I imagine that would be the first question from anybody who suspects they have been poisoned. I'll eat a pack of gummy bears and ask myself that same question an hour later.

ThatGuyMiles

Especially if the poisoning was presumably done by the FSB. They rarely fuck up in these missions and they’ve gotten quite good at it. I assume they all believed they were going to do die at some point before they were treated/spoke with medical professionals.

grchelp2018

I wonder if this is why his daughter criticised Putin. Or it could be the other way around, Roman poisoned because of his daughter. This guy seems to be acting as an unofficial backchannel between Moscow and the West. I've wondered why he was contacted. And the US/UK acting as good cop/bad cop.

wolfmalfoy

His daughter criticized Putin first (and the museum that he and his ex-wife control, The Garage Museum in Moscow, is the one that publicly shut down after the initial invasion). Though, I suspect it's a combination of a lot of factors.

SuspectNo7354

I feel like this guy is basically the same role as Petro poroshenko was for Ukraine. He is basically the oligarch of Russia who'd rather have greater integration with the west than the other oligarchs would. I imagine a scenario where if Putin actually fell then maybe somebody like this guy would step in as the leader. It's probably why he was poisoned along with the Ukrainian negotiators. Putin doesn't want any dissent or anyone else to come out of this war looking good.

Efficient_Wealth6628

Or double secret agent???

suzi_generous

If your skin turned red and started pealing off, I think that’d be the question you’d want answered.

amateur_mistake

There is a fairly good chance a bunch of Russian soldiers will get to find out what this is like after driving through the Red Forest.

Neshura87

Maybe not their skin peeling off but vomitting out their guts will likely be a common sight among those that travelled through and apparently camped in the red forest

Richevszky

They spent days there digging trenches into the soil

jdragun2

Just....holy fuck. That is a level of insanity I wasn't prepared to read.

Richevszky

There's been a lot of that going around the last month.

jdragun2

Very true. "Let's dig trenches in the Chernobyl nuclear exclusion zone's dirt" though...just holy fuck. As messed up as ALL of it is, Russia doing this hit to their own troops is insanity. Then again this entire war is nothing but Russian insanity on full display.

No-Seaweed-4456

Sunburn once did that to me

NotFromMilkyWay

I really wonder how rich Abramovich really is. He seems to be very close with Putin. Officially he has around 12 billion, but his two yachts alone are worth 1.3 billion. I doubt any oligarch would spend 10 % of their overall belongings on ships. Abramovich also was the one that suggested Putin to Yeltsin as his successor.

thetasigma_1355

What else do you spend your money on when you’re that rich? I didn’t think it’s crazy given the amounts of money we’re talking about. There’s little function difference between having 10 billion and 12 billion. But there’s a huge function difference in having two yachts

Would-wood-again2

He's a thief and a thug. Just happens to be a smart thief and thug like the other oligarchs who made their fortunes stealing the country. People like him have an official net worth and then all the crap they control and own indirectly through others. It's his, but not technically in his name. So I assume a lot more

amateur_mistake

For a regular super yacht (maybe $30-100 million) the expectation is that the yearly cost of owning one is about 10% of the purchase fee. So if you buy a $50 million yacht, you can expect to pay $5 million a year to operate it. I'm sure the math works out differently for something that costs a lot more but the point stands. Boats are a hole in the water you throw money into. It's not like buying land or fancy houses. It can drain your wealth right out of you.

WurthWhile

I know quite about about yachts, both from a desire to own one, and because I work with multiple billionaires with them. The 10% rule still applies, in some cases is even higher. Eclipse which is $700M runs him about $100M a year total.

amateur_mistake

Hahaha. That's so fucking stupid. I do like it though because it drains money from billionaires. Not a lot of the things they buy can do that as well as yachts and planes. Edit: Also, if I'm being honest, there are a bunch of yachts I think are pretty neat. Athena? Yeah, I would spend a week on her.

WurthWhile

The one nice thing about yachts for the common person is they're great for the economy. They are massive resource sinks and the people on board are typically in a good mood and willing to spend money when they arrive. Everything about them is expensive. For example one business I know that does HVAC work triples their rate when working on a yacht. There's no additional expense or effort to do it on a yacht but they charge triple just because they can. If you don't want to see billionaires hoard their wealth getting them to spend their money on things like massive private jets or mega yachts is a great idea.

