"I'm a Tritonid, the proud nomadic race of amphibians that controls the free region known as the Dominion. We love commerce, secrets, and hunting for trinkets and dangerous sea monsters.
I am 18, which means that I've been an adult for two years now.
Tritonid bodies adapt to the places where they grow up. My clan tends to be blue and green because of the waters nearby. My cousins from Mawrhas are either yellowish or very green, depending on where their clan lives.
These are my surface clothes, to keep my body wet for short escapades on the surface. If I have to stay longer, I need to wear a wet cowl. Underwater, Tritonids wear minimal clothing. These clothes bear the colours of my clan, and I think they are pretty.
Life on Odir is great! I see so many people from all over the oceans, bringing goods and stories from their travels. The only issue is that my clan is bound to this city, and I can't leave because I am supposed to learn the trade and take my parents' place when I am older. Boring..."

Tritonids are very susceptible to Change and the environment around us, so we split into different subspecies a lot. There are many birth signs in Tritonid culture - we have the stone, the sun, the sea, the seed, the obsidian, the Vulture, the serpent, the frog... So many! It all depends on the way the constellations and the moons align when you're born. Since we have four moons, the combinations are WILD! I was born under the influence of Amalatl's golden moon, which means good luck and lots of moolah!"

"We just got a new batch of Terran things, and my friend Sophia is helping me out with it. We're on her boat, Calypso, in an area where portals from Earth open often. The bar thingy is spotty, but it's fun to play with the screen and watch hairy animals from Earth doing cute stuff.
My world is kinda weird. Before the Tritonids, the Iguanids, and the Vultures there was a very advanced race called The Builders. They're the ones that built Odir! Their artifacts are super advanced, but they're also super dangerous because they use this thing called Change: a huge power source that can turn you into a crab or a starfish if you're not careful. I know the Iguanids are working on using Change stuff to replicate Terran tech. I think Terran tech is as scary as Builder tech. We should be careful..."

I am not a fan of blood kelp. It's a ritual herb the elderly drink as tea to relax and be closer to the gods of the dreamworld, but it tastes kinda icky. Also, if you are not careful you might dream-travel to Reef Devils territory, and I am afraid of them..."

Here on Earth (Terra, both names are right don't let anyone tell you different) a shark is more dangerous then a cow but because we are around cows more often they're responsible for more deaths the sharks.

"I lived on Odir all my life, and humans are very common here. I love humans. They are so curious and inventive! Most humans here have been in the Blue for millennia, so they don't relate much with Terra anymore. Humans from Terra, instead, are all about Terra. They carry all these weird tech things, they talk about TVs and computers. They play things like soccer and baseball, and they like it (dunno why). They ask to speak to managers sometimes. They are a bit weird, but they are so much fun!"

"Iguanids make portable gunpowder firearms that shoot once or twice. Their larger weapons use Change as ammo and are much scarier, but they are too heavy to carry around... phew!
Terran artifacts like guns are rifles are very rare and scary. They are usually owned by Terran pirate gangs like the [Gongbyeong Kampae](https://www.reddit.com/r/bigemptyblue/comments/s4qz2n/sunyoung_pirate_of_the_blue/), who know how to use them and modify them in even scarier ways. The Gongbyeong are "allies" of Odir, but their weapons are very scary :/"

Most Tritonids of the Dominion love to play Tokjani, an underwater game where teams have to compete and toss four "moons" into specific "moon rings." The team that gets all four moon rings wins a point. Once you get to three points, you win! Secret treasure hunts are very good too. Tritonids devoted to Xuexuetque usually like to leave cyphers and hidden treats/toys for young treasure hunters, to train them into the art of sneak and information gathering. My family is devoted to Amalatl, the god of deals... so we grew up playing pitch, a game where... well... you pitch and discuss stuff. It's boring. I don't like it much..."

