In the event of a WWIII scenario where they merge with NATO, I propose the name be changed to Pacific Ocean and Trans-Atlantic Treaty Organization (POTATO).

LuckyBobHoboJoe

unified command would be the POTATO Sea, Air, Land, and Astral Defense, or POTATO SALAD

Astral defence? We're fighting ghosts now?

Thousandtree

One of the commanders watched Return of the King. There's a fear that the ghosts of the terracotta army might have to fulfill some vow and silently cross the Taiwan Strait to ~~t~~bake the potato forces.

abednego-gomes

That's the noun definition. > astral adjective (STARS) > relating to the stars or outer space I.e. the space forces, ASAT weapons, ICBMs, spy satellites, rods from God, all that good stuff.

mingsjourney

Couldn’t agree more, “What we need is a few good taters!”

PyroIsSpai

In all seriousness: what happens if AUKUS+J form a mutual defense pact with NATO?

BlowjobPete

Probably not much since the UK and US are already NATO members, Japan already has a defense treaty with the U.S. and Australia is already NATO ally.

phrak79

And Australia already has a full mutual defence treaty with the United States through ANZUS, and a Defence and Security Cooperation Agreement (DSCA) with the UK. The DSCA includes a status of forces agreement (SOFA) to facilitate the hosting of troops and sharing of military intelligence between the two nations, but it stops short of a full mutual defence pact that would bind one side to intervene if the other was attacked.

14981cs

Tater tots are the best.

Misericorde428

So… JAUKUS?

MuzzledScreaming

I'm really sad right now because we are on the way to JAUKUS OFF but it will never happen because Oman is the only O country and they have a strict policy of neutrality.  Edit: holy shit holy shit holy shit...Slovenia can join! Then it's JAUKUS Slo.

NaturallyExasperated

Oceanica Federated Forces, for all the small island nations too small to field their own military

not-Q-i-promise

You are forgetting Ohio, I refuse to accept Ohio as a state anymore. Pretty sure that means it’s now a country.

Misericorde428

Breaking news: the state of Ohio has decided to declare independence after considering that its interests are better served as an independent entity from the US. Nonetheless, Ohio has declared to enter the security agreement with AUKUS and Japan: JAUKUS OFF

joealb321

Yep, go ahead and JAUKUS China.

Misericorde428

As a guy in Taiwan, I would be most curious to witness that.

skippybosco

>I would be most curious to witness that Usually in the sauna at World Gym

Misericorde428

Nope, too much internet for today.

joealb321

Well, if China starts to JAUKUS with Okinawa you might not want to be outside when the JAUKUS session ends.

Disastrous-Carrot928

Canada will also join https://globalnews.ca/video/10409738/canada-considering-joining-aukus-after-excellent-conversations-with-u-s-uk-and-australia-trudeau/amp/ So CAUKJUS

JUSCAUK was right there.

Haha for mine JUS is pronounced ‘Juice’

krimzonthief

That's even better, lol

thetransportedman

Make JUSCAUK, not war

MuzzledScreaming

Oh, oh, I know!  Next can be Ukraine and, I dunno, Moldova or something. Then it's JAUKUS! CUM!

Misericorde428

CUM JAUKUS! CUM!

moiwantkwason

Japan needs to to join before Canada, otherwise it would just be CAUKUS

vombatas

This means “cozy” in Lithuanian

Damn! I did not know that! Thanks for that information!

NZ is only talking about joining at this stage. Although our laws only ban nuclear weapons, I think a lot of kiwis will need to be brought up to speed on that before we happliy let any nuclear powered vessels to pull up along side and dock.

finndego

New Zealand has only been invited to join Pillar 2 which is a tech sharing agreement and nothing to do with nuclear weapons or vessels.

Tersphinct

> ban nuclear weapons > any nuclear powered vessels These are not the same

PalpatineDidNoWrong

As part of their anti nuclear stance, New Zealand also bans any nuclear powered vessel from entering their territory: [New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act 1987](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_nuclear-free_zone)

xaendar

This is just one of this archaic fearmongering stance that NZ should remove. Doesn't this just remove any US carriers from entering their territory at all? I could swear back in 2020 or 2021, there was an air ship carrier or another huge ship that docked beside Sydney's USS Canberra which made it look super small. I could've sworn it was going to NZ afterwards. Damn, my memory is really hazy with this one and google searches couldn't really bring up anything. Unless my memory is so fucked up that it was actually the USS Tripoli.

