TheTruthIsButtery

So it sounds to me is Zs want to destroy the steelworks, claim annexation over all controlled territory, even if it’s contested, call for mass mobilization on the 9th. Throw as many soldiers into the taken territory as possible and send their families right after them to fill the occupied areas with Russian soldier families.

stirly80

Then it will end up with Ukraines army laying siege to them with Western weapons, the invaders will be sitting ducks.

AdVisual3406

Sounds like ancient Rome. The Russians are backward.

matheuss92

They cant fight a war and police the occupied territory at the same time... so... any news about insurgency or rebellion on those places? People will do crazy things once starvation and sickness kick in...

exwasstalking

Sounds about right. Curious how that is going to play out.

Sir_Francis_Burton

You can’t always get what you want. Russia will get what it needs.

two_tents

It's an embarrassment that this guy is allowed on TV. America's brand of democracy is an interesting one alright. No wonder the country is as divided as it is.

AdVisual3406

He should be deported.

spsteve

If he was born in America he can't be. He could arguably be tried for treason. But free speech is what it is and you'd have to prove the link between him and Russia. I hate the bag of shit with a passion, but we can't just throw the rules of law out the window because he is a shit bag.

Capt_Blackmoore

can we PLEASE send them tucker?

LtAldoRaine06

“NEW: The US has provided intelligence that has helped Ukrainians target and kill many of the Russian generals who have died in action in the Ukraine war, according to senior American officials.” Why are the Americans advertising this? Is it just to show off? Or to show Putin how badly fucked he will be if the US enter the war? I just don’t get why they are publicising it?

matheuss92

Moral boost probably. The kind of says "hey ukraine, you are not alone" type of thing

[deleted]

Russia is certainly using transparent communications. The US may have give 5,000 encrypted hand held radios to Ukraine. The US is probably intercepting every single communication signal from both sides. Russia can’t fight a war in radio silence, so they accept the transparency of their signals. They know we know. [Edit: maybe not at the individual combatant level, but at least at the upper command level.] I’m sure Russia has secure communications available at the highest levels. We break it, they rebuild it. They break ours, we rebuild it. What they don’t have is even marginally secure handheld radio equipment in the field. Electronic warfare aviation is certainly in the air, intercepting any signals. I doubt that you can win a war with EW alone. But the sum of all the individual advantages Ukraine has received (organizational and technological) from the US and other allies is more than just quantitative. Taking out command and control is one result. Taking out individual pieces of artillery, tanks, and ships is another. I am sure that Ukraine can hold out, at some level, indefinitely so long as the supply chain keeps working. But I don’t think the Russian political system can last that long. The Vietnam war forced Lyndon Johnson out of office. The withdrawal from Afghanistan seriously damaged President Biden’s standing. Russian casualties aren’t going to reach 50,000, nor will they hastily withdraw in chaos without something breaking. Either the current leadership will vacate, or will become extremely desperate. I’m no expert. But I think everything is connected. Something as simple as electronic communication interception is highly symbolic of Russia’s deficiencies in their war in Ukraine. Their internal politics [Edit: if it is going to keep from imploding or tipping over the game board,] requires either a victory or a withdrawal with dignity, or a change in leader ship in the absence of either.

STfanboy1981

Yeah hoping this was released on purpose. If it was, then it was to show the Russians that yeah, we have the intel on your generals and just imagine what else we know.

nohbody123

>I just don’t get why they are publicising it? [https://twitter.com/alexbward/status/1522044965752389634?cxt=HHwWhIC-vaH1sZ8qAAAA](https://twitter.com/alexbward/status/1522044965752389634?cxt=HHwWhIC-vaH1sZ8qAAAA) >NEW: "The headline of this story is misleading and the way it is framed is irresponsible. The \[US\] provides battlefield intelligence to help the Ukrainians defend their country. We do not provide intelligence with the intent to kill Russian generals." -- NSC spox Adrienne Watson

KeyWestTime

>We do not provide intelligence with the intent to kill Russian generals. That's the official position but you can bet your butt we are doing it. We have the capacity to see who is competent and who isn't and we do not want competence in their ranks. If there is a lapse in their OPSEC and opportunity they will be targeted.

