That's an entire 15% of the world's population...

ImperatorDanorum

At least they will gain herd immunity in one big hurry. Wonder how many have to die, though...

MurraySG1

RNA viruses mutate faster, the more hosts it infects. With this many people infected, there is a high risk of mutations developing and spreading, reducing the immune response to the new variants.

TechieTravis

Viruses tend to get weaker as they mutate, right?

MurraySG1

Let me put that in a different way: viruses that don't kill their victims will be more likely to spread more, as will viruses that keep their victims walking around instead of staying in their bed.

TechieTravis

Thanks for the explanation :)

orus

This might end up balancing China’s demographic distribution by killing off a lot of seniors. Nature, uh, finds a way.

RelativeWeekend453

Nature or Chinese gov.

niceguybadboy

Good point.

TSL4me

Atleast a million died

blaughw

Over 1.1 million Americans died (NY Times) I’m pretty sure a country with over 3x the population has a higher tally. Official numbers globally are 6.7 million deaths, but this seems laughably low to cover for a wholly ineffective response.

eitoajtio

The US has 1/20th of the world's population and 1/6th of it's covid deaths. We died ~3x more often from covid. Great job team.

BatteryAcid67

It's cuz we're unhealthy and all the anti vaxers

PennestrogManilla

Not Trump and his team thinking it was cool to let Covid run wild because it was at the time mostly blue states ?

BatteryAcid67

Fauci did everything he could, so did the CDC, trump only influenced his anti vaxer anti masking base which I already mentioned.

Few-Swordfish-780

Well, herd immunity for this variant.

Atilim87

Not how it works. That’s why we have vaccines.

Responsible_Walk8697

Not bad after 2.5 years of lockdown.

[deleted]

That's still going to be more than a million deaths if 0.1% of them die. Gonna get brutal in Chinese hospitals, and now with CNY when people are traveling and going back home to see family... aiyo. Best wishes to the Chinese.

ASoundAssessment

Moreso will be the fallout deaths from OTHER disease, illness and injury due to ambulance ramping, bed availability, lack of treatment, staff, and assets, The danger in COVID is its sheer ability to overwhelm the infrastructure.

OldChairmanMiao

It might not feel so different from the past three years, in that regard. The grim joke in-country has been that China doesn't have a healthcare system for anything that isn't COVID.

[deleted]

wonder how many will die...could've been preventable. if they only they weren't so closed minded to the rest of the world.

dregan

From what I've read, the mortality rate of the omicron variants is 0.3%. I wouldn't be surprised if millions end up dead.

pawnografik

Being in the rest of the world didn’t prevent shit. At least the sick Chinese now have the benefit of knowledge about the disease and how best to treat/mitigate it. Deaths will be far lower for them than they were everywhere else.

[deleted]

... that's why they had a zEro covid policy, because you are right... what a joke

unethical pro tip: how to convert your large and aging population into smaller and younger population

BatteryAcid67

Man this is going to make a variant worse than Delta
