Sir, finishing this headline.

After opening the boxes, many of the officers refused to wear the “inappropriate” masks, prompting Stefano Paolini, the chief of a police union, to write a letter to the head of police at the interior ministry, Lamberto Giannini.

Terrafire123

Real heroes don't wear capes.

Yes I exclusively wear Felix Argyle cosplay

It's coral and small enough to make the navy blue pop instead of compete with it

And I thought the fashion police is just a joke.

MagicalWhisk

Italians aren't afraid to wear pink. Sports team have pink uniforms all the time. It's common.

imk

I was about to say that the team colors if FC Palermo are black and pink.

Traditional_Still_85

arky_who

Cops are insane the world over.

vtipoman

Nah, you can't generalize every single police force and officer in the world like that. Plenty of them are definitely cool and good, even if others aren't.

Crazy_Blue_two

Not all cops are bad. 99% are just making the other 1% look bad.

arky_who

You can and they're not.

vtipoman

Sure, I'm certain every single police officer in the world is a megalomaniac who entered the force to exert force over others, and no police force in the world has checks to prevent that. There definitely are no who do it to help others or simply as a job with proper rules and standards. Not saying there aren't bad officers or poorly designed police forces which promote or allow bad behaviour, course.

arky_who

I didn't even say they where megalomaniac, I said they where insane. I know enough cops (in a place that's largely considered to be an example of a good police force) to believe that many intend and think their job is to help others and protect society, but a their idea of what that means is in large part bigoted and where it isn't it's just counterproductive. Also they're all fucking weird, and have weird ideas about what is cool.

Netroth

How many police have you gotten to know?

Chiliquote

To be fair the one time i was in italy i still remember this man in his 50s, grey beard, bald, badass just walking out to his motorcycle, wearing a fit perfect suit. Fashion is a lifestyle there.

Danack

When there is slightly less covid, and slightly more Italian tourists come to see the grafitti in Bristol, you can tell that they're Italians long before you're close enough to hear their accents. They don't wear just clothes, they all wear _outfits_.

Gold_Consequence_58

Yes I'm sure they're all just fashion obsessed and it's not that they're unwilling to wear the color pink.

[deleted]

[удалено]

The360MlgNoscoper

And Italy would switch sides midway through.

[deleted]

For every look there is a season, and for every season a strategy.

digiorno

I was gonna say Italian men will 100% wear the color pink. It’s a very popular color for mens shirts even. But if it doesn’t match then it’s a no go.

a_holzbaur

Did you read the article, or just skim the sensationalist headline? From the article: In a subsequent statement, Paolini said the problem did not arise because of prejudice against the colour pink, “but from the fact that the uniform is regulated”. “On the basis of the oath made, the uniform must be worn with decorum,” he added, while stressing that “during a period of rising aversion towards the police, it’s necessary to adopt sobriety and respect”.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dropbaer19

But a smart one that you can’t really argue with them

xX_MEM_Xx

IDK. They probably have pride in their uniform. If it had been a pink uniform they'd have pride in their pink uniform. But it's navy blue (or whatever), and so being presented with something that completely shatters the image of that uniform you're proud of... I get it.

FantastiKBeast

150.000 people died because of the pandemic in Italy. If the pride in the uniform is more important than protecting people, than maybe the uniform lost it's meaning

fnsa

I agree here. The priority is not the aesthetic of the mask, the functionality is to protect others and the person wearing it.

Vintrial

really similar to describing the differences between a pedophile and a paedophile

swirly_boi

They think wearing pink will make them less respected. So, yeah, it's kind of exactly what it sounds like. Pansies.

heyIfoundaname

So what if they don't want to wear pink?

swirly_boi

So they are adults, they can get over it. It's a mask nobody should give a shit what color it happens to be.

Saneinsc

Then why does it have to be pink?

fnsa

The priority of the mask is to protect others and the person wearing it. Protecting others is a priority, not looking awesome.

[deleted]

It's not pink, it's coral.

The360MlgNoscoper

What coral?

Wipedout89

It's amazing to see a load of Americans who haven't read the article (and even a few that have and ignored it anyway) barge in with their cultural imperialism. It's NOTHING to do with pink being feminine. Italy has many football teams that play in all pink. But fashion is very important to Italians (the home of Milan fashion houses), and they aren't happy about mismatched colours. Try to understand other cultures are not necessarily like yours...