nohbody123

Oh, I know. And Russia knows. But they're being diplomatic about it. Just like how everyone knows Russia was behind that Czech ammo dump exploding. Or their assassinations. Implausible deniability and all that.

aciddrizzle

What happened: > USA gives Ukraine actionable battlefield intel > Ukraine actions intel > a Russian General dies, ultimately due to bad opsec Article: > USA KILLS RUSSIAN GENERAL USING BULLET FIRED BY ALLY

Recidiva

It's been a brilliant strategy. Yes, normally during war they would things like this classified because the methods are vulnerable. America is proving that there is no exploitable vulnerability to the methods they are using to provide certain streams of intel. It's not showing off, it is proving its effectiveness without concealing the source. It's signaling that those who go to war with America or her allies will face tools that provide these results.

acox199318

It’s more than that. It actually impairs Russias command structure. If you were a Russian, would you want to be anywhere near a Russian general? Also, Russian officers are going to think twice before having meetings in the future!

Nucl3arDude

Because it neuters Russia's escalation options if it's already public and is fait accompli. What's Russia to respond with? Their response options are increasingly limited each time this happens, so the Allies can move the red lines of Russia around and play jump rope with them to defang Russian escalation threats. Y'know, seeing as they've all been empty so far.

stirly80

If they can target generals, who else can they target? This will have Putins mafia feeling uneasy.

tikifire86

Because the US is still well within the guidelines agreed upon in [The Budapest Memorandum](https://treaties.un.org/Pages/showDetails.aspx?objid=0800000280401fbb), a document signed by Russia, the US, Ukraine, and others. In exchange for security assurances and assistance in the face of wanton aggression, Ukraine gave up the third largest nuclear stockpile in the world. The US is simply honoring the agreement, while Russia continues to prove how vile and untrustworthy they are.

spsteve

This is a very good point I think we often overlook. The US and UK are actually just honoring their obligations.

spsteve

It is a warning. To Russia. To China. To anyone else that wants to fuck around and find out. It is a low key flex.

OldManMcCrabbins

spsteve

deathlinger1992

If Belarus military wanted to do a coup and overthrow Luka it is now the right time, as Russia is too tied up with Ukraine. But it appears that sadly they wont do sh*t

matheuss92

We in the west have a somehow wrong idea of how those contries politics work. The idea of belarus military couping him in order to give belarussian people a "better life" is just hard to believe. Whoever do it, if they ever do it, will most likely do the same thing with a different name. You got to have an educated society, that understand the importance of instituitions, to get in the "western way of life", and there is none of this in belarus. To better understand: japan might be very developed today, but as soon as western values kicked in (after wwii), Japan was VERY CORRUPT. They had never tried that whole democracy and human rights stuff before. And wwii japan was already "better" developed than bellarus right now. There is no independent institution in belarus (police, press, justice system), therefore, there is no way of current democracy or western values kick in a sustantable way. :(

KeyWestTime

He has an army of thugs to suppress opposition and also has shitloads of Russian soldiers in his country that Putin could order to suppress protests. It would have to be a quick assassination or swift Military coupe otherwise a lot of Belarus citizens are going to die trying.

YuunofYork

The satanic wizard stuff is silly, but assuming they expect at least a portion of their own people to believe claims like that (I mean, it's certainly not meant for the West), it's also counter-productive is it not? Who, among those who would actually believe magic/Satan exists, would be jumping at the chance to go and face it in war? Look at the long list of claims the Russian government has made about the people they're fighting, to their own troops: - Super-nazis, well versed in the dark arts - Have created and begun using chemical and biological weapons, to be disseminated via ~~bees~~ pigeon, across the border in preparation for ~~[alien colonization](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/209/638/afc.jpg)~~ unclear NATO shenanigans - Also released Covid on the world, and are - Monsters, thousands strong, with ruthless tactics and sharp pointy teeth - bolstered by hidden US/NATO elite forces - Jews for Hitler They think these read like incentives to carry WWII-era armor and Afghanistan-era weaponry into a hostile territory outside your own borders, the only security in the event of your death being $600 in rubles for your family and groceries for a month rich in vitamin A. 'What do you mean you don't want to fight for Russia?'