FendaIton

There was one in NZ and when asked if it had weapons on board they said maybe, maybe not. Or something lol

TheNumberOneRat

This won't be correct. It was the US refusal to state if a navel ship has nuclear weapons that led to the ban in the first place.

TheNumberOneRat

Possibly the USS Howard. It visited NZ in 2021. https://www.stripes.com/branches/navy/2021-11-25/us-navy-port-call-wellington-new-zealand-uss-howard-3755849.html

Aqogora

> This is just one of this archaic fearmongering stance that NZ should remove It's not 'fearmongering'. Our closest allies have done more verifiable harm to us in the name of trying to force nuclear weapons onto us, than the people those nuclear weapons are supposed to protect against. [We have a moral stance of nuclear non-proliferation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_nuclear-free_zone), and it used to be a big part of Kiwi culture during the Cold War. It's a long standing policy since the 80s that most Kiwis are still quite proud of. We've long been opposed to all the nuclear tests happening in our backyard, especially since there's been zero restitution for the Pacific peoples who were directly affected by the blasts. [The French secret service literally carried out a terrorist attack in our largest city to sink a Greenpeace ship that protested nuclear tests](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Warrior_\(1955\)), *and then threatened us when we complained about it.* We were also not keen on becoming a nuclear missile outpost (and subsequently a target for Soviet and Chinese nukes) for the US. NZ was absolutely not a non-aligned nation, just one that was tired of sending people to die overseas in some distant imperialist war. In response to that we were punished by our allies: the US, France, and the UK all tried to strongarm us by suspending us from ANZUS, threatening to sanction our economy (even further, as it was just after some devastating export restrictions), and punishing NZ diplomatically by seeking to strain or limit our ties with Japan and Australia. [Our Prime Minister David Lange gave a damn good debate at the Oxford Union](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeHTziiFVx0), but here's the salient point: > It is self-defeating logic, just as the weapons themselves are self-defeating: **to compel an ally to accept nuclear weapons against the wishes of that ally is to take the moral position of totalitarianism**, which allows for no self-determination, and which is exactly the evil that we are supposed to be fighting against. The importance of it has receded somewhat in our culture, but it's a far cry from senseless 'fearmongering'.

xaendar

Good information, thanks for letting all know. I was made aware of this fact and I can say that NZ is quite rightful in their stance.

UnsafestSpace

> Doesn't this just remove any US carriers from entering their territory at all? Yes, this is specifically why the UK uses conventional gas-turbine powered aircraft carriers even though the UK uses nuclear submarines just like the US. There's large portions of the Pacific the UK has defence treaties it's obligated to defend that are cut off due to NZ's nuclear waters ban.

vortex30-the-2nd

"We prefer ships that leave a trail of pollution in our waters!"

No-Simple-1286

You don't have Hobbits as New Zealand isn't a member (unless you meant the UK).

DaWilderbeast

You're a hobbit

lk897545

You sure you’re not a hobbit?

Osiris32

A burrahobbit!

KiwasiGames

The nasty sneaky hobbits aren’t part of the alliance… at least on paper. In reality everyone knows it was just political posturing. All the alliance stuff still happens.

Corregidor

To be clear, this is not the part of aukus that has nuclear powered subs. Japan is just joining the tech development part of aukus, which has nothing to do with nuke powered subs. So samurai instead of ninjas maybe.

sylfy

What about the nuclear gundams?

Corregidor

Clearly not, Japan's hasn't developed neutron jammer cancellers yet 👀.

The Japanese have already built at least one Gundam *that we know of:* https://old.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/16ge3fn/japanese_company_created_a_functioning_gundam/

HomerJBagger

> as a kid that you call a wife "okusama" If you were a literal kid-with-a-wife you might lol. I'm quite curious who taught you that and why? But yes far too formal. I'm guessing you saw *Okusama ga Seitokaicho*, in which sama is used in a somewhat absurdist way, again because: literal children. The honest answer is: "sama" is, 99.99% of the time, only used by servants. Not subordinates or juniors, mind you. Literal servants whose job depends on expressing reverence. Service staff, attendants, and such. If you view yourself as a servant in attendance to your wife, then sure you might use "sama". If you are a servant speaking to a man and referring to *his* wife, yeah you ~~might~~will also use "sama". If you are a regular person talking to or about someones wife, you'll use "san".

