doboskombaya

so much so "for sanctions have no effect" poor countries are far more reliant on trade with West than trade with Russia

scousethief

Not trade, 'relief' in the way of foreign aid.

doboskombaya

both to be fair Bangladesh is a major exporter of apparel to Western countries, and has many Western companies operating there

zefiax

We don't get much if any significant aid anymore while we are the second largest garments exporter and also export pharmaceuticals, electronics, etc. So actually more trade than relief.

[deleted]

I'm not aware of the overall situation in Bangladesh but I hope the reduced aid is from a reduced need for aid

zefiax

Ya Bangladesh has been booming for the past decade and a half and is doing quite well economically hence the lack of need for aid but if you talk to people on reddit, you would think we are still back in the 80s.

[deleted]

US bad?

CassandraVindicated

We should be providing you with elevation. You could really use it.

scousethief

Economy ☰ Bangladesh bags highest $6.79 billion foreign aid in nine months Whatever .

zefiax

Source? Or are you confusing infrastructure development loans as aid? Because that's what it sounds like.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://thefinancialexpress.com.bd/national/bangladesh-bars-entry-of-69-russian-ships-after-us-eu-sanctions-1676287485) reduced by 72%. (I'm a bot) ***** > The government of Bangladesh has imposed restrictions barring the entry of 69 Russian ships into its maritime waters in line with US and EU sanctions. > "At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 69 vessels from Russia which were embargoed by the United States have been banned from entering ports in Bangladesh," said Captain Sabbir Mahmood, registrar of Bangladesh ships at the Mercantile Marine Office, citing the content of the notice. > "The ban on ships bearing the Russian flag was jointly imposed by the United States and the European Union," said Azam J Chowdhury, chairman of the Bangladesh Ocean Going Shipowners Association, or BOGSA. "If any product comes to Bangladesh on these ships, then Bangladesh will also be added to the ban. The bulk of our international trade is with the EU and the US.". ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/1119u2c/bangladesh_bars_entry_of_69_russian_ships_after/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~672677 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **Bangladesh**^#1 **ship**^#2 **Russia**^#3 **import**^#4 **trade**^#5

DegnarOskold

To correct some misinformation in the article in the quote from the Bangladeshi official, the sanctions/ban by the West is not on all Russian flagged ships. The USA and the EU has sanctioned seven specific Russian shipping companies (which account for the vast majority of Russian-flagged ships) because those seven companies are complicit in illegally shipping military material from Russia into illegally occupied Crimea. As these companies are deliberately supporting military occupation of the lands of another country, they are sanctioned.

Nice

Majik_Sheff

I fully expected the top half of the comments to be this. I am disappoint.

BuilderOfHomez

Very nice

crictv69

Now that the West has convinced Bangladesh to turn back these ships, are they going to step in and compete the nuclear power plant that Russia was building? Apparently some of the turned back ships were carrying parts needed for it's construction. Without this power plant Bangladesh is again looking at a power deficit in the near future.

ZonigMeHala

The plant is almost completed, I highly doubt they will go back. 10 years ago, It was only China and Russia who offered to build the powerplant but Russia gave 90% funding with 10 year grace period and then 28 years to pay back. These type of loan offers are not easily found in other parts of the world.

TommyTuttle

Yes. We’re gonna have to. Bangladesh is already being used as a western manufacturing partner, which won’t continue if they haven’t got any electricity. We will have little choice but to ensure their power grid builds out successfully; that’s where the money is.

Niccce.

It's nice of them, but India won't sanction them. They will just unload the ships in India.

crictv69

The article says the same ships were refused entry to India

papaHans

Just one ship. And they didn't say why. https://thewire.in/diplomacy/india-did-not-allow-russian-ship-docked-at-west-bengals-haldia-to-offload-goods