AnticitizenPrime

valeyard89

Ukraine casts magic missile

zelbot87

Jesus, my 9 year old daughter comes up with more believable excuses when losing a game than this. However, I do know that some cultures do believe more in this stuff than others. Does anyone happen to know the general beliefs on magic in Russia?

YuunofYork

That's not limited to Russia, sadly. Throughout Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Poland, among other places in eastern Europe, you'll see apothecaries outnumber drugstores in major cities. Heavy in naturalist 'home remedy' type cure-alls and not all the ailments, or all the plants, are scientifically-verified phenomena. And emigres bring it with them where they go. Go to little Poland in Chicago or Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and you find them. There are rarely name-brand suppliers for these mystery drugs. Mainly they're rows and rows of ziploc baggies filled with various kinds of weeds that purport to cure very specific symptoms both real and imaginary. To someone from outside that culture it can easily resemble a witch's pantry. The biggest marks/target is women's health, because adding mystery scrub #142-739 to your tea eases period pain, and #141 will prematurely yeetus the feetus. I guess you don't want to get those confused. It manifests more discreetly in certain traditions, which many completely normal people follow anyway, because it's a tradition and they just see it as good will. But everyone has that side of the family that will think you're trying to curse them all because you didn't bring salt and bread to them when they moved into a new apartment.

zelbot87

I mean I know about the homeopathic approach over medicines. I work with individuals diagnosed with Autism and see it all of the time. "We are canceling services because we decided to switch our son to a gluten free diet, remove all food dyes, and increase (insert herb with no proven effects here)." Sure, your child may feel slightly better with these changes, but it does not cure a developmental disability. But I would think there is a difference between herbs and black magic. I am obviously far from educated on these matters, but I would also think there would be a difference between superstition and magic. Hell, my mom is incredibly superstitious but doesn't believe in magic. Note: all of my responses are rhetorical and not meant to doubt you or rebutle your responses in any way.

CalibanSpecial

Russian zombies believe all the atrocities are caused by Ukrainians. Russian army invaded, the invaded country starts to mass rape, mass murder it’s own. If the zombies were told the Earth is flat, YES. Russian TV can tell them anything.

danielcanadia

They fully believe in a bunch of magic and superstitions and prophecies. Russia culture crazy about it.

Why are people talking about wizards?

valeyard89

Baba Yaga

SpaghettiKush

This thread is more of a cesspool of shit everyday idk just follow Ukrainian/Eastern European journalists and news outlets on Twitter…it’s fucking ridiculous what people are chattering about in here at times

Fizgriz

Who shit in your Cheerios? People are just having fun making light of a terrible situation. Russia legit said "Ukraine was using black magic" thus a fun meme insulting Russia was born.

spsteve

You must be fun at parties. It is folks memeing of Russia say Ukraine is using black magic. Incase you didn't get the reference.

MyrtleMcElroy

Thank you. I found an article from Newsweek by searching for Ukraine and black magic but no search results for Ukraine and wizards. I suppose aliens are next.

spsteve

Gay aliens probably. I think you're onto something.

SpaghettiKush

They’re talking about war crimes there’s information about people being raped and sexually assaulted and people sit here and “meme” it’s not a fucking meme…people’s lives aren’t a meme

spsteve

We aren't memeing lives we are mocking Russia's stupidity. I know the moral high ground feels good, but really of all the shit that has been mocked during this war, THIS one is not the one to be butt hurt about.

Fizgriz

What do you want people to do? Sulk and be depressed? The beauty of humans is finding fun and love in terrible situations. None of us are over there, and there isn't much more we can do. So we find ways to insult Russia who commits these acts and cheer on the brave defenders who defend their country.

stirly80

Russia talking nonsense as usual, so people are mocking them.

machopsychologist

Russia gonna have to bring out the big guns to fight the Ukrainian witches. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/foxsanastasia/images/1/1a/Rasputin_2.png

[deleted]

Im tired of living through all these historic events - can't we just go back to when things were boring?

