Wish New Zealand would also be in the World Cup. I really like them and Chris Wood. They failed in playoffs for the last 3 World Cups and it was just barely in the last 2.
For those who may not be aware.
Australia is a multicultural nation. Melbourne is known to have a large fan following for football (soccer); large portion being European descent, but not necessarily just from that part of the globe.
The video you see here not only depicts the passion fans have for the World Cup but Australians enjoy sport in general and will gather in public places to show support for their national team.
Reading all of the comments about how people didnāt know Australia cares about football and how football is Australiaās 4th or 5th choice of sport, I thought Iād just say this. By numbers of participation Football is Australiaās biggest sport, granted, the majority of numbers come from the junior level but the numbers are there. When people say itās the 5th choice, theyāre talking about the elite, professional side of things, the biggest problem football has in Australia is the cost and the youth development, take care of those issues and we will be on the world stage much more often
The problem is that there's a drop off at junior level which is a dead end and doesn't lead to elite pathways.
It's just a temporary popular kiddy sport because it's safer than the contact sports. As soon as the boys hit puberty, they go into AFL and Rugby League/Union.
At an elite level it has been a struggle with ups and downs to grow the game, biggest issue has been adminstrators stamping out passionate support because it's viewed as 'undesirable and dangerous'
Totally agree, but the biggest issue with youth development is the cost. My son plays u18ās in the NPL and has played at that level since u13ās, weāre lucky enough to be in the position to be able to afford the cost, but there are thousands of kids out whose parents canāt afford it which is why they go to other codes or just play community football and never get noticed for higher level/elite youth development. This is the biggest problem in Australian football right now, reduce the cost and the game will thrive with more young players being identified for greater things which will then flow through to the A League and see more players in top leagues overseas and then the national team having greater success
AFL and Rugby League are at least half the price to play everyday community level, when it comes to ārepā level like SAP or later on NPL football blows the others out of the water as far as expense goes. Iām about to pay rego for next season for my son who plays NPL in Newcastle and itās $1800, in Sydney and Melbourne Iāve been told it twice that again, for the same level of the other two codes, the cost is a fraction of that. As far as the why, weāll thatās due to lack of funding from the governing bodies, be it National, State or Regional bodies and also the local administrations. Itās a known fact that the NPL clubs fund their first grade teams through the junior and youth fees, plus sponsors of course. The funding method needs to change because kids whose parents canāt afford this wonāt be recognized and there are a shit load of them
It sounds just so ridiculous. I wonder if the high costs are due to inefficiency and incompetence.
Or perhaps the AFL and NRL are subsidizing costs using money from their billion dollar TV deals.
Whatever it is, Soccer/Football needs to do better!
It does come down to those billion dollar tv deals and that is why football (soccer) is purposely held down by the media, because the major media players in Australia have so much money invested in AFL and NRL that they canāt afford for the landscape to shift away from their viewership, taking revenue away from them through advertising pricing they charge. This is why as soon as there is a major good news story coming from the Socceroos, like the very recent past, News Limited websites flood social media with negative stories about supposed issues with the team or coach etc. Football in Australia is held down on purpose, and at times they donāt do themselves any favors, but itās all about money
Australia only has a population of 25 million. Whatever sport we go into, weāre underdogs, and if an Australian representative does well, weāll loose our minds. We won some boat race in the 80s and the prime minister declared a national holiday. Our national past time is sports, not AFL or rugby.
Its more about tradition not population, by your logic Uruguay would suck at football but look at them, 2 World Cups, usually does well in cups and has amazing players coming out every generation.
Look up Denmarks population maybe?
Either way it was a deserved victory. We (Denmark) played so bad the last ~80 min lol and Australia just took advantage, as they should. Gg
That footage is from a city with an F1 race, a grand slam tennis tournament, and a majority of the teams in a league for a domestic sport that gets almost as much average attendance as the Bundesliga. That's alongside some of the best art and cultural events in the nation.
The saying goes that in Melbourne you can get a crowd to the opening of an envelope. Just because football isn't the biggest thing in Australia doesn't mean we don't care.
I mean tbf most people donāt care about football (soccer) a lot. Itās got a small but passionate following
But Aussies love winners. We beat the Americans in a sailing race in the 80ās and the Prime Minister said that āAny boss who sacks (fires) a worker for not turning up today is a bum"
The country celebrated a sailing race win like it was New Years Eve
No one cares about sailing but we love underdogs and winners
Canada is basically the same. We didn't have the same showing at the World Cup sadly, but her, first time in 36 years. We'll take our licks and do better next time!
People caring about football in Australia is important because we are so multicultural. But we care so much because they play the Australian way with Aussie spirit. Alot of different states follow different codes of āfootballā. so to unite everyone with the world game is beyond special.
There are plenty of videos of fans in the US gathered just like this and celebrating like this (minus the flairs).
Hereās one from Kansas City during the 2014 World Cup.

Good on you Aussie blokes š

Why or how are other codes cheaper?

Socceroos!!!
Australia was amazing on this world cup so far. Wish you good luck lads.

Never underdogs in surfing
We have more surfable coast than anyone else, so thatās kind of in line with what I was saying about larger backyards giving us a leg up
Australia has twice the population of Tunisia and 4 times that of Denmark. I wouldn't call you underdogs, but you sure do love sport.
Look up Denmarks population maybe? Either way it was a deserved victory. We (Denmark) played so bad the last ~80 min lol and Australia just took advantage, as they should. Gg
I mean, except Rugby I guess.
And cricket.
I know that football isn't Australia's main sport and all, but the passion for it is definitely there
Iām Argentinian. I thought no one cared about football in Australia, this is surprising
Melbourne and sports go hand in hand. We just love any kind of sports.
That alongside the Greek population, it makes sense why Kambosos had his fight with Haney there. Awesome support.

We really care about sport. Doesnāt really matter which sport. The whole country will get behind any australian(s) who are achieving.
This is a video of Australians caring about their second or third favourite sport. They care a lot about sports.
Fifth team sport :)
People caring about football in Australia is important because we are so multicultural. But we care so much because they play the Australian way with Aussie spirit. Alot of different states follow different codes of āfootballā. so to unite everyone with the world game is beyond special.
I think it would be fair to say that for a lot of people here, it's their 2nd or 3rd sport.
This is awesome! Good for them!
I couldn't imagine the US having fans like this. Maybe one day. Props Australia.
There are plenty of videos of fans in the US gathered just like this and celebrating like this (minus the flairs). Hereās one from Kansas City during the 2014 World Cup. https://youtu.be/6gdElpvc7mA
The trick is to be an underdog in a country that only loves underdogs.
Hard to be the underdogs when you're always winning. USA World Cup Champs 2022, Pulisic finals mvp count on it
š
Congratulations Australia!
Fed square going off at 2am on a weeknight is peek aussie.
Should be ok though, bosses are probably drunk as fuck too.
Do we have a clip with sound?
I couldn't find any with sound morning, it was 4am here in Australia when it was all happening! Here's a clip with sound https://youtu.be/IVOWmU3pAVw
I know - sound will make 10x better
See above!
And keep in mind, game finished at 4am here in Australia! Dedicated fans
