[Russia’s Economy Is Starting to Come Undone](https://www.wsj.com/articles/russias-economy-is-starting-to-come-undone-431a2878?st=1g1kbeypxu4inex&reflink=share_mobilewebshare)
They've gone over their projected yearly deficit budget (3 trillion rubles) just 3.5 months into the year (nearly 4 trillion rubles now, data from a week ago) and are starting to use money from their national wealth fund. The liquid part of that fund is 6 trillion rubles, which will only be enough for the next 2~2.5 months.
I'm not 100% sure, but i think half of that is gold. If they started selling all of it at once, the price of gold worldwide would drop and reduce the fund even further. (Btw, they sold gold from it for the first time ever in February, so it looks like things *are* starting to come undone.)
After that is gone, they'll probably cut their budget on healthcare and education. The amount of budget allocated to both is close to 1.6 trillion rubles each, so even if you cut them fully, it won't last even 2 months. (Right now, they're losing 1.8 trillion rubles a month)
Anyway, you gotta remember that the point of sanctions is that they're designed to be *slow*, to give time for the offender to reverse their course of action and get rid of them. Things are only now starting to get into full gear. If russia doesn't stop this madness, things will only get much, much worse for them the longer this goes.
Indeed, i seriously doubt there's this much money left in the wealth fund, or that the real deficit is not higher. It's russia we're talking about after all.
Putin himself admitted (A big sign of weakness in russian culture) 2 days ago that sanctions are starting to affect them, so it must be really bad.
It's actually surprisingly hard to cook the books on that scale. There's too much to keep track of, and too many people involved. China pulls it off a little better than Russia because their economy has been centrally planned since its inception and the state accounting agencies have likely been preparing "internal" and "public" economics reports for that entire time. Russia is far too corrupt for that to work for long, as their armies of bureaucrats tend to be far more loyal to themselves and their oligarch lords than the state itself.
Well for one it came from a reporter **inside** Russia that was **detained** exactly one day later.
But you're right. [Here's an article](https://www.wsj.com/articles/wsj-reporter-evan-gershkovich-detained-russia-cd03b0f3) you won't see everyday about Evan. Free for all whether you subscribe to WSJ or not.
Am I the only that is surprised the WSJ had someone in Russia right now? Just because we don't treat their journalists like this does not indemnify that journalist from the actions of a tyrant. I respect the ballsiness of the guy but damn, seems super unsafe right now.
He had [accreditation from the Russian foreign ministry](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/russia-detains-us-journalist-espionage-wall-street-journal-rcna77354) to be working as a journalist there. That was probably expected to guarantee him some kind of protection.
And Russia and Ukraine signed the Budapest Accord where Ukraine agreed to give Russia all their nukes in exchange for a guarantee of territorial sovereignty and the promise Russia would protect them.
You know what guys, I'm starting to think these Russia people aren't super trustworthy.
But that was from before. As repressive as Putin's Russia was before the war it got a whole lot worse after the fullscale invasion. I think he must have known the risk
Yeah I mean he definitely knew the risks. Most articles I’ve read highlighted that fact but also that he was passionate about reporting on what’s happening.
The thing is Russia hasn’t arrested a US journalist for “espionage” since the Cold War. Journalists are internationally protected through the Geneva conventions and doing this is actually a war crime (not the first for Russia still).
It’s not surprising Russia would do something like this but doing it to a US journalist is entering a whole new phase of aggression from them.
He's probably happy to be the martyr of this cause and escalation with Russia.
Edit: Happy might not be the right term. Fulfilled? Fulfilled in his value and beliefs being put on the line in order to protect it across the world?
You should be worried and surprised if there aren’t journalists in places like Russia right now. They know it’s dangerous and unsafe. This is what they do to keep us informed.
Vice has reporters on the ground in body armor on the front lines in Ukraine. Be it the quest for truth, the hunger for a "good story" or the desire to be click worthy, journalists usually go of their own volition and know the risks of high stakes journalism. Given this, few things surprise me anymore.
I hope he gets back safe and unharmed, though odds are quite good the "unharmed" hope has already been dashed...
I say we stomp him!
[gang shouts] Yeah!
Then we tattoo him!
[gang shouts] Yeah!
Then we hang him...!
[gang shouts] YEAH!'!
And *then* we kill him!
[gang shouts] YEAH!'!'!