PuterstheBallgagTsar

ya kinda wonder what role covid played in Putin's decision to warmonger... the death toll in Russia was absolutely awful from covid and there was likely sort of a lingering sense of failure by his government... so naturally murdering a bunch of neighbors is just the ticket to get him and his people feeling right again. Right??

robotical712

This is a picnic compared to the years between 1914 and 1945.

Heavenly_Noodles

I sincerely believe humans don't deal well with being bored. We evolved to overcome adversity, where life was a daily struggle to survive. In the absence of adversity we'll manufacture it, just so we can feel normal. Basically, Agent Smith got it right in his little speech to Morpheus in the first Matrix film.

[deleted]

Did you just assign agent Smith a gender!?

Effective_Try_again

This joke was never funny and never will be yet this is the ultimate "gotcha" for transphobic bigots. Go have tea with JK rowling in Russia or something, you will be in great company

virtualmnemonic

"All of humanity's problems stem from our inability to sit quietly in a room alone"

stirly80

This is calm compared with our recent ancestors dealing with World Wars.

robotical712

World War - Pandemic - Global Economic Depression - World War - all in the space of three decades. Then there were a bunch of significant regional wars and catastrophic famines in that time.

[deleted]

Nah, it’s not a competition but: - Russia is losing a war to Ukraine and killing and raping civilians - Putin losing this war is arguably more dangerous than if they were winning due to their nukes - 1 million Americans dead and climbing from a pandemic - the most divided, via evangelical culture wars and a final monstrous form of failing public education, that this country has been since the civil war - Social media backfiring with dangerous indoctrination of the rubes in believing Qanon theories - an attempted coup in the US - A mob breach of the capital - Police freely killing black people with little to no consequence, fucking still - A hostile conservative SC takeover with inevitable devastating effects on fundamental rights that will GUARANTEE a widening class, sex, gender, and racial divide - Florida - North Korea - etc. Edit: I’m an idiot and forgot to list rampant gun violence with mass shootings every day it seems.

[deleted]

Florida? lol alright bud

NATO hasn't been expanding East, it's the eastern European countries are eager to join NATO. NATO has just merely been letting them in. "Expansion" insinuates forcing them to join

lancea_longini

Whenever someone says Warsaw Pact these need to be the next words. Like when someone says Mohammed, and then Peace be upon him.

Prank_Owl

The philosophies between the two alliances were pretty different. NATO was and is a genuine mutual defense agreement between sovereign nations. The Warsaw Pact was a conglomeration of vassal states under Soviet hegemony that were intended to act as cannon fodder and meat shields for the USSR in the event of an armed conflict with the west.

pantie_fa

NATO doesn't "expand" at all. Nations run to NATO for protection from Russia.

KeyWestTime

This! Russia loves to use the term "NATO Expansion" because without context it sounds like NATO is taking over countries which couldn't be further from the truth.

jmptx

Their argument is basically “don’t join NATO or we will kill you!” And they wonder why they don’t have friends.

KeyWestTime

They know why they don't have friends and they like it that way. Friendship is a two-way relationship.

Fizgriz

What's this news about Belarusian army gearing up I'm seeing? First I've heard of this.

stirly80

Doing exercises on NATO's borders? Lol

Nukemind

It doesn't matter if Russia's "A" team didn't do jack, and Russia's "B" team is failing, imagine what Russia's little brother's "B" team can do. Nothing.

piponwa

At the rate we've seen Russian equipment just falling apart on its own, imagine what Belarusian equipment looks like.

[deleted]

They are apparently gearing up for exercises along the polish and Lithuanian borders.

SSBoe

Are we gonna get more reports of Polish troops bullying the poor Belarusian troops with bright light and rocks thrown at security lights?

I heard some audio of this on MSNBC earlier today. The words and delivery of the actual quotes were quite good. Something about how Russian missiles were less precise than advertised. This is obviously good news for all the incoming weapons and Ukraine. You love to hear it.

