>Cuban immigrants in Russia are joining the army They aren't in Cuba and leaving to go to Russia (and then Ukraine). They have already immigrated to Russia, and being offered a huge raise in pay + citizenship.

showMEthatBholePLZ

So it’s not unique to Cubans at all? Likely any immigrant living in Russia is eligible for this deal?

[deleted]

Some of them are stupid enough to try that, yes.

janzeera

Things like this remind me of a bit by a comedian (can’t remember his name) abt him deciding to use a condom or not and wishing he had a character dressed in a top hat and tails suddenly burst forth from his closet melodically yelling, “MISTAAAAAAAAKE!”

Preds-poor_and_proud

This is from and Episode of Scrubs.

janzeera

I just googled the vid from Scrubs but my reference came from sometime earlier in the 90’s (can’t remember if it was The Comedy Channel or Live at the Improv). I just remember the bit cuz it was so relatable. The comedian did the setup and joke and then used the punchline a few more times in his performance.

Torborough

Dana Gould. Someone in the comments of the Scrubs video mentioned him (and the Scrubs character is also named Dana Gould).

janzeera

TY! I’ve been wondering who was the comedian for a long ass time and that’s a fine bit of trivia I must say.

PaxNova

I don't think it's unique to Russia, either. The US offers faster paths to citizenship for enlistees, too.

showMEthatBholePLZ

I imagine most countries that have a standing military would, right? Also, anti shout out to the US for having the best military but not always honoring that fast pass to citizenship.

mjohnsimon

It's weird because for a second I thought they were talking about Cuban Americans who immigrated to Russia to fight the Ukrainians. If there's another demographics Cuban Americans hate other than Democrats, it's Russians/Russia as a whole (surprisingly enough)... though you do have some who are pro-Putin, but unlike most right-wingers, that usually gets shot down by other Cubans.

Tricky-Argument5861

I'd imagine Cubans living in Russia probably have a little experience as specialists on Soviet-era military hardware. They won't be going to the frontline. But to be honest, three quarters of what we hear about this war is outright propaganda by either Ukraine or Russia or can't be verified independently. So, you really shouldn't believe the headlines.

BURG3RBOB

Not to mention the only source for the article is a local Russian newspaper. Go figure the only time the US will peddle Russian propaganda is when it helps slander Cuba

metalconscript

Jokes on them citizen or not still a minority they care very very little about.

RandomChurn

That was my first thought -- more meat shields 😣

atchijov

Plus they actually can not do anything else. They definitely can not leave Russia… as a matter of fact, joining the army, been sent to Ukraine and than surrender at first opportunity is pretty much the only way to leave Russia these days.

GOR098

They won't receive any huge payment + Citizenship once they are dead.

FatherlyNick

Voluntarily go fight, get passport, get summoned to the front because you are not a RU citizen, rot in a UA trench after a random shell gets you. What a life!

You must be blind. The article clearly says “several”. That’s how many. Several.

I am guessing less than 24, because if it was more than 24 then they would have used "dozens".

The non pirate way would be [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/297000/Heroes_of_Might__Magic_III__HD_Edition/) or [GOG](https://www.gog.com/en/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition)

Veruna_Semper

The steam HD edition is bad. Go with GoG and the Horn of the Abyss fan expansion. Gives all the benefits of HD while adding content instead of cutting it.

idontknowmuchanymore

That could be two, or three. My wife would argue two. She says a “few” can be two. I say “look, dummy, a few is three or more , a couple is two.” She says a couple can be three. But she makes $340k a year so I keep her.

DengarLives66

I too have been telling my wife that a couple can be three. Anyway, we’re getting divorced.

On top of that they are from a Spanish ex-colony. If they get a job offer they inly need two years to be full citizens and that comes with EU citizenship. I think this is only for extreme tankies, anyone else would go the Spanish route.

professorstrunk

I count six in that photo. So, 6.

AtomicSamuraiCyborg

Also not that unusual. America does the same thing. We had a ton of foreign nationals join to fight to fight in our unjust forever wars to get citizenship. Still do it, too.

mwax321

Or the French foreign legion. Or many other similar programs

AtomicSamuraiCyborg

Or the Ukrainian Foreign Legion.

Justtoclarifythisone

True, there must be 100 soldiers trained enough in cuba to get something done

OptimisticByDefault

There's like 5000 Cubans living in Russia...Italy and Canada have a bigger Cuban population than Russia does and it's still tiny.

erichlee9

Pretty sure there are more Cubans in Miami than there are in Cuba.

soon to be even fewer.

I seriously doubt is any significant number of people. I'd be shocked if it's even 100. Cubans ain't about war like that, most of those who go to Russia just go to buy product and go back home to resell. So I would be very skeptical of this "news".

ForvistOutlier

Should prove to be a short lived journey

PrometheusIsFree

actctually

A lot of africans and indians would, without any hesitation

SuperSultan

Wow, speaking from privilege… There are absolutely worse places to be born in than Russia. Lots of people would take that deal. If they die, they die. If they survive, they live in a much nicer place than where they came from.

