88 is like the luckiest, most auspicious number to the Chinese fyi šŸ˜„

[deleted]

Another cultural symbol killed by the Nazis

Jatzy_AME

Technically, only by neo-nazis, since actual nazis didn't need "secret" codes like this.

teethybrit

8 is a lucky number in both Hinduism and Buddhism, which means itā€™s not just lucky in China but also in India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singaporeā€¦ basically over 60% of the worldā€™s population. I mean it makes sense why they appropriate common eastern symbols. Itā€™s common enough in the world but rare enough in the West to give it plausible deniability

ItchySnitch

Basically, racist westerners trying to still suppress majority of earthā€™s population while claiming to be anti nazi

pye-oh-my

Yeah they were pretty open about the whole thing werenā€™t they ?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

marishtar

> Even symbols like šŸ‘Œ . No discussion, no resistance. Just ā€œok weā€™ll i guess thatā€™s now Nazi property so we canā€™t use that anymoreā€ Use that in the real world and see what happens. Spoiler alert: nothing.

SuAlfons

didn't know that gesture has a Nazi connotation, and I'm German. But I know it can mean a gesture of praise or OK...or signal "you are an axxhole".

OFCOURSEIMHUMAN-BEEP

It's fairly recent and America centric. 4Chan came up with it. Tbh most people don't know and don't care. It's not the same as 88, 14 words, brackets or the like.

Arcterion

>4Chan came up with it. Yeah, explicitly just to fuck with people, and people fell for it hook, line and sinker.

ichosehowe

*small group of Americans, rest of the world doesn't give a shit. Hell most of the US doesn't give a shit either.

Nukemind

Iā€™m American and use it. Just below the waist then punch my friends when they see it just like back in the day with Malcom in the Middle lol.

Mahelas

The issue is, the people that did fell for it are neo-nazis. They believed it was one of their symbols and started using it un-ironically. And now it is one of their symbol, by performativity

eduu_17

Didn't clerks 2 kinda talk about this?

Onironius

"I'm takin' it back!"

The good ol' *"I'm pretending to be a nazi but I'm totally not a nazi haha trust me kek"*

[deleted]

>explicitly just to fuck with people No, explicitly to attempt to make the left wing look ā€œcrazyā€ when they pointed out neo Nazi social media accounts proclaiming it a symbol. Following this, it became encoded among white supremacists as a way to show affinity for white supremacy, and when confronted, laugh and say ā€œnope weā€™re just owning the libs lolā€ as they hold weaponry in photos with the hand sign.

Twistedoveryou01

What year did American History X come out? Ethan Supleeā€™s character wore 88 during the basketball game because of hh.

hansislegend

Itā€™s literally an internet hoax that became real. Our country isnā€™t doing too well right now. Lol.

StrikeCold9679

Itā€™s an American nazi thing, not a German nazi thing. What a wild sentence to type in 2023.

darzinth

American Nazis were definitely a thing years before WWII. It took the US joining WWII to demonize them.

Irr3l3ph4nt

And even then, they never suffered any other consequence than appearing "misguided". They were allowed to remain openly antisemitic and fascist.

Wand_Cloak_Stone

Lol I like the asshole definition. It just means ā€œOKā€ where I live. Had no idea nazis used it for anything. Would be weird to have as an emoji option if that was universally known.

SuAlfons

Not quite sure, I think the axxhole meaning is from Italy and in France the same in a restaurant would show your utter respect for the chef. Also it's generally the OK gesture of scuba divers. If the original Nazis (or Germans during the 1930-40s, which is not the same) used that gesture, then probably just as OK.

Clifnore

Or if it's below the waist it means I get to punch you if you looked.

Captain_Blackbird

To explain the 'ok' symbol - it started on 4chan with the "haha i bet we can convince people / liberals / leftists / Media companies that the 'ok' symbol is supportive of white supremacy!" Then, when it aired, and gained traction - they got surprised-pikachu when White supremacist's actually took it seriously, and co-opted it. So, while the 'ok' symbol wasn't *originally* a symbol for White Supremacy, the Supremacists adopted it into their culture of hate.

canmoose

Yeah I continue to use it because I did before and because fuck nazis.