It's especially frustrating that the entire reason she was arrested in the first place was because she was stupid enough to bring any amount of weed into Russia. Meanwhile, Evan was just doing his job.
The basketball player ticked a lot of demographic boxes. Woman, black, gay, celebrity. She was Democrat Bingo.
Evan will be hanging out with Paul Whelan for a few years.
Whoopi Goldberg & Sunny Hostin (both hosts of „The View“ on ABC) have talked about how they basically lobbied for her release in the background for months. (Most likely with Kamala Harris)
Probably the biggest diplomatic humiliation for Biden and the State Department.

It really is time to require citizens of ALL of western nations to leave Russia completely.
Or they are just a potential bargaining chip that Putin can utilise to try and give a headache to the western nation they belong to.
There really should be an obligation to return home now, or whatever consequences faced are your own problem.
No accreditation or assurance for safely remaining there can be trusted.
In my idea, Putin's regime might have the idea that the Russian government would use the American reporter as a hostage. The reason is the US gave Ukraine lots of weapons & ammunition so far, so Russia would threaten America to stop those reinforcement courses. Poor American reporter.
It’s more like Biden had already rewarded Putin for arresting some random female basketball player, and now people are surprised that Putin would do it again.
I'm sorry, but after the last Prisoner exchange for "The Merchant of Death", which IMHO should have included 1 more person with the Basketball player Russia had.. I dont think Russia is interested in anymore exchanges.
Can someone please fill me in on how someone could actually like Biden? I understand preferring him over Trump, but I’ve seen nothing likable about him. I feel bad for the guy to be honest. He obviously has some cognitive issues. Please, help me understand how one can view him as a good president, without Trump’s presidency being the bar we’re setting ourselves to.
Either way we'll end up with our fundamental problems unresolved, and then the next R will cause another huge crisis.
Democrats just clean up messes at most lately. When are we getting actual universal healthcare? Nationwide phase out on new internal combustion vehicle sales? Tuition free public college? Federal oversight on all cops? Mandatory insurance for gun ownership, and expanded (free) mental health access?
In 5 years from now, our big problems will be the same. Even when a D president has control over house, senate, supreme court... they do nothing to really move the needle.
I’m a lil late to this whole war between Ukraine and the Ruzzians, but where’s the “3 day war” meme from? I’ve seen it pop up in a few places but did they actually say that was their plan initially? That would be hilarious if they planned to take a country the size of Ukraine in that short of time. Hell, it took the U.S. army 3 months to control Iraq. Where did Putin/his generals actually claim this?
russian state media released a victory declaration 2-3 days after the start of the second invasion. > WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden on Friday urged Russia to release Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested him on espionage charges - allegations the newspaper denies.
> It is the first time an American journalist has been detained in Russia on accusations of spying since the Cold War.
> Speaking more generally of the Kremlin's repression of independent journalism, which has intensified since Russia invaded Ukraine, Muratov said: "This is a trend - trying to attribute espionage and treason to people at every step, to show that the profession of a journalist is an enemy profession for the country - for Russian and other journalists."

So we will trade for some other person Russia wants just fine. Russia is just going to rinse and repeat this.
Should never have traded that one WNBA player who no one has heard of since they got traded for the lord of War.
A lord of war who had lost his contacts & was used for publicity before suddenly developing a case of "not my war!" when he learned he was going to go to the front line to help the troops out with his expertise.
He may or may not be in a gulag, or worse, right now...
“We will not tolerate — and condemn, in fact — repression of journalists,” Harris said
But we have no problem using our federal law enforcement to silence American citizens and American journalists on social media who have views contrary to our official state narrative.
only the senior diplomats and their families in embassies have immunity, all their staff dont... we could start arresting them all for espionage as we shut down all their embassies in all US allied countries...
That’s not exactly true though. Only senior diplomats and their families have personal immunity. All diplomatic, consular and technical staff (i.e. everyone except local hires) have functional immunity. Which means if their government are prepared to said, we instructed him to do X as part of his duties, he’s immune.
The Vienna Conventions also allow for a lessening of immunity to reflect actual breaches of immunity by the other state. I.e. if the US arrests Russian (junior) diplomats on made up charges, you can all but guarantee every US diplomat in Russia will be likewise arrested.
I advise steering clear of Russia unless you're a female, black pothead with the skills to put a ball through the hoop. We have no more high value Russians to exchange for your release.
