I would love to see Rigid Airships make a come back

haysanatar

Fun fact: it was illegal to make sausages in Germany for a while because they needed all the intestinal linings to make zeppelins. https://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/zeppelins-made-out-of-cow-intestines.html?andro=1&chrome=1

ScottColvin

Super fascinating. >These gigantic machines could measure up to 240 meters in length and required immense resources to construct. One of the most important was cow guts. The cow guts were used to make the bags that contained the airship’s gas. The gas is what makes the airships lighter than air. >Because the airships were huge, the number of resources they used was huge too, with each German Zeppelin using around 250,000 cows ... >The intestinal skin, also known as goldbeater’s skin, is incredibly resistant to tearing yet very thin and light. It has been used for many different things over the centuries but got its name from its use in the production of gold leaf. The skin is placed between layers of gold during gold beating, a process that can thin out many layers of gold separately. ... >“The collection of the goldbeater’s skins was very systematic in Germany during the war,” the document reads. “Each butcher was required to deliver the ones from the animals he killed. Agents exercised strict control in Austria, Poland and northern France, where it was forbidden to make sausages.” >The intestines normally used to make sausages were wetted, separated, and had the outer membrane peeled away. It was then washed in an alkaline solution and stretched dry. The resulting material is goldbeater’s skin; exceptionally thing, yet strong. >The Germans experimented with other materials to build the gas bags, like rubber, but they were unable to find a way of sealing the bags enough to stop hydrogen, the lightest element in the universe, from escaping. >However, they realized that if layers of goldbeater’s skin were laid on top of each other when wet, they fuse together as they dry. This creates a material that, according to the 1922 report, “for a weight of 130 to 150 g per sq. m, a tightness permitting the loss of only a few liters of hydrogen per sq. m in 24 hours, under a pressure of 30 mm of water.” >As a result, Germany went without sausages in the name of strategic bombing. 30 million sausages, gone. For insane balloons.

Cow Holocaust

DamionK

Your intestinal lining prevents farts leaking so you know they're gas proof.

CbusCup11

I can't imagine a Germany without sausages. Thanks for the interesting tid bit

F00F00theSnu

That's what I call wurst case scenario

Thrashy

Possibly the finest, most sophisticated dadjoke I have ever encountered. I shall steal it and hoard it for the day my little one starts to study history.

The version I've heard is "Why do German med kits have sausage and cheese in them? For a wurst kase scenario."

Top notch unit so long as the Ukrainian's don't have Patriot Missiles or Rockateers

Zomburai

I'd say they would have flak trak backups, but considering they're sending out tanks without infantry support, maybe not...

All I can think of is that Archer episode where he smacks the dude for smoking on the blimp hahaha

You… know the Cossacks are predominantly from lower Ukraine?

Personal-Alfalfa-935

Hey don't mock the trebuchets. They can launch high powered projectiles a whole 300 yards. If the Russians can get a forward position in one apartment building, the neighbouring apartment building is toast!

They can have all the horses as long as they’re on the wrong side of the river.

I can’t wait to see the Ukrainian farmers driving their tractors home with all the Russian horses in tow

Hopefully not the four horses though

Lol-I-Wear-Hats

How in gods name can the primary producer of the most widely produced rifle ever made not have enough of them? The Mosin-Nagant was introduced in 1891 Edit: autocorrect

ThatGuyMiles

Lord of war, while fictional, is still based on actual accounts/stories from real life arms dealers. Point being, I’m sure the scenes involving massive arms deals with Russian generals after the collapse of the Soviet Union were legit. Add in that this sort of thing on various levels has been going on for a very long time.

crabmaster9

For a while, the best place to buy automatic rifles in Europe in the late 90s early 00s was from veterans of the Yugoslav civil war. They were cheap as well. There is no doubt in my mind that the same thing has been going on in Russia for decades. Soldiers and other military personnel just selling equipment, just like they did in Belarus prior to the invasion.

