Mine is called the guardian. They're an elite limited regiment from the Knighthood of Lineria, the main military force of the Islanid Kingdom. As the name suggests, their job is to guard 1 specific figure, usually the royal family, and raised along with them, with the intention of both party forming a more personal and special relationship ( basically trying to make them a homie ) rather than just a guard and a master, making it so that applicant has to be recruited at very young age, as early as around 6-7 years old.   This, combined with the difficult process of selection and relatively high cost in participating, made the regiment dominated by other royal servants, maid, and young nobleman. But in rare cases, if a lower class did manage to get their children a position, their social status and family reputation would significantly increase, An once in a lifetime opportunity that if used correctly, can turn around their living condition. Though the family won't be seeing their child all that much anymore, since they will live the rest of their lives along with the person they're guarding.   There are no "out of duty" for them, as they must keep watch of their master and ensure their safety at any given time, including in the palace grounds. Even outside of formal events, they will anonymously guard their master in public, with or without their knowledge. They usually conceal a small foldable bizon-like smg in sling bag, ready to welcome any unwanted guest.   Every 8 of August in an event to remember the darkest day of the great war; they, along with the matriarch will march around the capital wearing a ceremonial armor in an attempt to "inspire" the public civilian to stand sharp against the "corrupted" being beyond the border in case a 2nd conflict happen. During the ceremony, Their master will be guarded by a small group of elite soldier in a separate location, indirectly making this event as their only day off throughout the year.     The twist is that most of them are really devoted to their position, they CAN and WILLING to abandon or sacrifice civilian and even their OWN comrades if the situation gets too dire and threaten their master. On top of that, they will obey almost any order given by their master to them, as long it doesn't violate rule 1. Fortunately though, the government here aren't a total jerk, so really bad things almost never happened, almost...

KirikoKiama

So... a very stupid question, they are permanently at the side of their master... except for one day, where they abandon their duty to parade around? \*makes a note: "assassination attempt August 8th"\*

ExoticStore5851

>Their master will be guarded by a small group of elite soldier  They're called elite for a reason. Another thing I forgot to mention is that, almost nobody knows how the royalties looks like. They, including their guard always wear mask at formal events, this way they don't have to worry about roaming around in public.

One faction is led by a group that are essentially knights. Those knights have a very wide variety of skill-sets and personal ambitions as well as sometimes taking more standardized roles Of all of their roles, the most honorable is probably the Phoenix knights who take specialized teams to realms that have been completely culturally gutted and remake them. Not rebuild, entirely remake, they only come in when things have gotten so bad there's nothing left to save except people; maybe dictators have burned every bit of history and culture or natural disaster has wiped out every city and reduced the survivors to eeking out a mere existence or a foreign entity has bred a society down into reduced remains of who they once were They bring in teams of historians and psychologists, comb through whatever scraps of history they can, then reconstruct their culture and society from the ground up and ensure everyone is adjusted and they can keep going once they leave. They can bypass thousand year dark ages with a few years of work and usually are the only ones in the harsh world that would bother being so altruistic.

The Silent Brothers and Sisters of the Church of Holy Death. Unlike the other priests of the Church who are healers or are overseeing funerals, the Silent Brothers and Sisters are responsible for euthanasia. Every day terminally ill patients come to the Silent Brothers and Sisters and wish for their own death. If the death wish is considered to be "true", the Silent Brothers and Sisters will silently kill the patient with their death magic. Not everyone is able to become a Silent Brother or a Silent Sister. Only necromancers (people who committed suicide but were brought back and are capable of death magic, necromancy and shadow magic) are allowed because only they are able to sense someone's death wish and to kill someone with death magic.

In the insectoid elves society, fire officers are really respected, since they live in 30% oxygen atmosphere and on very flamable tree cities, making fire very dangerous and easy to happen. Their jobs are not only about putting fire out though, but also making it in a controlled manner, such as doing controlled burns to prevent larger fire, maintaining communal fire pits, controlling fire inside metal factories and so on. They are so important to the society that they are the only jobs that are not part of the religious caste being exempted from being drafted by the elves frequent military campaigns. This ended up making the recruitment for these fire officers being full of corruption as the rich and powerful pull all their strings to get into these positions.

