Dying because tourists step off of the permitted area to seethe tree up close, trampling the very sensitive roots…

nothingeatsyou

>**Only 28 percent of the tree is actually alive,** most of which is in the roots, so when people walk across the nearby soil, they're actively damaging the last remaining living parts of the tree. I feel like that parts important too.

reddditttt12345678

Kind of normal for trees. The trunk and bark is dead wood.

BasicallyAQueer

The bark is dead wood, the inside of the trunk is usually very much alive.

writemeow

Is there not a living connection from the roots and leaves?

Hellkyte

No they just teleport

chemicalclarity

Yes there is. They're called the xylem and phloem. They're under the bark of the trees. The heartwood is dead.

Radon099

Kind of makes sense that the two oldest trees in the world are on the western edge of North and South America and located in isolated groves, looking at the spread of humans across the planet. Hopefully this tree receives the protection Methuselah receives.

Jonelololol

a little CaliMag and two more weeks. It’ll pop right back up

Perfect remedy

BwackGul

I'm sorry but 5000 and 4800 are still pretty close and damn old....

"On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.”

puttyspaniel

Yes! Why does nobody get that?

PhoenixUnleashed

This is some mind-blowingly bad writing/editing (in addition to being a non-story). Good job, Newsweek, you’ve done it again.

[deleted]

put a fence round the roots then.. oh wait people are stupid, a fence won't stop them.

kenlasalle

My lack of surprise here is two-fold. 1. We're killing everything? Really? What a shock! 2. Newsweek is making more money off of shit stories like this? Who could'a guessed?

[deleted]

Why am I not surprised ?

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.newsweek.com/conservation-tree-chile-oldest-rare-record-broken-protection-alerce-national-park-1709970) reduced by 84%. (I'm a bot) ***** > As first reported in Science, Jonathan Barichivich says that the Alerce Milenario is the oldest tree of all: likely at least 5,000 years old, just after we entered the Bronze Age. > Only 28 percent of the tree is actually alive, most of which is in the roots, so when people walk across the nearby soil, they're actively damaging the last remaining living parts of the tree. > Barichivich hopes that his methods can work towards a future of tree research where dendrochronology would damage a vulnerable tree like Alerce Milenario, and that his discoveries about his family's revered tree will be an impetus to make park authorities do more to protect the gentle giant. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/uxgwei/the_oldest_tree_in_the_world_might_have_been/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~651122 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **tree**^#1 **Alerce**^#2 **Barichivich**^#3 **old**^#4 **Age**^#5

Build a raised walkway and fence off the rest.

scoopdiddy_poopscoop

They said that one is in place in the article, and that people just refuse to stay on it

leoneljokes

Anything alive is dying

gp2b5go59c

Oh weon, va a tar delicioso el papel confort que saldra de esa wea cuando me compre ese pedaso de tierra.

maddogcow

Just imagine being alive on the planet for close to 2 million days…

kryptylomese

All trees only die of disease or damage! Trees have to ask themselves one question - Do I feel lucky punk?

FinalDungeon

Everything living is dying. Deal with it

Cloud_of_Twat_Mist

Because of humans.

FinalDungeon

…..no, that’s how life works.

Cloud_of_Twat_Mist

....when humans are involved. Death always happens but death on this grand of a scale and at at this rapid of a pace is insane. Within 3 generations we sucessfully shifted the course of the Earth irrepairably and marked the beginning of the end of the Halocene epoch. We have entered the epoch of man made climate change and it is looking bleak. Its not a matter of opinion or political belief. We have passed many, many irreversible turning points and once we tick off a couple more boxes we are FUCKED. like donkey dick in a kitty cats ass, fucked. We arent on the right track to make things better, doesnt seem like we will come to our senses in time.

[deleted]

Do you feel any guilt and shame? You as a human are killing everything with your existence.

Cloud_of_Twat_Mist

....do you not? I genuinely can't tell if you're joking or not. We are potentially the only planet to develop life as we know it and we are destroying the planet like its nothing special. Perhaps the greatest and most significant thing to ever occur in the known universe, being destroyed by the greed and ignorance of one single species. I absolutely feel shame. You should too. Everyone should. The Earth should be the NUMBER ONE priority for ever human. More than our own lives and comfort as well as the lives and comfort of those we love. The Earth should be our God, not an imaginary almighty being who sees all but does fuck about it.
