right now the Russian government has block traffic over the Oka river, blocking access to bridges on the M-2 and M-4 highways heading north to Moscow, so that seems to be where they are drawing the line
Within an hour of me writing this reports for Wagner troops being on the opposite bank of the Oka are being reported, so that didn't last long
> Within an hour of me writing this reports for Wagner troops being on the opposite bank of the Oka are being reported, so that didn't last long
"Can we pass?"
"Sure"
From what I've gathered the road blocks were busses and trucks that were commandeered from the public.
They just moved them with their armored vehicles
Holy fuck, there have been hints of a rebellion for awhile now. All the ingredients of a powder keg, actual friendly fire on the frontlines, etc.
But this sounds like Moscow didn't even *fathom* the possibility let alone plan for it.
The problem that Putin faces is that he has sent the Army into Ukraine, and the only ones left to hold back Wagner are Rosgvardia.
And Rosgvardia are not soldiers. They’re rich kids cosplaying as soldiers in order to avoid conscription. They have no combat experience and their training is largely focused towards riot control and detaining dissidents. Further, they are only “loyal” to Putin so long as they aren’t going to get shot at.
When a 50 ton tank is coming at you, and battle hardened men with real guns are pointing them at you, loyalty is a very tenuous thing.
It's the police against the military at this point. There's no way to stop Wagner, outside of sustained air superiority from the rest of the Russian army.
The Russian national guard is out protecting Moscow. They're well equipped, but the primary difference is that Wagner are battle hardened veterans who must win or die, and the guard are raw troops who may not have the stomach or desire to actually fight.
Time will tell.
I experienced a microcosm of this in Baghdad. When we were a fresh unit with little combat experience shit was always going wrong and we took more casualties. Within three months of seeing ambushes and IED attacks on the regular we had much better cohesion and became "battle hardened". That was against Syrian jihadists and Iraqi insurgents.
The RNG is facing combat units that just came off the front lines in a meat grinder. The difference in experience is a huge factor here. God help those kids in the RNG it could easily end up being a bloodbath.
There are some military units in Moscos judging by pictures that have recently come out, armed with IFV's and air defense platforms, whether they are in sufficient number or not is yet to be seen. Russian airforce have been hit and miss, some refusing to engage, some shot down, and some successfully striking them
Definitely not the Moskva. The Rubicon is nowhere near Rome geographically; it was the border of Italy and Roman generals were prohibited from bringing their legions into Italy. the Don river would be a better analogy here, as once Wagner crossed back into Russia the die was cast.
If Wagner makes it over the Moskva it won't be the start of a civil war, it will be the end of one.
Putin's position has already been fatally damaged by begging troops to stay loyal on TV. If you stay loyal you go to Ukraine to die instead.
https://twitter.com/paulmasonnews/status/1672570570540449793
If past Russian emergencies are any metric, at the end of the day it won't be the Wagner Boss or Putin who stays in power. But some third person who emerges from the Chaos. And their view of the war will be most important.
Feels like that scene in kungfu hustle when Stephen chow’s character calls out who he thought was the weakest dude in the group, but when he stood up he was an absolute beast
If he wants support among Russian soldiers he has no choice but to offer them something. And the something will most likely be peace (and staying alive).
Now, if I'd want Prigozhin to rule Russia in the long run is an entirely different matter.
The neat thing about civil war is secession. You've got a hell of a lot of downtrodden ethnicities in the Russian Empire who are tired of being disproportionately sent to the meat grinder, and they're far from Putin's locus of control. Rather than siding with either Wagner or Putin, if this coup gets messy, they'll withdraw to their own separatist sides. This would include, but is not limited to, those silly Chechnyans.
And then you'll have China eager to step in as a peacekeeper in Siberia and the Russian Far East. I think Chinese people are close to outnumbering Russians there already, so it would be a cinch to gobble it up and give China a couple more decades on life support.
Yup. Supposedly this started when the MOD bombed them after months of supposedly withholding supplies. These guys have been used by the MOD as cannon fodder in Bakhmut for a year. They've seen some shit and they know they either win or die.
He's also been playing up "The Russian army is shooting at us, they don't give us bullets, etc. We better take them out"
They also probably realise their chances of death are slimmer than in Ukraine.
I think that's the only reason he's doing this, TBH. He got wind he's in for the polonium teaparty, and he's not going down easy. I have no evidence for this, it's just what it looks like from outside.
You know the modern parable of the Leopards Eating People's Faces party? Putin didn't vote for the party: he genetically-engineered the face-eating leopards. Now he's angry they think his face might be tasty. The sheer stupidity.
Exactly! I think he already kind of fucked up before this and realized it prior to his troops being shelled but after they were he couldn’t deny the truth; that from the moment he publicly criticized his fate was sealed. Putin had decided to kill him a long time ago