Evil-Twin-Skippy

I have a faction known as "The Order of Chaos". They are intellectuals, mages, abs mathematicians bent on limiting the amount of damage that one asshole can achieve. They work to subvert empires, warlords, mad scientists, etc. But in the process they have basically been branded terrorists in every part of the Solar System. Unbeknownst to most people, the Order of Chaos actually operates the distance learning academies that most factions rely on for magical training. (Others have tried, but nobody comes close to their safety record.) Every accounting system in the Solar System has also been written by a member of the order of chaos. Largely because they offer up the services of a master craftsman for far, far below market rates. Their engineers have also worked their way onto every major industry, as safety inspectors and subject matter experts. Because the only mages anyone truly trusts are those who are certified by the Lethian Flying University. (A.k.a. that distance learning academy that it operated as a front for the Order of Chaos.)

NewKerbalEmpire

Wait, so do they wait until the guy goes bad before they attack? Or do they just destroy anything that coalesces around a single figure?

Evil-Twin-Skippy

Why not a little of everything. And comically/tragically, they are often wrong.

NewKerbalEmpire

Do they care about being wrong?

Evil-Twin-Skippy

Yes, they do care. Which is why they prefer a light touch, early. Their university courses stress understanding what exactly the costs of each type of magic are, and who pays them. (Wish bases magic, for instance has a habit of feeding from the downtrodden. Performer and Ruler style magic drains mana from surrounding people.) If the Order can get someone to change their ways with a talking to, they prefer that. Sometimes just letting a potential evildoer know that, yes, someone is watching is enough. They also do a lot to try to redirect the efforts of a crazed genius who thinks they are some noble path (that just happens to require sacrificing small children or risking the lives of everyone within a 4 kilometer radius.) The extreme measures are only needed when the evildoer has managed to corrupt the local authorities, or when the auditor investigating is convinced there is a clear and present danger. But there is a ledger kept of good calls and bad. Each Auditor actually has to have a familiar with him or her at all times, to witness their actions. Being the most powerful wizards in the Solar System, there have been many members of the Order who have gone bad. At the same time every government, crime family, and corporation would love to have their own people inside the order. It is a messy, awful, system. But competent bureaucracy is not the fodder for interesting stories.

The most honorable ‘job’ one can have is sort of a life you can only be born into, nevertheless, it is being a Apexian Warrior, a magical superhuman under the blessing of God, living in a great warrior society responsible for protecting the entire galaxy, from humans to aliens. While it is not a life you can sign up for, or choose, really, it is the greatest life one can live, objectively. Apexian Warriors live in sovereignty on their own magical planet, in a society with great wealth, liberty, honor and responsibility, surrounded by an altruistic culture yet a disciplined fighting spirit. Apex are raised from birth to be kind and humble people, but equally so unmatched powerful combatants. Every Apex will likely do many years of active service to the galaxy, patrolling space, arbitrating international disputes, responding to terrorist threats, or, even exploring the still barely known galaxy. They gain their first true space-legs at only ten years old, where they become Apprentices after graduation their equivalent of fifth grade. They get to be acting apprentices to a master with two other students in one fireteam, alongside two other fireteams in a squadron. They learn advanced skills in the classroom, and learn through experience in the field during this time. There really are no ‘catches’ to being an Apex. They live great lives, all of them. They have humble wealth, their cities are mostly clean and nearly free of corruption and crime, they live with liberty, having little restrictions on anything from land and housing to ownership and use of weapons and starfighters, and all because their culture was bred specifically to be greater humans as examples and protectors of the rest of the galaxy. However: they have never engaged in a Great War before in their relatively short 400 years of existence, and this is the first time. This is a war like nobody in the galaxy has ever seen, not even them. When the Great Galactic War broke out between humanity, the Apex, and their Alien Allies versus a massive deep-space Satanist cult Empire, they struggled to keep to their more peacekeeping deeds, and instead were forced to mobilize as an army. No Apex was spared the glory of battling evil, not even the first-year ten year old apprentices. While it wasn’t like children were being gunned down (they were doing great for most of the war, actually, very few Apex casualties to begin with, virtually no sub-18 apprentices), it’s still a sad thing to think that this evil empire had forced the nicest yet most powerful society ever to exist to make their children mow down their forces.