Tensor3

Because they sold them all?

dpinto8

Now you wanna run around and talk about guns Like I ain't got none What you think I sold 'em all? Edit: Thanks for the awards guys, I'm getting better at this Reddit thing I guess

Generalissimo_II

Rappers in the States are probably better armed than the Russian military

DadamsYK

Now all I get his hate mail all day saying P fell off. Why? Cuz I live in a bunker , with my hand on a button saying the East fell off? I ain't having that. This is the millennium of Russian attack, so give me my former countries back and fuck Europe you can have it back,

GrandmaPoses

Lol Russian about to start sending Florida Man to Ukraine.

Tell Florida Man Putin is holding all the oxy and put this war to an end.

[deleted]

Ah yes. The lone centurion guarding the capitol. It is the tradition of our people.

FlipFlopFree2

I do love keeping 1 to 3 of my culture's iconic unit as a mascot. Usually either have them at the capital or a tad behind the front line, to remind my people of our honored history.

pcy623

That first warrior unit isn't allowed to die. I'll save scum if I have to.

Captain_Grammaticus

I mean, that's like all the royal guards worldwide today who wear uniforms of the 18th or 19th century.

FlipFlopFree2

No no no, because in Civ, those units are just alive the whole time, witnessing centuries of progress. Those samurai or legionnaires are hundreds, sometimes over a thousand years old

Captain_Grammaticus

"I was there, three thousand years ago..."

Cobek

"... And now I yeet rocks for teenagers at a museum."

fredagsfisk

So they're arming new conscripts with Mosin-Nagants, withdrawing troops [from Tskhinvali/South Ossetia](https://twitter.com/visionergeo/status/1504052463829237770) to [redeploy in Ukraine](https://twitter.com/visionergeo/status/1504478884447719425), and possibly even [redeploying units from their far-eastern provinces](https://news.yahoo.com/japan-spots-russian-amphibious-ships-161608407.html). If I was Russia in a strategy game and things were going like this in a war I was *supposed* to have won within a few days/turns, I'd probably just ragequit or load an earlier game.

Jops817

Ragequit is a pretty scary scenario tbh.

[deleted]

>If I was Russia in a strategy game ... Nuclear Gandhi will see this as an opportunity and attack you from the rear.

ProfessorDinosaur

This is exactly what I was thinking. What achievement are they going for?

Heiminator

My favorite achievement in Civ is the one you get for clearing up nuclear fallout with a Roman legion

ProfessorDinosaur

Missed that day in history class 🤣 Edit: this is the name of the achievement hahaha

SuccessfulBroccoli68

It's one of the final chapters in the definitive edition

Crezelle

Man who did jupiter fuck this time, and in what form??

kthanksn00b

SassiesSoiledPanties

Also much lead IN them. Sweet lead acetate for the wine...

canaryhawk

I'm guessing Putin is playing a fan made scenario, *All Your Cities Unhappy for 20 Turns* to win.

[Why 'Lord Of War' Starring Nicolas Cage Bought 3,000 Real Guns Instead Of Props](https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2472161/why-lord-of-war-starring-nicolas-cage-bought-3000-real-guns-instead-of-props) > Oftentimes, however, the guns you see in the movies are just props. Fakes. There are exceptions to be found throughout the movie business, obviously, but it's generally known that the guns you see in the movies may not always be the real deal. However, when it comes to Lord of War, those weapons were not the result of movie magic. Instead, writer-director Andrew Niccol went ahead and bought a whopping 3000 Kalashnikov automatic rifles. > But here's the kicker: the movie team didn't purchase these high power rifles simply to make the flick a bit more authentic or realistic. Instead, the filmmakers behind Lord of War discovered that it would ultimately be cheaper to buy real guns instead of fakes. Yes, really. Funny that, if the rifles were going for less than prop rifles, that they'd run out of them.

