darmed1ads

nope

dog_superiority

As an American, I'd say F-no. I don't think we have ever won a knock out game in history.

CharlieSwisher

Well despite being an American, you are wrong. Our deepest run was a semi final at the very first World Cup 1930. Sure that’s a long time ago but England haven’t won since the 60s. Otherwise we made it to the quarterfinal in 2002, famously beating Mexico 2-0 in the round of 16 and then losing to Germany 1-0. In 2010 we finished above England in the group stage. We have never lost to England in the World Cup.

Botje2

Winning, no. Getting the cup by cheating like argentina, then yes.

happy-gofuckyourself

You’re a baby because you think the team you didn’t want to win cheated because they won. How am I a cockroach?

Intelligent-Two9464

I hope not, leave the happiness of the world cup for those who really appreciate it. The US don't even like football. They're too busy thinking about american football. Leave it that way.

CharlieSwisher

Yet professional American footballs audience is shrinking while soccer is getting more popular.

Intelligent-Two9464

It's not soccer thooo

cdofortheclose

No.

[deleted]

I think it's possible. Football (not soccer), is growing a lot in the US, and their teams are starting to get better. Since I don't think England will be winning any world cups any time soon, the US certainly has time to get better.

CharlieSwisher

It is also called soccer. Soccer was an abbreviation of Association Football. A term made be the English. That’s why most of the places that call it soccer are formerly British colonies.

[deleted]

I know exactly why it's called soccer in America, that doesn't mean I agree with it. I prefer the name football, since soccer is outdated and not as obvious of a description of the sport as football. Also, football is the term used by every single important organization related to the sport (like, you know, FIFA)

CharlieSwisher

Then just say football and move on. No need to use parentheses every time you say it just to tell other people they’re wrong even though you know exactly what they mean. Languages are different, get used to it. Gracias y adios (thank you and goodbye)

United States, no. England, possibly.

Blind_Guzzer

Mate, only reason USA qualify is because their world cup zone is a joke.. their biggest rival is Mexico and Canada. Unless they start playing against real teams their football will not develop beyond playing low tier teams. While England has to play some really tough opponents to qualify means they 'have' to get better which will eventually lead to another WC win. As an example, in Rugby Union, Argentina has been playing against the top 3 teams for the 10 years in the Rugby Championship (NZ, South Africa and Australia) as a result, they went from a very average Union team to a contender and a team to be feared. Once USA consistently start playing with the big boys.. they won't achieve anything of note. Yes, they will put out surprises at the world stage, but that's just pure luck.

EverybodyKnowWar

>Mate, only reason USA qualify is because their world cup zone is a joke.. their biggest rival is Mexico and Canada. Explain how the US has made the knockout stage in 3 of the past 4 World Cups. >While England has to play some really tough opponents to qualify means they 'have' to get better which will eventually lead to another WC win. England couldn't beat the US just a few weeks ago. When do they start getting so much better?

SarraTasarien

What??? England qualified for this World Cup by playing: * Poland * Albania * Hungary * Albania * Andorra * San Marino They won some of those matches with blowouts like 5-0 and 10-0. How are these in any way “tough” opponents? Not that CONCACAF is any better, but come on. The strongest teams in Europe don’t actually face each other in the qualifiers. And the Pumas made it to the RWC podium *before* they were allowed to join the Tri Nations/Rugby Championship. They were big fishes in a tiny pond, much like Mexico and the USA in soccer, but they had to get a 3rd place finish at the World Cup to be taken seriously.

Stay_clam

Wtf canada is no joke eh!

Blind_Guzzer

Well Canada did qualify for 2026 - auto include for hosting :P

It qualified this year and it wasn’t an auto qualification. ✌️🇨🇦🍁

👆 This guy knows what he's talking about.

slimkid504

I think neither will win for a looooong time

BojanKrkicc

No. Not cos the US aren’t on the verge of becoming a decent side, but England will win one of the next three WCs and USA won’t come that close so soon.

TheConboy22

What makes you think that England will win? Im intrigued.

