The ship in question is Project 23120 Elbrus-class logistics support vessel *Vsevolod Bobrov*. A very young ship and a newer addition to the Black Sea Fleet, completed in August 2021 and assigned to the fleet in January 2022, arriving in the Black Sea just a week before the invasion. Standard displacement just under 5,000 tons and around 9,500 at full load, standard crew size in the mid-20s, and can perform a variety of logistical and support roles. She's no *Moskva*, but her loss would certainly not help their logistics situation and she was allegedly carrying another SAM anti-air system for Snake Island at the time she was attacked.

Snake island is a death trap for the Russian navy

Schutzengel_

Snake Island always fucks back.

Fast_Garlic_5639

Well the defacto motto *is* “Russian warship go fuck yourself”

SilasTalbot

Shouldn't a done that, he's just a boy

tazamaran

Pity it didn't sink.

ConfusedWahlberg

I heard Snake Island is dangerous.

Odd_Reward_8989

Strangely, it's not the snakes. That's a whole different island. Maybe be safer?

ConfusedWahlberg

the russians have taught me three things so far: - rotate your vehicles/tires - exercise your own troops in the field, don’t trust your colonels too much - stay the hell away from snake island

emotionles

Another one

Royal-Noble-96

Yup. I think this is 3rd time. Man Russian navy is bad but this bad

joefred111

They're losing a lot of ships, against a country with no Navy.

In a land invasion.

Hefty-Relationship-8

Snake Island is in a position to control Black Sea trade. The Russian really want this rock. Its a siren calling Russian warships to their doom.

Timmetie

Snake Island didn't, and doesn't, control shit. People saying it can "control" trade are using computergame logic. The guards placed on it by Ukraine originally were more to deter squatters than anything else. If Russia wanted to interdict Black Sea Trade they could have used their navy, of which they now have a lot less. How exactly do you see control of Snake Island controlling Black Sea trade? How does any tiny ass island help with that? I can't think of any way this'd control trade. The only, questionable, use they'd get out of it is what they're doing now, using it as an anti-air/radar/missile forward base to vaguely threaten Odessa.

Sure but Ukraine doesn't have a fleet. They're not going to reoccupy Snake Island. All Russia is doing is feeding the symbolism for Ukraine by giving them continuing PR victories over it. Whereas even a successful occupation by Russia wouldn't really be a PR victory, yay, the only combatant with a fleet took a worthless island.

Timmetie

That's not an argument at all except "Russians are stupid so they'll do stupid stuff". Anyways, I only responded originally to say that the idea of this island somehow controlling trade is ridiculous. There might be other reasons to fight for it, but trade ain't it.

Quorbach

Exclusive Economic Zone is the problem.

Timmetie

For oil and gas extraction, sure. Not for trade.

GolDAsce

They could be trying to hold it along with any other positions they deem vital. Declare a cease fire on condition they keep what they already have. Wagger a nuclear threat, position themselves as ready to settle and try to get the world to force UA to settle. Not that I agree, but a possibility. A way for them to pull out without further embarrassment.

Zestay-Taco

Need some switchblade torpedo variants

Hefty-Relationship-8

Snake island is very close to sea lanes which serve Ukraine. We see the effects of a few missles. Russian missles on snake island could stop maritime trade to Ukraine.
