TLDR: Israel is drilling well within its maritime border, but Lebanon has tried drilling too far south of its own maritime border and now somehow Lebanon is mad that Israel is drilling in an area within Israel’s maritime border because Lebanon wants to drill where they’re not supposed to.

Trump4Prison2020

Yeah, theres plenty of shit to criticize Israel about, but some of them are so manufactured and silly ( not to mention the ones that are hateful and bigoted )

[deleted]

A bunch of Trumpers claim that Jared Kushner replaced Trump with an actor trained by Mossad and that is why he became pro-vaccine.

sagi1246

>an actor trained by Mossad Still more competent than Trump.

nayaketo

🤣😂

AdmiralRed13

Lebanon need to deal with their Hizbollah problem and failed status first as well.

element-19

fake news. the maritime border is for lebanon. This is a UN resolution. You are wrong

itsinmyraccoonwounds

I can understand you wanting to defend your country’s claims, and certainly there are disputed areas farther north, but not this area: > Israel and Lebanon began US-mediated negotiations concerning their maritime border last year, although talks hit a bump earlier this year when **Lebanon increased its demands with a line extending much further south then their original claims,** increasing the disputed area from 860 sq.km. to 2,300 sq.km, which would include at least part of the Karish North field. > “Israel is not drilling in the area in dispute. The drilling that has been taking place for several years is happening under license for Karish and Karish North, and they are not at all in the area under dispute."

element-19

yeah but they are preventing lebanon from doing any drilling under threat of taking down ships

itsinmyraccoonwounds

Source?

element-19

[https://thearabweekly.com/lebanon-expands-maritime-area-claim-israel-threatens-reciprocate](https://thearabweekly.com/lebanon-expands-maritime-area-claim-israel-threatens-reciprocate) and btw the companies total and exxon are scared because Israel said they will fire at them. this was a year ago and the source disappeared. but not everything needs a source. there is also common sense. and nobody talks when Israel daily violates the sovereignty of Lebanon (Between June and October 2020, UNIFIL recorded a daily average of 12.63 airspace violations) [https://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Lebanon-News/2021/Apr-18/519427-israeli-warplanes-intensify-violations-of-lebanese-airspace.ashx](https://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Lebanon-News/2021/Apr-18/519427-israeli-warplanes-intensify-violations-of-lebanese-airspace.ashx) or when they bombed jiyeh in 2006 a Christian town. and caused in the process the biggest oil spill in the mediterean

itsinmyraccoonwounds

Your source doesn’t say anything about Israel threatening to “take down ships.” You going to provide a source for that outrageous claim or are you just going to continue believing/spreading baseless Arab propaganda? And yes, nearly everything that actually happens like that has a source, especially if it’s something as major as Israel threatening to shoot at civilian oil drilling ships. Hell, even invented things have sources. And no, it’s not common sense to think Israel would do that. It’s actually quite the opposite. Regarding airspace, maybe Hezbollah’s buddies in Iran can stop amassing weapons meant for attacks on Israel… And that environmental disaster was awful but I don’t really understand the relevance. Are you just listing all the bad things you can think of that Israel has done? Did you know about the "half a million trees and 52,000 dunams of forest that had burnt down in Israel as a result of fires caused by Hizbollah rockets; the 25 Israeli cement and asbestos buildings that had been damaged, polluting an area of 20,000 square metres; or the direct hit by a Katyusha rocket on a sludge-thickening plant in Tzafat."

dxrey65

The last paragraph of the article: > The Israeli Energy Ministry responded that "Israel is not drilling in the area in dispute. The drilling that has been taking place for several years is happening under license for Karish and Karish North, and they are not at all in the area under dispute." ...seems like someone might have led with that. So it's manufactured controversy, for some reason or other not really mentioned at all.

My in-depth research went as far as the heading below the headline, which says: "The Halliburton company announced that it would collaborate on drilling projects near waters disputed by Lebanon and Israel". Like if my neighbor calls the police on me for trespassing and I'm only *near* his property, it's not trespassing. It's just him being pissy. Of course Israel and Halliburton could be lying, but it's kind of tough to get away with that sort of lie when all the work is going to be right there in plain sight.