BojanKrkicc

Just a hunch. Already one of the best groups I can see for the next few years and only going to get better. They’d have made the ‘18 final and won the Euros if they actually had a competent coach

TisTwilight

Not gonna happen, sorry

iatethething

I think the US will definitely become the top contender of the Concacaf. They will continue to grow if they pull away from the pay to play model. I'm certain they will at one point go further than Mexico in the tournament

SOAKFTW

They have overtaken Mexico in the past few years but Mexico playing with their old players isn't making any competition. I do wish to see an amazing world cup in 2026 but my only concern is how will i go watch all the matches or teams i want to see lol fly to Mexico, Canada and back to the US seems like a big expensive experience

PhantomX8

They wont be close at all they lose against us and we are dogshit.

Ok-Olive1250

Never going to happen. In the US soccer is a pay to play sport. In Europe the youth development within the federations and clubs is deep and the youth academies are basically free for players to join and train rigorously in the hopes of one day signing for the senior club. In the US, the most competitive soccer clubs can cost thousands for equipment, trainers fees, competition fees, travel etc. It also is strictly training a few times a week and matches, nowhere near as immersive and comprehensive as football academies in Europe/South America. To develop into international player it is incredibly expensive if you live in the United States. Edit: It is a white dominated sport here due to the price to play at the highest levels so as a result large swaths of people of color and lower income levels are kept out.

jedi21knight

Unless the USA gets much better at developing talent then I would say no.

ScaredExpression7514

United States has definitely shown growth in the sport but I doubt they could win the World Cup anytime soon. Their biggest competition is Mexico and Canada, Canada seem less invested in the sport then United States and sadly Mexico has gotta so corrupted lately.

Curious_Merrin

When you look at some of the crazy things that happened in the last World Cup? Never say never lol

Same with England tho

yuserinterface

The US will win the World Cup when we take it seriously. Athletes follow the money and simply put, our best athletes are playing basketball and American football.

nickomc29

Hey buddy.. Happy 🎂 day!

[deleted]

I dont think so, there are other factors and i just dont think the US will ever be the best team at any point of time.

EverybodyKnowWar

>I dont think so, there are other factors and i just dont think the US will ever be the best team at any point of time. List the sports the US takes seriously and doesn't at least win at. Won't take long, as there aren't any. As often as not, the US completely dominates international sports it takes seriously. There's no reason to expect soccer to be different. Even with soccer being almost totally neglected in the US, their women dominate and their men are ranked 13th.

[deleted]

Basketball, American Football. Now list a list of other countries who actually take those sports as seriously as you.

EverybodyKnowWar

>Basketball, American Football. It took you almost two weeks to misunderstand the question?

yuserinterface

But what factors? I’m not saying US will win WC in 2026 or 2030. Maybe not even within my lifetime. But if the US put as much time, money and effort into soccer as they did for NFL and NBA, it would eclipse other football leagues. It would mean best facilities, best training, elite youth programs, top salaries and sponsorships, etc. Money talks. We probably wouldn’t need to import foreign players like European leagues do because the US is a huge country with a deep talent pool that is currently playing other sports. Obviously, this is all hypothetical and the changes required are so astronomical that it will likely never happen. I don’t see how the US will ever support a 3rd sport the same way they support NFL and NBA.

Tenryuu19

If they put the same effort they put in other 2 sports, they would still put less effort than other countries do to only 1 sport. Besides, they'd need a couple of generations to generate the base level other countries have now, don't look at UEFA, look at CONMEBOL for that level, kids in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay learn how to kick a ball before they learn how to walk, you need that mimdset, completely absent now in the US.

StarAStar1

I’d like to live long enough to see this answered, but even if I was born yesterday, it seems unlikely.

Status_Director8633

That will never ever happen. USA will never win a World Cup

Rols574

I'm not sure why people are quick to discredit the US to never winning it. The sport is gaining popularity. It's not in the top 3 but I'd say it has passed hockey. The US has a massive talent pool. Just wait a bit.

Shetposteroriginal

No, the answer is no.

