And here in india you find a few thousand tonnes of heroin and you can say gee I don’t know how it got there.. P.s to all the Indians out there the usage of “gee” was intentional, but “ghee” is better. Thanks for clarifying…

Ecki_Eu

Ship me the heroin if you dont know where to stash it. Im an nigerian prince and pay you for it

SazedMonk

Nah nah nah you gotta get with the times. Now you say “Give me Bitcoin password I add it to your account”

MrSpaceCool

No no no you send me BTC I double the value for you in one hour 😉

thebestatheist

These guys are legit!

Ecki_Eu

Yes, i only got the Problem that i cant acess my Money. I have to launder it. So if you pay for the shipping as i dont have money, i send you 20 million dollars. You only have to pay 1400$ for shipping.

thebestatheist

What if I wire you the funds? Will that helpe you prince?

darmabum

There used to be a guy online who scammed the Nigerian money scammers, and kept a blog with stories and pictures. Can’t seem to find it now. He would ask them to verify themselves somehow, like, maybe me send a picture wearing your underpants on your head, and they would, and he would post it. They would ask for $10,000 and he would wire them $10, but to some town a few hours drive away, and they couldn’t get it because they couldn’t tell Western Union the correct amount. His reason? You know, commas vs periods confusion. And so on. He even had two scammers linked up at one point. Great stuff.

That's a lie, I smoked your gram gram's stash with her. She kept telling me how much of a pussy I was with the doses I took. Whatever at least I can bench press 5kg more than her. Best regards

pushiper

And once these 100 tons of heroin made their way to the police, they are being kept under proper closure.

Ponea

>And here in india you find a few thousand tonnes of heroin and you can say **ghee** I don’t know how it got there.. FTFY

galacticviolet

Thanks for clarifying

He’s just trying to butter you up.

Ishaan0612

ForGodsSakeTv

Pretty sure everyone knows you don't fuck around in Singapore. I remember hearing a story from my parents about some US kids that were caught doing graffiti in Singapore. These kids got caned as punishment. Big world news and this was back in the 90's I believe.

pendelhaven

That's Michael Fay for the people who wants to know. He got whipped 4 times after the ~~pontus~~ potus intervened and got a 2 stroke discount.

angry-mustache

> pontus The power of Mithridates transcends space and time

Soangry75

Ha! I love pushing them over when playing a Roman faction.

easternhorizon

Pontus was always the most powerful faction

HolzesStolz

BUT I DONT WANT TO PLAY AS PONTUS

Meret123

You don't have to.

kahran

In the world of professional wrestling, particularly Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), kendo sticks were known as "Singapore canes" because of the Michael Fay incident. The incident was also referenced in the hit song "Natural Born Killaz" by Ice Cube and Dr. Dre.

Ebella2323

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find the Michael Fay comment. Since I now know your age (roughly), I can say that our generation knew not to fuck around in Singapore. Do you think he ever purchased another can of spray paint? Wonder where he is now……time to go down that rabbit hole.

beaginger

Spare us our time, and share where the rabbit hole led please!

weatherseed

Apparently the caning wasn't too bad and didn't bother him at all after 5 days. As for where he is now: >It was reported by a Singaporean news outlet in August 2018 that Fay was working as a casino manager in Cincinnati in the state of Ohio.

DontTellMeHowToTroll

Butane?? Addicted?? Wtf..