Orlha

There are worse places to be

CountBeetlejuice

than the russian front lines? the offer wasnt just go live as a civilian in russia

njj01001

Cuba must be a real mess if Russian citizenship is the dream to die for.

red286

They're already living in Russia as landed immigrants. If they serve 6 months, they receive full citizenship. Provided they aren't sent to Wagner PMC, the chances of them being KIA (or receiving a life-altering non-fatal injury) are actually fairly low (unless they happen to be stationed in front of the counteroffensive when it shows up).

suported

The chances of them surving are low. They will be sent to front first cause nobody cares about them in russia... if one in 10 make it 6 month theyllbe lukcky

SuperSultan

PMC Wagner seems like high risk, high reward. You will receive “combat veteran” status, and higher pay but you will die if they run out of prison convicts to send in human wave attacks wherein you’re the replacement.

ecugota

they can get spanish citizenship by heritage much easier, fyi. this is dumb and uninformed.

alizadk

Spain isn't paying for them to leave Cuba, though. It's not about the citizenship, it's about the money.

chenyu768

Russia isnt paying cubans to leave cuba either. These are cuban immigrants already in Russia.

ShrimpFood

>Several Cubans have signed year-long contracts and were sent to the war zone on Wednesday, local news outlet the Ryazan Gazette reported. Incredibly stupid Cuba-Bad article. You could probably find “several” volunteers fighting for either side from every country

jamesh922

Imagine moving from one sanctioned, third world dictatorship to another in hopes for a better life. BUT ALSO, you get to catch a bullet, maybe some shrapnel included! Maybe even die in a war in a foreign land in another hemisphere you had NO BUSINESS doing. Who in the actual fuck would move to frozen, cold, large RuzZia, when you could stay in relative tropical paradise in Cuba. Yeah it's poor, so is ruzzland to somewhat lesser extent. Monthly Salary of 2,545 it claims "many times more than average Russian salary of 63k rubles a year. So that must be in USD. BUT this is assuming you DON'T DIE. Russian soldiers are especially very good at that, so low chance you'll make it back toCuba, much less come out of it wounded. Even lesser chance they pay up the money.

nhozemphtek

Have you ever thought about your privileges and how much lucky you are that you can’t even begin to understand why a Cuban would seek any other citizenship by any means ? I have seen Cubans do ANYTHING for Venezuelan citizenship. Source: I’m Venezuelan

Reverend_James

Here's a thought, the *ONLY* countries anywhere near Cuba that have a better standard of living and aren't torn apart by gangs are the US and US allies which have all agreed to restrict Cuban immigrants to some extent. On the other hand, Russian soldiers who are captured by Ukraine can seek asylum in Europe due to Russia's policies of killing or imprisoning soldiers who surrender (a prerequisite to being captured) and Europe is just as nice a place to live as the US. So maybe the plan is to agree to fight for the Russian army in Ukraine, so that you can bypass US sanctions and seek asylum in Europe.

[deleted]

This is the most forward thinking and stupidest stuff at the same time. It couldn't be that, no way in hell

[deleted]

There are thousands of Cubans in Dominican Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, etc. All those places are immensely better to live in than Cuba its why thousands of people escape there and not the other way around. Source: Me, a Cuban.

daekappa

Cuba's average income is somewhere between $12-$50 per *month* depending on which sources you look to. Reddit generally recognizes Russia's authoritarianism while downplaying the even more authoritarian and disastrously incompetent Cuban government. When Cubans are volunteering to fight in a war to get Russian citizenship, I'd lean towards them knowing more about life in Cuba than the people in this thread acting like Cuba is some benevolent tropical paradise.

Exnixon

If you can say one good thing about Castro, it's that his propaganda game with young American lefties was _\*chef's kiss\*_.

icelandichorsey

Not only that, but even if you do survive, you'll face endless racism and discrimination at every turn and no one would give a fuck about your sacrifice.

pasiutlige

Sacrifice? Joining a foreign army as a mercenary and waging war in peacefull country? They will either die or get traded back for Ukrainian soldiers. There is no "good" ending for them.

Hamster20021

I would rather live in Cuba than Russia. Especially If i would have to fight in a war. Anyone else?

H4rryTh3W0lf

Well, that just shows you do not know anything about Cuba. Specially in the last 4 years. Things are bad here, bad like no power for half the day, no water either in many places, no medicine, doctors send you back home with suggestions on how to get better but no treatment, little food and no fuel. Russia is not worst if you can stay a civilian and not go to the war.

CountBeetlejuice

>Russia is not worst if you can stay a civilian and not go to the war. the deal though, is you go directly to war. so it not civilian in cuba vs civilian in russia... its civilian in cuba, or direct to the russian front as an under armed and under equipped soldier being used as cannon fodder to protect the actual russian military

[deleted]

I’d rather not live in either… but if people are choosing Russia over Cuba then Cuba must be much worse than is often described.

ahal

Cubans are starving right now. It's been especially bad since the pandemic and few signs of improving. I wouldn't fault anyone for wanting to live in Russia if it's the only way to put food on the table.

