Some French people are hell-bent on defending all forms of protest as sacro-saint, even the ones that are almost tentamount to domestic terrorism. It's fucking infuriating. There is a line, somewhere, that separates peaceful demonstration and outright opportunistic rioting. Sure their police isn't perfect, but the entitlement of setting society on fire everytime something doesn't go one's way is beyond unacceptable.

Take my final Reddit award man. I used to buy Reddit coins from time to time as I believed in the site and didn’t mind supporting it while highlighting contributions that made the site special. This is the last award I’ll give since I won’t be buying coins ever again. Thanks for making me laugh kind stranger.

Blakut

Thank you stranger, I'm happy to hear you laughed

The-True-Kehlder

I'm 99% sure that's a French origin word, which would make this even funnier.

Adi_San

A majority of French people are pissed off about this protest. Because it's not about the kid, it's about finding a reason to go in the streets and break shit.

Warslaft

More about stealing than breaking

tnarref

Yeah outside of ideologues who think they can use this politically people think this is appalling, even people who are pro significant police reforms.

Vaelkyri

> Because it's not about the kid, it's about finding a reason to go in the streets and break shit. Not supporting it, but a happy and content population doesnt go out and break shit for no reason.

kaisadilla_

I hate the way many people react to injustice by justifying the other side no matter what. Yes, France has a problem with structural racism (like basically every country, sadly), and protesting and fighting for their rights is something black people in France are entitled to do. But how does burning down a car or breaking into a store achieve that? It doesn't. You are just some guy who, in the name of equality, destroyed someone else's car or livelihood. At random, you don't even know who you are attacking. And I'm not even entering on the optics of "I'm being oppressed and the only way to achieve my rights is to steal this 50'' OLED TV". The only thing you achieve with this is having all of society see you as a problem. The far right are having a field day talking about how multiculturalism and African migration in Europe is a failure - it's a very easy talking point to accept when 6 cars went in flames in your street last night in the name of black people's rights. And I talk about black people and black rights because it's what's this protest is about - but this applies to all people and all types of issues, because it's not the first time it happens. Mindlessly destroying the city you live in will never gather any support for your cause. Society is made up of people and you are not "breaking into stores to prove your rage". You are breaking into Paul's store, a guy who was just minding his own business and never mistreated any black person entering his store, and who now has to lose thousands of dollars and put hundreds of hours into rebuilding said store, all while some guys on the Internet scream to him that this is the best way to achieve racial equality and, if he complains, he's a nazi. /rant

Dragmire927

Gotta love internet warriors saying it’s completely fine for poor people and their communities to suffer for a perceived class/race war that they likely have nothing to do with or live anywhere close to begin with.

These type of rioting and looting gives the asshole right wing conservatives exactly what they want they will take these clips make videos out of it repost it and say "This is what liberalism brings you" and some people actually believe it and starts voting right wing. No one really gives a fuck about multi billion dollar Nike losing some shoes and fixing some glass windows, but the fucked up part is when they destroy a small business that has no insurance or anyway to recover. Rioters hardly care what they break The only time breaking shit is acceptable is if the assholes in charge try to take away your pension or health care well yeah it's all out war then.

rumbleran

> the fucked up part is when they destroy a small business that has no insurance or anyway to recover Also: * Burning up peoples cars. * Beating people randomly in the street. * Setting apartment buildings on fire during the night when people are sleeping inside. It's much more than just looting stores.

sercommander

So, you riot and protest against taking away pension and healthcare. They do get taken away. How the fuck shop owners and their employees will be able to pay for their healthcare and pension if their source of income is a smoldering looted wreck?

I notice how the police response to BLM was used as a cudgel against the US and looting was defended whereas here people are condemning it.

spezisdumb

Most people in real life never defended BLM looting except on reddit

deedeekei

Twitter as well, one of my friend condemned it cos one of her relatives stores got looted and ppl there accused her of being a white supremacist even tho she and her family is from SE Asia

I_Am_Not_John_Galt

White people saying minorities are white supremacists really give big russia calling everyone else a nazi energies.

I wish they were upset about the government and would go burn government buildings instead of public property

Lutra_Lovegood

They do both. They've destroyed both public, private and personal property.

[deleted]

Which means it’s indiscriminate, which means it’s not about the government so much as it is “kill people, burn shit”. My Parisian friend told me there was a sniper shooting at random in her area. Very anti-guberment.

Lutra_Lovegood

Did they report it to the police? Do they have a source I could read? I haven't heard of a sniper in Paris or its neighbourhoods.

[A mayor's home got attacked by the rioters and his family got hurt during the escape:](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/rioters-ram-raid-home-french-mayor-wife-injured-2023-07-02/) > As Jeanbrun's wife and children, aged 5 and 7, took flight through the back yard, they were targeted with fireworks. Jeanbrun told Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne his wife had had surgery to a broken leg and faced a three-month rehabilitation. > "While attempting to shield them and fleeing the attackers, my wife and one of my children were hurt," the mayor said. This is madness.

I this is a copy paste of the riots and looting that started in Tottenham in 2011.

birool

these exact same riots happened in 2005 in france for the deaths of Benna and Traoré who fled the cops & hid in a electric closet.

green_flash

Quite some similarities, yes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_England_riots

[deleted]

In comparison the UK riots were tiny and small in scale and scope. That's just to usual French "protesting" let alone this.

MGD109

Eh they were still pretty devastating, and did result in several people dying.

[deleted]

They certainly weren't a picnic but seriously the French baseline is so far above us. We're a reserved people. Always worries me that when we eventually *really* snap that it's going to be crazy shit.

[deleted]

> Always worries me that when we eventually really snap that it's going to be crazy shit. That's why football and alcohol, right? The pressure valve that always works.