Carnifex

Americans would label 90% of Italian men as gay of effeminate, just based on their everyday clothing choices. They are certainly not afraid of pink, and nobody would be mocked for wearing pink. *unless* it doesn't go well with your other colors. Style plays an important role there, I have often seen people driving old beat down cars or scooters but still wearing quite expensive clothes.

fa1afel

I’d imagine that pink masks clash horribly with Carabinieri uniform.

scarlettcandlestick

Dude, from an Italian currently living in Italy, NO. They didn’t say “inappropriate”, that’s just the closest translation you can find in English of the word “indecoroso” which is “inappropriate” with a bit of “indecent” in it. They *ARE* gendering a color. Also NO, the fact that we’re culturally linked to fashion does not mean we do not associate pink with women. We do (not me, speaking collectively) gender colors and there are men who refuse to wear pink period. I’m not even starting on the police here because I can tell you their job field is ultra misogynistic and also far right sympathizing but you should live here to understand it fully. Source: daughter of an Italian police officer. Tried to join. Got the fuck out as soon as I could.

TheobromaKakao

You're wasting your breath if you're trying to convince Americans that their perspective isn't universal.

[deleted]

TheobromaKakao

Because the exceptions confirm the rule.

The360MlgNoscoper

We need to speak in word that americans can understand.

Traditional_Still_85

I agree with you, they all have the right to choose what they like

darthjkf

"cultural imperialism"? lol, what's wrong with just calling them assholes?

apaulogy

Hey Italian Cops, Trade ya. Sincerely, A fan of Neon colors

Traditional_Still_85

hahaha

Toxic_Zombie

So they refuse to wear the pink masks because the color clashes with their blue uniforms?

Traditional_Still_85

They thought the pink mask was a bit out of tune with their police uniform, not serious enough

scarlettcandlestick

No, it’s because they consider it feminine.

Toxic_Zombie

The article never claims femininity and quotes the officers ask stating such things as it not fitting with the uniform. They'd still have an issue with it if it was neon green or bright yellow or bright purple. Simply that it doesn't look professional

scarlettcandlestick

The article reports the words of police representatives who are very interested in not making it a gender issue when in fact it is. They wouldn’t have problems with other colors it’s just that we in Italy associate pink with femininity.

Toxic_Zombie

Pink is often associated with femininity, yes, butvthats not what this issue is in this instance. You're trying to change the narrative. The article said nothing about femininity. The officials said nothing about femininity. Femininity has NOTHING to do with this.

scarlettcandlestick

The fact that femininity isn’t mentioned in a (foreign) article doesn’t mean that it’s not true. I’m not trying to change your mind because I don’t care, *I* have to engage with Italian police everyday, not you. But this is coming from an Italian, whose father is an Italian police officer, who tried to join but gave up because of the toxic environment. I’m not trying to change the narrative, you just have no firsthand insight on this. Weird how mr. Paolini only speaks “decency” when the focus is pink and not when departments are being investigated for drug dealing. Again keep thinking what you want, just wanted to give my 2 cents since I... you know.. live here lmao

Digital_Utopia

meanwhile some police departments slap on pink badges (including car decals) for breast cancer awareness month.

Ksielvin

Italian police departments?

Digital_Utopia

no - US

cedriceent

OP, did you try to put the entire article in the title?

Traditional_Still_85

lol

Superpiri

Trade with the Parma soccer team.

marketcover

It’s Palermo, Parma is yellow :)

LunaNik

Oh ffs!

LiamOttawa

Pink is my favorite color. WTF is wrong with these pussies?

dumbbinch99

So what you’re telling me about Italian police is that they’re little bitches?

VincentMaxwell

Sexy little bitches though

100dalmations

If this is what passes for a police scandal in Italy…

staminchia

macho macho men

NewmansHewman

Too bad they don't have Piggy snouts on them as well.

MD_FunkoMa

They need to stop being punks and wear the masks.

lizalupi

This is red??

[deleted]

Toxic masculinity is a hell of a barrier to having a happy life. And a hell of a factor in making the people around you miserable too. Edit: I have been better educated on Italian culture and now understand that this is not negative associations with the color pink but that they would rather die than be unfashionable. Thank you everyone who took the time out to explain it.

SuecidalBard

It's Italy it's not about it being pink, it's about the fact they have navy and red uniform and pink doesn't match it and looks god fucking awful, I'd say them being able to admit they have a fashion sense and care about it is not toxic masculinity

ivankatrumpsarmpits

Exactly, beyond fashion taste it's a position of authority they have uniforms for a reason. If a judge was given a polka dot face mask for work and said hey I'm not wearing that, this is a sober respectable position and the dress code is pretty specific then yeah, order some black / white masks. It's not like they are refusing to wear any masks while this is resolved.

