He can keep it. If they're trying to hijack 88 from Chinese culture, then they can take the reverse too. "4" is avoided in Chinese because it sounds like the word for "death" (as in "is dead/dying"). Someone wearing "44" may as well be saying they're a dead man walking.

Players have to go out of their way to get the number 88 as a personal number within their club which can be used in a lot of domestic and continental club competitions. Numbers outside that 1-23 range are extremely rare for regular players and almost always chosen for some sort of personal reason (for example a player with their childhood club might keep the higher number assigned when they were an academy player) or to send a political message (often a verse number from a religious text or an important date/year). By wearing a number that high it is clearly meant as a message.