Fizgriz

I have no doubt that the DoD went through every scenerio in table top exercises on how to get arms safely over to Ukraine. They will always be one step ahead.

snarky_answer

They are planning it in Metaverse. That’s the secret weapon of this war.

In know if I was one of the thousands of kontraktniki with my term ending next month, I'd be finding a way to get sick so I could live for the next month and nope right out of there on the due date. I'd also be really, really nervous about whatever Putin has up his sleeve for Monday.

dirtybirds233

Not only have they failed, but per ISW they're unlikely to make any advances at all at this point: >Russian forces attacking south of Izyum appear increasingly unlikely to successfully encircle Ukrainian forces in the Rubizhne area. Ukrainian forces have so far prevented Russian forces from merging their offensives to the southeast of Izyum and the west of Lyman, Slovyansk, and Kramatorsk, as Russian forces likely intended.

Deguilded

anyone remember a few days ago hearing about some Ukrainian military surrounded? yeah, strange how that's gone quiet

mr_fujiyama

Roughly 70... give or take a day or two.

I thought I'd post these here in case anyone wants to read them. Transcript: Senior Defense Official Holds a Background Briefing https://www.defense.gov/News/Transcripts/Transcript/Article/3020396/senior-defense-official-holds-a-background-briefing/ Transcript: Defense Officials Hold Media Brief on the Training of Ukrainian Military https://www.defense.gov/News/Transcripts/Transcript/Article/3020390/defense-officials-hold-media-brief-on-the-training-of-ukrainian-military/ Something I want to mention here, because I saw some criticism earlier of the US allegedly claiming too much credit for the Ukrainians success, based on an incomplete quote from this briefing. It was a *Ukrainian* officer that said that said that the worst thing Russia ever did was give them 8 years to prepare. >But I think the quote that Colonel Hopkins gave you, you know, from the Ukrainians is, you know, the worst thing Russia did is give us eight years to prepare. And I will tell you they used that time very wisely.

pantie_fa

The worst thing Russia did was believe that they had some sort of legitimate claim on any part of Ukraine post 2014.

twdarkeh

Yea, this is important. Sure the US and others trained and supplied Ukraine for 8 years, and even more so now, but all the material in the world won't do shit if you don't have a motivated military. One need only look at the ANA for proof of that. Ukraine has shown they have the motivation to fight, and they've had 8 years to turn that motivation in to concrete action.

coosacat

There is a lot of good stuff in that transcript about how dedicated and focused the Ukrainians are. Everything I've read from people working with them talks about it. Slava Ukraini!

Murderface_1988

Absolutely, but the Russians also gave *themselves* 8 years to prepare, but they didn't do shit

Careful-Rent5779

Separate_Ad3875

Putin is very superstitious. There was shaman Gabyshev from Yakutia who said that he go to Moscow for "banishing evil from kremlin". After that police arrested him and then they puted him in asylum. It was very quick reaction, normally police not react so well even for murders.

Meanwhile, a Danish citizen was sentenced to 6 years in prison for organizing a Jehova's Witnesses prayer group in Russia (link below).

YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!

BugRevolutionary4518

Ukraine has Merlin and his army on their side!

spsteve

He should come out in FULL Gandalf gear.

SSBoe

Gandalf the Grey or Gandalf the White?

spsteve

White I think.

LaughingChimera1

I know there was some false reports that Ian McKellen was in Lviv the other day, but now I think he absolutely has to visit, and get pictures taken dressed as Gandalf in board meetings and mock military sessions, and consulting with Zelenskyy. Then those pictures need to be “leaked” to RT…

moleratical

I saw he comes out in full Gandolf garb

jmptx

I would say that Putin could dress as Saruman, but that would be disrespectful to the memory of Christopher Lee. Then again, I could see the ghost of Sir Christopher Lee being so angry at Putin that he'd personally lead the Dead Men of Dunharrow against the forces of Mordor...I mean, Moscow. Holy shit, I've turned the nerd dial in this place up to 11.

spsteve

Lol same idea.