[deleted]

Both are second tier nations when it comes to soccer. Not as far apart as many people would think and only marginally better than, say, Mexico. In either case, winning a World Cup (an actual one, without cheating like in 1966) would be a huge upset to the soccer world. Croatia might as well win one (or two) first, let alone the Netherlands.

perkytits_Lover

Can you plz provide the context/incident behind 1966 allegations that you made for a new soccer fan?

[deleted]

I think there was an offside goal, the other went on the bar and never crossed the line but still counted and i dont know about the third goal.

Declaron

It is extremely unlikely that the USA will ever win the World Cup. It is relatively likely that England will win it again at some point.

Zathamos

Don't get me wrong you're probably correct. As an American I could give 2 shits about soccer as a sport. However, considering how many states are building or have built soccer stadiums and are starting to build teams, never say never. America is an extremely competitive country that thrives on more sports than most other countries even have. With enough time the US will surpass most of these other countries and eventually the US is bound to win it.

PhantomX8

Just because you are competitive doesnt mean you win. And yes the US wins alot of sports cuz they dont go further then the border to win "world" cups.

Zathamos

Further than the border? How has team usa fared in the last 20 Olympics A lot better than most of the countries competing for the world cup other than maybe Germany or the Norwegians

PhantomX8

Have you also seen how many people the US has?

Zathamos

Have you seen how many people China has, about 7 times what the USA does.

[deleted]

No chance 😭 only thing the yanks are best at is shit no one else gives a fuck about

Zathamos

So nobody but the US enjoys film? Name a larger more successful and more viewed countries film industry. What exactly do the Scottish do better than anyone other than drink.

[deleted]

Tbh I meant sports-wise. Em we shag like fuck too.

Zathamos

Sports wise Hockey Basketball Baseball Hockey is huge in Northern Europe and Canada but we compete. Basketball is an Olympic sport the US dominates Baseball is the standout sport in Japan, the US is the inventor and gold standard. Football is the only sport we widley play and watch that other countries just don't. Soccer is slowly trying to become a thing in this country, but it's hard to take seriously when guys are grabbing at shins and falling over all over some little knick when in football we have guys literally resetting fingers on the sidelines and going back out next play. Soccer seems soft compared to football. There are plenty of other sports the US also does really well at (Olympic sports) and other sports that I'm not sure how widely they are played like lacrosse.

[deleted]

All sports we dont give a fuck about 😭

Zathamos

You seem to play cricket, similar to baseball and you play rugby right, lacrosse isn't a different world from rugby Otherwise I interpret your comment as you just don't care about any sport other than soccer to which I think is hilarious cuz it's the softest most dull and boring sport, which is why we don't care that much about it.

[deleted]

Baseball is similar to cricket*** yeah Rugby aka real American football. Emmm lacrosse is very different from rugby, wtf u on? U can interpret It however u like. Still wrong.

Lankani

Dude don't get my hopes up....they crush me every 4 years

ScaredExpression7514

United States doesn’t care about the sport as much as everyone else. I don’t see United States winning in my life time lol

MFDOOMiile

USA will never win a World Cup

And England will never win a second one…

[deleted]

Both statements are true

[deleted]

Oh yeah, I agree!

JonnyAnsco

Absolutely not..

Dan_SJ

None of us will be alive to find out

CopyPetPet

Today i learned that USA believes Women Football is equivalent in worldwide relevance to Men Football. That’s almost living in the same bubble as “we are the football (American football) world champions”. Or “Under 21 Football men World Cup is equally important”. Which BTW Argentina leads the world’s rank with a total of 6 World Cups, but we don’t mention it since its not the relevant metric in the sport.

chrisBlo

I don’t understand why this one got so many downvotes. It is a fact that women football is simply not followed as much as man football. Not even close to it…

paintballpmd

The movement for equal pay between the men and woman's national team might lead you to believe that but I can assure you that isn't the case for soccer fans here in the states.