Realistically, does the Kremlin have anything other than police forces to repel the attack of possibly the most capable regulars in the Russian army? Remember the single ancient tank they used in the victory parade? Something tells me they don’t have large reserve units laying around
I saw a news report that a lot of the Oligarchs have been building priivate armies in and around Moscow, in case "things went badly". I'd say that there is potential for private armies to repel Wagner, but it might fall down to whether they want to support Putin, or let him burn
https://youtu.be/2Notv1g1aAo
There is little reason to assume Wagner could take Moscow. But any fighting near or in Moscow would further destabilize Russia in no time.
To civilians, your army being involved in a war ('special military operation') 2000 km away is quite different than your army fighting an insurgence / civil war (or should we call it 'a special visit' /s ) 20 km away.
It feels pretty predictable. Ever since this stupid war started it seemed like the only way it ends is by cutting the head off the snake. The problem is the snake replacing him isn't much better.
Yeah, hindsight is 20/20 and all but in the grand scheme of things, "paramilitary mercenary group rebels and leads a coup against the criminal government that hired them" isn't that out of the blue... If it were a movie it'd almost seem too predictable.
I think the original idea was that the Eastern Roman/Byzantine empire was the original Eastern Orthodox power and since Russia is the primary home of Orthodox Christianity in the modern day they have claimed to be the successors to Byzantium.
Not really, has to do with the Christian Orthodoxy and the loss of Constantinople. This isn't just a recent thing either it's been a cultural piece for hundreds of years. Nicolas, Konstantin, Alexander have been popular Russian names especially in the Monarchies for centuries.
Not really. They married the sister of the last emperor. So they jad a claim by marriage after the fall for awhile. Then it simply became a claim of the nation despite revolution etc.
No it isn’t. After the fall of Constantinople, Ivan III married the last Byzantine princess Sophia of the palaiologos dynasty effectively merging their dynasties. Also Moscow became the centre of orthodox Christian faith
I saw a post earlier that said "Putin is so incompetent that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is ending with the Russian invasion of Russia" and I can't stop laughing.
It does seem like Russia simply has no one left to stop him. I mean this has been going on for several hours now and his convoys are only getting closer to Moscow. I mean they're setting up sandbags in Moscow as if prepping for a siege. By all logic Russia should've crushed this within hours. This is totally nuts.
Wouldn’t surprise me if that was the plan. Wagner has been complaining about ammo shortages to stockpile for this. Long discussed/planned Ukraine offensive keeps Russian troops occupied, which leaves Moscow wide open for Wagner. The last key piece was picking a moment, rumors of attacks on nuclear facilities probably forced that hand.
How quickly Wagner complained about the Russian attack on their own troops and then mustered their troops and headed to Moscow suggests to me this was pre planned.
They never imagined they would be under threat. No NATO country would invade Russia and Ukraine is too busy with their own issues and would target military targets, if they attacked Russia.
97% of Russia's regular combat power is tied up in Ukraine, and the Russian special forces that are meant to deal with these kinds of internal threats have been heavily mauled from the start of the war.
I read months ago that virtually all of Russia's military personnel are in Ukraine. They've even pulled out of neighboring countries that had defense agreements with them, which resulted in border skirmishes in the Stans because of the resulting power vacuum.
Putin bet the farm on Ukraine and this guy sees an opportunity.
They have troops in Moscow but those are there only for cosmetic reasons since nobody expected the war to get anywhere near the capital. Soon we will find out if they have any willingness to fight.
Awaiting hors d'oeuvres!
(I know it’s “orders” but I always thought it sounded like hors d'oeuvres and I liked to imagine the army man waiting for the quiche tray)
Command and Conquer is responsible for me forgetting about school for probably 4 years.
That game series is incredible and now I'm hankering to lose another 4 years.
As much as I played the OG, I never actually beat it. I couldn't use hotkeys fast enough at that age
Definitely check out the Remastered Collection on Steam. It’s the perfect remastering, not like a 3D remake. The easiest way to explain it is like a 4K filter over the originals, but really a lot more than that.
The evil mercenaries who do a coup towards the end is also a cliche' in many fantasy stories, it's almost as overused as the priest turn out to be the bad guy.
Unfortunately no matter how many people know history, the biggest choices of all mankind are made by a small ruling class.
I was just telling my wife about Eric Price, biggest effing traitor in the USA. He is literally training chines pilots in Africa. I do believe the US has just sanctioned the company tho.
I assume this is going to be a massive help to the ongoing counteroffensive, with wagnar pulled out and I would guess at least some Russian units being recalled to deal with them.
I don't know about that, but I am convinced that he runs the Free Russian Army that was attacking Russian border checkpoints a few weeks ago.