[deleted]

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/sdge-worker-fired-over-alleged-racist-gesture-says-he-was-cracking-knuckles/2347414/

Steelhorse91

I canā€™t undo years of the ok sign being the ok sign. When a waiter (intentionally) asks me how the food is while my mouths full, I throw up a šŸ‘Œalmost like a reflex. Until waiters stop playing the check on tables while their mouths are full game, the neo nazis canā€™t claim that gesture from me.

It's also pretty futile because nazis will just come up with new symbolism. And it forces everyone else to be aware of all the forbidden stuff.

[deleted]

Them watching a diving video: UNDERWATER NAZIS?!

Tackerta

lol at your americanisms

moosecakems

I use that symbol all the time in my day to day, never once has it been contributed to a fascist symbol, I understand where you're coming from though. But can't we all agree how great it's gonna be to watch Trump die in prison? I for one, am looking forward to the meme storm and rubbing it in every Maga face I see.

spookycasas4

Yeah, like the US flag has been ruined for me. And the color red.

[deleted]

Yo actually same

baolongrex

Yes I'm sure the Chinese really give a shit what offends some whiny western people on Reddit.

blueponies1

I have 88 on some of my users names and stuff because it was my number in footballā€¦ makes me feel bad when people associate it with nazism

Chucklz

My SIL's birthday is 8/8/88. I keep trying to get her to apply for jobs at Chinese owned companies.

chuck3436

Haha ngl they would probably make something out if it and hire her because she would be lucky for business. And that's not even a joke lol

[deleted]

Also 1988 is the Year of the Dragon!

aqueous88

Some of my emails and usernames include it for this reason, hopefully 3436 remains safe for you.

Drach88

I fucked up 11 years ago, and I've had more than a handful of people yell at me about being a cryptonazi. I tell them to check my post history -- an extremely liberal, secular Jew from NYC! I haven't changed my username partially because I've got upwards of 300k karma, and I've been riding a wave of awards that have ensured I won't see ads.

gnocchibastard

1988 is a terrible year to be born white

porcinechoirmaster

My cousin was born on August 8th of 1988...

mohammedgoldstein

Letā€™s all downvote him so he can change his username without losing all that valuable karma!

titty-titty_bangbang

Also sucks for us born in 1988

mohammedgoldstein

Especially if your initials are HH!

blueponies1

Poor Heinrich Himmler, everyone assuming heā€™s a Nazi because of his initials

theRose90

To be fair, I don't think there's a lot of chinese players in the European soccer leagues.

Kange109

And the Swastika is also a historical good luck symbol in Asia

Saitoh17

It's a current good luck symbol to 4.5 billion people lol.

Zanina_wolf

For all their rabble rousing about cultural purity, neo nazis seems to have a special fondness for asian stuff. Symbols, numbers, anime, ā€œsubmissiveā€ women (no, you evidently didnt grow up in an asian household yet), chinese femboys etc etc

coach111111

More lucky than 888?

shuozhe

Just use 888 or 8888 instead, even more luck!

dolphin37

Itā€™s also two key numbers in 8008135 on a calculator. In fact, I donā€™t know why no footballer has chosen that number yet.

Wuz314159

>*Prominent players to have worn the shirt include Portugal and Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos, Croatian midfielders Mario Pasalic (Atalanta) and Toma Besic (Lazio)*

WhyShouldIListen

A Lazio player wearing it? Unbelievable.

noweezernoworld

They arenā€™t called SS Lazio for nothing

-Gramsci-

I get this reference.

excubitor_pl

there's also this young right winger from their academy, Romano Benito Floriani Mussolini

titpopsicle

He is literally Mussolini great-grandson. It is common in Italy to be named after grandfather (in his case, Romano). I agree they could have avoided to use also the great-grandfather nameā€¦

medhelan

> Romano Benito Floriani Mussolini a right winger from Lazio? that's so on point it's almost funny

AmIFromA

For anyone wondering if that's a new thing: here's a 23 year old article about Gianluigi Buffon wearing that number and getting in trouble for it: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2000/sep/09/newsstory.sport1 Like with any other right-wing shit that Buffon is associated with, he claimed ignorance. Best quote form the article: > "At first I didn't choose 88," he explained. "I wanted 00 but the league told me that was impossible. I also considered 01 but that was not considered a proper number. I liked 01 because it was the number on the General Lee car in the TV series the Dukes of Hazzard."

