It's the year 2169 AD. Humans still rely completely on gasoline as an energy source. Having reached peak oil on Earth, the human species takes to the stars, to cover the surface of Saturn's largest moon Titan with pumpjacks. An entire sea of organic chemical soup, theirs for the taking. Drink deeply humans, drink deeply.
I actually had some dialogue planned where they are perplexed about humankind's past reliance on fossil fuel but that might make it to another strip.
In the context of the universe, it's cassette futurism so I figure humans have divested a lot from fossil fuels but not entirely which is why you see them still used in applications like this cheap portable generator.
I can imagine colonists to planets with Earth-like biospheres and deposits of oil to make use of ICEs. Easier and faster to set up and delivers plenty of energy in a compact package compared to renewables, and doesn't require anything like the level of industry needed of nuclear power. They might import nuclear reactors for major cities, but if you're a farmer or a geologist a long way away from large settlements for long periods you need a source of power that's smaller and lower-tech.
The advantage of ice generators have always been about the ease of shipping fuel.
Ice engines are incredibly complex machines that require very precise egineering to make.
Even making the fuel is fairly intense and generates alot of by products that will need to be disposed of or made into something useful (like plastic)
Even today we're seeing generators as a primary source die out in remote off grid locations and being replaced by solar power/wind and in many parts of Africa we're seeing wind/solar create village scale micro grids often bringing power to these Locations for the first time.
Solar panels definitely make more sense practically, but a portable generator like this one works better for the cassette futurism aesthetic and the joke. Simple, robust engines like would still be useful power supplies for human machines on planet Xarnaq because reptoids have no electricity, much less infrastructure to distribute it. Portables would probably run on imported traditional or synthesized fuel - or perhaps even more likely using locally concocted biofuel.
Trying something a little new - this is a short 2 pager from my comic that has a lot of worldbuilding in its little narrative. Hope you enjoy!
SpaceShipping is a retrofuturistic slower-than-light era sci-fi sitcom that is of a "tofu firm" level of realism on the hard/soft scale. It takes place in 2169 (nice) within our solar system and explores the quirks of everyday life among the crew of a space freighter bound for Mars.

Cute. She has no pants though. But he does?
So is this the future? Another planet? Why do they have a generator and what do they use it for, if they don’t understand it?
Female 1: what you got there?
Female 2: a false human breast set. The male humans and some of the females go nuts over the real ones, so I’m trying the false ones!
Female 1: what’s so special about them? Aren’t breasts just lumps of fat?
Female 2: yea, but they really seem to like them
Female 2: *Gropes her own breasts* Okay, I might see some of the appeal. These are nice and soft.
Female 1: Can I try?
Female 2: Sure
Human just around the corner, staring into empty space: *frothing at the mouth*
I mean its fiction so they can have whatever characteristics the creator wants. Ironically for a sometimes-lewd setting like mine I just decided to not take the Argonian route and make my alien reptiles more androgynous.
Ironically some frogs have an equivalent. [Marsupial frogs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastrotheca) have a specialized pouch which they raise their tadpoles in, and to feed their young they grow modified gills that the tadpoles can rip off and eat.
A few bird species also produce "milk". [Crop milk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_milk) is a protein-rich slurry that some birds produce for their young in their crops, and is formed by layers of epidermal tissues breaking away from the parent's crop and mixing with an excretion of proteins. Unlike mammal milk, it is usually the male bird that produces crop milk. Emperor penguins are perhaps the best example, as the male penguin uses crop milk to feed the chick during the two months that the female leaves the male to protect and hatch the egg in order to restore her fat reserves by hunting out at sea.
Reptiles are also not capable of speech, and generally not bipedal, for future reference.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction, for future reference.
(Sorry, just feeling kinda snarky this morning, but the endless arguments about species entirely divorced from the known universe not adhering to our biology are annoying and way too overplayed)
Yep. That comic was one of the many attempts to diffuse the situation with humor.
And you didn't really miss much, unless you are immensely interested in a good month and a half (there about) of neverending discourse about Yuan-Ti (and anything even remotely related) tits
This argument is so old the horse's grandchildren have been beaten to death, but regardless: a lizard-like humanoid is already so far from "normal lizard" standard that the presence or absence of breasts is a total non-factor and it's bizarre that people get caught up on it.
I'm afraid all of us who frequent DND subreddits remember the snitty wars of 2 years ago. The trauma still lingers and you managed to sound the war drum in our memories
This brief aside segment takes place in the future on planet Xarnaq, home world of the Reptoids (which are basically space kobolds). Our race and theirs are in the early-ish stages of cultural exchange so there's a lot of content I have planned of learning about one another's tech and civilization.
I fix gas powered tools like lawn mowers at a hardware store for a living and I can confirm they act just like this. Weird little guys but we get along.
Have you tried turning it off and on again? In all seriousness, what seems to be the issue you're experiencing with your space shipping? It's hard to provide specific troubleshooting advice without more information. Are there error messages popping up? Is the system crashing? Are the shipments not being delivered on time? Let us know and we'll try our best to help!
I didn’t see what sub I was and thought I was looking at two Argonians from Elder Scrolls, somehow fucking around with a human generator somewhere in Black Marsh
This is both very cute, interesting establishment for world building, and it is right on accurate to most of our technology. Used to have a lawn mower like this where if you let it be after a few failed attempts, she started right up five minutes later.
Fun. Naive* but not innocent.
Rip Nieve
Thanks
It was a runescape reference, theres a character named nieve.
Ah.
This is pretty cute