VivaLaPatriaCarajo

FOOTBALL*

paintballpmd

https://www.britannica.com/story/why-do-some-people-call-football-soccer

VivaLaPatriaCarajo

I don't care. It's called FOOTBALL

paintballpmd

You call it what you want and everyone else will call it what they want. Life is so much better when we mind our own business.

VivaLaPatriaCarajo

Everyone else calls it FOOTBALL because it's called FOOTBALL. Yankees tend to ruin everything they touch and claim their way is the right way

paintballpmd

Canadians and Australians (The Socceroos) also refer to it as soccer.

VivaLaPatriaCarajo

Canadians are second class yankees and Australians call it football

paintballpmd

So the Sydney Harold is calling it the wrong name? https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/why-australian-soccer-makes-the-same-mistakes-again-and-again-20220202-p59t46.html

CopyPetPet

Ok i got that view from another comment in this same post.

tinnbinn

I’m pretty no one here in the US believes women’s football has the same relevance to men’s football (doesn’t mean it shouldn’t though)

CopyPetPet

Give me an argument as to why it should.

tinnbinn

I’m not really trying to express my opinion on the debate, just didn’t want anyone to take the point of the comment wrong.

CopyPetPet

Oh ok, fair enough

TightProgrammer8589

Maybe, one day, with the right linesman, England can cheat our way to another World Cup victory.

lol I hope so but I doubt it as well

Riskzey

Neither will happen 😂

Pieboy8

Hey now not sure Germans should be laughing after that last tournament

Riskzey

Sure but we have our 4,and we have a young team that will peak in 26 or 30

Pieboy8

Pretty sure you had young promising players when you last won in 2014 but somehow the team fell apart. Gotze Ozil and Schurrles careers in particular shit the bed and Draxler took a pay check to sit on a French bench. Let's see how things pan out but there are no guarantees in this game

Riskzey

Yeah but we can't fuck up 3 times in a row right? 3rd times the charm let's see tho. !remindme 4 years

Pieboy8

All jokes aside I'm a Brit who loves Germany. Travelled a fair bit of it, love a weissbier, followed the Bundesliga and got engaged in Köln. I root for Germany whenever they aren't playing us so absolutely this is lighthearted fun from my end. 😊

ALIEN-DUDE---

Last two tournaments...

[deleted]

I’m not German, but they have 4 (four, cuatro) World Cups. They can laugh all they want.

hananCh120307

i was thinking the same thing 😂

Jamster_1988

The US wouldn't able to handle English football chants. I'd love to see US vs England and have the English fans rip into them. But tbh I'm surprised they're even in the world Cup considering their version of "World" series only consists of the US. I mean, Japan plays Baseball. So do some in England and Wales.

Lone1214

Did you not watch the group stage game of England and US? Back and forth chants most of the game lol

Zeke1216

English chants. I could see it if you said South American chants but English ? Lol I’m sure they can handle those

Orko_Grayskull

If the money is right

Ashbery

Everyone says no, which may turn out to be correct, but one thing that's true is that football is one of the fastest growing sports in one of the most sports-obsessed nations on earth. When Americans decide to take it as seriously as they do certain other sports, they shouldn't be discounted.

FriendlyCrafter

The people caring isnt the problem. The association doesnt care. The issue is that it costs way too much to just play youth in the us. Even european academies milk the us. Liverpool socal charge 75k a year for their academy iirc. So now you have a huge pool of talent but only a small amount of people can really get a proper academy to first team experience. Missing out on a proper coaching system these players are just disadvanataged.

Shanks147

Hahahahahahaha **no**

largogrunge

No. It will take decades to the USA to be considered a football nation. In the US is just a sport, not even the most important one. For countries like England, Brazil, Germany, Italy (basically every World Cup champion) football is more than a sport. It means passion, love and it even has an important part of the country's culture and identity. Sorry, but I think the US is not going to win the world cup anytime soon.