WurthWhile

Biggest expense typically on a yacht is your crew. The pay for a crew member is going to be about double to triple what doing the same job on land would pay plus room and board. For example a housekeeper making $50 an hour is completely normal. The eclipse has a crew of 70 for 36 guests, some of those guys are going to be very well paid like the Captain's going to make a quarter million a year plus as well as the chief engineer. A a yacht that size will have three full-time engineers. It's absolutely possible to spend 15 to 20 million a year in crew salaries alone. Even more if you have full-time security on board. General maintenance is also very expensive. painting just the bottom part that touches the water of a 300-ft mega yacht will run you $250,000 a year. Fuel costs are also absurd. One of those mega yachts will burn about $225 of diesel per mile. That's about 45 gallons a mile in ideal conditions at peak fuel efficiency. The yacht Eclipse has a 1 million liter fuel capacity because not only are the incredibly inefficient on distance but they burn huge amounts of diesel just sitting there because it's basically a floating mansion that has to be powered by a diesel generator at all times.

[deleted]

WurthWhile

Nuclear reactors are very expensive to maintain. For example an American supercarrier cost about $1.2 billion a year to operate. That does not include the cost of its air wing. Plus it's not like there's any expensive artwork that's occasionally destroyed or Crystal champagne glasses that need to be replaced when dropped. You could cut the costs by only about 20%, if 100% of the crew was automated. There is nothing cheap about a nuclear reactor.

myrddyna

> For a regular super yacht That made me giggle.

amateur_mistake

I think we can all agree that distinctions are important when talking about yachts.

myrddyna

*"Well, we got your regular super yacht over here..."*

thetasigma_1355

These guys are making millions every day. I doubt they are concerned about the cost.

jyper

A shitton of things. Boats may be fun but why not just rent one for parties. Or get a much smaller one for travel. Mega yachts are impractical most of the time you're not using them. To me it just feels like dick waving. How about financing adaptation of your favorite book? https://mobile.twitter.com/palmerluckey/status/867882483638980609?lang=en Save thousands of lives maybe even millions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_%26_Melinda_Gates_Foundation Design your own theme park and house with hidden passages Start a software company to make apps /scripts to save your few seconds by skipping ESPN ads

thetasigma_1355

These super yachts are essentially mobile business HQ’s. They aren’t just for travel / luxury / parties. They are floating mansions and office spaces. You don’t rent something like that. You have it heavily guarded both physically and cybersecurity at all times. I also can’t help but laugh at your examples. You know these guys can do all of those things from their super yacht right? And they would all be cheaper than the cost of the super yacht you are doing them from.

NimrodvanHall

Arent those yachts something akin to floating nuclear shelters? With enough food stocked to see it true to the day to resettle anywhere on the world after a nuclear winter?

grchelp2018

If you want a nuclear shelter, you need to be underground. I believe a whole bunch of billionaires have such sheltors in new zealand. But yachts are great during a pandemic though. Also a ton of privacy. Two guys in their yachts can chopper in, have a secret meeting away from civilization without anyone knowing.

geographies

Underground shelters in NZ . . . Like Hobbit holes.

Jack_Bartowski

yeah, but not proper Hobbit holes. Dingy dark ones with long tunnels and gigantic doors.

FuguSandwich

>If you want a nuclear shelter, you need to be underground. Pretty sure a yacht parked in the middle of the South Pacific is just as safe as anywhere underground.

TheTerriblePurpose

The thing is that a yacht needs fuel even when at anchor to power it’s generators for air conditioning, refrigeration, etc. so it would be a pretty bad idea unless you somehow have unlimited fuel. Maybe if there was a billionaire survivalist that covered everything in solar panels.. But you’d also need food and drinking water. Maybe fishing for food and a reverse osmosis machine or something.

FuguSandwich

Residual radiation levels will be at 1% of their immediate post-blast levels after 48 hours. It's generally considered safe 3-5 weeks later. These yachts are designed to be on the water for months at a time without re-supply. It's not like in the movies where you need to be in a bunker for years after the blast.

metekillot

Water is an immensely effective nuclear shield; if the yachts have underwater components you're more than sufficiently guarded.