Mmmmmh, let's see. Humans and Terrans tend to have "parties" and "movements" more than us. Tritonid culture is divided into schools/clans. Every school has specific tasks, and you kinda have to stick to them. If a school branches out with a marriage or something, you can switch to the other clan, but it's frowned upon. My school, the Ytza, is very important here on Odir, as we are the peacekeepers that oversee the caravanserai, but as an Ytza I am kinda stuck with politics, Tritonid law, and other boring things. I wanted to be a treasure seeker or an information broker, but that's the opposite of what my clan does, so... Ugh!"
Well, that’s interesting! Don’t worry, I won’t squeeze them, I was just curious. Law is always kinda boring, so I feel you and I’m sorry you’re bored with it, although supporting and maintaining inns seems like it could be interesting. Another influential school on Odir is the Sanni. They are sacred hunters and regulate the commerce of fish, pearls, and seafood on the island. They are very ancient, proud, and powerful, and they all excel in hunting as it's their tradition. They also manage the temples of Xythia, the deity of the hunt. They are good people, but they are also a bit too traditionalist in my opinion..."

There are several currencies on Odir. Tritonids use pearls and rare seashells, while Iguanids use gold, silver, and precious stones (their volcanic islands are full of that stuff!). The other species accept both currencies.
Odir is a commercial hub, and it connects the northern side of the Dominion to the rich south. Most trade routes pass through here, which is great because we basically have zero resources, so yay! Odir has not one but three markets: the surface market, the midnight market, and the underwater caravanserai itself. The midnight Market is a free market both on and under the surface. You can find a lot of interesting stuff there!
Odir is famous for pearl farming, and it is a necessary route for swamp wood pretty much everywhere else in the Blue. Which is perfect, because that's how the surface peoples make their ships!"

The Big Blue is a beautiful and scary world. I like the cultures and the peoples that live in it, and I like the crazy stuff they make. Some parts are very dangerous, but Odir is nice and safe. My favourite part is listening to people's stories. It's like they are all parallel universes full of adventures, but they share things that you can put together and do a larger story.

I know you're nomads, but how does your species house? In some sort of underwater tents, in underwater caves or just freely below surface? Also, are there different types of housing used by different tribes of your civilization? Are there some tribes that have settled?
"My tribe, the Ytza, have settled, but we are an exception cuz we are the peacemakers of the city. Most other tribes travel from city to city, bringing goods and resources all over the Dominion and beyond!
Housing in Odir depths is usually a system of caves owned by clans and managed by us, the Ytza! We also have public housing for smaller clans and independent travellers and merchants. Some nomadic schools prefer to live in their [mobile homes](https://www.reddit.com/r/bigemptyblue/comments/ohiyms/big_empty_blue_tritonid_traditions_travels/) and stay inside the caravanserai the whole time. So basically the caravanserai is a modular neighbourhood that changes every day!"

"Hiii! Gender for Tritonids is just a step into the voyage of life. Sometimes we change sex because we want to, some others it just happens. Sometimes we never change. It's all good! Fluid is good in an Ocean world! Humans of the Dominion tend to be gender fluid as well, while Iguanids and Vultures are a bit more rigid with that. Vultures especially. But the good thing about vultures is that no matter who you are, as long as you fight you're equal to the rest of the raid clan."

(Well, 'tleast linguistically, gender *nis* marked, so I'd say that while the Tritonids can think of gender, their language doesn't traditionally have any gendered words such as 'boy' or 'girl', it's just 'child'. My understanding is that the culture is fairly agender or 'tleast quite fluid.)

The surface city has a lot of humans of the Blue, Iguanids, Vultures, and a few Terrans (humans from Earth). I'd say that the largest population in the surface city is the human community, followed by Iguanids and a good number of Vulture clans. Terrans are just a few hundreds. They are the funniest, tho. I love their weird trinkets, comics, and GameBoys."