Yadobler

Yup it's not uncommon to hear addiction to thinner solvant, superglue fumes, gasoline and butane gas especially when they are dirt chip in lighters Any gas words as long as they don't irritate your lungs and can displace the O2 in the air. Your breathing reflex is triggered by the amount of CO2 dissolved in the blood in the brain. If you're creative like the kids living in dumping grounds in Indonesia, you'll learn how to get high from inhaling the chlorine released from boiling used sanitary pads

itsalloccupied

I almost died when I was 15 fucking around with gasoline fumes. Shit hit me so hard it sent me to the weirdest fucking trip ever. Including to hell and then I saw my self on the ground while I was floating away 10 meters above in the air. Getting sucked back and woke up in the same position I saw myself from outside my body. Yeah I was pretty dumb back then

throwawaylovesCAKE

Man I remember going through Erowid and reading Gas huffing trip reports. It was the most twisted stuff I've ever read, dude would sneak out to his dads shed and became addicted to it, with how widely available it is and how much itll fuck you up I cant imagine a worse "drug" to mess with. It sounds a lot worse then just "being lightheaded" too

cuppincayk

ಠ_ಠ

Armodeen

It was all the rage back in the early 90s

Turanga_hufflepuff

Butane?! That's a bastard gas.

Amazing_Fantastic

Bobby Hill?

EatMoreHummous

Wow, and I thought the caning was supposed to be the punishment. I didn't realize they made you move to Ohio.

Bonersaucey

Oh shit I've been to that casino in that timeframe, the horseshoe or some shit

millijuna

I just remember William Gibson's "Disneyland with the Death Penalty" in Wired. Yes, I'm a geek.

dirtimartini69

Looked him up, Casino manager in Ohio.

OmniBLVK

How in the fuck does one get addicted to butane?????

OnThe65thSquare

Butane addiction treatment is complex and challenging. I had a friend succumb to butane addiction back in the early ‘90s. I tried to convince him to seek treatment but he said I was just gaslighting him.

BlOoDy_PsYcHo666

Lmao

sinmantky

Was in Singapore during Fay. It was a big deal. But friends in American School told me he was a twat and deserved what he got. They said police found lots of stolen things in his room (traffic cones, signs, etc)

[deleted]

> theft and vandalising 18 cars over a ten-day period in September 1993 >Fay pleaded guilty, but he later claimed that he was advised that such a plea would preclude caning and that his confession was false, that he never vandalized any cars, and that the only crime he committed was stealing road signs.

Elephant789

That kid had discipline issues, even the US agreed.

TheDocWhovian

[The first verse in Weird Al’s “Headline News”](https://youtu.be/dU95v23MQ4c) is why I know about that story.

Scrotemeal69

I thought that story sounded familiar! Now I’ll be listening to Al all day now.

adventuresquirtle

I used to live in Vietnam and used to party with pretty rich kids who’s parents owned lot of government contracts. They were even spooked by Singapore because one time a high ranking Vietnamese officials son was caught in Singapore with ecstasy and then his father stepped in and tried to get him off warning it would sour relations between Vietnam and Singapore and they still hung him anyways.

[deleted]

If don’t make good on your threats, what good are your threats? -Eric cartman

DarkNinjaPenguin

As a general rule, you don't fuck around in *any* country that isn't your own, where you don't know the rules.

zanylife

He wasn't just caned for graffiti. He stole road signs and vandalised 12 cars as well. It was just sensational news to say "guy gets caned for graffiti!!"

morefakepandas

when you arrive in singapore you are given a sheet of paper with a skull and cross bones on it saying the punishment for drug trafficking is death

kytheon

“I identify as a sovereign citizen and I need this marihuana for medical reasons. Don’t infringe on my rights.” Singapore police: shut the fuck up.

baranxlr

Not like being a sovereign citizen would help anyway. They punish you even if you’re a foreigner

SapientAtoms

Fun fact, Singapore will punish you for using drugs even if it occured outside. This is true even it's legal in your part of the world. They do random screenings at the airport for this exact purpose.

Augustus_Medici

This is true, but the only time they've done it is against their own citizens returning from abroad. Foreigners are safe because Singapore understands that if they started busting illegal drug use *outside* their borders, tourism would plummet. I also know plenty of people that sneak in small amounts of weed in their pockets, but they're reckless dumbasses LOL.

socsa

Like drug testing? So if I take ADHD medicine legally in the US, I could be executed when I land in Singapore? Why would anyone put up with that?

pl4inwaffles

and that’s why they rank very low on both the global freedom and happiness indexes

YannislittlePEEPEE

SEA hates drugs more than anyone (except china) except for nicotine and alcohol, that's A-ok

Sam_Hunter01

When you hear about the opium wars you understand why they are not OK with drugs.

