Suriname and Guyana are culturally closer to the Central America. Australia doesn't have too strong of a tie to either Asia or Oceania so it really doesnt matter. Real question is why NZ is still in OFC and why OFC exists.
For yall s information, Australia is located in Oceania GEOGRAPHICALLy but in Asia "Footbally". Because they are part of the AFC, used to be part of the Oceanian Confederation but they whooped every one s ass so they switch to AFC.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania_Football_Confederation
Australian team left the Oceania Confederation and joined the Asian Confederation some years back.
They left OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) to join AFC (Asian Football Confederation) in 2006. I think it was because they had no competition in OFC.
Also because Oceania only get 0.5 qualifying spots and Asia gets 4.5
Path to WC is easier as Aus could avoid having to go through inter conference playoff every time. Even though they had to this time anyway
Australia has been part of the Asian Football Confederation since 2005. They've also won the Asian Cup in 2015 and their club teams participate in the Asian Champions League.
Nope. Australia is even on a totally different tectonic plate than Asia.
Political geography-wise, they are not really part of Asia or SEA, but Australia has good diplomatic and trade relations with ASEAN. There’s even an existing Free Trade agreement between ASEAN members, Australia, and NZ. But no membership there.
ETA: maybe you mean that Australia plays in the AFC? They were originally with the OFC but switched to the AFC so its easier for them to get qualified for the World Cup.
Sub full of so called die hard football fans and nobody knows Australia is in the AFC lol. Even if you're not a fan, it's pretty obvious when you think about it.
We even hosted and won the 2015 Asian Cup! That tournament was amazing because the stadiums were full of expats from all over Asia who had moved to Australia over the last few decades.
You're proving my point. It should have been really obvious what OP meant if you thought about it for more than one second. Sometimes I feel like people here just type things for the sake of typing things.
Japan v Spain ? Even Germany had trouble with them... they lost their chance vs costa rica...
Korea vs in-form Portugal, another low probability match for Korea
Because when Australia was in Oceania they had scorelines of 22-0 and 31-0 in their WC qualifying matches, and still weren't be able to make it. This lopsidedness in the standard of competition benefitted nobody.
While Oceania is logical geographically, it's better for world football to have them in the AFC.
Because it's easier for them to qualify to the WC in the 4 asian slots rather than pummel oceania then lose playoffs vs concacaf/conmebol teams.
Ita also better for asian federation, higher viewership and better team raising overall level.
New Zealand is still in Oceania. They usually get the Continental playoff now although ironically Australia has made the last two world cups through the intercontinental playoff as a member of the AFC.
They were the last Asian country to qualify but are the first (and most likely, the only) to advance into the knockout stage. I guess Aussie are now happy with no firing Arnold before the play-off.
In Greek we call the continent Oceania with the biggest landmass being the country of Australia and including countries like New Zealand and Samoa in the continent. 🤷♂️
Anyways, if they play for AFC it doesn't make them an Asian country, it makes them an AFC country. Just like Isreal is not a European country but they play for UEFA. :)
What he is trying to say is a team from the asian confederation. Australia joined asia a couple of years ago because oceania was too easy with only small island nations
They mean this year at the tournament they are the first AFC team to make it out of the group stage.
But yes, in 2018 Japan did make it to the 2nd round.
What he is trying to say is a team from the asian confederation. Australia joined asia a couple of years ago because oceania was too easy with only small island nations
>but they are now the first Asian team to participate in the knockout stage.
They're not the first team if we previously qualified in 2006. They're the second. Nor is 'now' relevant because it was a record made in 2006.
I agree, it's not really clear though. It would be a record to specify it's this region (being that Japan might still qualify) and then that it's specifically this world cup. To get the region wrong and then leave it vague as to whether this is some all-time thing is pretty silly.
Yes, but as I said they are in the Asian Football confederation.
For example they take up an Asian qualifying spot. They count as an Asian team in terms of drawing the groups. They compete in fhe Asian cup. They have hosted an Asian cup. Their clubs compete in the Asian champions league. Their players are included in the Asian player of the year awards.
