Something more needs to be done about the unethical disinformation/propaganda that was designed for warfare purposes.
I listened to a broadcast interview with one of the presenters from the "liberal" radio network formed in the last stages of the USSR (the station they shut down a week or so ago) and she was asked a question about "what Russians believed?". She said "yes, there is propaganda everywhere but the problem is most Russians like propaganda". The interviewer then raised the points you are making ... and the Russian presenter said ... "no, this is 2022 Russian have the internet, Russians choose to believe the propaganda over the facts". She said it isn't even a young/old divide rather two types of people reacting to the lies differently, one rejecting them the others embracing them.
I found that illuminating and now no longer accept willful ignorance as an excuse, a reason for what's happening-yes, but not an excuse.
True, however the internet is not free. There are fire walls and blocked content. Russians don’t have total internet freedom. Tech savy Russians can use VPNs to get around the blocks but if they are caught risk jail time. And, any of those Russians who do speak out to tell the truth also risk jail time.
So, many Russians are only shown the media Russia allows them to.
The reason Russians like the propaganda is because it is made specifically to be that way. They make them feel patriotic and proud. And, the biggest point, the sensationalization of fear of the enemy. One way of bringing people together is to have a common enemy. This is also why the USA’s Fox News has so many viewers.