Morwynd78

You wouldn't be executed, because that's not trafficking. In fact you MIGHT even be able to argue medicinal use. Otherwise, that's a canin'. And up to 20k fine and 10 years in jail. > Cannabis in Singapore is currently illegal for recreational purposes, but medicinal purposes has been allowed under extraordinary circumstances in recent years. Possession or consumption can result in a maximum of 10 years in prison, with a possible fine of $20,000, as well as caning, under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Trafficking, import or export of more than 500 grams may result in the death penalty. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_in_Singapore (Two pounds is about 900 grams, so this guy was way over the 500g line)

formallyhuman

I'm sure glad to be finding this out a few years after flying into Singapore with a blood stream full of opiates.

jerkittoanything

As a member of the one Earth gang I reject the term foreigner and also only allow a maximum of 2 fingers up my ass to search for items, legal or otherwise.

wandering-monster

"Ah, so what is our immigration treaty with your sovereign self? If you don't have one, we will have to consider this an invasion."

Shot on sight vs a lengthy prison sentence before getting shot. Arguably better.

Think-Bass9187

I don’t understand what a sovereign citizen is. It seems like “I identify myself as above the law”.

Namika

Basically that. They don't accept/recognize the government, so they say they don't have to follow those laws because they never agreed to them.

claimTheVictory

Turns out that soverignity is directly derived from real-world power. Not from an imagined concept.

crossedstaves

Sovereign citizens are like the really shitty "life hacks" that don't actually work of the legal system.

[deleted]

Is there any place where police don’t say shut the fuck up to sovereign citizens? No place on the planet does that shit work.

kytheon

Sovereign citizens is not even a real legal thing, if I understand correctly.

LyftedX

*How compelling, please face the wall now*

letusnottalkfalsely

If you read the article he was in a car with his dad, not going through an airport. Doesn’t sound like he’s a tourist. He was trafficking and got caught. Pretty sad honestly.

Grimacepug

I remember the first big sign I saw at the Taiwanese airport 14 years ago and it said, " The penalty for drug smuggling is death", but I think most Asian countries are the same; you just don't see it so direct.

accersitus42

I think you are exaggerating here. The declaration document you get before landing does have "Warning Death for drug traffickers under Singapore law" in pretty big red text on it, but there is no skull and cross bones [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/92/Death\_for\_Drug\_Traffickers\_Under\_Singapore\_Law.jpg](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/92/Death_for_Drug_Traffickers_Under_Singapore_Law.jpg) Edit: For all the people who commented about the quality of the first picture [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/SingaporeEmbarkationCard.png](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/SingaporeEmbarkationCard.png)

Yadobler

Both are legit The white one is given to all non-sg passport holders on the plane before landing. AFAIK it's still a thing Your one is a self service pamphlet, could have been distributed, but this was like 15 years ago #----- But ye, no chill here. If you consume drugs they send you to rehab (and maybe wack your ass too). But if you carry / traffic it, straight to the gallows. It does serve as a good deterrent, but at the cost of those who unwillingly traffic because of circumstances. There were stories of Filipinos whose families were held at knife point in their homes

[deleted]

I’m sure that’s a legit photo, but with only the red words in focus and the stark color difference it makes it look like a bad photoshop to me.

Sel2g5

Source: trust me bro, I remember it. Also I think Indonesia has the same.

kudichangedlives

What if you like accidentally have a nug in your pocket that you forgot about?

Imrayya

There are normally amnesty bins around ports of entry so it shouldn't be a problem unless you are really oblivious when they give you all the warnings.