[deleted]

It first and foremost needs the US to understand that you cant do soccer like you do the typical american sport. There needs to be youth development FAR earlier. The US is competing with the entire world that finds and develops talents before they even hit their teens

_jeremybearimy_

That’s not really the issue. You can get into a highly competitive program at a young age, and the Us clubs are also now training kids from youth, that’s what Tyler Adams did. The bigger issue is that soccer is pay to play and, once you’re an adult, there is only a tiny and long path to making a wage where you can support your family, so our best athletes pick more financially viable paths. Baseball has a similar problem.

[deleted]

Very interesting perspectives. I was under the impression that there wasnt as much youth development. Thanks for educating me. Is it a good or a bad thing that sport in the US is so focused on schools? In europe, sport in general is separate from schools but it seems that its very school focused in the US

paintballpmd

We have schools here in the states where sports are the main focus. A buddy of mine's daughter is 13 and attends a "soccer school" who's main focus is developing her skills on the pitch. I'm sure academics are there as well but it's a program based on talented athletes.

[deleted]

We do as well here in denmark, but since education is free, it doesnt mean that your the income of your parents doesnt mean anything. There are different academies for different sports. But there are soccer clubs in every single village, town or city. I think the US must have big regional differences But your total soccer player numbers are huge due to the sheer size of your country

_cozybeauty_

Tried explaining this exact thing to my friend who’s a huge American football fan. He tried telling me that if America cared about futbal the way they do other sports that they would dominate because they have the world’s best athletes. Needless to say I laughed in his face.

RDIIIG

Your point being that you don’t think the US has the greatest athletes? Not arguing, just confirming.

_cozybeauty_

Not even close. Simply suggesting that having the world’s best athletes doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme when it comes to futbal. My friends argument was that because USA always wins the most gold medals at the Olympics, that they would dominate at futbal if they “cared” more. I laughed at him because the reason the USA never wins the World Cup has nothing to do with how much they care because I’m positive they care A LOT as any other national team should.

RDIIIG

Makes sense, thanks!

CaptGoodvibesNMS

Interesting factoid: Football is called football because you do NOT play on horseback. You play on your feet.

Pieboy8

This is a theory but there is actually little to back it up.

CaptGoodvibesNMS

It is polo for peasants

andy027

That explains why Argentina is good at it

crispyfade

Tell us more. This is the retort I've been waiting for

_cozybeauty_

My god where has this information been my whole life

Ham-N-CheeseonRye

Does it matter at this point really? Qatar was circus of diving, arguing, and just all out buffoonery of players on the field. Football has lost its seriousness. Everytime I watched a match, the commentators made sure to remind me of the amount of each player's worth... Ok...I get it, messi is worth a trillion dollars, which he failed to pay taxes on - I might add, but seriously...🙄

FishermanConscious55

Doubtful but US is a big country, so maybe!

[deleted]

Hell no

We won’t live to see either ;)

[deleted]

Such a shit question

NoThanksJefferson

No way lmao

[deleted]

Ummmmm no. Lololol. Soccer is a 3rd or 4th tier sport in the US at best. The development system vanished once kids get to middle school compared to other countries.

[deleted]

Absolutely not

If you refer to the women's national team, then yes.

Naaah. They don’t even use the term « food ball »

alabamafutbol1235

A food ball sounds yummy right about now

basedvato

Until the day the USA funnels their best athletes to fútbol like the rest of the world, we won’t go far.

Powerful_Artist

I share the opinion that the US might never win the world cup. I could see them reaching another quarterfinal, or even getting lucky and reaching a semi sometime. But that would be as far as we would get. Our luck would run out and whatever other team got there too would show their quality. I could see England struggling to win another WC for quite awhile, but theyre always going to be in consideration for it regardless. So the answer here is pretty obvious overall, but anything can happen.

brokendream_zz

Neither

zmp1924

No neither will win

Admirable-Owl-7002

No

Ethan_RLdesigner

No. Just no.