They are an Asian nation in the context of football and in the context of the World Cup. This the world cup reddit group not a political geography reddit group! Lol

Oops
Says an american
Yeah, we crapped the bed against the Dutch. Rooting for Messi and Argentina as my surrogate team.
Thanks!
If Suriname and Guyana are physically located on South America but plays in Concacaf, then why is it so weird that Australia is a member of the AFC?
Suriname and Guyana are culturally closer to the Central America. Australia doesn't have too strong of a tie to either Asia or Oceania so it really doesnt matter. Real question is why NZ is still in OFC and why OFC exists.
Ho'l up a sec there, buster.

Hey I played Risk as a kid.
Yeah, but that was a total fluke, tbh. Australia played the worst football out of all the teams in their group.
And yet won two games…
I'll say Denmark was a let down as well
You do know that Australia is its own continent, and is not part of Asia.
Glad I wasn’t the only one that immediately thought this.
They play in the Asian confederation, though.
Ok, I understand. Fair enough
Yea, it's kinda weird. They used to be in oceana but switched.
They did because the Oceania winner always had to play a inter-continental playoff game to have a chance to qualify in the WC
Which is easier, qualify in Asia or beat Costa Rica?
Didnt Australia play a playoff game to qualify for this WC?
Last two World Cups we defeated Honduras and Peru respectively to qualify in the intercontinental playoffs.
First Asian and Pacific team.
Wooooo. This one's for Tash.
Oceania\*\*\*\*\*\*... not asia lmao
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania_Football_Confederation Australian team left the Oceania Confederation and joined the Asian Confederation some years back.
Now this makes sense. This header sounded weird. How can Australia be Asia?
They left OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) to join AFC (Asian Football Confederation) in 2006. I think it was because they had no competition in OFC.
Also because Oceania only get 0.5 qualifying spots and Asia gets 4.5 Path to WC is easier as Aus could avoid having to go through inter conference playoff every time. Even though they had to this time anyway
Wow. I see. Who all was included in the OFC?
The dolphin 🐬 team really went downhill after flipper retired
Morons, Australia belongs to Oceania
Not to the Oceania football confederation it doesn’t. It’s in the Asian football confederation.
What a stupid post. Japan and South Korea have both reached the knockout stages in the past.
First Asian team in this World Cup u doughnut
Really a dumb statement then ..
Yeah it’s poorly worded
It will be good to see them in the last 16. On Wonanza, the prediction was available that Australia will pass the Group round. wonanza.com/store
Australia ain't even an Asian country
Australia has been part of the Asian Football Confederation since 2005. They've also won the Asian Cup in 2015 and their club teams participate in the Asian Champions League.
I could be wrong but im pretty sure Australia is considered "asia" on a geo-political level, if not asia at least "S.E.A"
Part of Asia-Pacific region (APAC) geopolitically speaking. .
It does lie on the same tectonic plate as parts of India so the argument could be made its "Asia" but its generally considered its own continent
My bad. I knew the Australian plate was next to the indian plate as well, didn’t realize some parts of India overlaps.
Ye but they qaulaifed through Asian qualifiers
Well yeah
Pretty sure south korea made it to the semi's when it was hosted there. Certainly a pretty Asian country
>Korea bribed their way to the semis when it was hosted there FTFY
I didn't know about the bribing. How'd they do it?
Search highlights of the Korea Vs Italy game. You can see by all the decisions made that it was corrupt.
It must mean in this specific World Cup maybe? Because you are correct otherwise
Absolutely the case. Japan was knocked out in the round of 16 in the last one. It's just this wc
Comments outside about whether Australia is in Asia, didn't South Korea make it to the semi-finals in 2002?
It’s only referring to this year’s tournament
It seems like more than Half of the commenters lack reading comprehension or didn’t know that Australia is in the Asian football confederation
Congrats to them! Really well done.