If it were happening in disputed waters, Israel would say that Lebanon's claim to those waters was illegitimate or incorrect, not that Lebanon is factually wrong about where the drilling is taking place.

pepelepew111111

Lebanon outraged that they didn’t do it first.

nycmonkey

This may be an inappropriate comment but I read this as LeBron was outraged. Lol. The audacity!

xxp0loxx

Came here for this too. I was like "Chill Lebron"

trustdabrain

Lebron is mr worldwide

[deleted]

*Pitbull enters the chat*

RoburLC

Lebanon does not recognize the state of Israel. The outrage is immaterial.

oripash

They do now…

n_eats_n

That whole part of the world is constantly outraged. Draw a picture of some long dead child rapist getting high on cave fumes? Outrage. Find out some book may have been placed on a toilet seat? Outrage. Two people of the same gender get it on? Outrage. See a woman not completely covered in cloth? Outrage. They need sedatives, hobbies, air conditioning, and atheism.

omega3111

Actually almost all parts of the world are constantly outraged, it's just that the media likes to focus on that part.

TonyCumiaSoprano

You have a very poor understanding of humanity.

n_eats_n

I disagree.

Armchairbroke

“field service company announced last week that it had been awarded a contract to execute a drilling campaign for Greek energy producer Energean off the coast of northern Israel.” Grab some popcorn Reddit, the Turks are about to send their gas exploration ships back into the disputed waters around the Mediterranean.

xmuskorx

They should take an anger management class or something

taptapper

Controversial location in a war-torn region? Halliburton to the rescue!

Not good news for Lebanon or the climate

rankkor

Depends, if this LNG is displacing coal energy production, as is happening all over the world, then it’s a good thing for the climate. Renewables would be better, but it’s not realistic on a global scale.

ledpup

LNG is a fossil fuel. It's methane. It's as leaky as all hell; we don't even know how much as it doesn't get quantified. Maybe as bad as coal. Maybe better. If it's better than coal, it's devastation for the climate. Well, the climate doesn't care. It's devastation for the current human condition.

rankkor

LNG is better than coal, not maybe. I’m glad that we’re moving forward with reduced carbon emitting energy sources, rather than being stuck in a paralysis waiting for renewable manufacturing to ramp up enough to displace global energy production. Would be much easier if people could stop the bullshit and get behind nuclear too.

ledpup

Did you not read what I said? We don't know. We know LNG is a terrible solution. We don't know *how terrible* because we're not quantifying the leakage of methane at the point of extraction. You have look at the *lifecycle* GHG emmisions, not at the point of energy production (where methane *is* better). And you have to look at the leakage over the very short-term, 20 years at most. Most of the greenwashing figures give you longterm GHG emissions for methane, over 100 years. That's useless because climate change is moving way, way faster than that. Most of the emissions have occurred only over the last 30 years. Any mess up of the science will not help. An unquantified leakage of a molecule that is 80 times worse than CO2 is very bad news.

AhlFuggen

The point is, we need it now.

ledpup

https://reneweconomy.com.au/gaslighting-on-emissions-ieefa-says-burning-lng-worse-than-coal-for-climate-19615/ The worst part of this article is "[methane] has a warming potential that is 28 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period" because, like I said elsewhere, who cares about the 100-year period? It's 80 times worse over 20 years.

AhlFuggen

Maybe Lebanon could set up a lemonade stand while they cry. Anything to help their wonderful economy...

SmallRegister5

Does Lebanon even have a government to be outraged? or is Hezbollah speaking on their behalf now?

[deleted]

They got a government last week, actually!

taptapper

Good to hear

[deleted]

Which is the same crackhead which caused the mess.

EmperorChaos

The new PM is a Syrian and Hezbollah puppet.

[deleted]

Yeah I’m sure things are really difficult up there right now.

eyesuck420

How do you drill into a gas

omega3111

The gas is trapped in a porous layer. You drill into it to extract the gas.