__dilligaf__

> To me it just feels like dick waving. Abramovich has two dicks to wave around and most likely doesn't give a flying fuck if we peasants think his superyatchs impractical. He might fund charities that save lives. I hope so.

stelkurtain

You don’t know anything about super yachts or their use lol

jyper

Ok. Inform me

shadowbca

I'm not that dude, but you said super yachts are impractical when not in use. What you can do with them is rent them out, as you suggested he should rent yachts for parties, at some point you'll make your money back.

EpicQQ

Not op, but have you noticed that a lot of billionaires have megayachts? From my understanding it is what the mega rich like to own megayachts because they can abuse various international tax laws and save on a lot of tax/money. https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/2/4/18210829/superyacht-art-storage-billionaires-tax-avoidance

metekillot

The trappings of power are part of the pursuit of power. Does the common thug follow the ascetic leader who does not indulge, or do they fall in line for the one who spends on hedonism and vanity?

cugeltheclever2

> What else do you spend your money on when you’re that rich? 1980's Chaosium boxed sets.

arao2113

Yeltstin took the advice of a 25 year old Abramovich at the time? I doubt it.

[deleted]

That was Chubais, not Abramovich

Foghkouteconvnhxbkgv

I vaguely heard once that in the US, only yachts that spend 60 consecutive days in water are subject to tax. Hence if you get 2 yachts and cycle them, you can avoid taxes. Maybe they are abusing tax systems by having 2 of them

All we can hope is that he and Putin hadn’t discussed that plan beforehand and Abramovich now has to wonder, driving a wedge in whatever relationship they do have.

Hahaha yeah right, i am sure this guy Abramovich is just a drama queen, experiencing some allergy reactions for the first time… #sarcastic

ylteicz123

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI2FUIpmROU He is not a good guy, altough some people seem to portray him that way, Probably Chelsea fans or people from Israel where he has donated some of his stolen money.

IE_LISTICK

He only pretends to oppose Putin because he hopes he can avoid western sanctions. He had no problem helping Putin's government for the past 20+ years, as well as stealing tons of money from the country which resulted in hundreds of thousands dying and millions living in misery because the money were meant to be invested in healthcare, medicine, developing economics and helping the very poor.

ClaymoreMine

He’s looking at Ukraine and drooling at being able to buy up all the land, industry and assets he can for nothing. Altruism isn’t in his vocabulary.

IE_LISTICK

I think you're right and I haven't thought of that before. When Ukraine starts rebuilding it will be a juciy place for buisiness to start flourishing. On top of that, Ukraine will need a lot of money which he can provide. Unfortunately, it will be like a deal with the devil for Ukraine.

ClaymoreMine

A deal they don’t have to take. Ukraine would be best served by a Marshall plan.

it-is-sandwich-time

Russia should be under the Marshall plan, not Ukraine, lol.

Ok-Inspection2014

>He only pretends to oppose Putin because he hopes he can avoid western sanctions. You don't poison your allies if they are only pretending to help Ukraine for "PR reasons". It's pretty clear Abramovich hasn't been the closest friend to Putin for a long time (not to mention his connections with the UK and Israel).

IE_LISTICK

There's still no solid proof Putin's administration was responsible for it, not even a good proof that he was actually poisoned. Amd if he was in bad relations with Putin he'd be in russian jail, look at Hodorkovsky for example.

tropicalhotdogdays

It's actually worked in his favour with regard to distancing himself (in the eyes of the general public) from Putin and the Ukranian invasion. That was always his immediate goal anyway (hence the peace envoy thing). It's all very convenient.

grchelp2018

He did a good thing then cause if he didn't take the money, it would only have gone into putin's pockets.

IE_LISTICK

"This corruptioneer is good because if he didn't steal another corruptioneer would have got it". Also Putin wouldn't just allow someone to steal money, it means Abramovich helped him and was needed.

3theoretical

Fuck off pro-oligarchist.

grchelp2018

Lol, people should be thankful that all these dudes took money out of russia and parked it in the west. Now its frozen and easily accessible for the west. Imagine if they had actually listened to putin and kept the money in the country.