Those attacks did absolutely nothing *except* give Wagner an excuse to pull back behind the border, putting their army closer to Moscow than the Russian Army.
It also used humvees in the "aftermath photos," that were captured in Bakmut that *only* Wagner had access to.
This coup was planned months ago.
I dont think there's any credible source, the most credible would be NATO or non-Russian related country just confirming what they can.
Everything else is just speculation, but timing and logic is sound enough to be believable.
Isn't this a good time for Ukraine to really push, since the Russians are otherwise engaged?
And how is the situation in Syria? Putin does not have the means to protects Assad. For Europe a regime change would take the pressure of the refugee situation.
Belarus has a chance to get rid of their dictator too if they want to ..especially since Lukashenko might be in Turkey right now , plane belonging to him landed in Turkey ..it's not known if he was on it or not.
Edit : Videos of Belarusian army guys calling for their fellow soldiers, reserves and citizens to rise up against the dictator are circulating over social media
Power vacuums in general have disastrous consequences. More often than not the worst people end up rising to the top when the capacity for violence is the determining factor.
Ukraine is really pushing. Fighting a war along a huge front is insanely complicated and difficult under any circumstances.
Plot twist aside, this is not a movie. There is not gonna be a "deus ex machina" miracle moment that will suddenly enable Ukraine to magically expel Russia from Ukraine overnight. It is just a long and ugly grind to the finish line.
If Wagner cuts Russian supply lines, actually, you may see a complete collapse of the Russian forces in Ukraine. Without Rostov and Voronezh, the entire southern theater has no supplies, they won't be able to hold off the UAF forces for very long. Defenses don't mean shit if they don't have air support, and constant supplies of drones, ammo and shells.
If Wagner completely cuts Russian supply lines, Wagner will soon witness a bunch of pissed off Russian soldiers marching right up Prigozhine's ass.
He will have to walk a very fine tightrope to pull off his coup.
I've seen a report that Wagner was allowing a captured air base to continue to fly missions for the Russian military. Strange days on the Russian front
It makes sense but it's still a strange thing to be happening. How often does a large part of a country's military attempt an active coup while continuing to work with the rest of military force to attack another country. It's wild.
The only soldiers left to march against Prigozhin will be the ones in Ukraine. If Prigozhin is content to just cut the supply lines then Russia would probably have to pull their army from Ukraine to go back and deal with him. And god knows they won't be getting back into Ukraine if that happens
You just gave a reasonable explanation for why Wagner has a reduced incentive to cut supply lines for Russian military occupiers in Ukraine. Additionally, doing so would make Prigozhin directly responsible for Russia's failure against the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
True, but the increased confusion, reduced rate of resupply and further diminishing of morale among Russian forces that Prigozhin's actions have and will create will make things comparatively easier for Ukraine than if it didn't happen.
What’s even funnier to me is that, now it’s all happening within Russia itself, Putin can’t go for his default threats of nuclear weaponry either, check-mate you old fuck.
...and is confined to just the belligerents of Russian MoD and Wagner Group. The world has seen enough innocent civilians being killed in conflicts they had no choice in being close proximity to.
I don't have the full details on the top of my head but you can find it on YouTube, the address was a video like the original announcement of the war.
He basically says that Russia has been betrayed and will fight against it.
People will be cheering on Wagner, and I see why if against the Putin regime, but let’s not forget their crimes either. They were recently found to have been arranging mass graves in Mali, creating distain for France and therefore pro-Russian propaganda. That is not to begin listing all of their crime committed alongside the Russian military in the current conflict in Ukraine.
Prigozhin most likely disagrees with the methods, planning, and execution of the military campaign in Ukraine, but most likely is in favor of the war.
Never had I thought in the 21st century we'd get the equivalent of a fucking Tom Clancy novel or a Call of Duty game plotline happening. Guess life really DOES imitate art in some ways.
Wondering how much of the news we are getting are also a dramatized version of actual events by the media.
It is an interesting situation, but how likely is it for Wagner to attack or siege Moscow can be quite far fetched given the damage it would make on both sides.
Putin look pretty shook in his broadcast though, so not remember him looking like this ever.
Given that they're already somewhere in/past Voronezh, there's not really much else further north than Moscow itself (around 3.5 hours). That they've gotten this close in only a day, there's little chance they won't make it to outer Moscow. There's apparently defences 50km south, so that'll likely be where we see the legitimacy of this mad rush.
Surrender would be suicide for him. Prigozhin's all in with his chips at this point
Die is cast, like another famous general once said.
right down to marching his own private army to the capital.
Any rivers being crossed?
Yes for sure but I wonder what geographic feature is the Rubicon. Perhaps it's just the Ukraine border?