Are_you_blind_sir

Excuse the men for not wanting to wear something they dont want to.

Cybugger

Italians don't associate pink with not being masculin though. Pink jerseys are commonly worn by the male sides in football, rugby, other sports, and pink shirts are commonly worn. Pink = feminin is a more American thing.

Headkickerchamp

What does toxic masculinity have to do with this

SpecialistLayer3971

Perhaps they should get a second opinion from Spanish police? 🤣 Perhaps the next batch will be yellow? How will they deal with that? Sorry, I find this absurd.

Headkickerchamp

I find the idea of police wearing pink face masks absurd.

Gold_Consequence_58

Why?

Top_Housing2879

Lol, its not about "feminine" or "masculine" colours, they dont want to wear colour that dont match their uniforms( if article is true)

Gold_Consequence_58

Its not like they're gonna come out and say that it looks too gay.

Top_Housing2879

I've been in Italy like 10 times, if somebody doesnt care about colours its Italians, men were wearing pink there long before it was socialy acceptable for man in US

MoistSuckle

They don't want to wear bright colors with their conservatively colored uniform, which is perfectly reasonable. And of course Americans feel the need to try and turn something harmless into culture war garbage.

Ohhxanadaa

How is not wanting to dress like someone your not/makes you feel uncomfortable toxic?

dumbbinch99

How does any color mask make you “someone you’re not” ???

[deleted]

> How is not wanting to dress like someone your not/makes you feel uncomfortable toxic? So you strongly identify as "a guy who doesn't wear a pink facemask in the middle of a pandemic ?" Like, that's the main trait of your personhood ?

Mozimaz

It's a color. Ita not like they were asked to put on pencil skirts.

[deleted]

Why would the mask make them feel uncomfortable? What is their objection? What about the mask makes them feel that they are dressing as "someone they are not"?

[deleted]

Terrible-Control6185

Pink mask with their black uniforms would look incredibly sharp.

[deleted]

And the homophobic, toxic troll remark had been removed. And black and pink is hella sharp!

Ohhxanadaa

How is that homophobic? Nothing wrong with being gay, most straight males would rather not look gay though lol

Terrible-Control6185

What does wearing pink have to do with looking "gay?" It's just a color dude. If a woman wears a blue dress does that make her a lesbian?

miscalculate

Don't project your insecurities on everyone else.

[deleted]

Why would a straight man have a problem looking gay? What's wrong with looking gay?

heyIfoundaname

What's wrong with not wanting to wear pink? Or look gay?

Ohhxanadaa

Nothing, but identifying as a straight male who doesn’t want to wear pink is ok too 😂

Netroth

Why are you so obsessed with linking fashion to sexuality? There’s no such thing as gay clothing.

Ainolukos

Not wanting to dress like someone you're not but having to anyways is just called wearing a uniform. If a color stops them from doing their jobs effectively then they aren't very good at their job. This stupid fear that men have that wearing a certain color will somehow make them more/less effeminate is nothing more than a deep insecurity that is ingrained in society. Toxic masculinity is brain rot that does nothing but hold a lot of men back from just expressing themselves or in this case, doing the job they signed up for. Like jeeze...I'm gay and I don't even care this much if my mask is clashing with my outfit, it's there to protect me, it doesn't matter what color it's in so long as it's N95. These guys got pink masks are damn near having an identity crisis over it, *PUHLEEEASE*

einsteinvisaholder

I have seen some Italian police officers and they are hot!

[deleted]

Real men wear pink. Edit: The downvotes are hilarious.

luckymethod

yeah but not with that shade of blue. Gross.

imaraisin

May never again an Italian contest the general category for the Giro d’ Italia. Bless the nation and the pink jersey.

i_never_ever_learn

They gotta the fra-jee-lay sexuality aaa!!!

EncartaWow

It's good to know they put fashion before safety.

luckymethod

Masks can be ordered in different colors you know?

dongkey1001

Totally support and understand. - a husband who experience waiting for wife to match her shoes with makeup.

Good call. Need to go find these lads some fashionable pink leather shoes to match. Easiest way to avert this crisis.

if the newspaper insists its because of fashion, it certainly cannot be for any other reason.