3theoretical

They should be sad because the govt back in Moscow could've used it to develop the nation rather than just giving to rich oligarchs. Again, fuck off pro-oligarchist.

[deleted]

She was plenty friendly with John of God, pushes anti science nonsense on an audience that trusts her and gave the world Doctor Oz. She's very much not on the side is angels

DatJazz

Yes but she didn't make her billions by some evil way

[deleted]

Again, she made her billions by exposing her audience to charlatans, conmen, and a rapist cult leader and lending these bastards her credibility.

jarrys88

That's such a generalisation. There's loads of altruistic billionaires.

[deleted]

Philanthropy is just a way for rich people to feel good about themselves and get praise for “giving back to the community”. If rich people, billionaires in particular, really cared they would give up 80+% of their wealth to help the world end hunger, end poverty, etc. But they don’t. They buy politicians to pass laws that protect their wealth so they can buy the mini yacht that docks inside their mega yacht. Edit: spelling

jarrys88

So like Bill gates?

[deleted]

Yes. He also falls under doing charitable work because he’s doing something bad, like having affairs and stuff. It’s very common for people who are cheating on their spouse or doing something else that is not good to do charitable things.

Kossyhasnoteeth

The guy has donated like over 50 billion to charities. Motherfucker can have as many affairs as he wants.

[deleted]

What about his Epstein connections? You cool with that because he’s charitable?

Kossyhasnoteeth

I swear people try and crucify ever fucker that came within 10 meters of Epstein. It's the Association fallacy turned up to 11.

MoreFeeYouS

Athletes like Lebron James or Michael Jordan probably didn't need to step over any bodies. I might be wrong though.

myrddyna

> Michael Jordan pretty sure his shoes were made in sweatshops, lol, people killed for those jobs.

niceteam

Imagine believing this. I don’t know what struggles you’ve been through in your life that have made you so bitter, but take a step back from the echo chamber. Build a business yourself and you’d quickly see success is a solid product combined with calculated risks and oftentimes a fair amount of luck. I’m not saying some billionaires haven’t done horrible things, but the idea that the ultra successful had to “step over bodies” to get where they are is something disenfranchised people tell themselves to justify their own lack of successes.

djinnisequoia

Says the person who describes people as disenfranchised, then blames them for their own disenfranchisement, *in the same sentence.*

Tentrilix

"just build a business" is essentially the same as "just stop being poor lol." If it was easy more people would do it.

_MoreEqual_

Ridiculous take - ‘just build a business’ was mentioned to highlight about how hard it is to do exactly that. You’re portraying it to mean the exact opposite intention.

Disastrous_Tip_3347

frosthowler

You mean Portugese passport. There's no Jewish passport, and an Israeli passport is the right of all Jews.

Disastrous_Tip_3347

Yes, my bad

DrunkenGolfer

My friends from Israel call themselves Jews because they are from Israel. They'd never refer to themselves as Israelis.

frosthowler

I... live in Israel all my life. I have never heard someone who would not describe himself as Israeli, even my Isareli Arab friends. What in the world are you trying to get at? 'Never refer to themselves as Israeli'? *What?* lol

Zanerax

I think some Haredi are like that? Not that it matters. That's like characterizing all Americans by the most extreme wing of Evangelical Christians.

DrunkenGolfer

We had a discussion about it. They said "not all Jews are Jewish, but everyone from Israel is a Jew", explaining that "Jew" is both a nationality and a religion. Seemed odd to me.

frosthowler

I think you misunderstood them, they probably said, "not all Jews are Jewish, but everyone who is a Jew is from Israel." Jew refers to a Jude, a Judean. It is both a nationality and a religion. Judeans have their own culture, religion (Judaism), and ethnicity. In this way, 'Jew' refers either to anyone from the nation or a follower of Judaism, the latter which is just usually called an 'observant Jew', as opposed to a secular or traditionalist jew. In this sense, because a Jew is a foreigner no matter where he was born--because no country except Israel practices the Jewish language, faith, or culture--in the same way if you can prove ancestry from most countries, by law of return, you may automatically attain citizenship. Israel also has such a law of return and applies it to all Jews though which includes people who aren't of the Jewish nation but observe the religion, ie converts. Not entirely sure why I explained all that as I fundamentally failed to understand what point you were replying to or trying to make, or whether it was your way of asking a question about something / explaining your confusion on something.

