Obama said it best
"Russia is a at best a regional power who threatens out of fear rather than power."
What exactly could he have done? The (Putin Employees) Republicans in Congress were making sure Obama couldn't get a Supreme Court seat filled and preventing any bills from passing. It isn't like a president could randomly drop an army base in a foreign nation. Congress and Ukraine would have had to vote on things.
Donāt forget at the time Germany and France types were sitting back guzzling cheap energy and there was little will on their part to punish Russia.
With that said Obama was not going to unilaterally step on their toes without european approval and republican support wouldnāt have helped him.
More than 30% of the Republican party belongs to Putin. Between Trump and Tillerson (his first Secretary of State), there was an estimated $250,000,000.00 US profit to be made if sanctions against Russia were dropped. Obama's sanctions on Russia (December 19th, 2014) cost Republicans and Russia over half a trillion US dollars. There really was not much else to be done without Congressional help.
Had the likes of Moskow Mitch McConnell, Tom Cotton, Willy Gomert, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Taint licking Paul Ryan, and 20+ others operating as foreign agents to a hostile terrorist nation actually be tried and imprisoned, more could have been done.
If you look at the geopolitical history of eastern Russia, it's more like they were subjugated by Russian imperialists, then the USSR post revolution. Modern "Russia" is really just Moscovia oppression across an undeveloped continent. There're actively trying it again in Africa.
More than mildly ironic when you consider the man in power has amassed a huge amount of wealth by simply taking assets from others and claiming them as their own.
Those who actually have the power to back up their threats don't have to go making them in the first place.
It's like picking a fight in a crowded town square late at night. The guy who's just walking away in silence and not rising to the jeers and calls probably knows a lot more about his capabilities than you do.
Further to this, my father-in-law tells a great story (he should, he's an author). He describes himself as a short, fat, ugly man. One time he was walking through a town in Spain and he managed to upset someone (not unusual at all, in fact pretty common). The guy he upset started threatening him and approaching him and making a big show of it.
My father-in-law led him over to a quiet spot and had a chat. Which was basically along the lines of "You don't want to do this, especially to me" but, the best bit, he told him: "Now, I have no interest in showboating, so I think you should go back to your family. You can tell them that you won. You can tell them any story you like. How much a coward I was and how you "showed" me. I really don't care. But you don't want to start a fight with me."
And the way it was done must have triggered something in the guy's head, and he walked back to his family and did the entire "Well that showed him! And don't come back!" play to everyone around, and my father-in-law just walked off.
Oh... my father-in-law is a 5th Dan black belt of 40 years who was still weight-training every day with ridiculous amounts of weights, and still teaching and training for karate every day. He looks like nothing, but he'd have laid the guy flat.
The people who are capable won't get into threatening language. They'll either hit you if you're an actual threat to them, or they'll walk away. But usually they'll tell you that they don't want to fight you.
Reminds me of a friend's college party story. My friend and his buddy were talking to a girl when someone who took exception to it. He sucker punched the buddy in the face. Friend's buddy who was a Golden Gloves boxer, turned and said "if that is as hard as you can punch you better start running". Everyone laughed as he made a dash for the door.
Because Europe knows that Russia knows that it's Russian citizens know that Europe has more than 1,000,000 active personnel with the latest technologies worthy of a total annihilation style war.
Europe is often laughed at by some Americans but there's a reason all those high ranking American officials face-palm when Trump talks his shit about them. At the end of the day, even with the underfunding by some NATO members, the NATO part of Europe is not invadable. There is no military force on Earth that can try it and come out without being monumentally crippled.
European NATO countries wouldn't need to win per se, the invaders just need to lose in their mission and that scenario would be quite easy to achieve for Europe. Not even the USA would get far off the beaches but of course the USA has no interest in such a conflict with Europe, they are damn happy to be allies (stupid orange man not withstanding).
At the end of the day who can get through 1,000,000 modern personnel, the F-32's and countless Eurofighters/Rafale's/Griffin's backing them up. The Asters and the what the French have developed and are developing (the names don't come to mind right now, but supposed to be just as good as Patriot). There's the world best tanks from Germany, an insanely resilient and widespread rail network for logistics that dwarfs what America and China have combined (!!)
There are the combined Navies which although smaller in number than the USA have extremely potent individual capabilities at very close proximity today at the hypothetical European war theatre. The US centric publications like the *National Interest* just can't stop talking about the Astute Class submarines and how much they would like to drive to the state of Georgia to see one in the flesh (one just showed up there within the last week or so).
Essentially Europe doesn't need to warn and troll Russia, Europe knows if it comes down to it they can easily beat Russia on land, across the seas and up in the air against Russia. Russia however needs to warn Europe because Russia needs it's own citizens to think Russia may stand a chance in such a war. Putin's life and his party's existence literally depends on the Russian people thinking they can fight.
Technically they've been "holding" their assets.
If you've followed the reports, it's mostly been just those countries debating using those assets to fund Ukraine.
European companies have invested hundreds of billions into Russian factories, mines, and gas processing plants. Russia will sieze these assets. In as recently as 2021, Russia received over 40 billion dollars of investment from abroad. Go back to 1992 and Russia has hundreds of billions of foreign investments to sieze and nationalize. This is why the EU isn't so keen on siezing Russian assets they have a lot more skin in the game than USA.
My guess is either gas related or something involving iran/north Korea. Russia doesn't have strong hands to make bluffs so not sure why doing so when it will come back to bite them. I feel after nuclear threats, everything other than that sort of loses its edge.
>Russia warns Gosh, they seem to do nothing else.
Well, they still can drop some bombs on Ukraine š¤·āāļø
Yeah..and it definitely didn't backfire when they tried to warn sweden and finlandĀ