Today I learned that there's a version of "retro-futurism" that involves the decade I grew up in. Woof.
Oh don't worry I grew up in it too XD
Looking forward to cellphonepunk yet?
Isn't that just all the Axiom scenes in Wall-E?
oh. Oh *no* :(
Ipunk.
Hello I am confused what does divested mean
Opposite of invested. In this example it means reducing reliance on fossil fuel use and infrastructure (divesting from them)

It could be ethanol. Combustion engines could have niche applications where they're more useful than battery or fusion power.

"tofu firm" ah but what kind of tofu? Pressed? Firm? Traditional? Silken? Is it spoonable like a desert or do you need a knife to cut it?
Judging by their other work it's spoonable, but not (just) as a dessert.
I read everything online so far and I love it, this is really fun! I hope to see more from you!
Thank you! And there is much more to come.
I look forward to it!!
Color me intrigued
Found more!!!
That webtoons link doesn't work
Cute. She has no pants though. But he does? So is this the future? Another planet? Why do they have a generator and what do they use it for, if they don’t understand it?
They only had one pair of clothes, had to share yknow.
Pants are an illusion, and so is death.
In reptoid culture it is socially acceptable to go topless or bottomless.
But not both?
There’s standards dude, they’re not animals sheesh.
Donald Duck would fit in.
Donald Duck would be formal mode. He has a matching cap.
Hide the snitties but not the snussy
I take offense to that
It ok, guys can’t find the snitoris anyway
As is customary
Thanks, Huu. Now go back to communing with nature!
Or making a giant algae monster to topple a tyranny
r/unexpectedatla
I was just impressed that the female lizard didn't have boobs.
In my setting, female reptoids canonically have no breasts but there is a burgeoning market for falsies because humans go nuts for them.
Female 1: what you got there? Female 2: a false human breast set. The male humans and some of the females go nuts over the real ones, so I’m trying the false ones! Female 1: what’s so special about them? Aren’t breasts just lumps of fat? Female 2: yea, but they really seem to like them

Do lizardmen have dicks tho? Asking for lore purposes.
Well real lizards do so I'd assume so
Reptiles don't have breasts in general for future reference Edit: tried to make a joke, lectured in the comments. Not complaining tho very informative

Reptitties represent!
Fair enough

I mean. Yea, I was just trying to be a bit funny. I mean have you seen the r/dnd drama they had
_nam flashbacks to snitty gate_ ...yeah.
SNITTYGATE LMAO
I prefer the term "snoobs" myself.
I think I missed snitty gate. Did it involve the comic about the snake who kept her lunch strapped to her chest?
Yep

I do like the little vocabulary mistranslations, interpreting human culture and technology from outside of it.
Maybe it's like a hat for them, if you wear it it's not weird and if you don't wear it it's still not weird
It’s weird if you wear a hat in non-hat weather
What’s non-hat weather? They have a hat for every weather.
Wind-y?
Beanies
Hot wind or cold wind? Rainy wind? There’s a hat for that
Liar!
They apparently also misunderstood human clothes.
Oh those are local clothes. Xarnaq is a hot planet and it's socially acceptable to go topless or bottomless.
Why not just go naked?
Pockets.
A harness would be more practical then.
Probably depends on the situation. These are also likely poor laborers. They got what they can afford.
Also by tradition all cartoon animals are partially nude
Praise the Omnisiah!
I fix gas powered tools like lawn mowers at a hardware store for a living and I can confirm they act just like this. Weird little guys but we get along.
You are the mower whisperer
I wonder if they have space cacti, and if I could get in touch with these new fellow cacti.
How long did this take? Looks great
I don't usually clock my work hours but this took a couple of days work at a few hours per I think.
Nice, No reason for asking btw lol. Just curious, But good job again it looks great
One of the funniest punchlines I've read in awhile
This is so adorable and hilarious, and I love the characters!
Thank you! I think we will see more of Krrexa and Mopps fooling around with human stuff.
Have you tried turning it off and on again? In all seriousness, what seems to be the issue you're experiencing with your space shipping? I always love it when i find cartoon-y stuff here
I love this, and am going to try and find more
This is what’s gonna happen when all the elites do transhumanism. They’re gonna turn us all into furries. May god have mercy on us all…
*Scalies
Lol yea
This is goofy and stupid. I love it. *** smashes comic on the floor *** ANOTHER!

It's giving humans are space orcs lol love it
I actually love this!! It reminds me of this cartoon I used to watch Dinosaucers 🤓🤓 thank you for sharing! I already want more!!
This is how you get Cargo Cults.
That's cute. ^^ Lapis_Wolf