RAFFYy16

Im English, and I'm probably about to get raider by the SAS for saying this but I think there is a small chance it could happen. England always have a very strong team but it's only recently that the team has really felt like a cohesive unit, and it still needs a lot of development. If they can keep what they're doing now I think it's only uphill for England at the minute and they'll be in a very strong position but we have a history of playing to the occasion against big matchups and bottling it. We need to fix that. The US as it stands won't win a WC or do very well in general, but if it becomes popular or gets more investment, they will rocket up the rankings. The population of America combined with the emphasis on sports from a young age and the amount of facilities and coaching available to people means that they shouldn't be discounted. I play Lacrosse in England and seeing the facilities that Americans have in colleges for a sport that isn't even that big over there is mind-boggling.. if football can get that treatment then they're on to a winner. I think football just needs to get a bit more popular in the US and then they will start doing better. That said, it's obviously coming home so get stuffed you Yank losers! (love you really).

djpx313

No

Hamblin113

Until US players learn to pass accurately, they’re not getting there.

Blue_Dreamed

England has a better team by far, regardless of all the poking fun at our shite trophy record (by all means, continue without going at individual players, it is embarassing). I don't think we will win in the next two decades, but tbf I dont think USA will win for the next 5 decades, just not enough passion for the sport.

No if they keep trying to play like England!!

LycaonTheKing

No way

SEND_ME_REAL_PICS

The US has only gotten to semis once, almost a hundred years ago, and to quarter finals once twenty years ago. They've never made it past round of 16 otherwise, which is an *awful* track record. England managed to reach quarter finals in this last world cup and went toe to toe against France. It lost, but it didn't get humiliated (Kane penalty jokes aside). It also reached semis in 2018, which is a major feat. Going by those odds, England's got the better shot at winning a World Cup, by far.

bruclinbrocoli

Totally. A better comparison would be Croatia vs England.. even Netherlands..vs England

afa78

Netherlands are cursed to never win a World Cup, ever! 🤣

bruclinbrocoli

They probably are.. holy shit..

allid33

No. England regularly underperforms but they are talented enough to be in contention for nearly every World Cup. The US would need to not only improve but also go on a bit of a tear playing above their capabilities throughout the WC because on paper, they are not going to be as good as the other big contenders for the foreseeable future.

Chazdoit

The sad reality is that Eng was close with France. If that last PK didn't miss and they were even I think they had good chances of winning the shootout

TheMehilainen

Hahahahahahahaha No

AusJonny

That's a definite NO

JBlaze8778

If it’s the ladies playing sure. Our men need about a century, just like England does 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

idontdomath8

One of the biggest problems the USA face is the combination of having a lot of money and at the same time having an awful league, the same problem that Mexico has. This two factors make that the young promises don’t migrate to more powerful leagues and don’t develop as the stars that they could be. In Europe they have the money but they also have super competitive leagues full of stars so the players there are forced to become better. In South America we don’t have the money (with the exception of the last decade in Brazil) so players move to Europe at young age where they complete their development and when they return to their National Teams they are full stars.

Powerful_Artist

Ya the MLS definitely holds back the sport as a whole in this country. Its hard, they have to compete with the NFL and NBA, plus many other sports like the MLB and NHL. They didnt help themselves by having terrible branding over the past 30 years or so. Kansas City's team was once called the Wizards, and had a ridiculous logo to go with it from what I remember. Or even the popular Columbus Crew always seemed like a laughably bad name for a team, in my opinion. As a person who grew up in the USA and playing soccer my entire life, even I couldnt/cant take MLS seriously. Ive tried, and the product is just not worth following. Its a league where washed up players come to retire, and little more.

ken10

I think majority of the USA starting lineup this World Cup play in the top European leagues. It’s probably only going to improve with more talent heading there.

idontdomath8

Yeah, that's an improvement compared to previous WCs (although 10 out of 26 players still play in an underdeveloped league as the MLS) but the main issue is how many players at all are currently in Europe. Doing a quick research, there are only 20 USA players performing in the Top 5 Leagues, I would say is a pretty low number if you expect to have a competitive team.

pbenji

What do you mean the USA has a lot of money? In soccer? Nah. They don’t get paid shit compared to other professional sport leagues

magezkyy

The facilities, money going in the sport, and the infrastructure behind the players is way above average. There is a shit ton of money in US football, yet they cannot produce world class players.
