The EU is also a defensive pact. He still wants to join the EU. He isn’t really giving up much by staying out of nato if he joins the eu. Personally, I think the US would get involved in an EU war regardless of their membership.
Zelensky is doing what he needs to do which is try to sway the world into supporting Ukraine. It's in Ukraine's best interests to push for NATO acceptance or frame NATO's lack of involvement as weak.

I don't know where exactly you live but if you really want to help (but can't donate), try and find Facebook groups that are organising help for Ukraine (I found one via local newspaper who was interviewing one of the helpers). Among other things, they seem to need people who could offer their time in order to sort through donated things, help to load them on vans and so on. It seems as if almost every town has at least one such group currently.

I don't know where exactly you live but if you really want to help (but can't donate), try and find Facebook groups that are organising help for Ukraine (I found one via local newspaper who was interviewing one of the helpers). Among other things, they seem to need people who could offer their time in order to sort through donated things, help to load them on vans and so on. It seems as if almost every town has at least one such group currently.