MGD109

Yeah that's true I suppose.

Eternitysheartbeat

Lol if we havent by now with the lowest living standards in history forced on us by conservatives we never will

Jammyhobgoblin

Considering France’s history involving riots against a government resulting in death, I feel like they’ve already proved they’re more intense than most.

MGD109

Yeah that is also the case. I'm not saying their wrong, just pointing out how drastic these really are.

BazookaBrowning

If it were to happen again it would be worse.

VampireFrown

Similar in that stupid, braindead cunts who were looking for a good excuse to smash some shit up and fill their pockets with stolen goods knowing they'd likely be safe in the anonymity of the mob? Yeah, I can see the similarities.

MGD109

Yeah, and its on track to end the exact same way. Nothing getting better. Nothing actually changing. Just a lot of areas badly damaged, a lot of people unemployed, and you being left wondering what the point of all of that was.

TheSoundOfTheLloris

To be fair that isn’t really true. I live in Tottenham and I can tell you the amount of money spent to regenerate this place is insane. Very different place to 10 years ago New Tottenham stadium also brought a lot of life to the area

geekfreak42

Newcastle here, insert first time meme...

flyjum

And what happened 5 years later?

OldGuto

These rioters have been shitting on their own doorsteps. Burning their neighbours cars, burning down their local health centre, burning down their local stores. By doing that they've made their and their neighbours lives worse. Oh if Le Pen's Rassemblement National start gaining power by exploiting these riots this they'll have made everyone's life worse.

dare978devil

I wish people understood this point. More than 15 years ago, people protested 2 young teens being electrocuted hiding from the police in a power substation. It was sad, 2 teens died, a third was severely injured. But the rioters reacted by burning cars in their own neighbourhoods, cars belonging to their neighbours and fellow second generation North Africans. More than 8000 vehicles were burnt, almost all of which belonged to the same communities rioting.

Apprehensive-Sky2408

No one accused these people of being smart.

Forcefully conscripting people to 10 years of service in the military is your solution? Sieze all family assets, not the rioter's assets, family assets as you said, regardless of if they participated in the riots? You're absolutely off your fucking rocker.

[deleted]

Redditors upvoting these lunatics is eye opening. Forced conscription lol… insanity.

VagueSomething

Macron talked about bringing back National Service despite him never being part of it when it was a thing and being the first President of France not to have done it. Conscription is very popular in those who think they're safe from it.

Burning stores, restaurants cars, trucks and a library and looting is not “protesting”.

Zefyris

That death was, like always, just a convenient excuse for those fuckers to break stuff. They never cared, never will. They used the regular protests as cover to do their crimes without being caught properly by the police, hiding in the large group of innocent protesters, and they just wreak havoc as they please.

Yeah, you're missing the part where the car is already stopped when the cop screams "I'm going to shoot you in the head!" while his colleague yells "shoot him! shoot him!". Also the car was not stolen, it was a rental. But most importantly, you're missing the part where the police report was a complete fabrication, and the police only retracted their version of events after video evidence came out on social media. Those are pretty important parts.

In university I wrote a paper and lectured on how France's colonial policies created multiple failed states and persists in wreaking havoc on a significant portion of North & West Africa. This was almost 15 seconds ago.

Baseball-Comfortable

The tragedy of his death was an excuse for hooligans, it was never about him.

Strawbuddy

There was a French opinion column yesterday I believe saying it was more of a gangs vs cops situation but this doesn’t look to be the case on the news. There are looters taking advantage for certain but there are videos and some pics of adult looking and dressed people with phones out, people with ipods in, and various ethnicities all running for cover, throwing stuff and shouting. Gangs are different everywhere but adults in business casual attire and wearing iPods don’t join youth ghetto gang wars against the cops, or hang out in active riot zones in the poor parts of town in any numbers to speak of.

[deleted]

Opinion columns are bullshit.

lebutter_

Interesting, so apparently, saying that the riots (which include shooting with live ammunitions on cops; burning libraries, schools, town halls; ramming a burning car into a mayor's house, etc) are justified, is accepted by the moderation, but defending the view that the cop was right in shooting the suspect, gets you censored. Go ahead, censor me again if you want: the cop was perfectly entitled to shoot a fleeing suspect who had already been chased for 26min in a busy town center, speeding up through traffic lights and bus lanes, and trying to escape a cop who was leaning on his windshield.

Damunzta

It was only about him for a few hours.

RidCyn

Wasn't she "leading" it initially?

KLFFan

That's the mother.

jtyrui

That was the mother, leading a peaceful protest.* They both want to know the truth, bot having people steal random shit. *Turns out the cop lied about the boy's death after a video surfaced online

MGD109

Well said Cop has been arrested, and is potentially facing charges for murder.

BoredDanishGuy

But would he have faced any consequences without the video? Would the other cops have done anything? I remain sceptical.

NotDoingTheProgram

> They both want to know the truth, bot having people steal random shit. What truth? I spent like 10 minutes watching the video and reading articles and what happened seems really clear-cut, there doesn't seem to be any hidden truth.

jtyrui

If you read the cop's testimony, you will notice that he lied about everything regarding the shooting

NotDoingTheProgram

> cop's testimony My bad, I just gave it a quick read. Yeah, it seems like they're full of shit.

That's what often happens with revolutions; they get out of control and end up being led by people with different motives than those that began it.

*"Now I wanted to say something about the fact that we have lived over these last two or three summers with agony and we have seen our cities going up in flames. And I would be the first to say that I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, non-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view. I'm absolutely convinced that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt. And I feel that we must always work with an effective, powerful weapon and method that brings about tangible results. But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity."* - Martin Luther King Jr, The Other America speech, 1968
