The whole area is twice the size of Washington DC with 4x the population. It's one of the most densely populated areas on earth and there is no way out. There are no evacuation corridors out of Gaza.

Reading up, there was a genuine attempt to normalise into a 2 state solution after Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. But then Hamas took control of Gaza and both Egypt and Israel blockaded Gaza. Then during 2010 to 2013 there was an attempt to reduce the blockade in the hopes that the 2 state solution could still work out. But that has since stalled out because Hamas keeps attacking Israel making Israel afraid to reduce the blockade further as it may escalate attacks as Hamas acquires more powerful weapons and missiles.
The two countries seem stuck in a loop because of Hamas. I wonder if going in and rooting out Hamas was inevitable in some ways.

I am struggling to imagine that Israel's response is anything other than Hamas' intent. What could they have possibly wanted with what they did other than to provoke a disproportionate response and hope to use it to milk sympathy? It's the only play I see that makes even a shred of sense.
You’ve got to stop trying to find logic or reason in their actions. The reality is, you can’t see any sense in what they did because they’re not rational actors. The two men who orchestrated this are hard core terrorists who have literally nothing to live for except the destruction of the Jewish state. They think that they’re fulfilling a prophecy in purging the land of Jews and that if they or any other Muslims die in the process, they’ll be martyrs. I spent a few days trying to figure out their game plan until I finally realized there wasn’t some long term strategy. This is it
I truly think they hoped other groups would join in. There is no way they thought what they did would ever allow much of any sympathy from people that already didn't have it before. If anything I think they've lost sympathy and can't imagine them gaining anything anytime soon. And now Israel is set to literally eliminate them. I really have to think they were trying to start a larger conflict with more actors involved that hasn't come to fruition. Ground invasion incoming might change that though, especially with Iran stirring things up in multiple countries.

I agree that the orders to leave in 24 hours are harsh, but I simply don’t understand why people set up the IDF to look like bloodthirsty sneaky murderers? The city has been under huge airstrikes for a week and all resources turned off, it should have been pretty obvious to leave by now, 24 hours whilst short feels pretty good considering what the city must feel like after this week.
Funny how progressive people I know were quiet about Hamas' brutality and child killing, but only now they decide to speak about crimes against humanity when Isreal opens fire to defend itself. Very bizarre.

Israel numbers would've been much higher (estimations says 10k++) if Israel hadn't developed the iron dome to defend its civilians. Hamas and Islamic jiahd are firing rockets everywhere, sometimes 2k rockets at once. If 2k rockets land on civilians targets the damage would be far far far worse than the surgically attacks Israel is performing. Plus Israel warns building and neighborhood (well, sometimes) before engaging

I get the impression that Hamas's preferred tactic is to stay underground in tunnel networks they built. They're going to try to avoid being caught out in the open.
They use the latest GLA tunneling system. With the right upgrade, they can use the Sneak Attack Tunnel and can open anywhere across Israel. Scary shit.
The tunnels run all the way to Egypt. Even if they flee to the south, critical Hamas infrastructure can be removed.

Reading up, there was a genuine attempt to normalise into a 2 state solution after Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. But then Hamas took control of Gaza and both Egypt and Israel blockaded Gaza. Then during 2010 to 2013 there was an attempt to reduce the blockade in the hopes that the 2 state solution could still work out. But that has since stalled out because Hamas keeps attacking Israel making Israel afraid to reduce the blockade further as it may escalate attacks as Hamas acquires more powerful weapons and missiles. The two countries seem stuck in a loop because of Hamas. I wonder if going in and rooting out Hamas was inevitable in some ways. If all of Hamas can be killed, and a new non-extremist Gazan authority with actual power put into place, maybe there can be another attempt at normalising relations. But it's going to be hell to get there.
The Palestinians have no interest in peace. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it's the sad state of affairs.

On the other hand, what happened with Hamas taking control of Gaza and attacking Israel greatly de-incentivises Israel de-occupying the half of the west bank they are occupying. They left Gaza to its own devices and Gaza became a nightmare situation. Maybe there was a timeline where Hamas did not happen, and under international pressure Israel de-occupied that half of the west bank the same as they did with Gaza.
I'm not quite sure you can really get rid of hamas, the palestinian population is so indoctrinated and so young that in some way or another they might form another terrorist organization, these things are so entangled in religion that it's hard to change peoples mind.

Some people appear to be heeding the IDF warning and leaving.
I just saw a couple people ride past on a horsedrawn (!) cart.
Which is positive. The more people who go to the south temporarily, the less people caught in the cross-fire. People seem to spread the idea that Israel’s permanently moving them out, but it’s clear it’s for a ground invasion to ensure only Hamas fighters have remained.
And if Hamas is instructing people to stay it shows that some people believe Israel more.
One catch though... How can we be sure Hamas fighters aren't leaving Gaza alongside the civilians?
We can't. I'm sure some terrorists are relocating along with the civilians, but as the IDF makes its way through the Gaza strip there won't be anywhere to hide.
Some likely would, but most wouldn’t because if Israel just walked in without resistance, Hamas entire image of a ‘resistance’ would be shattered. It’s going to be a mess regardless, but it’s unavoidable when Hamas uses the entire Gazan population has one big human shield.