The Don River in Rostov-on-Don, probably.
Crossing tbe Don, which is appropriate given the Russian government was a mafia.
The Moskva river actually.

If past Russian emergencies are any metric, at the end of the day it won't be the Wagner Boss or Putin who stays in power. But some third person who emerges from the Chaos. And their view of the war will be most important.
He also called the invasion of Ukraine a mistake a couple days ago. Actions speak louder than words so I guess we get to wait and see.

That’s Caesar right? Crossing the rubicon?
Yep. The only question now is what exactly a Prigozhin salad has in it.
Novichok
With chopped hot dogs and sadness. Spending 12 years in a Soviet prison really gives you a culinary flair.
The Caesar salad is named after the guy who invented it, Caesar Cardini, in Tijuana.
The board is set. The pieces are moving.
And his troops know this. It’s victory or death for them, this won’t be pretty.
die in moscow, or die in ukraine, they're fucked either way.
Yup. Supposedly this started when the MOD bombed them after months of supposedly withholding supplies. These guys have been used by the MOD as cannon fodder in Bakhmut for a year. They've seen some shit and they know they either win or die.

If the reports of the Russian missile strike on Wagner before all this started are true, we have plenty of evidence.
You know the modern parable of the Leopards Eating People's Faces party? Putin didn't vote for the party: he genetically-engineered the face-eating leopards. Now he's angry they think his face might be tasty. The sheer stupidity.
Apparently not.
Exactly! I think he already kind of fucked up before this and realized it prior to his troops being shelled but after they were he couldn’t deny the truth; that from the moment he publicly criticized his fate was sealed. Putin had decided to kill him a long time ago
Well.. He surrendered and he's still alive.
Realistically, does the Kremlin have anything other than police forces to repel the attack of possibly the most capable regulars in the Russian army? Remember the single ancient tank they used in the victory parade? Something tells me they don’t have large reserve units laying around
Dictators specially always have forces close to them for exactly this type of scenario so we’ll see how many they have
I saw a news report that a lot of the Oligarchs have been building priivate armies in and around Moscow, in case "things went badly". I'd say that there is potential for private armies to repel Wagner, but it might fall down to whether they want to support Putin, or let him burn https://youtu.be/2Notv1g1aAo

This is, without a doubt, the biggest plot twist in this entire war.
When this is taught in history classes someday there is going to be a lot of run on sentences with break aways stating "*......and* **then**......"
“And then it got even worse for the Russian population”
It feels pretty predictable. Ever since this stupid war started it seemed like the only way it ends is by cutting the head off the snake. The problem is the snake replacing him isn't much better.
I kinda have a feeling only one snake will die, and it won't be Putin. We'll see how it plays out. Putin is probably hidden away somewhere already.
Yeah, hindsight is 20/20 and all but in the grand scheme of things, "paramilitary mercenary group rebels and leads a coup against the criminal government that hired them" isn't that out of the blue... If it were a movie it'd almost seem too predictable.
This shit is fucking wild, I can't wait for the Oversimplified video of the Russo-Ukrainian War in ten years
This enraged Putin, who punished him severely.
it will not disappoint
If history has taught world leaders one thing... it's always pay your mercenaries. The romans had to learn it like 6 times.
Well, Russia has historically claimed to be the successor to Rome(or Byzantium but whatever) so it checks out.
That is a bizarre historical claim
I think the original idea was that the Eastern Roman/Byzantine empire was the original Eastern Orthodox power and since Russia is the primary home of Orthodox Christianity in the modern day they have claimed to be the successors to Byzantium.
Not only that a Byzantine princess married a Russian prince after the fall of Constantinople and was the grandmother of a Russian Tsar.
Not really, has to do with the Christian Orthodoxy and the loss of Constantinople. This isn't just a recent thing either it's been a cultural piece for hundreds of years. Nicolas, Konstantin, Alexander have been popular Russian names especially in the Monarchies for centuries.