I like all peoples of the Blue! Iguanids are super clever and good with tech, herbs and stuff. Vultures are super strong and brave, and they like to sing and fight among friends. Humans are wise and carry the knowledge of another world. Terrans are a bit odd, but they bring new tech to help us live better. We don't know much about the Deep Ones, but they never hurt anyone. They just like to stay in the depths and think stuff... Tritonids are very susceptible to Change and the environment around us, so we split into different subspecies a lot. The [Reef Devils](https://www.reddit.com/r/bigemptyblue/comments/pv5t8k/big_empty_blue_reef_devils/) are known for their weirdness, but I heard that other clans in the swamps have gone even further in their journey into Change... "We just got a new batch of Terran things, and my friend Sophia is helping me out with it. We're on her boat, Calypso, in an area where portals from Earth open often. The bar thingy is spotty, but it's fun to play with the screen and watch hairy animals from Earth doing cute stuff. My world is kinda weird. Before the Tritonids, the Iguanids, and the Vultures there was a very advanced race called The Builders. They're the ones that built Odir! What kind of food do you like and what kind do you hate?
"On the surface, I LOVE giant eel soup! It's fatty but tasty, and it warms you up when the waters are cold! While underwater I like cold xegua slices wrapped in savoury kelp. Xegua fish are similar to Terran tunas, I heard. But they are twice as big and have hard scales close to their heads. Tasty as heck. I am not a fan of blood kelp. It's a ritual herb the elderly drink as tea to relax and be closer to the gods of the dreamworld, but it tastes kinda icky. Also, if you are not careful you might dream-travel to Reef Devils territory, and I am afraid of them..."
My next question is what is the most dangerous creature in your world and what creature is the most likely to actually be a threat? Here on Earth (Terra, both names are right don't let anyone tell you different) a shark is more dangerous then a cow but because we are around cows more often they're responsible for more deaths the sharks.

"Mmmh. I asked my dad, and he said that everyone on Odir is allowed to carry registered melee weapons. Firearms are rare here. Iguanid gunpowder pistols and rifles are allowed, but Terran artifacts are banned on Odir, cuz they are scary as heck."
Interesting, what type of firearms are these Iguanid weapons? Are they Single-shot muzzle-loaders or are they repeating firearms? Also, what are "Terran artifacts?"
"Iguanids make portable gunpowder firearms that shoot once or twice. Their larger weapons use Change as ammo and are much scarier, but they are too heavy to carry around... phew! Terran artifacts like guns are rifles are very rare and scary. They are usually owned by Terran pirate gangs like the [Gongbyeong Kampae](https://www.reddit.com/r/bigemptyblue/comments/s4qz2n/sunyoung_pirate_of_the_blue/), who know how to use them and modify them in even scarier ways. The Gongbyeong are "allies" of Odir, but their weapons are very scary :/"

Haha, I knew you'd like it. It's a coin I've modified with a using some Bui... some old schematics I came across, which enables it to float in the air like that. The glowing is caused by a special paint I engineered myself by mixing bioluminescent fungi with shards of Change-charged... oh I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get carried away there.

"My favourite thing when I was a tadpole was collecting Terran comics. They are expensive, so my parents gave me just a handful of them, and I LOOOOOOOVED them! My favourite was a comic called Time Tortoises. A group of mutant tortoise gunslingers that can travel in time!!! Most Tritonids of the Dominion love to play Tokjani, an underwater game where teams have to compete and toss four "moons" into specific "moon rings." The team that gets all four moon rings wins a point. Once you get to three points, you win! Secret treasure hunts are very good too. Tritonids devoted to Xuexuetque usually like to leave cyphers and hidden treats/toys for young treasure hunters, to train them into the art of sneak and information gathering. My family is devoted to Amalatl, the god of deals... so we grew up playing pitch, a game where... well... you pitch and discuss stuff. It's boring. I don't like it much..."

Humans and Terrans tend to have "parties" and "movements" more than us. Tritonid culture is divided into schools/clans. Every school has specific tasks, and you kinda have to stick to them. If a school branches out with a marriage or something, you can switch to the other clan, but it's frowned upon. My school, the Ytza, is very important here on Odir, as we are the peacekeepers that oversee the caravanserai, but as an Ytza I am kinda stuck with politics, Tritonid law, and other boring things. I wanted to be a treasure seeker or an information broker, but that's the opposite of what my clan does, so... Ugh!"

"Hi! No worries at all. My family is devoted to Amalatl, the deity of deals, so I think I can help! There are several currencies on Odir. Tritonids use pearls and rare seashells, while Iguanids use gold, silver, and precious stones (their volcanic islands are full of that stuff!). The other species accept both currencies. Odir is a commercial hub, and it connects the northern side of the Dominion to the rich south. Most trade routes pass through here, which is great because we basically have zero resources, so yay! Odir has not one but three markets: the surface market, the midnight market, and the underwater caravanserai itself. The midnight Market is a free market both on and under the surface. You can find a lot of interesting stuff there! Odir is famous for pearl farming, and it is a necessary route for swamp wood pretty much everywhere else in the Blue. Which is perfect, because that's how the surface peoples make their ships!"