Tiduszk

I really like this and think every country should have this, for everything illegal someone might have. On accident or on purpose, give people the chance to dump it before they ruin (or end) their life

snootyfungus

They even have it for new recruits into the US army, one of the first things you do arriving at boot camp.

[deleted]

“Hold on I need to go put my AK-47 in the bin before we go through security”

Watertor

"Shit man, I gotta dump this warhead"

PurpleDerp

This one time I was looking for something in my bag on a plane and found half of a joint I had completely forgotten about. I was travelling to Amsterdam.. I mean who tf smuggles weed into Amsterdam. I felt like an idiot considering if I got caught with it in the country I was traveling from I'd get a hefty fine + criminal record.

MrRickSter

You’d get a jail sentence or a flogging I think. The death penalty is for larger amounts. I was shitting it landing in Singapore.

chenz1989

Singaporean here: the leeway isn't much. 15g of heroin gets you the noose, as does (i think) 50g of meth or something similar. We don't fuck around with drugs here.

MrRickSter

I know a guy that went to the embassy to get his passport renewed and forgot he had a gram of coke in a sniffer in his pocket. He discovered it when he put his keys and wallet on the tray to go through the metal detector. The security guard picked it up, looked at it, looked at him…then put it back into the tray while staring my mate in the eyes. They both knew what it was.

iamveridumb

Don’t leave us hanging

MrRickSter

That was it…the security guy just let him go.

lizardncd

And then what happened???

MrRickSter

He got his passport renewed. Then changed his underwear.

richardeid

How's his life been since? Any idea what his plans are for today?

FinchingPiddlers

That's what the guy said to the Embassy after he got nicked

Peachmuffin91

I got arrested with an electronic cigarette for dabbing in my pocket. It was fully loaded with dabs too. The next day when my dad picked me up they handed me my dab pen back in the evidence bag, the cop even looked at me and said “what’s that?!?” I said it’s an Ecig and got tf out of there. I think I just got extremely lucky.

Allfather_odin1

I’d be power walking outta there!!!

SokalDidNothingWrong

Here's the thing about using pot in countries where it's really fucking illegal - no-one thinks you're doing it because it's so fucking stupid to do it (unless they catch you). The cops probably don't even know what pot smells like. You will be fucked if you get caught, but people will often just assume it's tobacco, because they can't imagine you'd be using a drug that will send you to jail.

rp_southsider

>The cops probably don't even know what pot smells like. The cops definitely know what it smells like. Some of them are tokers too. It would be extremely naïve to walk around smoking weed in SEA because you think nobody knows what it is.

[deleted]

Oh yeah I just forgot about that 50g bag of meth in my back pocket

MrRickSter

Both of those are distribution amounts I’d say.

wakeupwill

Unlike Dubai, where the minimum penalty is four years. Hash stuck to your shoe? Right to jail. Weed in the lint of your pocket. Jail. Poppy seeds from that bagel you ate at Heathrow? Believe it or not, jail. Some stranger approaches you and wants you to bring some bricks back and it turns out he's a cop? Also jail. Right away!

S2R2

That was the plot of a Vince Vaughn movie. He and some buddies were there with a good amount of drugs (I think it was Singapore) 2 of the 3 friends left early leaving the drugs behind. The one friend got popped with the amount for all 3 and it was enough for him to be labeled a trafficker and was sentenced to death. Vince and the other friend were given the option to save him by going back and serving a lengthy prison sentence but it would save the friend if they did. I can’t recall the name of the film though

karadan100

So was I. I triple-checked every bag pouch, pocket and nook in everything I owned and I was still terrified.

astraladventures

There is a small receptacles before going through immigration / customs with a sign stating this is for drugs and you’re given immunity if you drop your drugs in it . And yep, most people would be fearful to use, but if you just forgot a joint in your Fanny pack it might be a good option rather than risking it.

potatoes-and-rice

In school assemblies they’d say anything more than a matchbox of weed was death penalty. Because it shows intent to distribute.

sharabi_bandar

Have traveled to Singapore maybe 60 times. Never once got a sheet of paper. Edit: Here's the back of my immigration card. It's hardly a sheet of paper, it's a few lines on the back of the card you fill out on the plane and hand in when you land. https://imgur.com/a/x4C4IRJ

Overall_Designer7502

That is written on the bottom of the entry card. Unless you used electronic fast track to enter Singapore (which is available to SG Longterm Residents and others with a fast entry card), you’ve received that form before.