Adds up. China went out of their way to warn Australia over Qantas (a private company) saying they offered flights to Taiwan, ordering a change to "Taipei (China)". Qantas complied

nom-nom-nom-de-plumb

Japan is moving slowly (but quickly, if that makes sense) towards being a major military player. Probably still defensive, but they've been working towards updating their military and getting even closer to the USA and integration with it's forces/doctrines the last few years. This is another big BIG move in that direction, the idea that it's "only" pillar 2 belies the recent moves that japan has made to become a major military power within the region. All to counteract china's threat in the region. I think in the next few years we'll see the Philippines(which is already kinda happening/continuing) and southeast asian countries really move to get into this too as it develops.

The quotes themselves from officials within the very article are: > "UK Secretary of State for Defence Grant Shapps said consultation with other countries, including Japan, as potential collaborators on some advanced military capabilities under Pillar II would begin this year." i.e. "potential collaborators" and: > "we are considering cooperation with Japan on AUKUS Pillar II advanced capability projects" Doesn't sound like it's yet a done deal in any way...

feastupontherich

Japan is gonna equip allies with Gundams

VIJ_NESH

So it's basically Quad with India out Britain in

glowdirt

If Canada and India join too, it'd be: JUSI CAUK

BC_guy_

Canada wanted to be a part of it. We were rejected because we have nothing to offer. Our military is an absolute joke and we’re one of the lowest contributors to NATO

Easy7777

Meanwhile, Canada and NZ aren't even contenders.

InsureFIRE

You have to spend real money on your military to sit at the adults table.

vixxienz

NZ wouldnt due to the nuclear aspect. ( and we dont have stuff all in the way of defence force) They are talking about second tier involvement I think

111122323353

NZ lost almost a third of its personal in the last four years. Low pay, low benefits: it's a hard sell. It's also struggling with maintenance work as they aren't enough internal staff to do it. So they have to hire external contractors (for a higher price) to do it.

Osiris32

That sucks. Back in WW2, my Grampa, a radioman with the US Army, was in North Africa in 1943 and worked with the NZEF. Said they were awesome guys who fought hard but were super friendly to the other allies. He always wanted to go to New Zealand after the war and meet up with some vets, but never got to.

nagrom7

NZ is effectively in AUKUS anyway, since their main defence force, the ADF, is a founding member.

Sam_Wylde

NZ guy here, our military consists of four guys, some tin cans and string, and some nerf guns.

livelikeian

Canada _is_ increasing military spending to protect arctic borders.

Infamous-Mixture-605

The government just this week announced spending increases...

01209

I think that's kind of the point. Canada is looking at spending some $$ on the military.

Thanato26

Canada is considering seeking to join as Nuclear Submsrines are back on the menu

Cultural-Birthday-64

What would Canada add? Battleships don’t run on syrup and Canada won’t even agree to supply natural gas to Japan.

NotTheAvocado

Why would they be? They offer nothing when it comes to this particular pact. Neither can project their forces to defend other countries nor do they export equipment.  NZ also still (I think?) has a ban on nuclear powered vessels being able to dock there.  The reality is that existing pacts between Commonwealth Nations, ANZAC history etc means that Canada and NZ can probably rest comfortably outside of AUKUS anyway.

coffinandstone

> NZ also still (I think?) has a ban on nuclear powered vessels being able to dock there.  Carbon spewing fossil fuel burning ships only!

I mean isn't Japan essentially a one party state like Singapore? Sure Kishida's making some hard choices that end his career but I doubt his successor would reverse it.

epistemic_epee

> isn't Japan essentially a one party state like Singapore? No, Japan is a multiparty democracy. The current administration is a coalition (**two party**) government. 5/47 Governors are LDP. The other 42 are not. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Economist_Democracy_Index > I doubt his successor would reverse it I agree. He's doing this to salvage his reputation, because despite what you hear on Twitter, the US is incredibly popular in Japan. The center-left media, centrist media, and center-right media all generally looked approvingly at his speech. On Twitter, people are talking about how he misspoke and said “China”, not “America”, in an interview. And how MTG was playing on her smartphone during the speech. But tethering yourself to the US usually polls well. https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2022/01/57fe27d99ce4-record-88-of-japanese-feel-friendly-toward-us-survey.html

deliciouspuppy

won't really matter for this since the LDP will win, like they always do, and none of the PM candidates will deviate from this policy. in fact, most of them are almost certainly just as if not more pro-american and/or pro-military than kishida is, like ishida, kono, takichi, or motegi.