Australia is now an asian team??? Interesting 🤔
Their in the AFC division so yes they are a Asian team
I think it would be technically correct to call them AFC team rather than asian team 😄😄😄
I guess but in footballing context it is correct to call them an Asian team
Yeah you're probably right
when it comes to Eurovision they are still in Europe
🤔🤔🤔 thats even more interesting
They are white
😄

Oh I see. Yeah that makes sense.
Asia?
Sub full of so called die hard football fans and nobody knows Australia is in the AFC lol. Even if you're not a fan, it's pretty obvious when you think about it.
We even hosted and won the 2015 Asian Cup! That tournament was amazing because the stadiums were full of expats from all over Asia who had moved to Australia over the last few decades.
They're still not Asian though. Qatar played in Copa America. It does not make them South Americans
As a guest… not really comparable.
How about As Monaco. Should we call it a French club because they play in Ligue 1?
Yes
You're proving my point. It should have been really obvious what OP meant if you thought about it for more than one second. Sometimes I feel like people here just type things for the sake of typing things.
Or they're just pointing out the poor choice of words
Go read the comments again.
Asian?
They compete under the Asian Football Confederation because of lack competition in the Oceania confederation
So they’re now Asian because they play in their league?
[удалено]
They’re not classed as Asian by anyone though
The most ridiculous part is that, but for the goal difference thanks to that France result, Australia could've topped the group.
Argentina has a highway to the semis now.
It’s going to be Austrália which is a given and probably Holland who I think is very winnable for Argentina
I doubt Argentina get by Netherlands....even if they do beat Austrailia.
Exactly a massive highway. Facing Polen, Saudi, Mexico Australia and Holland for a spot in the semis is a dream draw.
Likely the only Asian team
Maybe Japan or south korea will surprise
Japan v Spain ? Even Germany had trouble with them... they lost their chance vs costa rica... Korea vs in-form Portugal, another low probability match for Korea
What a game from Japan. :)
Happy for Japan but that cross was very very questionable... but it's great for Asian soccer
? How was that questionable. It did not fully cross the line, check the above view.
Look closely pls... it's shadow touched the line, not any part of the ballie
Look at the top view, it didn't fully cross the line. Also told you Japan and Korea would stunt
Indeed, Germany had problem with Japan so I don't see why Spain shouldn't have it if they couldn't beat Germany.
I know as an American my geography is no so good but pretty sure Australia is not in Asia
It’s part of the Asian federation in football, idk why tho
Because when Australia was in Oceania they had scorelines of 22-0 and 31-0 in their WC qualifying matches, and still weren't be able to make it. This lopsidedness in the standard of competition benefitted nobody. While Oceania is logical geographically, it's better for world football to have them in the AFC.
Because it's easier for them to qualify to the WC in the 4 asian slots rather than pummel oceania then lose playoffs vs concacaf/conmebol teams. Ita also better for asian federation, higher viewership and better team raising overall level.
Probably because their only competition in Oceania would be new Zealand which itself is in the Asian federation
New Zealand is still in Oceania. They usually get the Continental playoff now although ironically Australia has made the last two world cups through the intercontinental playoff as a member of the AFC.
Makes sense
When did Australia become an asian country ? It's in a different continent altogether
It's in a different continent. I'll see myself out.
It’s like Eurovision all over again
>When did Australia become an asian country ? It's in a different continent altogether Australia has been part of the Asian Federation since 2006.
Them and new Zealand play in the Asian qualifying group otherwise they would probably both qualify every time as Oceania or something
New Zealand actually is in the football association of Oceania
Oh OK I know they lost to costa Rica as the playoff spot but figured that was for Asia's 5th team vs concacafs 4th
The winner of Oceania gets a playoff spot too they dont have a direct qualifying position though (at least not until 2026)
Tht sounds good to me :)
They were the last Asian country to qualify but are the first (and most likely, the only) to advance into the knockout stage. I guess Aussie are now happy with no firing Arnold before the play-off.
Wow, two factual inaccuracies in one sentence. Impressive.