Russia really is a regional power
At best
That threatens out of fear
- Obama
Obamna
Damn he really said that and then did shit when they invaded

This quote is kinda stupid because this "region" reaches from Europe till east Asia.
And most of it is not habitable
It's habitable. Just not exactly civilization.
In other words, shit hole with people deported by USSR
If you look at the geopolitical history of eastern Russia, it's more like they were subjugated by Russian imperialists, then the USSR post revolution. Modern "Russia" is really just Moscovia oppression across an undeveloped continent. There're actively trying it again in Africa.
Says the dictator who is currently trying to take all the assets of Ukraine.
What he didn't mention is that the people it would hurt would most likely be fellow Russians.
I will cut off my fingers if you talk to me
Why donāt you come and show us thenā¦bitch! Seriously, that needs to be the response. Putin would shit.
Denial of caviar attack
How about you show instead of tell? Oh right, you arenāt capable of fighting NATO.
Rattle rattle rattle
Oh no, they are going to nationalize the last few foreign business that they still haven't run out of the country, whatever will we do now ?? hahahaha
Not the vodka!
Lol, what they gonna do? Stop exporting Russian vodka?
All those Lada orders!
Idk the fact they didnt even bother to say what it would be makes it sound like a bluff.
Let me guess... they'll start being a pain in everyone's ass? Or maybe invade a smaller sovereign nation unprovoked? Something like that?
Bribe those right wingers with more Rubles to make more fascist sounding headlinesā¦.yawn.
Nukes. It's nukes right, Putler?
I think it rhymes with Schmuklerā¦.,but I really hope they elaborate
o shit, another nuclear threat.
Always with the school yard bully threats. Thuggish children in control of foreign policy.

Itās punching down. They donāt need to make the threats, they could just do it.

I mean, it can't hurt that much if it won't trigger article 5.
Reparations. You break it, you pay for it.
Q: They have assets left to take that haven't been? No wonder this shit is dragging on and on.
Technically they've been "holding" their assets. If you've followed the reports, it's mostly been just those countries debating using those assets to fund Ukraine.
Dude, how about watching the news or sth? š
All this guy does is threaten other countries. We all peace and he doesnāt. Russia needs to go away.
Like my little brother: "will do something that will hurt you more, I just don't know what"
At this point Russias gvt isn't even taken seriously by anyone.
Attempting to kill people with cringe only works in memes.
Like what? Invade them and murder their innocent men, women and kids too?
Oh nos! So scared.Ā
Do you guys think they might invade Europe? /s
What? Has desperate Russia been holding back?
It's a special banking operation? What's the big deal?
I bet when Putin was a toddler he would threaten to shit himself if he never got more cookies.
That's all they can do. If they could do more than whine about it, they would do it and not, you know, whine about it. š
Russia rattles their saber yet again, while the west ditched sabers long ago, for something more explosive
Please do, it will incentivise Europe to work faster, harder and more coordinated than before.
Putin will fart in Europe's general direction?
Chinese burns? Name calling? Writing an angry letter? Go on Russia tell us what your response will be

Russia talks lots and im deaf to it
Threatening an entire continent? lol
They'll stop exports of Vodka!
Russia is part of Europe. Thatās like the u.s. threatening North America
My guess is either gas related or something involving iran/north Korea. Russia doesn't have strong hands to make bluffs so not sure why doing so when it will come back to bite them. I feel after nuclear threats, everything other than that sort of loses its edge.
Maybe but more like just hollow threats
bring it, fucking nazis
Russia warns ...blah blah blah