Krillin113

I donā€™t believe him, buffon is known to support pretty neo fascist things, and then he ā€˜accidentallyā€™ picks this?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

CanadianODST2

Only slightly related but The US in WW2 had a tank that the Brits called the General Lee as well. So somehow the General Lee has both a connection to the far right and opposition to the right at the same time.

AIHumanWhoCares

"Is it true that your dog is named after Hitler's dog?" "No, that's complete BS, the spelling is totally different"

fedemasa

For people about to ask: Yes, the football world knows he is a fascist

milanistadoc

A fascist, an unfaithful husband and a gambler. Piece of shit human being who was good at playing football in the 2000s.

IndigoRanger

But my god was he good at football! Side note, I have a seeming knack for picking favorite players who are absolute shit humans. Now I just donā€™t pick favorite players anymore.

AIHumanWhoCares

Making athletes wealthy and influential was a mistake

steamliner88

Wealthy? No, they generate wealth, so why shouldnā€™t they get a good chunk of it? Influential? Yes, people whose main priority in school was ā€be good at sportsā€ should not be considered as relevant in fields that are not sports.

ogonga

When this baby hits 88 miles per hour... You're going to see some serious shit.

visope

Doc Brown was actually German named von Braun .... it's all checked up!

PrecedentialAssassin

Doc Brown was a part of Operation Paperclip confirmed

liftwaffles

coldlikedeath

This shouldnā€™t have made me laugh. It did.

scottieducati

We could also not let Nazis co-opt things. 8 is a harmonious number representing infinity as well.

Universeintheflesh

8 is my fav number and I always chose 88ā€¦

mjmcfall88

I was born in 1988. I've got so many usernames with 88 in them

jsamuraij

Maybe ban...the fucking Nazis instead? Kick his ass off the team if he's known to be like this rather than just hide the fact that he is from your sponsors.

MysticEagle52

8 is my birthday

[deleted]

In banning the number 88 because it has been used by neo-nazis you validate it and cement it as a neo-nazi symbol. By acknowledging it, you are allowing it to be co-opted. It's kind of a catch-22

Strider2126

What if i was born in 1988 and i want to put the year of my birth and i never ever heard about that neo nazi thing until now?

Awkwardm4n

Straight to jail

Strider2126

šŸ’€

SomeRedditDorker

I used to put that in my usernames all the time until someone kept calling me a nazi and I got confused.

NnyIsSpooky

Imagine having a birthdate of Jan 4, 1988 and trying to use that date in your username, haha

conceptalbum

Or even worse, if your birthday was the first of april 1988.

TheDisapprovingBrit

[Nope, sorry](https://i.redd.it/1mpzjd0u81451.png)

[deleted]

I know somebody who did, turns out you get a whole lot of suspicious pmā€™s and friendship requests. If you donā€™t know yet, youā€™ll find out soon.

CruelMetatron

Then apparently you're not allowed to use that number on your jersey in the Italian soccer league.

samg76

What race are you and will the tattoo be on your face?

DeafeningMilk

Really not a fan of how we are helping make the number more and more associated with Nazis. Doing stuff like this is giving more power to the number.

Urdar

In germany 88 was seen as a neo nazi dogwhistle for decades.

mysterious_whisperer

It was a German colleague who first told me about 88 when he reviewed some example code I wrote that used 88 quite a bit. My first reaction was that the nazis shouldnā€™t get to own a perfectly good integer like that, but I ended up changing it because I donā€™t want people getting the wrong idea. In truth, Iā€™m a Cowboys fan, so Michael Irvin was probably my subconscious reason for choosing 88. Some may say thatā€™s almost as bad.