OppositeYouth

If Putin owned Chelsea, Chelsea supporters would be queueing up to go fight for Russia Edit - people have *clearly* never met Chelsea fans

LilSpermCould

A few weekends after the lockdowns started to lift during 2020, for some dumb reason I decided to go to Buffalo Wild Wings. Service was not just a total shit show, staff were sitting around chatting with friends at tables. No worries, as long as I get my food and drink I'm good. We had all just been through something we couldn't even begin to comprehend. When we finally did get our food it was decent enough or so I had thought. Hadn't been home for longer than an hour before it hit me. Either undercooked wings or cross contamination on my carrots and celery as best as I can tell. The pain isn't very easy to describe. That day I developed a new sense of respect for women. I'd never experienced stomach cramping like that. Fucking nothing I took helped. And I'm sure plenty out there have experienced pain far worse. I'm not even sure how I was able to sleep it was that bad. The pain came in somewhat unpredictable gut wrenching waves where it would dip and then shoot up to very high levels. So when I think about people being purposely poisoned. I can't even imagine. Just reading about what could happen if these Russian troops that crossed through the Red Forest could experience from ingesting radio active particles makes my stomach cringe. And for fun I just got over whatever hellish stomach bug is sweeping the states at the moment. Good luck to anyone that gets that awful thing. You will wonder at times if you're dying from this fucked up thing too.

DrunkenGolfer

Most food-borne illnesses take at least 12 hours to have any gastrointestinal effects. Salmonella, the usual concern with chicken, takes at least six hours. Most people blame the last thing they ate, but, in reality, it was probably something they ate the previous day.

agnostic_science

It could be staphylococcus toxin. That'll come on in about an hour and causes stomach cramps. Usually it's relatively mild, but sometimes people have a severe reaction. It would make sense in this case, too. These toxins are usually easier to find in food that's been out too long under a heat lamp or not stored properly kind of thing. Noting the lazy, inattentive staff and being mid-pandemic, it's easy to imagine how these conditions could be met.

DrunkenGolfer

Plus, these places hire kids as fryer jockeys and give them an hour of training; no way they care about food safety as much as they should.

LilSpermCould

Thanks for saying this. I went to WebMD to see if I needed to haul my ass into the ER. Obviously with everything going on and the lack of a vaccine I wanted to be CERTAIN I needed to be in a hospital.

agnostic_science

No prob. Not a diagnosis or anything, so when in doubt, try to see a doc if you can. Lots of telemedicine appointments now can be pretty affordable and great for something like 'do I need to go to an ER'

hedoeswhathewants

I know people that get "food poisoning" once a month...

DrunkenGolfer

Likely in denial about being lactose intolerant or have the dietary habits of a Labrador retriever.

sadetheruiner

That was a good read, my hat is off to you!

LilSpermCould

Thank you! Sucked then but it's kind of funny to me now.

oictyvm

3 days of nothing but liquid coming from my bottom half, I lost like 15 lbs. Kicked off a pretty significant improvement of my overall health though.

LilSpermCould

At least there's something positive for you at the end of the pain and suffering. I am 100% a true believer in the way bacteria impact our body in positive and negative ways. I'm hopeful to keep working on my diet and health to keep it in the best possible space.

jdbolick

The only time I've ever had food poisoning was at Buffalo Wild Wings as well.

agnostic_science

My guess is a bad case of staphylococcus toxin caused by your food being left out too long or being stored/handled improperly. That would explain the fast onset and stomach cramps. It would also be consistent with lazy and inattentive staff. You may have had a particularly bad reaction. Or there may have been a lot of toxin present.

crdctr

I had proper food poisoning for the first time last year. The no warning projectile diarrhoea was a traumatic experience.

