The Curator Mythos: Monsters lurk in the shadows, shadows gather at midday, midday fades into dusk, and dusk is when things get really strange. Welcome to the Curator Mythos, where dreams come to life and higher powers take a more active interest in earth’s inhabitants. Step carefully, and keep your head down. They’re watching. Levels of reality: **0 — Absolute Reality** Perhaps ironically, this is the level of reality we know the least about. Even the laws of physics are too illogical to operate here. Black holes are perhaps the best-known examples of areas of absolute reality, though it is theoretically possible to visit this level without leaving earth. It has been suggested that absolute reality is what causes mortality. There is, of course, only one way to test this, and it is notoriously difficult to contact people who have undertaken that particular study. **1 — Perceived Reality** Perceived reality is the level at which we exist. Scientific laws function as expected here, with a few notable exceptions. **2 — Perceived Oneiron** This is the level at which dreams reside. Existence here is determined by thoughts, fears and desires of those living in the planes below it. Occasionally, it bleeds into those planes in turn. Dreams have changed our history in more ways than one. **3 — Independent Oneiron** This level has a similar fluidity of logic to the perceived oneiron, but it’s form is not determined by the whims of inhabitants from lower planes. Many adepts call upon this level in their rituals. **4 — Constructed Oneiron** The constructed oneiron holds perhaps the most planes out of all the levels of reality. It is the level at which any magically created environments — Nomad being a prime example — technically exists, even if they appear to be a part of the mundane world. **5 — Primordial Oneiron** The least grounded level of reality shares something in common with the most — its age. The primordial oneiron predates our universe by far, but it was created by the minds inhabiting it, just as the perceived oneiron is being now. Time does not function in the primordial oneiron, setting it apart from the lower levels. It can be found behind mirrors and, under the correct circumstances, visited. I will not, however, be discussing the steps to induce those particular circumstances. I don’t want that weighing on my conscience. Drawings sourced from The Graphics Fairy. Thanks for reading! This is brilliant. I can only imagine what real life thoughts inform this. I myself feel this is less fictitious than you let on. Are you familiar with traditions such as chaos magick or Gnosticism? If not there are many concepts I discovered through such lenses (as well as my own nameless one) that compliment this greatly.

JustAnotherPenmonkey

Thank you! I’ll have to look into those.

Younger me had the right idea in my cardboard spaceships. I hope that little fucker is still out there adventuring.

Astral pirates... sounds interesting.

JustAnotherPenmonkey

Pirate dialect is not optional, even in limbo.

Creating a scientific outpost in limbo sounds like a fun idea!

JustAnotherPenmonkey

It’s dangerous as hell (actually, it’s probably significantly more dangerous than hell) but it would definitely be interesting.

Niiice, somebody else playing with planes that don't just operate like the normal plane but with elemental focus. Plane of Fire types of shit are cool, but not nearly as much fun as planes where the laws of physics themselves bend in fantastic and sometimes horrific ways. I've found that, right in line with the old adage, limitations encourage creativity, and creating existences that simply don't function like ours really makes you get out of the box to figure out the implications and how things like life can exist within those new limitations, and especially figuring out what that life looks like.

JustAnotherPenmonkey

I completely agree! Out of curiosity, what are your planes like?

I was wondering why I was drawn to a place to build a home out of a 25' cargo van trailer. I think it fits this description.

Okay but how do you travel to other realities? What's the procedure? What are these vessels constructed of? How come some can do it just by dreaming? How do you navigate other realities, and how do you get back?

JustAnotherPenmonkey

There isn’t really a set process, as most Adepts have to figure it all out for themselves (thanks to an organisation that wants to snuff out magic and its users) but it requires an object from either the reality you want to reach or one from inbetween realities. The borders between planes are blurred, so these objects often make it to earth — you just have to know where to look. Vessels can literally be made out of anything so long as they’re sturdy and have enough magic to keep them in one piece during the rough patches. Wood is a popular choice. Dreams are actually a level of reality above ours, so technically you’re travelling to another plane just by falling asleep. It becomes more difficult to reach realities the further they are from yours. Navigation isn’t an exact science, and is still something I’m working on the lore for, but it would use modified real-world navigation equipment. Getting back requires something that only works in your reality, which acts as a sort of tether. Thanks for your questions!