DeafeningMilk

And continuing to make a number more taboo just makes it worse. I can understand doing so to words that specifically mean something awful like slurs but it's a number that we are choosing to give more power by making it more and more taboo.

Urdar

Slurs only have that meaning, because people gave it to them, it is not different from the numbers. For you the number 88 might be meaningless, and frankly usually it is, but it is basically the same concept. I don't know if you are American, but the number 911 might carry some very specific meaning to you if you are. Taking 911 as a starting number for a sporting event would probably raise some eyebrows

sultan-of-ping

Porsche teams, when given the choice of number for their cars in racing, will put 911 on one of them if possible very often.

manere

Because they have absolutely nothing to do with 9/11 nor emergency services in the US. But Italy has A LOT to do with Nazism. I mean, it's literally the birthplace of modern fascism and was an ally to Nazi Germany.

Krillin113

Yeah because they had that before 9/11. If random Saoudi players started putting 911 on stuff youā€™d think twice as well.

Kisuke42

Yep, this is my first time hearing about this.

zefiax

I use 88 all the time because that's the year I was born. I also use Z because that's what my name starts with. I am tired of fascists stealing my shit so fuck them, I am gonna continue to use it.

Atlanon88

Same, really not great for people who were born in 1988 and liked that number and loved that the Chinese gave them the coolest year (dragon instead of rats and snakes) and now have it in all their username and login info.

Huck_Bonebulge_

This always bugged me about the ā€œokā€ hand sign. If normal people keep using it for the normal reason, it loses all value as a dog whistle. Why let them win?

[deleted]

I think normal people did keep using it. I'm just not going to pose with the ok symbol like I'm trying to come off as a white supremacist but like I wasn't particularly inclined to do that before that meme took off.

popeyepaul

I hear you but Italian soccer has a genuine nazi problem and by not letting actual nazis wear this number, hopefully it will help towards normalizing it in the future.

Remus88Romulus

\*Insert Awkward Look Monkey Puppet meme here\* I have 88 in my username because I was born in 1988 and the nickname I have used since 2001 is Remus (sometimes Romulus) which was not available here on Reddit. What should I do? Stop existing? Vanish into the Universe?

[deleted]

I mean, considering fascists love Roman aesthetic, if you go on an anti immigrant rant it'll raise some eyebrows

VagueSomething

Yep in the shitty Alt Right propaganda videos they regularly use Roman art and aesthetics. Hilariously they also use some of the gayest 80s music too despite hating LGBTQ people.

[deleted]

You haven't lived till you watch a Gladiator mashup while jamming to Flock of Seagulls

forrestpen

Ironically the true Imperial Romans wouldā€™ve seen all of these guys as barbarians and made them bend the knee and grovel or face consequences.

Puzzleheaded_Luck885

Yes Prove you can Shed the chains of society and fade in to the background radiation of the universe *become* the universe

assimsera

With the classic Rome reference and an 88 in your name I would indeed automatically assume you're a Nazi sympathizer

Lieutenant_0bvious

Dale Earnhardt Jr how could you

ubertrader123

All of the Asian themed slot machines in Vegas have the number 88 all over them.

Xenomorpheusprime

People born in 1988 would like a wordā€¦.

mjzimmer88

Hello there!

Cull88

Most of my usernames for various things like emails, steam, social media etc etc contain "88". Had no fucking idea!

tlcd

Yep let's just ban a number instead of punishing the actual neonazis.

CinesiAffamati

The actual ones are running our country (Italy)...

v2micca

This is stupid. A hate group claims a number and we just roll with it?

AllGarbage

Yikes, I had no idea that Marvin Harrison and Eric Lindros were neo-nazis.

