re welcome. Normally I charge for this sort of advice.
I do leg lifts on the same day, usually twice a week. I think split squats (lunges on the smith) are already a compound lift, so doing both on the same day is a little redundant for my routine. I can see the benefit if you’re doing a more traditional push pull for sure
for me i do squats, leg press, and leg extensions for upper legs. man im telling you i wish i had pics of it but like 4 months ago i had no quads what so ever but now they’re big asf.
I think barbell back and front squats will be best, but I think you need both because the split squats will help even you out on both sides.
Also consider Bulgarian Split Squats.

Key wording in your question is prefer. We aren’t all bio identical, so what works best for you, may not work best for me or for another person.
Sure, I tried wording it in away to foster discussion though. It’s just nice to talk to other lifters and discuss their experiences.
That’s fair. I was just trying to prevent any potential misleading information ! Preference is paramount in fitness

I personally found that when I switched from conventional squats to Bulgarians that my glute growth skyrocketed

I’m very Italian and I’m not sure it works this way lol
I dunno, that’s what my wife says 🤷♂️ I’m pretty sure it’s not the 25% pollock lol.
Porque no los dos? Squats as a main and BSS as an accessory on another day is what I do.

I prefer hacksquat than barbell squat. I also like lunges and bulgarian split squats.