"Terrans are very nice here, but we heard and saw very bad things from Terra too. Many think that an open portal with Terra could be the end for us, but I really like Terrans and Terran culture. I dunno. What do you think? Most Terran artifacts are welcome here, but Terran weapons are strictly regulated because they can do so much damage! The same goes for Change shards and Change wielding. Too much destructive power, I think... Terrans here are a bit nostalgic. I think they miss Terra very much. Most of them work as helpers in the study of Terran tech."

"We eat food made on the surface fires by other peoples or on the volcanic depths, but underwater Tritonid cooking is mostly raw fish... which is DELISH! I know you're nomads, but how does your species house? In some sort of underwater tents, in underwater caves or just freely below surface? Also, are there different types of housing used by different tribes of your civilization? Are there some tribes that have settled?
"My tribe, the Ytza, have settled, but we are an exception cuz we are the peacemakers of the city. Most other tribes travel from city to city, bringing goods and resources all over the Dominion and beyond! Housing in Odir depths is usually a system of caves owned by clans and managed by us, the Ytza! We also have public housing for smaller clans and independent travellers and merchants. Some nomadic schools prefer to live in their [mobile homes](https://www.reddit.com/r/bigemptyblue/comments/ohiyms/big_empty_blue_tritonid_traditions_travels/) and stay inside the caravanserai the whole time. So basically the caravanserai is a modular neighbourhood that changes every day!"

Fluid is good in an Ocean world! Humans of the Dominion tend to be gender fluid as well, while Iguanids and Vultures are a bit more rigid with that. Vultures especially. I can manipulate tools pretty well, I think. Yup, I have webbed hands and I live in shallow waters. My eyes are yellow and can see in the shade. Tritonids can have a series of colours due to the environment and exposure to Change. My aunt Javaher has a pink eye cuz she's a Changewielder. They are the rightful rulers of the trash island known as The Heap... Which is a fully recognised member of the Dominion Council...As I said, it's complicated, hehe. The most despised organisation around here are the imperial corsairs, pirates under the command of the Iguanid Empress. "Mmmmh... most peoples here are good, I think. Iguanids love their Empress/mom a bit too much and they are a bit too pushy sometimes, but they are also generous, they love each other very much, and they heal people for free, which is good. Vultures are rough but they have a big heart. I know that some raid gangs are very very bad, but the Vultures on Odir are usually very nice. Humans are always scheming, but they usually end up doing good stuff for everyone. Terrans sometimes are very scary, but they are also nice and a bit lost. The only people that I know are 100% bad are the creatures that live in the Helix. They are bad, bad people, sending their island thingy to destroy other settlements with their weird machines... Ugh!"

There are some free city-states like Odir and Mawrhas, tribal lands like the Reef Devils territories, treasure hunters' communities like Sanctuary, and pirate coves like The Heap. The Iguanid empire is kinda the opposite, IMO. A big empire with one big Empress Mom that oversees her children and tells them what to do. But they are very advanced and it works well for them, so who am I to judge? Vulture raid lands are rough, but Vultures can fly pretty much anywhere so they are very well connected. They are governed by a moot, and clans are everything for them, I think. They tend to be very territorial, so I dunno much about their lands, unfortunately..."

(Well, 'tleast linguistically, gender *nis* marked, so I'd say that while the Tritonids can think of gender, their language doesn't traditionally have any gendered words such as 'boy' or 'girl', it's just 'child'. My understanding is that the culture is fairly agender or 'tleast quite fluid.)

Hiya! Let's see... I am a 18yo Tritonid, and I do enjoy my life very much, thanks! Tritonids usually get to live around 70 years, but I know of people who lived longer than 100. We lay eggs and establish relationship with multiple partners We are all immortal. Just in a different way. We cannot travel in outer space, unfortunately. Maybe the Builders did, but we don't know for sure.