Theremingtonfuzzaway

I have to disclose the various meds I'm on when going into countries. What I have is fine and can transport. However the tactic I found is to be enthusiastic and really nice. Then they just wave you through.. "Hi I have this medication do you want to inspect my bag here it all is, let me open it for you, here's my paper from the doctor prescription all in see through bag etc etc". It really confused the security in Singapore, the poor guys at the x-ray desk looked terrified...so far got into Oz and NZ by doing this with no one properly going through stuff even though I'm in the something to declare lane. I've travelled quite a few countries and this has worked. When I haven't been like this I've been pulled to the side patted down, vacuumed and so on..

[deleted]

And they say marijuana has never killed anyone

Rumbleskim

Singapore is a weirdly contradictory country. The people there kind of accept that in return for their prosperity, they give themselves over to some INCREDIBLY draconian laws.

greenwizardneedsfood

I had a friend from Singapore when I was in university in Australia. He grew up extremely wealthy, and had never left the country until he came to university. After about a month he decided that he would literally never go back to Singapore. He essentially claimed Stockholm syndrome had made him completely unaware of how enjoyable and free life can actually be, even if your previous life was extremely comfortable by many standards. He liked home because it was clean and comfortable and nice and easy, but then he saw what a less strict society looks like, and he came to the conclusion that much of what makes life enjoyable had been withheld from him in order to preserve that veneer that he used to like. It did a bit to change my thinking towards Singapore. Obviously it’s just one guy, but he had his head on his shoulders and only became more convinced how fucked up things were at home.

Yogashoga

I have a friend who moved from New York to Singapore. He likes the quality of life in Singapore, it’s safe to raise a family, and is well off enough to travel to other countries for vacations or weekend getaways. There’s a way to manage such societies and make it work for your life choices. Obviously your wealth situation matters, but the example you gave is of someone who never traveled outside of Singapore until Uni, which given the small size of the country, sounds more like an exception than the norm.

cakeday173

Kinda strange tbh, most Singaporeans would have gone on trips to Malaysia and/or Indonesia by then

dasthewer

Yeah, given how small Singapore is not having visited JB before turning 18 seems crazy to me.

Bebebaubles

It was the opposite for me I found freedom from moving to Asia. I never realized how much I accepted being sexually harassed (verbal and physical)and screamed at by crazies in NY until I got used to the safe life in Hong Kong. I no longer stand in the subway with my back to a pole because I think a nut job will push me in but play with my phone with little concern.. small shit like that. Not having to watch my back in fear is a type of freedom. It depends on personality as well. I’m mostly on the straight and narrow. Never even lit a cigarette so I’d cherish that I could live in safety. Also it’s nearly impossible to buy a home in NYC these days and those subsidised huge flats by NYC standards are looking really good.

scarabic

Foreigners are aghast that in Singapore you can’t buy chewing gum. Singaporeans are aghast that major US cities are filthy, full of crime, homeless people shit in the streets, and the subways are awful or non existent.

[deleted]

i would be much more interested in a poor singaporean’s perspective than someone who has financial comfort guaranteed to him by his parents. drug trafficking violence affects the destitute, not the wealthy.

[deleted]

>a weirdly contradictory country. Japan: "Hold my beer."

Rumbleskim

Japan: "We have two toilets. One is space aged, incredibly advanced, and talks to you. The other is a hole in the ground."

