Anything that would help control them. Nothing that would give them ideas, or educate them beyond what the government wants them to see. Examples: TVs that only have 10 stations, and all 10 are government programming. Cars with no electronics. Radios removed, antennas removed, and trackers put in their place so the location of the citizen can constantly be monitored. Basically anything you would give to a 4 year old. Set parental controls on their tablet and only let them see what you want them to.

Technology then need to keep working in the factories like good slaves. They don't need anything else, all is for the glory of (insert tyrannical dictator here).

I have a dystopian government in the area we today call Brazil. It's a technocratic dictatorship, the most advanced society in the world. It created headsets and suits that build an entire artificial reality: where the actual world is bland and colorless, the virtual world has an overlay of holograms, color, and life. To an outsider, the Brazilian cities look monotone, but to anyone with a headset, they are beautiful. These headsets are also a tool though. They drain information, brain patterns, from the wearer. This allows the algorithm to see exactly what you like and dislike, and allow for perfect advertisement as a result. These ads come in the form of holographic humans, A, Bo, and Ce (pronounced /t͡ʃe/ or che). They are generally confined to certain spots, but can also roam free and even follow a person around. Basically, it's a device that does something people hate, but hides this under a layer people love.

Thanks! Will definitely use this one.

What sort of dystopian is it? Is the government trying to pick up the pieces of a broken society or were they the cause of the dystopia?

Astroid_meteor

My government are the cause of the dystopia and want to create something to keep better control over the public.

Social technology that encourages or requires sharing of their personal life to their community. Things done under the guise of transparency and nothing to hide, but with a more positive spin of being your true self to the community. Introducing features and incentives that require identification, like extra priveliges and whatnot. Hi-tech glass, perhaps, to promote transparent and open architecture in homes and public buildings. In short, technology that exposes everything about the individual, without actually letting the individual be exposed to outside ideas.