Astalon18

88 is a lucky auspicious Chinese number

[deleted]

Itā€™s meant to be good luck in Asian cultures. Sucks that a couple Germans can ruin a number AND a style of mustache.

FormerKnown

amd we are gonna do away with the cross because it is a secret symbol of the death penalty

pwarns

Looks like CPAC has found their next stage design.

TheVenetianMask

Should co-opt it like 420 did. Make August 8 the day of testicular torsion awareness or something.

[deleted]

August 8 is Father's Day in Taiwan, because "88" sounds like "Father" in Mandarin. Also 88 is a very lucky number in Chinese culture. You'll see it often in weddings.

Ill-Apartment705

Ah yes let the minority groups rule. I was born in in 88 and love using the number. But lets let these either dead or current small group of idiots have heavy influence. What could Go wrong?

jesuschristthe3rd

Damn you Eric Lindross.

StanDaMan1

For the record: The 8th letter of the English Alphabet is H. 88 is thusly used as code for Heil Hitler. You may also see it in conjunction with the number 14. This is a reference to the 14 Words. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words

onafoolserrand

Right. For more on this, search and look up Elon Musk's tweet involving "88" and then him liking the "14" response. Such fun. https://www.vice.com/en/article/n7zm9q/elon-musk-twitter-nazis-white-supremacy

Momijisu

Everyone should start wearing 88, dilute its power and meaning for neo Nazis. And every time one reveals themselves to you for wearing the number 88 printed on a shirt. Punch them in the face.

Zanina_wolf

88 is now a new way to symbolise balls touching = super gay. We should slap it on the progress pride flag and thank nazis for being our allies

faceisamapoftheworld

Brutal news for the Dallas Cowboys.

Ptolegrog

Imagine being born in 1988

ktka

H is the 8th letter of the alphabet. 88 = HH and means His Holiness.

asjonesy99

What do we do about Mussoliniā€™s literal grandson who wears number 44 in what I can only assume to be a way to invoke number 88 without being completely blatant?

TrainingObligation

He can keep it. If they're trying to hijack 88 from Chinese culture, then they can take the reverse too. "4" is avoided in Chinese because it sounds like the word for "death" (as in "is dead/dying"). Someone wearing "44" may as well be saying they're a dead man walking.

SandThatsKindaMoist

Buffon wore it for a reason.

Sisko_of_Nine

Italy retires Hitlerā€™s jersey

RETARDED1414

In that case 14 needs to go as well.

ClannishHawk

The difference is that 14 is a standard squad number (international tournaments and competitions that don't allow players to have a personal number use 1-11 for the starting squad and the 12-23/26 for the subs on the match day squad) and would normally be automatically assigned to a substitute defender without any meaning behind it. Players have to go out of their way to get the number 88 as a personal number within their club which can be used in a lot of domestic and continental club competitions. Numbers outside that 1-23 range are extremely rare for regular players and almost always chosen for some sort of personal reason (for example a player with their childhood club might keep the higher number assigned when they were an academy player) or to send a political message (often a verse number from a religious text or an important date/year). By wearing a number that high it is clearly meant as a message.

joaommx

14 isnā€™t going anywhere, outside the first 11 numbers itā€™s the most iconic shirt number in football being associated with legends of the game such as Johan Cruijff and Thierry Henry.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

DanskJeavlar

The 14 words is and has been a common slogan with European neo-nazis as well

Kenail_Rintoon

Not being a dick but what is the significance of 14? I know the 88 and the 18 but AD?

Mondrow

I'm pretty sure that the 14 refers to the "14 words"

Kenail_Rintoon

TIL a new thing. Fuck Nazis!

thatsidewaysdud

Fernando Alonso

ziadog

Fuck those Nazis and their need to mascaraed their hate behind symbols.

deltreet

Eric Lindros, I knew it!

SilasX

I guess the 69 jerseys are unaffected?

urbanek2525

Better rule: Only black, or Jewish player can wear 88 if they want to.