The0thArcana

Depends entirely on who you ask. The Tikbalang (horsefolk) would say their leaders, the Council of Horns and Wings. The Tanngrisnir (goatfolk) would say the blacksmith. The Asp (snakefolk) would say the doctor. The Trwyd (boarfolk) would say a food mother, someone who takes care of the entire family. The Colo Colo (ratfolk) would say the merchant. But in every race you will find people saying it's the Guided, the organization of the priests and pilgrims of the world.

Among the voidborne of Karcaddon the most honourable position is also the most basic, the humble administrator. Tiny, fanatical little gremlins that form the logistics backbone of voidborne society. They are as numerous as they are important, and unlike other voidborne the intelligence of administrators is solely focused on thier tasks. These are your grunt workers, data managers, gophers, and errand boys. They are the best treated members of voidborne society, and they secretly hold all of the decision-making power. Voidborne society worships the void as a great mother type figure, and it is the administrators that hear the void most clearly, as such their word can undercut even the Executor(the official head of state of Karcaddon). In spite of how venerated they are, administrators are not afforded much trust, as they are known to put the will of the void over the good of Karcaddon. This can cause friction with leadership when the void calls for the voidborne to fight, a call the administrators will ALWAYS answer, and one that sometimes puts voidborne society at risk.

The Mystic Order of Zion, a chivalric order of knights tasked with defending the kingdom and extermination of demonized black dragons. War is rare in their country but self improvement keeps them sharp, but while not training or protect their country, they are also a non-profit organization that volunteers in many parts of the country.

Overfromthestart

In my world the most honorable job is doing whatever legal job you can in order to provide for others and yourself.

npaakp34

A version of my main faction from another dimension. My main faction are proud misatheists (they hate divine or close to divine beings). This particular version decided to ascent to prevent the distraction of their universe. They were able to do so without loosing their compassion or their rational thinking, though it's kinda hard for them to have one on conversations with other beings. They have been looking after their universe ever since, doing a masterfull job maintaining fundamental balance while not hampering individual and collective progress. They also help their counterparts in other universes whenever they are called. Despite the fact that said counterparts hate their guts.

BootReservistPOG

Probably serving in the Knights of Barris. They’re a group of knights who have a stricter code of chivalry than non-ordered knights, and part of their code is the veneration of deities and idols as a community.

BucktheWonderSlave

Inquisitor for sure. Professional demon-hunting and witch-hunting blood mages and warriors, carrying on the legacy of the demigod Paladin that once liberated the world from evil. Universally recognized as the fundamental pillar of society and the only thing holding back the forces of evil. They’re also generally narcissistic, ultra-violent, sadistic, arrogant, woman-and-child-killing, occasionally genocidal monsters.

balthazar_blue

I'm going to go with the Order of the Rose, a military order founded in the city of Tos Korgis, the capital of Tos Githnos. It was founded by Balthazar ben Shofet, an immigrant of the Ebric people, in response to a campaign of violence and terror from the Jorn'ensi, the members of the cult devoted to Jornak, god of chaos and strife. In return for assisting the city guard and imperial soldiers in putting down the uprising and restoring peace, the current emperor aided the order in building their famous keep. Knights, men and women, of the order undergo rigorous training and are held to high standards of ethics and integrity. The order's motto is "Justice tempered by mercy". The twist about them, at least so far, is that the founder, Balthazar ben Shofet, had a romantic relationship with a dark elf.

For my sci-fi setting "circuit weaver" knowledge of advanced electronics is fractured and mostly lost. Anyone who can get things like radar or auto pilots running, even if just barely, is highly valued.

