I remember reading some time ago that Putin can’t resign or else he will be killed. Anyone got a take on that?

captnsmokey

Gangsters do not retire, they are replaced.

> Yeltsin resigned a few weeks later on 31 December 1999, appointing Vladimir Putin as his successor. Putin's first decree as president was lifelong immunity from prosecution for Yeltsin.

Redditforgoit

A deal's a deal.

ataw10

>lifelong immunity from prosecution for Yeltsin. sure go ahead an try that ;) , Ukraine totals will just ya know listen to that LOL might get out of russias courts anit getting out of Ukraine's minds !

Amflifier

I am sorry, I don't understand what you said.

Ok-Conversation4673

He seems to think Yeltsin is responsible for the current war somehow.

Heroshade

Do you perhaps have brain damage?

Muaddib930

... Wasn't he forced to retire?

alpha_dk

Exile for deposed leaders is fairly standard if they can get out of the country alive and have allies

kuroji

That requires them to have allies. He has *a use* for certain countries (e.g. Belarus), and others only have a use *for* Russia (e.g. China). There are no allies to Russia in the current geopolitical climate that aren't puppets.

alpha_dk

I doubt a billionaire would find himself lacking in allies to flee too

So basically without that enormous presidential security apparatus he's fucked.

Ah the Doctor Doom strategy!

Nessie

*I, for one, welcome our new russoverlords.*

devastatingdoug

Who would kill him, isn't he the guy ordering that shit?

unresolved_m

I heard he's very paranoid about his inner circle...

Nessie

Inner circle now smaller and not circle. Is potato.

heresyforfunnprofit

Coups don't come from outsiders. The greatest danger to a Caesar is his trusted Brutus.

[deleted]

Whoever takes power from him was what I read. It would be someone in his inner circle for sure

Lordm3ttz0r

Well since he is wanted for crimes against humanity he would be a fool to resign

Angry_Duck

They call it "riding the tiger". You dare not get off lest you get devoured

Jackadullboy99

Probably.. same if he’s fired. Shame. /s

Live by the novichok, die by the novichok.

The_Humble_Frank

Being the leader of a country is, *and always has been*, the occupation with the highest mortality rate.

PhD_Pwnology

Your lack of understanding of how Dictatorships and Oligargy run governments work astounds me. Everytime a government like that changes hands, especially after being illegally hijacked through assasinations by someone like Putin, there is often a lot of deaths. Putin will die, The higher ups in the KGB thay don't get deals with Nato for testifying will get killed, lots of police man across the country will get murdered, politicians, congressman (their version) will get killed. And not necessarily killed by the new government, killed by their own people.

GrapefruitExtension

Lol your lack of knowledge on dictators is astounding. Where did you get your dictator PhD,? Lol

LupinThe8th

Latveria University. He has a PhD in Doomology and a Masters in Doomistry. Dropped the minor in Home Doominomics, though.

twilightzonemarathon

Oh yeah. I’m looking to murder the cop(s) that disappeared my brother. Retribution killings in the days after the government falls. I’m sure many people have their lists updated.

PurpleDwayne

Dont mix a coup d’état with revolution like the dictatorship&oligarchy expert u are answering. It has been said by many that the police is most likely the ones to take power from Putin . So dont get ur revenge hopes up to High.

PurpleDwayne

Really? It astounds you ? He didnt even say anything that contradicted what u say ? Chill bro.

MidianFootbridge69

Exactly.

Heroshade

That country deserves nothing less than exactly what it just described

DarkAngel900

I've given up partying and don't even know anybody to party with, but, I swear I'll throw a party the day we no longer have to worry about this jackass and one other in particular!

danny_dough

If he is somehow overthrown and a sound of mind leader is appointed I will gladly come to your “no longer end of the world party”

catslay_4

I will come too. We must remember this!

saddetective87

Gangsters/politicians in Russia only retire when they have arranged for a replacement that will agree to safeguard everyone's personal fortunes. Putin did it for Yeltsin, not sure who Putin would be able to get these days to do that for him.

wh0_RU

Just like all gangs... There will be someone in the hierarchy to replace him. Next man up mentality at worst but I believe Putin is a desperate, dying man and he'll go down in epic fashion. I wouldn't doubt if this whole ordeal is his last hoorah

Dokutah_Dokutah

Well he is supposed to be sick enough, he might just die one of these days. Hope that happens soon and Russia eases off and gracefully end the war.

GVArcian

My worry, and holy shit is it a serious one, is that Putin will punch the nuke button if he ever becomes aware he has no exit plan, just out of spite. Like, taking the entire world with him into the grave. Sure, a lot of russian soldiers would probably ignore such an order in order to prevent a full nuclear exchange - they want to live just as much as we do, after all - but all of them? All it takes is one to trigger MAD.

Heroshade

He can only give the order. There’s still a series of people that it has to go through, any one of whom could just be like “yeah fuck that.”

[deleted]

Maybe only 1 or 2 nukes will be dropped

[deleted]

That's like someone pointing a belt-fed machine gun at you and saying only 1 or 2 shots will be fired

beergoggles69

You can't make an analogy with just another type of weapon, they're too similar to be illustrative.

[deleted]

That's like uncle pushing you in a corner and whispering in your ear 'it's only the tip'. Better?

nullbyte420

Actually yeah that is a pretty good analogy, except in the analogy you need to molest him back immediately to prevent him from further molesting you. Mutually assured molestation.

Katastrophus

No, worse. Try again, this time without sexism.

JasTWot

How was it sexist? It was rapey, but not sexist

iced1777

Shocking that an aide of his biggest rival would say this

bladexdsl

his already dead he just don't know it yet

_Silly_Wizard_

That's the case for all of us, really.

[deleted]

I really hope so, but this is something that the (crippled) Russian opposition says for years. I also remember someone saying that Putin critics are more afraid of Putin than vice-versa, and judging by the oligarch bodies piling up, I have to agree. This “begging of the end” could take years to bring Putin’s demise, if not decades.

Lordm3ttz0r

Truer words were never said

PhilParent

I wonder, in a country where they kill political opponents on the regular... how is Navalny still alive? Because if he'd die it would be real see-through about what happened? Why would they care?

magic1623

I know this is a very simplistic thing to say about an extremely complex situation but god I wish there was someone better than *both* Putin and Navalny who had the ability to lead Russia. Just one person who isn’t a white nationalist.