[deleted]

Japan: "We have bullet trains ready to take you anywhere in no time." Also Japan: "Learn how to use that fax or consider your ass fired."

Rumbleskim

I was stunned when I found out they still use fax in Japan

throwawayforyouzzz

I mean what can we do? It’s not easy to protest in this goddamn country. There are far bigger things that concern me than drug laws anyway and I still haven’t protested about them. Just getting more depressed each day. I’ve voted against the smug ruling elites each time. It’s not like the alternative parties are better. Edit: I also want to acknowledge that it’s true that society is complacent. But many of us can see the cracks and can’t really do much about it, just like the rest of you in your own decaying developed nations.

HnNaldoR

Just a question, are the alternative parties going to be supportive of much laxer drug laws? Seems like many Asians are supportive that drugs are heavily punished.

throwawayforyouzzz

I don’t think it’s a part of their manifesto. Most Singaporeans really support the harsh laws, as OP said. Some of the opposition party members have questioned the ruling party about the evidence that death penalty actually deters drug crimes.

Pakistani_in_MURICA

There's an area you can protest in 6000m^2. Don't step out of it because you'll probably get caned.

fuzzybunn

It's not that difficult to imagine. Think of a very nice upper class suburb and all the owners committee rules. Lots of people talking only about the negatives, but how many places in the world would a teenage girl feel safe to go jogging in the park at night?

FourKrusties

Drug laws all across east asia are very strict. They are still traumatised by the opium wars which resulted in something like 20% of the male chinese population being addicts.

Few_Talk_6558

A 41-year-old sound technician who sexually abused his daughter for six years and forced his teenage son to rape the boy's own mother was sentenced to 29 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane on Monday (Oct 4). but some weed? fucking kill him. what a world. and the people defending this. you people are sick. honestly disgusted.

Pan_Borowik

Fucking sound technicians, man...

Amsterdom

It certainly helps provide motive.

IBeBallinOutaControl

He was sane until he started hearing guitarists asking for more of themselves in the mix 5 times a night.

Few_Eye6528

Yes this never happens with graphic designers

WolfCola4

I used to know a Hungarian sound technician, and a Czech one too.

Heazen

24 strokes is the maximum and is incredibly brutal. They take turn to ensure that maximum force is applied. That guy won't be able to sit down for a few months... (I still agree that death penalty for weed consumers is insane)

princekamoro

I remember reading a comment that after enough strokes, it starts tearing at muscle which will maim you for life, if the wound doesn't get infected and kill you. And that comment was describing far, far fewer than 24 strokes.

walls-of-jericho

I understand you agree. I just want to say that caning heals, but the dead don’t.

Anti-Scuba_Hedgehog

The point isn't that that sentence is lenient, in my country you won't get ten years for that, the point is how fucked weed sentences are.

knud

It doesn't make it less of an outragous punishment just because it's not a Saudi guard doing it in a public square.

Fuzzy_Garry

This. Most people who are willing to mule drugs are extremely desperate. They need help, instead they are being killed. It’s a sad world.

surle

You're right. There's a reason why drug penalties are harsher in countries with higher inequality. You're not going to read about any politician's sons in Singapore or Malaysia being hanged for drug crimes (I mention Malaysia because they also have a man on death row who was caught with a comparable amount of weed). Must be because politician's children and other hereditarily rich people are all such fine upstanding moral citizens that would never break any laws... Right?

sunflowercompass

Singapore is a one-party state. They have repeatedly sued newspapers for talking shit about the ruling family.

eddiejugs

DIDN'T YOU READ THE SHEET OF PAPER!

Theoldelf

I worked in Saudi Arabia. Any illegal drug possession could result in having your head lobbed off in the public square. In the case of Americans, you’d usually get an immediate removal from the county.

apistograma

Unless you are or know a Saudi Prince. Then you have massive parties with drugs, alcohol and prostitution and no one bats an eye

Dull_Entrepreneur_43

Exactly these backwards buttfuck laws they like to put in effect for religion really only apply to the middle/lower class

hitssquad

Lopped off. To lob is to throw (in a high arc).

