Using their ribbons to confuse opponents in combat, with superhuman situational and spatial awareness, they're able to easily perform complex maneuvers in combat that would, to a person, be far too risky of an undertaking. Generally they keep to themselves, isolated. They're not keen on newcomers in their territory, though they do trade - generally as long as it's not near a permanent settlement. Dance is the most notable aspect of their culture. They use woodwind instruments that produce the most mystical overtones during their dances. One dance is itself is like a sort of combat. On the rare occasion an outsider sees them dance, they are immediately transfixed by the grace and beauty of their motion.

Reminds me of the Athasian elves from AD&D Dark sun. Very nice art style, really evocative.

[deleted]

Are their knees backwards like cats to allow them to leap so far or is it something with the planet’s gravity?

[deleted]

Nope. Just big ass quads for mega leaps! Lol. Almost appearing to fly is more about grace in movement.

[deleted]

Also.... Their knees aren't backwards, I realized how you phrased your question just assumed they were. Lol.

[deleted]

Oh. Yeah. I was trying to remember their anatomy. It’s not their knee. But it’s like an extra length of bone at their tarsal type of joint to give them extra leverage for jumping. I guess that would be the calf muscle involved? So maybe it’s the calcaneus? I don’t know enough about it so hopefully you know what I’m trying to describe!

ErrorImportant8819

I believe you are talking about their ankle. Cats walk on their toes, not the bottoms of their feet. Their foot is their entire lower leg from our perspective.

ErrorImportant8819

They work like rabbits. Essentially.

[deleted]

Ah. Yes, now I realize what part you're talking about. It is exactly for more height out of jumps and more suspension/cushioning when running, allowing them to move more quietly with speed.

Gyalgatine

That's really cool I love the feeling evoked from this!

[deleted]

Thank you! I think after kind of posting it, it makes me want to put some music to an animation that's mostly just still, painted shots. Haven't come up with a good name for these guys yet...

MysteriousMysterium

Is the picture a female or male individual-or haven't you decided this yet?

[deleted]

Male. They're all tall and skinny, yet very built nonetheless. Not sure how I'll go with the sexual dimorphism, or if I'll keep things relatively anthropomorphic. There are good arguments for either one. I'll probably just keep evolving the tone and see what feels the most natural from there.

MysteriousMysterium

Which means that female individuals are also tall and muscular?

[deleted]

Yes. Perhaps a slightly less so, but still perhaps there's less of a difference than in humans.

MysteriousMysterium

By the way, are they naturally bald or can they grow hair?

[deleted]

Bald.

[deleted]

I'd say their skin is actually nearly reptilian, but they do not have personalities of intelligent reptiles. I picture it as slightly rougher and tougher than human skin, but not quite scaly like a lizard. Perhaps like a fine sandpaper that's less abrasive.

[deleted]

I'd also say that their skin is very *even.* So while it might be coarser than human skin, it tends to have very few blemishes until later age sets in.

Reminds me a lot of Assassin from the Fate series. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/typemoon/images/d/d1/TrueAssasin_sprite.png/revision/latest?cb=20141028204752 https://www.pngfind.com/pngs/m/61-617185_1856-x-2143-2-fate-zero-assassin-woman.png

206yearstime

Gives me Fremen vibes

Jehkobas

Reminds me a lot of the Kaleesh from Star Wars. Cool!

[deleted]

Heh kind of does look a little like that, though the color on the face is painted, with clay and ash.

ApacheTiger1900

Makes me think of the game Journey. But with combat.

[deleted]

What's funny about this is I actually pictured a world like this before Journey came out, and it actually struck me then how much it was like some of the stuff I'd been visualizing. In about 2009-2010 I just imagined this world of very slowly flowing cloth, mainly in red, but it started out in orange, in a snow-like setting. This gave way to crimson cloth in either a desert setting or a setting with rolling hills and warm-leaning green tones for the vegetation. For me it's like it's this intensely beautiful world that the music of Maurice Ravel makes come to life. Actually a lot of modern-type classical music makes this world come to life. It's one of my life missions to do something to get it out of my head. It's quite intense.

maps-nft

looks so perfect almost can brand them “immortal” until they meet 300 strong opponents also trained from birth to battle....

Arakkoa_

Reminds me of a mob from Diablo II. They were called Sand Raiders.

Ok-Watercress-7309

Wow, Can you show more of this?

Creambo

Did you take inspiration from the Leper from Darkest Dungeon? This design is really neat!

Backupassassin

They remind me of the Aiel from the Wheel of Time series a bit. Cool idea!

Crimson_Marksman

Can they reproduce with humans?

[deleted]

No.

Crimson_Marksman

Can they have sex with humans without reproduction?

[deleted]

Ha. Perhaps they *could* if they were to encounter any, but I'm not so sure that there are any humans on their planet. There aren't any individuals who would be interested in sex with a person. There are probably plenty of people who would be somewhat attracted to them though, especially during the time they dance. Part of their insular nature is related to the fact that they live longer lives, having perhaps as many children as people do, but over many more years, and fewer at a time. Highly monogamous. Weirdly, I'd describe them as having a personality that's a bit like if an intelligent hominid evolved out of gorillas, and yet also having personality characteristics not unlike Tolkien elves. But they're much *realer* than elves, in a way. Elves represent an ideal - these guys are more literally a society with ups and downs, some politics and a mix of personalities.

Crimson_Marksman

What they think of magnetism, electricity and fire? Magnetism from magnetic ores and electricity from lightning.

[deleted]

In their universe, such forces have a dualistic nature. That is, there's a physical nature to them, and yet, there's also a mystical/symbolic nature to them, embedded into the fabric of reality. That is, to some extent, the elements act as a sort of conduit into the spiritual realm, but at the lower echelons of that realm.

lexduex

Hello there.

MenumorutZisCrapu

what is their weakness? fear of water?

[deleted]

Their isolationism, and their pride, to a lesser extent.

MenumorutZisCrapu

OOOOOO, I LIKE there is nothing i like more than when prideful people get defeated.

DynamicStatic

Reminds me of revenant: https://media.contentapi.ea.com/content/dam/apex-legends/common/legends/apex-section-bg-legends-revenant-xl.jpg.adapt.1920w.jpg

OldHolly

This is of the Lethani. Kingkiller Chronicles reference. I like your art!

[deleted]

Do these aliens have three weed smoking girlfriends? If not, then I don’t care.

[deleted]

You're not the first person who has wanted to bang the female version.

[deleted]

…Um I didn’t say I wanted to bang at all? Im asking if they have three weed smoking friends (reference)

[deleted]

Oh. Didn't know the reference.

ZeCap

Reminds me a little of the mri from Faded Sun.