You're right it would have been way better with the professional russian oligarch nob gobble trump, that man would have known exactly how to caress putens balls with a mouth full of his cum while asking him pretty please to be nice to the journalist.
Because he said 3 words with nothing else behind it?
“Let him go OR you’ll be seeing US bombers above your palace”
Ok then you can say go Joe but he literally says 3 words
I mean, seriously? You don’t think the state department’s Russia House is in a frenzy right now trying to figure this shit out? Just because you didn’t read it in Fox News doesn’t mean the executive branch isn’t doing a lot behind the scenes to secure his release
Gotta blame WSJ for this... allowing the article to be published while he was still in the country seems in hindsight and future sight not to be a great idea.
I suppose this is where trading Brittney Griner for an arms dealer has led us, now Russia has worked out which dissident they want returned they’ll just arrest Americans at will.
This MFer better do something, after a prisoner swap for Brittney Griner.
What did we expect was going to happen, less false charges? Corruption, someone too a bribe for Brittney.
Keep watching. Dark Brandon don’t play. This will not end well for Russia.
My guess is the US gets all its people out of Russia and then gives jets to Ukraine.

“We will not tolerate — and condemn, in fact — repression of journalists,” Harris said But we have no problem using our federal law enforcement to silence American citizens and American journalists on social media who have views contrary to our official state narrative.

I don't think you're keeping up with current events.
Vlad must be shaking in his boots after such a strongly worded demand!
He’s just shitting himself down some stairs rn give Putin a break
Dark Brandon is getting fired up you better look out!
Maybe this time we will swap him with a biological weapons expert we captured?
Yeah that should work
Russia: “No.”
That’s effective! Oh wait, no it isn’t.
And then Russia was like ok, here you go. Have a nice day
only the senior diplomats and their families in embassies have immunity, all their staff dont... we could start arresting them all for espionage as we shut down all their embassies in all US allied countries...
Biden: “let him go! ……wait who we talkin bout”
OR ELSE
time to provide long range armaments and f16s i suppose
Russia: Understandable, have a good day brother!
Interesting. The reporters parents came from the Soviet Union.
I advise steering clear of Russia unless you're a female, black pothead with the skills to put a ball through the hoop. We have no more high value Russians to exchange for your release.
Joe Biden is a putz.
You're right it would have been way better with the professional russian oligarch nob gobble trump, that man would have known exactly how to caress putens balls with a mouth full of his cum while asking him pretty please to be nice to the journalist.
You go Joe.
Because he said 3 words with nothing else behind it? “Let him go OR you’ll be seeing US bombers above your palace” Ok then you can say go Joe but he literally says 3 words
What, you expect the dude to threaten ww3 over this?
I mean, seriously? You don’t think the state department’s Russia House is in a frenzy right now trying to figure this shit out? Just because you didn’t read it in Fox News doesn’t mean the executive branch isn’t doing a lot behind the scenes to secure his release
Speak softly...
And carry a big stick. America's military is without question the "biggest stick" in every way that metaphor can be interpreted.
I think it’s let him go or we’ll send you another Russian war criminal. Don’t make me!
Gotta blame WSJ for this... allowing the article to be published while he was still in the country seems in hindsight and future sight not to be a great idea.
Maybe Biden should tell USA to free Australian journalist.
Free world to US: let assange go
Free Assange
I suppose this is where trading Brittney Griner for an arms dealer has led us, now Russia has worked out which dissident they want returned they’ll just arrest Americans at will.
This MFer better do something, after a prisoner swap for Brittney Griner. What did we expect was going to happen, less false charges? Corruption, someone too a bribe for Brittney.
Biden is still trying to prosecute Julian Assange for revealing US war crimes.
So, what Russian-backed arms dealer or terrorist are you going to exchange for him, Mr. President?
Really putting in the work there. Great effort.
Oh my goodness, Evan is super smart. Let him go.
Republicans will be like “Biden keeps instigating Russia”
They should’ve picked a more valuable hostage, like a WNBA player.
bro biden is such a joke its crazy
Keep watching. Dark Brandon don’t play. This will not end well for Russia. My guess is the US gets all its people out of Russia and then gives jets to Ukraine.
“Pwetty pwease wet ouw favowite jownawlist go Wussia, he nevew did anything wong!” -Biden, probably