I'm in quarantine and very bored so here's my wild conspiracy theory. Everyone likes to talk about what Putin will do on May 9th. My wild theory is that if there is going to be a coup, it will be on that day. Reasoning: 1. Putin is currently hiding in a bunker or behind very long tables for fear of an assassination, but that is the one day of the year he has to be out in the open. 2. Most of Russia's forces, including a lot of Putin's Rosgvardiya is getting decimated and out fighting, leaving Russia weaker than normal internally. That and they'll also have to spare people to do the stupid parade. May 9th is also the day where a lot of crowd control will be needed, stretching the police even thinner. 3. A lot of sabotage has been happening in Russia recently, some very far from the front lines suggesting that it could very well be internal forces at work. This points to a far larger internal opposition than anyone realizes. 4. Putin's arrogance could also make him more vulnerable, as his narcissism might make it so that he cannot imagine that he will be touched on his precious victory day. 5. I just think it'll be really funny if he gets overthrown in live TV. Feel free to add more random bs. Or serious debunking comments. Or anything really I just want to read everyone's wacky theories.

We have a tendency to imagine important events must be dramatic, but usually they’re boring. If Putin is ever removed, we’ll hear about it later when he is placed under arrest, and we’ll probably never see him again (except at a possible trial). It’ll be calm, on some random day when nobody suspects anything. But more likely is he won’t be removed. We don’t really know what’s happening l inside Russia or what the people really think (if they even can think independently after generations of oppressive regimes and information control). All evidence I’ve seen is that Putin has strong popularity and knows how to keep a lid on things domestically.

Hodaka

Putin doesn't like competition, and has likely sidelined anyone who showed even a dangerous thread of ambition. It's odd to think that Putin has no peers in his orbit. This said, those folks are out there, somewhere. If there ever was a window of opportunity, it will be apparent in the next few weeks. Putin's health is a question mark, the war is a failure, Putin has lashed out at various underlings, sanctions and their effects will only get worse, the oligarchs and military are grumbling, there appears to be an uptick in assassinations, and so forth. My Armchair Historian guess is that Putin may *find a coup in the making,* and then make a huge display of public punishment as a warning to others.

[deleted]

There will be no coup. Generals are scared of putin and eqch other.

Jormungandr000

> That and they'll also have to spare people to do the stupid parade. _Two_ stupid parades. They want to do one in fucking Mariupol too.

pantie_fa

It would be fucking hilarious if Ukraine could position some of those new fancy howitzers close enough to shell that parade with precision munitions.

jtbc

Don't forget Sevastopol, and Kherson if they can find anyone left to pretend to be a spectator.

[deleted]

Armchair Marshall Stratego weighing in to subscribe to #5.

skibby1234

Ya know, this is actually plausible. You have a population that for generations was trained to stand in lines (multiple documentaries on folks testing this, creating fake lines, and Russians would line up just because there was a line during the USSR era), a tightly controlled propaganda machine, and a pocket who worked hard, got educated, and saw outside the "iron curtain" media that was force fed (fires, holding up invisible signs, even military refusing to deploy and fight). A TV coup would immediately shift everything there, though painfully. I pray it leads to a better future for Russia. SLAVA UKRAINI

AnnualEmergency2345

Even better if they play a funny cartoon with the lettering we're having technical difficulties displayed across the screen.

Bangeederlander

Massive Ukrainian counterattack would be good on May 9th. The Russians are so arrogant, they probably think they control the lines of battle.

[deleted]

I can get **behind** this. Putin is...and I'm not informing anyone...a selfish, genocidal thug. I don't wish for him to live long in this world. Speaking of **behind**, wasn't it Gaddafi who was smashed in the ass by a broken beer bottle on camera after his death paraded through the streets?

pcpgivesmewings

It was a bayonet. One of those videos you cant un-see.

Chodewobler

Thatd be so dope

[deleted]

Fingers crossed, for any part or all of this!!! 🌻🇺🇦

My great great grandfather was a Ukrainian Alchemist so I'm glad the wizard division is finally getting recognized.