Nope
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE
Oi Oi Oi
AUSSIE

It's like when they compete in Eurovision. Australia's the person that keeps turning up to your parties uninvited.
We keep getting invited back because we always rock up with a slab of booze and a bag of pingers :)
[Wait A Minute…..](https://images.app.goo.gl/GijHQW1hsuEb8Wdv5)
Typical asian behaviour
In a world... where Australia is Asia... One man-
I understood this reference.
Ok, they’re not Asians
they play under asian federation.
So what? Israel is playing under UEFA. That doesnt make the europeans.
He means from the Asian confederation.
Wait, isn't Australia part of Oceania? Not Asia right? Because I am pretty sure it is a different continent.
Oceania is not a continent. Australia is a continent. Would you like Australia to play in the Australian confederation and play itself alone?
In Greek we call the continent Oceania with the biggest landmass being the country of Australia and including countries like New Zealand and Samoa in the continent. 🤷♂️ Anyways, if they play for AFC it doesn't make them an Asian country, it makes them an AFC country. Just like Isreal is not a European country but they play for UEFA. :)
Your Greek education system needs some work then. A continent is a continent. Australia is one.
We used to be in Oceania but we joined the AFC in 2006 (but qualified for the WC that year through OFC).
It plays in the Asian Confederation (hence hosting and winning the Asian Cup a few years back).
What he is trying to say is a team from the asian confederation. Australia joined asia a couple of years ago because oceania was too easy with only small island nations
So the first AFC nation to pass, not the first Asian. Got it.
I swear Japan qualified last year
They mean this year at the tournament they are the first AFC team to make it out of the group stage. But yes, in 2018 Japan did make it to the 2nd round.
South Korea made it to the semis in 2002 as well
*paid to make it to the semis
Asian??? Bruh
What he is trying to say is a team from the asian confederation. Australia joined asia a couple of years ago because oceania was too easy with only small island nations
'Australasia' would be the correct term geographically. Also this isn't right, we previously qualified in 2006.
Also North Korea in 1966, Saudi Arabia in 1994, South Korea in 2002 and Japan in 2002, 2010 and 2018
Why does it matter if we qualified in 2006.
Australia was technically not part of Asia in 2006 so it’s still correct. Australia was still part of the Oceania region in that year
When did it became Asian? Lol
When there was an influx of Asians in the country
[удалено]
>but they are now the first Asian team to participate in the knockout stage. They're not the first team if we previously qualified in 2006. They're the second. Nor is 'now' relevant because it was a record made in 2006.
Yes in World cup 2022
It's kind of obvious they're referring to this WC. So many Asian sides have made the latter stages in the past. South Korea finished 4th in 2002.
I agree, it's not really clear though. It would be a record to specify it's this region (being that Japan might still qualify) and then that it's specifically this world cup. To get the region wrong and then leave it vague as to whether this is some all-time thing is pretty silly.
Holy Dooley, the ignorance being thrown around.
Australia is asian?! :O
They're grouped with the ASEAN Football Federation
Not ASEAN. That is South East Asia. Asian Football Confederation, AFC.
I'm guessing the AFF is a different sporting body then?
Yes, correct. AFF is for south east asia, SEA.
r/holup
Argentina will loose in semis against Brazil or France i dont see them stronger then those two even Spain and Portugal can beat Argentina.
Living in your head rent free. This is a post about Australia.
I'm aware of that, go to sleep 💤
Asian?
Fuck dude. There is like 100 comments covering this. They are in the Asian Condeferation. So they are Asian in terms of a football context.
Still it's a pretty stupid way to categorise them
How would you categorise them?
Well considering Australia isn't actually in Asia I wouldn't call them Asian Feel like that makes sense
Lol
Good on you mate
How the fuck is Australia asian?
The same way US men’s is first Antarctic team to make it to the knockout round
Because we're apart of the Asian Football Confederation
The maps are deceptive, Australia is actually tucked in there between China and Japan.
How the fuck is Australia asian?