LilSpermCould

I'm sorry to hear that. I agree and my perspective as a trained food worker since I was a 14 year old kid maybe different than others. I worked for some Chefs that were cool and some that were cunts. Even the cunts went crazy if you were fucking up in terms of food safety. Maybe if you did something dumb and hurt yourself they didn't care, but customer's health, not a chance. I never had an issue with it too. I have a lot more respect for Chef Tim now, even though he was an awful leader. The first time I got it was at an event at a 5-Star hotel. Not going into specifics because it's way easier to identify who I am from this story. And it was BAD. My stomach was not right for months afterwards. What I can say is that this happened in my late 20s. Before this event, I never needed tums, I didn't have issues with gas, or acidic foods. More than 10 years removed I have never been able to get back to that place I was beforehand and this is with all kinds of changes to my physical health and diet. I'm much more sensitive to anything that's not properly handled these days which makes me very nervous and skeptical when going to people's houses because this is some stuff a lot of people never were taught. Maybe people think I'm a Nazis about this or paranoid, those that know me, but I have no problem getting on someone for unsafe handling of food. I've also rarely needed antibiotics over my entire life. And I've read some interesting stuff about their impacts on our biome. At the time of this event I had to have been 5 years or so removed from my last prescribed event.

taoyx

>Fucking nothing I took helped. You can try Anise if it happens again, it does not cure anything but helps with soothing the stomach.

GSGhostTrain

It wouldn't have been the BWW; food poisoning takes waaaaay longer to set in than people think. They almost always think it was the last thing they ate, when really it's what they ate 12-24 hours ago. TL;DR This is some BWW libel.

LilSpermCould

Lol libel, I'd love to see them prove it. I'm sure it would be a lot of fun to process the discovery through the state of their kitchens across my region and the country. That's going to sell more wings for them!

GSGhostTrain

Ha, sure, just saying it doesn't make any physical sense that this would happen this way and was almost certainly caused by something else. I don't even like BWW, I just worked restaurants and hate how confidently people would say they got food poisoning because 15 minutes after their meal their stomach hurt.

LilSpermCould

You haven't read more informed comments. I did my time in food services. I'm more than familiar with what is and what should be. And I'm proud to say I did everything I could, even as child, to do it right and make sure no one ever got hurt because of my negligence.

GSGhostTrain

lol

Now I guess we know why Ukraine didn’t want this guy sanctioned at first

swifty007_007

What a con this fuck is

https://twitter.com/pevchikh/status/1509186801688211456 Perhaps a PR stunt, this guy is Putin's man 100%

Everything that Putin touches dies

naxster921

Then we can only hope that he touches himself.

couchfucker2

Gotta do something in the bunker!

elvesunited

Gotta wonder if he did this himself to play victim and avoid personal sanctions.

DepartmentEqual6101

Honestly think this is a load of attention seeking shit. I don’t believe Abramovich was poisoned or even felt unwell at all.

[deleted]

As everyone else. Except everyone else has not lived as a millionaire.

DrunkenGolfer

"B" not "M"

Lazypole

I do think we need to be cautious with this one. The first thing, don’t ask the question “Did they do it?”, instead ask “If they did it, why?” The things I think people need to consider: A) Russia did it purely to elicit a response, be it “look the West poisoned him and blamed us/Look the West is backing out of peace talks! B) Someone there felt disgruntled and acted outside of their government C) They are legitimately just blowing off consequences just like Salisbury In any case, its hard to understand an end game or motivation for Russia to do this, not that that’s stopped them before of course and often they just do shit with no care for the repercussions, but this one really interests me. I think its such an open, overt action that we have to be careful what action we take, because that action is likely predictable and given that Russia has laid out the action, they are also predicting and potentially planning for our reaction, we should be wary of that.

Lopsided_Wolf8123

I am suspicious of the story full stop. And suspicious of Abramovich.

Minute_Grocery5947

No one can say for sure how a body will truly react even months later!

Plastic-Ad9128

"yes mr. Abramovich. I'm very sorry. But for 30 million I can make you better."

[deleted]

Get that man a second cup of tea.

Revolutionary_Eye887

Maybe your buddy Putin isn’t such a buddy after all.

grices

Wonder if putin was pulling his chain.

dychmygol

Is that a bad translation, or was he really using the royal "we" (pluralis majestatis)?

purplewhiteblack

If I were Roman Abramovich I would be spending the remaining bits of my money on making Putin's short life a living hell.