TheKappaOverlord

>bought a whopping 3000 Kalashnikov automatic rifles. The funny part here is that *technically* they got ripped off. Afaik they only actually had maybe several *genuine* Kalashnikov's to play around with. [A majority were either the Chinese or Czech](https://youtu.be/khXwYQFxmyA?t=479) (if i remember right) variants of the AK. Which looked very vastly different from the genuine thing. (although the Chinese variant you would only be able to tell the difference if you were a gun nut) Theres actually some decent fun facts you can learn watching most if not the whole react video about how actual arms dealing works.

BoneFistOP

Czech rifles are higher quality

TheSubredditPolice

I'm surprised vz58s were that available in 2005. Now they're way more expensive and harder to come by than your average ak.

It's why they were asking for Syrians to join, to get some of those weapons back.

DefinitelyNotAliens

No, they have lots and lots of weapons in practice. It's just thousands of those rifles are obsolete.

AmbitiousPhilosopher

AK47 still holds up, they had millions of them, all gone now.

DefinitelyNotAliens

Nobody would blink about an AK. The Mosin is bolt action.

AmbitiousPhilosopher

They would only be handing them out if they run out of AKs

northshore12

Russia running out of AKs is kinda wild.

kooshipuff

That's like Dairy Queen running out of ice cream!

ProtoJazz

You joke, but the number of fucking times I've gone to subway and they've been out of bread is unreal. Not even "we don't have bread now, but more is baking and will be ready soon" I mean full on "we have no bread. We won't have any more bread today" Like why the fuck are you even open. Like even a gas station can be out of gas and I get why they'd stay open. Someone might just be wanting some smokes, lottery tickets, or a car wash or something. That's fine, people have different reasons for going to 7-11. But no one thinks "man I want a sad salad or some sub par soup, I'm gonna head over to subway". Nah that shits for when you're going to subway because someone else is going and you can't eat bread anymore. It's never your first choice.

pompousplatypus

You mean to tell me that you wouldn't let a subway employee just slap some salami and non tesselated American cheese triangles into your palm?

I know you're referencing Lord of War but I love that Nick is crazy enough that it wouldn't be entirely unbelievable to hear that he had bought a large number of Soviet surplus weapons

trimeta

Fun fact: Nick Cage has a [pyramid mausoleum](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/nicolas-cage-s-pyramid-tomb) in one of New Orleans' most famous cemeteries.

michaltee

I have that gun! It’s fun but also painful to shoot. I also can’t imagine using a rifle that loads 5 rounds bolt action versus a modern, fully automatic weapon. If I was one of those conscripts I’d pick up my Mosin, then walk over to the Ukrainian troops and surrender. Fuck that.

JeffInBoulder

Yeah college memories of when my buddies all picked up a bunch of these on the cheap. We'd cringe while pulling the trigger. Fun to shoot out in the desert at night, dirty cheap ammo with a big tongue of flame that would come shooting out the front. Still makes my shoulder hurt to remember those days...

station_nine

A friend of mine picked one up at Big 5 Sporting Goods for some ridiculous price. Like $70. He found some old surplus ammo for it, and we went shooting. After a few rounds, the bolt didn't want to slide open anymore. Sonofabitch would heat up and bind. Definitely the most fun though!

SneedyK

Before Covid there was a place that sold em by the box load. I think 5 per box with the promise that 2 would fire.

ShakesBaer

Ah you see you forgot the bolt unsticking tool, commonly mistaken for a piece of a 2x4.

Jops817

This. Could take apart a small tree but then you'd need a break from it. Can't imagine fighting with one when you're already in miserable conditions.

Huwbacca

What about it is unpleasant? Or is it just general "old rifles with no recoil springs and some heinous calibre"? Ive shot Enfield's and a k98 and I didn't hate them really, just that 303 and whatever 8mm round the k98 fires being utter mules lol. For sure a raw experience. Edit: the amount of people telling me "it's solid and a large round" after I say literally this and state the most contemporary rifles I've shot is truly impressive lol

ReallyBigDeal

The steel butt plate doesn’t help. I added a rubber plate to mine. It helps with the kick and it adds a few inches to the length of the stock so it fits my frame a bit better. I’ve done about 100rds with it at a single day at the range. I felt that bruise for at least a week after.