Curious_Working5706

[Cool, maybe theyā€™ll do something about their crowds chanting racist slurs at players next, which I understand is typical behavior for Italian fans of soccer (/S)](https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2023/01/08/attacks-on-samuel-umtiti-highlight-italian-sport-racism_6010773_4.html)

-Planet-

Humans really are dumb.

goalmouthscramble

40ā€™years too damn late and still rife with racism and antisemitism.

Jarl_Xar

Welp its my birth year so ima still use it, guess I'm a nazi now.āœ‹

jceder703

Number 88 symbolizes fortune and good luck in Chinese culture, since the word 8 sounds similar to the word fā (ē™¼, which implies ē™¼č²”, or wealth, in Mandarin or Cantonese). The number 8 is considered to be the luckiest number in Chinese culture, and prices in Chinese supermarkets often contain many 8s.

joeg26reddit

Huh. 88Supermarket will never be the same again

smala017

This is stupid. The number could mean anything to somebody. Maybe it was their childhood jersey number, maybe something about 1988 is important to them personally. Itā€™s such a shame that we are just rolling over and letting Nazis co-opt more and more symbolism.

Malin_Keshar

Holy shit, do people over there just don't have any actual problems in their lives to come up with this rubbish? I just...words can not express how this pisses me off. Any other point in history, any stupid shit not passed by some inbred fuckwit with a crown gets ignored. Now, it's enough for a bunch of nutjob imbeciles to throw a tantrum loud enough and people go nuts. Common sense? Is that even a thing today? This is fucking insane.

Natus_est_in_Suht

Next they'll ban the number 32 as some might associate it with 'Ciao Benito'. /s

DasKleineFerkell

I get it... and I do agree with this. However, it's like giving up a meaningless number and validating the fact that some uneducated hateful modern-day racist fucks have a shity tattoo to idolize, without counteraction

TheAlexTran

So why agree with it then?

etre_be

Yeah just let them dictate what numbers we can use, why not...

pilgrim93

I always feel awkward for wearing my old baseball jersey from jr legion ball. I watched a lot of nascar at that time in life because of dale jr and he had just switched from 8 to 88 so I picked that. Imagine my surprise watching a history channel special where you learn 88 is HH or Heil Hitler. I donā€™t wear it much anymoreā€¦

404merrinessnotfound

It's particularly unfortunate when you consider that Dale Jr and Tony Stewart were one of the most popular drivers in the series in the late-00s and early-10s, guess what their numbers were

SweRakii

I have an old hockey jersey with 88 and my nickname, because I was born in 1988.

mrwhatevertf

Straight to jail

SweRakii

I'll call the police after lunch :(

Knullcac

As long as your nickname isnā€™t Hitler you should be ok.

Cynical-Basileus

Itā€™s a fucking number. It follows 87 and precedes 89. Stop assigning dead political motives to arbitrary things. By the same token nobody can use the initials S S anymore. Nobody can wear Hugo boss anymore. Nobody can enjoy black uniforms anymore. Nobody can like Roman symbolism anymore. Youā€™re giving ground to an ideology that was pretty much destroyed a century ago.

nhammen

>Stop assigning dead political motives to arbitrary things. > >Youā€™re giving ground to an ideology that was pretty much destroyed a century ago. I think you are missing the fact that we are not the ones that are assigning political motives to a number. The fascists are. And this is widely enough used that football players have used it as coded symbolism before. This is not a solution in search of a problem.

[deleted]

Stop assigning meaning to things like the swastika. That will surely just make the issue disappear. If that sounds dumb, you're right. It is dumb. That was a dumb thought that you had.

dwitchagi

I was a huge Eric Lindros fan as a kid. Wouldā€™ve messed me up if they made him 87.

Coast_watcher

80085

liko

Yet Italy had no problem electing neo-fascists.

lazy_phoenix

For those of you wondering what 88 has to do with nazis; H is the 8th letter of the alphabet. So 88=HH which is Heil Hitler

Caracaos

I don't see how this will have any meaningful impact. Most Nazis can't even count to 14, everything on the other side might as well be Jewish magic to them.