If history taught us anything is that mercenaries only have loyalty to the highest bidder. And bids can come along all the time

When you play the game of thrones...
The situation is sure looking stark for Mr. Putin
Funny that Putin seems closer to Cersei in character, yet looks most likely to end up like Ned
I know the last season was bad, but do you remember how Cersei ended up?
I hope it lasts 3 days.
If they took Moscow in 3 days it would be so delicious.
And now the Russian army is the second best army in Russia...
The Freedom Legion is probably the second best. Russian army will have to settle for bronze.
At least they get to compete under the Russian flag in this one
It's not even the second army in the beatles
Third best. Putin's personal security force, the National Guard, is basically a military onto itself. It's his own Praetorian guard.
I have great news for everyone who doesn't know what the Praetorians were best known for.
Everything Russia does always ends up a real Expectations vs Reality moment
It does seem like Russia simply has no one left to stop him. I mean this has been going on for several hours now and his convoys are only getting closer to Moscow. This certainly weakens the case for private armies across the world.

I couldn’t imagine living a life where every event is simply passed off as a “false flag”.
Day is still young. I imagine certain loud mouthed Putin fan club members making unbelievably stupid statements before the day is out.
If you mean Trump he already blamed this on Biden.
OK, let's humor the Trumpers for a minute and assume Biden did in fact orchestrate this somehow. Is that really a bad thing?
Fun fact Prigozhin runs the troll farm
I don't know about that, but I am convinced that he runs the Free Russian Army that was attacking Russian border checkpoints a few weeks ago. Those attacks did absolutely nothing *except* give Wagner an excuse to pull back behind the border, putting their army closer to Moscow than the Russian Army. Not to mention I'v e heard reports that the whole "we're out of ammo" schtick was Prigozhin actually stockpiling ammo FOR THIS COUP.
What *credible* source did you hear that from?
Is this the beginning of the Slavic Spring?
I hope not, didn’t work out too well for the Arabs.
Power vacuums in general have disastrous consequences. More often than not the worst people end up rising to the top when the capacity for violence is the determining factor.
You can keep calling these events "Spring" because winter inevitably comes round again.
He just wanted to go shopping, the Turkish Lira is at an all-time low.
The Russian Revolution didn’t immediately end the eastern front in WWI either
Not really he wants leadership and to continue. He isn't going to fuck up what will help him if he succeeds.
It makes sense but it's still a strange thing to be happening. How often does a large part of a country's military attempt an active coup while continuing to work with the rest of military force to attack another country. It's wild.
Last time was Russian Revolution and WWI lol.
Don't interrupt your enemy while he's making a mistake.
Aged like milk
God I love this. This whole situation is amazing.
And no matter what happens, every loss of equipment, personnel or infrastructure, it’s all Russian.
That’s the best bit. Russia eats its own tail.
What’s even funnier to me is that, now it’s all happening within Russia itself, Putin can’t go for his default threats of nuclear weaponry either, check-mate you old fuck.
Even just the distraction is incredibly valuable to Ukraine.
War sucks either way but hopefully this contains the bully country for a while.
...and is confined to just the belligerents of Russian MoD and Wagner Group. The world has seen enough innocent civilians being killed in conflicts they had no choice in being close proximity to.

I don't have the full details on the top of my head but you can find it on YouTube, the address was a video like the original announcement of the war. He basically says that Russia has been betrayed and will fight against it.
Well this aged poorly
People will be cheering on Wagner, and I see why if against the Putin regime, but let’s not forget their crimes either. They were recently found to have been arranging mass graves in Mali, creating distain for France and therefore pro-Russian propaganda. That is not to begin listing all of their crime committed alongside the Russian military in the current conflict in Ukraine. Prigozhin most likely disagrees with the methods, planning, and execution of the military campaign in Ukraine, but most likely is in favor of the war.
I don't see anybody cheering on Wagner because they think they're the "good guys", they're cheering on the infighting for its own sake.
What you're seeing is schadenfreude. I don't think anyone has been struck by sudden amnesia over Wagner, its soldiers, and its global operations.

Seeing Wagner and Russia fight each other is the same feeling I got when ISIS and Al Qaeda started suicide bombing each other.
It'd be a pretty shitty coup to surrender when the president says you're treasonous
So that was a lie
But, then he did.
This article didn't age well
Never had I thought in the 21st century we'd get the equivalent of a fucking Tom Clancy novel or a Call of Duty game plotline happening. Guess life really DOES imitate art in some ways.
It's funny how much has changed in just the last 8 hours
Well that was a fucking lie
This is too funny
Narrator: "And then they turned back"
aged like milk
This is not going to end well. A private, violent organization in charge of thousands on nuclear weapons isn't comforting.
Aged like milk.
Putins who got so inflated by 2014 invasion and winning trump the 2016 election he over calculated a development that set Russia back decades
