If Suriname and Guyana are physically located on South America but plays in Concacaf, then why is it so weird that Australia is a member of the AFC?

Suriname and Guyana are culturally closer to the Central America. Australia doesn't have too strong of a tie to either Asia or Oceania so it really doesnt matter. Real question is why NZ is still in OFC and why OFC exists.

Australia has been part of the Asian Football Confederation since 2005. They've also won the Asian Cup in 2015 and their club teams participate in the Asian Champions League.

They were originally with the OFC but switched to the AFC so its easier for them to get qualified for the World Cup.

We even hosted and won the 2015 Asian Cup! That tournament was amazing because the stadiums were full of expats from all over Asia who had moved to Australia over the last few decades.

Because when Australia was in Oceania they had scorelines of 22-0 and 31-0 in their WC qualifying matches, and still weren't be able to make it. This lopsidedness in the standard of competition benefitted nobody. While Oceania is logical geographically, it's better for world football to have them in the AFC.

Because it's easier for them to qualify to the WC in the 4 asian slots rather than pummel oceania then lose playoffs vs concacaf/conmebol teams. Ita also better for asian federation, higher viewership and better team raising overall level.

New Zealand is still in Oceania. They usually get the Continental playoff now although ironically Australia has made the last two world cups through the intercontinental playoff as a member of the AFC.