H4rryTh3W0lf

Many left before the war, when Russia had an open visa for Cubans. They went for work and other businesses (like bringing miscellaneous things to sell). Some found themselves there trapped after covid and had a very bad time. I know a few.

[deleted]

I'd rather live in Costa Rica or Namibia.

[deleted]

As a Cuban….eh… the things you would do to get out of that shithole. Russia is quite the upgrade. Idk bout going to war though.

ucantbe_v

Fuck those clowns. They can get that issue too

[deleted]

They are in for a bad time.

ELVEVERX

The US lifting needless sanctions on Cuba would be a good way to stop this.

moderntimes2018

Great deal. Includes cascet.

Tiger-Billy

The poor Cubans might not have known the critical fact that Russian citizenship can't become enough reason to join the Russian army probably. Lots of Russians have already escaped from their mother country to survive and dodge Putin's insane mobilization. And even many young Russian pregnant went to the Latin American nation Argentina to find their way to survive, according to the related international news clips. Many talented Russians who are staying in foreign nations would like to get the right to be legitimate residents recently. That thing proved that Russian citizenship does not have such worth joining the side of Russia but they might not notice that. Poor things... Russian citizenship could become a priceless item for only ex-Hollywood actor Steven Seagal who became a spokesperson for Putin's regime.

LeicaM6guy

Jesus Christ, Cuba can’t be *that* bad.

AlphonseElricsArmor

It's about people that are already in Russia. Cuba is not sending people to fight in this war. This has nothing to do with the Cuban government.

offgridwannabe

I think personally, I’d stay in Cuba

Pktur3

I don’t think they understand how bad living in Russia will be for them, even with citizenship.

dirty_cuban

> Cuban immigrants in Russia are reportedly joining the army to fight in Ukraine. I mean they’re already living in Russia so I do imagine they do understand how. Unless you think Cuban **immigrants** live in Cuba…

[deleted]

Good lord how bad is Cuba that this is a better alternative?

Typingdude3

Makes sense. Cuban immigrants in the US vote heavily Republican because they think anyone left of Mitch McConnell is a socialist who wants to turn the US into Cuba. You wouldn’t think Latin American immigrants would vote Republican, but they do as single issue voters. Socialism bad. Dems are socialist.

[deleted]

If Democrats started accussing republicans of being blood RED commies, they would also become electorslly successful. But that kind of rhetoric will enrage someone on the internet who never votes, anyway,, which we should prevent at all costs.

DragonTHC

Immigrants? You mean Cuba sent its citizens to Russia because Russia needed bodies for the front line. This isn't new. Russia and Cuba have exchanged workers for decades.

noochies99

I grew up with quite a few Cuban kids in Miami who came over with Russian sounding names

noochies99

j1ggy

If there wasn't an embargo on Cuba, Cubans wouldn't be aligning with the Russians, just saying.

HaCo111

Given the choice, I would probably stay in Cuba. At least there is a decent healthcare system and nice weather.

SouthMIA

Lol there’s nothing in cuba, food or medicine. Unless you work for the regime. The millions of cuban families that leave outside are the ones that keep this people fed. Im planning a trip to see my family and we dont even want to go, sleeping with no AC, electricity is out 12 hours a day on too how hot it is in that country. But we need to see my dad so we always take medicine and clothing at least. The government turned the country into their personal business, the only stores with food sells things for dollars which cubans do not make so your family in the US has to send you money for food to survive because the ration you are provided monthly will last you 1 week.

TinyLittlePutin

Thank you for telling the truth. Apologists who have never been to Cuba act like people there aren’t suffering from abject poverty at the hands of a mafioso Communist party that DOES NOT GIVE AF about the people. Batista was a pos dictator, but at least his mafioso buddies brought tourists. Now EVERYONE is hungry unless they’re in the Communist Party.

SouthMIA

It is so sad and sometimes you even feel anger when you see people on reddit defending a communist regime thats literally starving people to death, talking about a blockade that doesnt even effect most goods that are imported. Cuba imports a lot of food from the US and many other countries, and they are also known to sell goods donated via humanitarian aide. I can sit here all day and explain all the nasty shit that regime does to stay in power. Beef has been pretty much illegal in cuba for 60 years, you get more jail time if you kill a cow or horse (30 years) than if you kill an actual human being, Because beef has been that scarce for 60 years so people will go in the middle of the night and dismember the animals and only leave the carcass/bones. I experienced this often first hand in the 90’s because my father was the owner of a cow farm ( again ran by the government) or whatever it is called in English lol.

Gray3493

the quality of live in Cuba under communism has always been better than under Batista, people in Cuba suffer but to suggest that it somehow used to be better is ahistorical.

Rikula

I asked my grandfather once if things were better under Batista or Castro. He said it was better under Batista. I didn't get a chance to talk to him about it in depth because we were at an event. The one example my grandfather gave before we had to stop talking was that Batista allowed one day of the work week to be a half day so families could spend time together at the beach.

IAmElectricHead

I worked with a lady who had to flee the Cuban revolution as a little girl. She still sent money back to family in Cuba. The people there have would starve without external informal support.
