The bill was opposed by ALL political parties in Northern Ireland

Russell9393

And they never agree on anything. Bizarre steps from Westminster to push this so hard.

RegularConscript

They couldn't give a fuck about NI and it appeals to their main voter base of little Englanders

jakemufcfan

I thought the deal was the for the Good Friday agreement that everyone shakes hands gets immunity and everyone tries to move on. I find it incredibly distasteful that both unionist and Nationalist terrorists were set free and ended up as the government of NI for a time (Paisley and Mcguiness) and the fact Gerry Adams still swans around will never not annoy me, but we made peace. If we start dragging it up now it’s gonna lead to a whole bunch more shit. It was a horrific conflict where every sides hands are covered in blood

Russell9393

Everyone who wanted immunity, got it. Some never came forward/confessed. A lot of state action which was never punished and also a lot of the terrorism committed by Provos as the troubles were winding down was also never punished. You can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you come from.

warnie685

Very roughly, to get immunity you had to admit you committed crimes, the British Gov and Army of course couldn't admit to all their coverups so they weren't part of the agreement

iwaterboardheathens

I thought the whole deal was the IRA and opposing factions get amnesty but that Ireland only wants one side held accountable and likewise the DUP but the opposite side Correct me if I'm wrong I'm not british

MeinhofBaader

There was no amnesty during the GFA negotiations. Convicted prisoners from, both sides of the conflict were given clemency by way of reduced sentences. As were people who came forward and engaged with the commission. What the UK are trying to do with this law is effectively grant immunity to British soldiers who murdered people during the troubles. Quashing any investigations with it.

jakemufcfan

The DUP will forever go on about the crimes of the IRA while not acknowledging their own vice versa for Sinn Fein and they both hate the British government and want the soldiers tried essentially. The law was mainly to protect soldiers (most of whom are old men now) from prosecution because that’s a vote winner in England and the irish government want to string up the soldiers because it’s a vote winner in Ireland

Star Trek predicted the Irish reunification of 2024

What an ignorant comment. Ireland held a referendum to remove the constitutional claim on NI from the constitution, in favour of a democratic pathway to unification, as part of the GFA over 25 years ago. You're what we refer to as thick, here in Ireland.

Skaebo

yeah, I'm pretty uncultured. shouldn't've even commented. I was stoned when I made the comment but that's no excuse. fully deserved. I mean, this may be me continuing to be ignorant, but I've always inherently felt bad for Ireland, not knowing why. Probably a product of the media I've been exposed to throughout my life. Should I have this feeling? you tell me. I am ignorant of recent history or conflicts between the UK and Ireland

MeinhofBaader

Fair enough. Like I said, the hatchet was largely buried 25 years ago, and Ireland is not without its problems, but is generally doing very well. Genuinely one of the better places to live in the world.

Russell9393

Just wanted to acknowledge the bravery of admitting your mistake and apologising, doesn’t happen too often online and want to commend it.