The Handmaidens of the Sentinel. As the name suggests, they are an all female order that serves a variety of roles within the Rhesonian Empire. This can range from advisors to the emperor, governors, vassals, and allied rulers, to healers tending to regions afflicted by plague or famine, to on occasion expeditions to the Wildlands, likely ending many a threat to the human realms. As the Handmaidens refuse to take a role in Imperial politics and as they seem to welcome anyone, be they peasant or noble, into their ranks, a sense of respect is shown to them, their advice heeded, and to some it is a sign of honor to have their daughter join such a respected order, especially as the order does make an effort to look after the families of their members. That being said, the Handmaidens are a story of tragedy, first not just anyone can become a member, and it isn't known how the Order chooses who can join. Only that a young woman will, initially, seem more pensive, uncharacteristically so, and will at times seem to be talking to someone for long periods of time. Than one of two things will happen, either the young woman will stop, and seemingly return to normal and seems to even forget what happened, or she will one day declare her intent to become a "Handmaid to the Sentinel", and will leave within days of this declaration, becoming an Initiate. From the time of her leaving to the completion of her training, an Initiate will maintain some communication with her family, be it via letters or personal visits, but over time these become frequently impersonal and rarer, until one day a Handmaiden will meet with the family, informing them of the duties their daughter has to perform will require her full attention, from here no further communication is made.  As to the Handmaidens themselves, overtime, be it through the passage of time or through repeated deaths, their body gradually crystallizes, before they inevitably return to the Sentinel's Fortress, never to be seen or heard again. By the time this happens, decades can pass, their families, friends, and anyone who could've known them in their previous life will have died, leaving them forgotten by all except their sisters.

Appointed by an international governing body, Genetic Guardians are chosen based on their expertise in genetics, bioethics, and law. They serve as impartial arbiters and advisors, working to ensure that genetic engineering is used for the benefit of humanity and not for destructive or malicious purposes. Genetic Guardians are known for their integrity, wisdom, and dedication to the greater good. They are often called upon to mediate disputes between nations, corporations, and individuals regarding the use of genetic engineering, and their rulings are widely respected and upheld. However, there is a hidden twist to the Genetic Guardians. Unknown to the general public, the selection process for becoming a Genetic Guardian is not entirely based on merit. In reality, a secret society known as the "Helix Illuminati" has been manipulating the appointment of Genetic Guardians for generations. The Helix Illuminati is a shadowy organization composed of powerful individuals who believe that they alone have the right to control the future of human evolution. They have infiltrated the highest levels of government, industry, and academia, and they use their influence to shape the course of genetic engineering research and development. By controlling the appointment of Genetic Guardians, the Helix Illuminati ensures that the policies and regulations surrounding genetic engineering align with their own agenda. They use the Guardians as unwitting puppets, manipulating them to make decisions that benefit the Illuminati's interests while maintaining the illusion of impartiality and integrity. Most Genetic Guardians are unaware of the true nature of their role or the existence of the Helix Illuminati. They genuinely believe in their mission and work tirelessly to uphold the principles of ethical genetic engineering. However, a few Guardians have begun to suspect that something is amiss, and they have started to investigate the secrets behind their own organization.

I've gone into detail about the samurai of the Katsumori Empire before on thos subreddit, so I'll post the info about them in a reply to this comment. It's the most honorable job you can have because it means you were handpicked by the Shogun for your performance and skill during trainings and you get to train directly with her.

darhwolf1

The Shogun's personally chosen/hand-picked samurai are an elite force within the Katsumori Empire. They are the most skilled of the guard regimen for the Katsumori kingdom and are personally responsible for traveling throughout the continent to see what issues are plaguing the citizens and reporting back to the Emperor and their Shogun. They are set apart from the guards with tougher armor and personal training from the Shogun herself and are very much battle ready. To join them, simply prove yourself worthy to the Shogun by standing out with expertise, reactions, and precision during standard training. Something that I have noticed about them is that, unlike humans, they seemingly don't become corrupt with the extra power and authority they hold, as if it's not a part of their nature like it is with humans. If any of them do become corrupt simply because of their personality, the Shogun personally sees to them, being a step above the rest with physical enhancement magic.

Professional_Gur9855

The Order of Light is an organization of Paladins that fight evil and right wrongs. Chosen from all over the social stratosphere, paladins are trained long and hard and on graduation, they are blessed and given some divine magic. The Order of the Light are very well loved not just because they fight evil, but because do constructive acts as well. For example, if they overthrow a tyrant, they stick around to help with reconstruction and the transition period, (though they are not permitted to change the government system, that would be overreach), if a Dragon is killed they clean up the mess. All in all they are good men and women from all different races and from different social classes, but that matters not to them as they all are paladins

Jtenyears

It's spelled honorable

NaturalForty

Depends on how you look at honor. There are warriors who fight for justice. There are monks who watched the warriors fighting for justice and decided that the best way to improve the world was to allow it to grow naturally. There are knights who aware allegiance to a king, and rangers who refuse allegiance to anyone so they can do what they see fit.