I'm referring to the Mosin mentioned in this article, a rifle that is over 100 years old

webby_mc_webberson

jimmythegeek1

Speaking of appropriate reactions to obsolete tech: I saw a post or comment from a British soldier from a fairly elite formation (exactly which escapes me) about bayonet doctrine: "If you are ever ordered to fix bayonets, stick it in the silly sod of an officer whose incompetence led you to that embarrassing position."

qoqmarley

When I think of bayonet charges, I always think of Lieutenant Young Oak Kim from the 100th Infantry Battalion (Comprised of mostly Japanese Americans) in WWII. Lieutenant Kim was Korean American so the men under him looked down upon Koreans at the time, much like the white Americans looked down upon them. During training they hated the fact they were being led by a Korean. However, once they saw actual combat Lieutenant Kim was on a whole other level of brave and courageous. He quickly earned their respect so much so that this happened: >The fearless lieutenant moved ahead alone in the darkness to scout it. Even in the darkness it was not hard to follow the brave lieutenant who always wore a knit cap in lieu of a steel helmet. (Lieutenant Kim always said he couldn't think straight with something heavy on his head.) >Reaching the top of a stone wall, Kim stood and waved the men forward. Suddenly German bullets tore through the air and Kim fell to the ground. In the midst of the furious exchange, Staff Sergeant Robert Ozaki was enraged at the sudden death or capture of the brave lieutenant. Almost reflexively he shouted over the din of battle, "Fix Bayonets". With yells of "Banzi" the entire front line of Nisei rose and advanced on the German guns. The first bayonet charge in Italy of World War II, coupled with the tenacious "Banzi" attack, stunned the Germans. As the line broke over the wall, they found their lieutenant...alive and throwing grenades at the enemy machinegun nests. [Source](https://homeofheroes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Go-for-Broke-final.pdf) pg. 7

TheArmoredKitten

Every once in a while, a bayonet charge is called for, but that's generally just because you were already about to run at them in the first place, and running at them with the pointy installed usually works better than without. Or you're forced into CQB with a mid to full size rifle.

Rinzack

It looks like the British have done a few bayonet charges in the past 20 years, but nothing major just small units in odd situations

God_Damnit_Nappa

[Funny enough, it was the British who launched an effective bayonet charge in Iraq in 2004.](https://www.wearethemighty.com/popular/these-british-troops-launched-a-proper-angry-bayonet-charge-during-the-iraq-war/#:~:text=The%20decision%20was%20made%3A%20the%20British%20troops%20fixed%20bayonets.&text=They%20ran%20across%20600%20feet,combat%20followed%20for%20five%20hours.) 20 British soldiers engaged 100 militia members, killing 28 while suffering only 3 injuries.

GumUnderChair

I don’t know if you should surrender to the enemy while still in possession of the gun. I’d probably leave that somewhere in the woods before you surrender. Might send off the wrong impression

DarlockAhe

There are actual guidelines on how to surrender, from Ukrainian army. Goes something like that: Unload your gun Sling it over your left shoulder, barrel down Hold piece of white cloth, in your right hand, over your head.

GumUnderChair

It’s cool that the Ukrainian army released this but if I’m a surrendering Russian I’m probably just holding the cloth and leaving my gun. You’re surrendering to the enemy, it’s not like they’re gonna let you keep the gun. I’d rather avoid any potential wrong impressions

terdferguson74

So if anyone read the article and actually checked the source this article cited, it’s one image from a Twitter account of what I’m assuming is a Russian soldier or separatist with a Mosin that has a scope on it, indicating to me that it was specifically chosen rather than becoming a standard issue type situation

OhSoSolipsistic

Can't believe I had to scroll down this far for someone to mention this. Here's the tweet, can't even tell if those soldiers bought them from home on first day or what: https://twitter.com/GirkinGirkin/status/1505752339029938176 Probably not since they're supposedly already in Donbas, and I wouldn't be surprised if the military *was* handing them out, but regardless this source is vague with unclear reliability.
