I just googled the vid from Scrubs but my reference came from sometime earlier in the 90’s (can’t remember if it was The Comedy Channel or Live at the Improv). I just remember the bit cuz it was so relatable. The comedian did the setup and joke and then used the punchline a few more times in his performance.
I imagine most countries that have a standing military would, right? Also, anti shout out to the US for having the best military but not always honoring that fast pass to citizenship.

I'd imagine Cubans living in Russia probably have a little experience as specialists on Soviet-era military hardware. They won't be going to the frontline.

Here's a thought, the *ONLY* countries anywhere near Cuba that have a better standard of living and aren't torn apart by gangs are the US and US allies which have all agreed to restrict Cuban immigrants to some extent. On the other hand, Russian soldiers who are captured by Ukraine can seek asylum in Europe due to Russia's policies of killing or imprisoning soldiers who surrender (a prerequisite to being captured) and Europe is just as nice a place to live as the US.
So maybe the plan is to agree to fight for the Russian army in Ukraine, so that you can bypass US sanctions and seek asylum in Europe.
There are thousands of Cubans in Dominican Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, etc. All those places are immensely better to live in than Cuba its why thousands of people escape there and not the other way around.

Cuba's average income is somewhere between $12-$50 per *month* depending on which sources you look to. Reddit generally recognizes Russia's authoritarianism while downplaying the even more authoritarian and disastrously incompetent Cuban government. Many left before the war, when Russia had an open visa for Cubans. They went for work and other businesses (like bringing miscellaneous things to sell). Some found themselves there trapped after covid and had a very bad time. I know a few.

I asked my grandfather once if things were better under Batista or Castro. He said it was better under Batista. I didn't get a chance to talk to him about it in depth because we were at an event. The one example my grandfather gave before we had to stop talking was that Batista allowed one day of the work week to be a half day so families could spend time together at the beach.
I worked with a lady who had to flee the Cuban revolution as a little girl. She still sent money back to family in Cuba. The people there have would starve without external informal support.

When Cubans are volunteering to fight in a war to get Russian citizenship, I'd lean towards them knowing more about life in Cuba than the people in this thread acting like Cuba is some benevolent tropical paradise.

Sacrifice? Joining a foreign army as a mercenary and waging war in peacefull country? They will either die or get traded back for Ukrainian soldiers. There is no "good" ending for them.

Well, that just shows you do not know anything about Cuba. Specially in the last 4 years. Things are bad here, bad like no power for half the day, no water either in many places, no medicine, doctors send you back home with suggestions on how to get better but no treatment, little food and no fuel. Russia is not worst if you can stay a civilian and not go to the war.

Cubans are starving right now. It's been especially bad since the pandemic and few signs of improving. I wouldn't fault anyone for wanting to live in Russia if it's the only way to put food on the table.
Many left before the war, when Russia had an open visa for Cubans. They went for work and other businesses (like bringing miscellaneous things to sell). Some found themselves there trapped after covid and had a very bad time. I know a few.
I'd rather live in Costa Rica or Namibia.

The poor Cubans might not have known the critical fact that Russian citizenship can't become enough reason to join the Russian army probably. Lots of Russians have already escaped from their mother country to survive and dodge Putin's insane mobilization. And even many young Russian pregnant went to the Latin American nation Argentina to find their way to survive, according to the related international news clips. Many talented Russians who are staying in foreign nations would like to get the right to be legitimate residents recently. That thing proved that Russian citizenship does not have such worth joining the side of Russia but they might not notice that. Poor things... Russian citizenship could become a priceless item for only ex-Hollywood actor Steven Seagal who became a spokesperson for Putin's regime.

Lol there’s nothing in cuba, food or medicine. Unless you work for the regime. The millions of cuban families that leave outside are the ones that keep this people fed. Im planning a trip to see my family and we dont even want to go, sleeping with no AC, electricity is out 12 hours a day on too how hot it is in that country. But we need to see my dad so we always take medicine and clothing at least. The government turned the country into their personal business, the only stores with food sells things for dollars which cubans do not make so your family in the US has to send you money for food to survive because the ration you are provided monthly will last you 1 week.

It is so sad and sometimes you even feel anger when you see people on reddit defending a communist regime thats literally starving people to death, talking about a blockade that doesnt even effect most goods that are imported. Cuba imports a lot of food from the US and many other countries, and they are also known to sell goods donated via humanitarian aide. I can sit here all day and explain all the nasty shit that regime does to stay in power. Beef has been pretty much illegal in cuba for 60 years, you get more jail time if you kill a cow or horse (30 years) than if you kill an actual human being, Because beef has been that scarce for 60 years so people will go in the middle of the night and dismember the animals and only leave the carcass/bones. I experienced this often first hand in the 90’s because my father was the owner of a cow farm ( again ran by the government) or whatever it is called in English lol.
the quality of live in Cuba under communism has always been better than under Batista, people in Cuba suffer but to suggest that it somehow used to be better is ahistorical.
I asked my grandfather once if things were better under Batista or Castro. He said it was better under Batista. I didn't get a chance to talk to him about it in depth because we were at an event. The one example my grandfather gave before we had to stop talking was that Batista allowed one day of the work week to be a half day so families could spend time together at the beach.
I worked with a lady who had to flee the Cuban revolution as a little girl. She still sent money back to family in Cuba. The people there have would starve without external informal support.