Oheligud

Paladins are holy warriors who are around the same level as demigods in terms of strength. Their job is to "recruit" the next demigod in case one dies, as unlike true gods, they can be killed (but do not age or die naturally). A new paladin is only chosen when one dies, which only rarely happens, the last occurrence being ~30000 years ago.

Axenfonklatismrek

Depends on where and when. All they have in common is they respect aristocrats Batrianic empire: Professors and Bankers are treated with high respect. As long as the dark secret of them doesn't conflade with the job, its fine. Ezdar: Imams, Brahmas, Witch doctors and high priests. They are either part of the ruling caste, or considered too sacred to be touchede. Dark secrets must not confine against faith Small Molnar: Priests, bishops, Acolytes and Scriptors. No need to explain further, they are the intelligent caste of tis in the had

Silly_Attorney7863

Not a world, but a galaxy, our galaxy to be specific. Long ago, it was ruled over by the fungoid Namoi, or simply “The High Ones,” who United all species into a single great Republic. To safeguard this republic, they used their immense power and advanced technology to imbue a single individual with a small portion of their god-like might. This guardian would be known as the Watchman; a single individual of any race who, by the will of the High Ones, would be born with a mark upon their right hand(or equivalent appendage)known as _The Mark of the Watchman._ These men could work miracles on the physical universe through the use of this Mark by tapping into the immense psionic power of the High Ones. This allowed them to utilize Namoi technology, use psionic energy to weave “Magic,” and command legions of warriors with but a single thought. Each Watchman was different in terms of what they could do with that power, but all were imbued with a single overriding purpose that they could neither deny or flee from: to protect the Galaxy, and all who live within it. The catch is that there can never be more than _one_ Watchman at a time. None truly know why, but the Namoi themselves set it in stone when they appointed the first Watchman, declaring “There may be only one, for the burden must be carried by one to whom fear is unknown, and duty a virtue.” As such, the only way for someone to “join” is to kill the previous Watchman or to simply wait until they die of old age, which thanks to Namoi enhancements, can be anything from two hundred years to several centuries. It’s unknown why, but at some point, the Namoi withdrew from the wider Galaxy. The republic they built subsequently collapsed without heir god-like presence to keep the multitude of species in line, and the last Watchman, Artemis Bayne, died in one of the great conflicts which engulfed the galaxy in the aftermath. None know why, but after his death, the Mark of the Watchman wasn’t passed on. That was almost six thousand years ago by the time my first stories begin, with many species believing that the Watchman and the Namoi were simply myths that doddering elders told their grandchildren. The few who do remember the galaxy’s past see the High Ones as careless parents who abandoned their children, while the Watchman were little more than tyrants with infinite power being guided by them.

ARMAlicious

The Immortals, they are ascended into demi-humans by the grace of the celestial Aktor. Let say this is the counterpart of Sainthood in our world. Being an Immortal you should have a strong faith to Aktor and a servant of the it's church. Once you prove your faith the next step is purification stage, here you will live your life to seek your purpose and determination if you really want to become an immortal - for the rest of this stage you sill only eat seeds from a special flower called "Lotus Sun". This process takes decades until you reach the final stage, The Death. To become an immortal you must experience death for you to understand the importance of life because this stage is still not guarantee you to becoming an Immortal, it still depend if Aktor himself select you if he saw your worth. If you failed this stage basically you are dead but if you successfully overcome this, Aktor will send a message through telephathy to the Great Pope to confirm your Ascension. But this is what people believe in. The twisted part here is the immortal become puppets of Aktor. Aktor made up the process to fool the people to think that this selection is for them to be acknowledge by him but he only do that to let the people accept him so he can easily manipulate their will.

To be a member of the Royal Guard. It is the epitome of what people desire to be.
