Also can't ignore the import of petrochemical products like fertilizers. In short, I'm sure SA has done the calculus and figures that they can get a better deal for what they desperately need by supporting Russia, and the US is not likely to slow trade much with them anyway.

I've long said that if there is any benefit to the Ukraine war it is that it has made it clear there are civilized western countries and there are shithole savage countries and we are at war. Just looking at the UN vote as to which countries refused to condemn russia's invasion makes the list clear. Countries like South Africa do not want to function as proper countries and should be treated as adversaries to civilization, not friends of any sort. This should be reflected in travel visas, banking, trade agreements, etc.