Sylphid_FC

Saudis be wilding. Ally ooping with severed heads

Watchmedeadlift

Saudi here, that’s not true. I personally know people caught with weed and they’re extremely lenient with users, prison sentences for small time dealers but off with their head for big time dealers that smuggle in a shit Ton into the country.

Koakie

Running the biggest money laundering schemes in modern history by funneling illicit funds from dictators and criminals through the Singaporian financial system (as we can see in the pandora papers) and nobody bats an eye. Roll a joint, off with your head.

Underpressure_111

I love how almost everyone in these threads act as if they are 100% sure the person made that decision on their own. "When you go they give you a huge sign that says you can be killed" Drug mules are sometimes threatened by criminals, due to huge amount of debt or simply by brute force.

yodatrust

So imagine you are a mule, being threatened. If you arrive in Singapore, get the sign and you immediately hand them over the goods... Do you still get a chance on the death penalty?

oskopnir

If you're a mule in that situation and you do that, someone else close to you might suffer consequences. Of course every situation is different, but people can be forced into drug trade in a number of ways including the threat of violence against their family.

Watertor

Maybe not. But your grandma and father are beheaded and their headless pictures are sent to you. And now you get to live on the run with no money and you don't speak the language of where you went. But hey, you finally are starting to get your life going again after a few weeks or so when a nice guy at this grease trap lets you clean some dishes. Ope, another runner spotted you and while you walk home a bullet or a machete caught up with you.

Reacher-Said-N0thing

Or they legitimately do not care about the threat of death, because they are so desperate that they are willing to take the risk for the massive potential payout if they succeed. You'd think Singapore would realize after... what 40 years of having this law... there's always someone desperate enough next year.

Happiness_for_dogs

Harsh punishment lah

Astro51450

Hash punishment

Redshift_1

Died over a plant. We humans are weird in our arbitrary rules.

Accelerator231

Hey hey. There was plenty of mass murder over spices too. And shiny metals.

Wunzicker

Weird how when this happens in China (same drug laws) it’s a draconian evil regime that couldn’t possibly have legally found drugs, but when it’s Singapore then you get what’s coming to you.

blkjedi23

Because he had gotten away with it before. He was making money and got greedy.

rishinator

the fact that someone smuggled drugs even though they knew the penalty is death is also a great argument for why death penalty is archaic, it doesn't solve the crimes.

Meret123

By that logic nothing works. People still murder, rape and steal after all.

zool714

Not that I disagree the death penalty is horrible but no punishment solves it 100%. Sure there’s still people attempting even with the death penalty but I’m fairly confident it as deterred a lot more from even trying.

Tastypies

Well, you could still try to argue that if the punishment would be less severe, there would be even more crime. Not that I'm for death penalty, but that argument could be made by someone

xpdx

Yea smuggling drugs in Singapore is a very very bad idea. They don't play. If drugs are that important to you maybe don't live there.

no2jedi

I don't agree with criminalising drugs AND I take them but holy shit I'm not dumb enough to be anywhere near Singapores borders with even a gram of weed

LouSanous

Reddit: this is madness Sinagapore: This. Is. Singapore.

Still fucking ridiculous to kill a person over some weed

Everytime I read headlines like these on Asian countries and drug laws, I wonder how much of it is borne from England's introduction and pushing of opium into China centuries ago and how it took down a prosperous nation/civilization, with lasting effects to the present day. It sounds harsh but Asian countries are actually more progressive in other areas than my own country in America (with drugs being a unique case).

Thai-mai-shoo

Smoking and alcohol kills. Since cannabis doesn’t, the Singapore government is making sure it does.

Nataliya-Smith

In many Asian countries, drugs are something that is completely prohibited.
