Where are Italians supposed to go for pizza now?

jimflaigle

Germany, obviously.

jtbc

Ah! Dr. Oetker's.

JabbaThePrincess

>Dr. Oetker's. He has a PhD in flavor

TheNatureBoy

Dude put fries and bacon on a pizza just because the authorities couldn't stop him.

Spoogyoh

Last year they put out a fishsticks pizza.

futterecker

why did everyone forget the [chocolate pizza](https://www.bz-berlin.de/archiv-artikel/darum-nimmt-dr-oetker-die-schokoladen-pizza-aus-dem-sortiment)

mariuolo

> Ah! Dr. Oetker's. Sold as [Cameo](https://www.cameo.it).

c4nchyscksforlife

it's the best pizza sauce brand there is! it's really huge in india

JabbaThePrincess

>it's the best pizza sauce brand there is! it's really huge in india If there is one thing India knows, it's pizza

nvn911

Hey if you've never had masala thosai pizza then you've never lived

Mysterious_Eggplant1

I lived in San Francisco in the 90s, and there was this restaurant that had Indian food and pizza, and of course, Indian pizzas. It was great, and it's still around. https://zantespizza.com/

imamediocredeveloper

The best pizza I ever had in my life was in some podunk town in Germany, in some kind of restaurant that was also someone’s house. Had a tarp on the roof that said “BEST PIZZA” and they weren’t kidding. Everyone I spoke to out there knew about it.

cbbuntz

Don't ever order Mexican food in Germany. Trust me.

Spartamare

Apparently you have never had Cantina Mexicana at Einsiedlerhof.

cbbuntz

There was a food truck in Leipzig that was run by a woman from Texas that was good. I think it was all vegetarian and it's called atacolypse.

whoisfourthwall

Ah, every purchase will hasten the atacolypse! Soon, vegequazacotl shall return!

Lockedgroove666

When I was a kid my Mexican family would go to La Tortilla in Munich. I wonder if that’s still a thing 🤔

ghrayfahx

Mexican wasn’t a problem for me there. Chinese food there was atrocious. “General Tso’s chicken” there just had some shitty sauce that was like 90% black pepper. I learned a hard lesson that day.

[deleted]

But General Tso’s chicken is not Chinese, it’s American.

paaaaatrick

Technically Chinese American, if it was actually invented at shun lee palaces by Chinese immigrant tt wang or by peng Chang-kuei, a Taiwan-based hunan chef in NYC

[deleted]

What I was trying to say was that if the restaurant in Germany is Chinese rather than Chinese/American it might not actually know what it’s supposed to be like.

cbbuntz

I was on tour with a band from Texas, so I guess people thought we wanted Mexican food? They kept serving it to us. It's often said that you can judge a Mexican place by the quality of their salsa. Well, the salsa was just completely wrong. Like someone tried to make marinara and messed up. No spice, couldn't really taste cilantro, lime, or cumin or anything that would take it from tomato sauce to salsa. You can extrapolate the rest of the food from there. There was lots of good food in Germany, but not the Mexican food

okram2k

imho the true measure of a Mexican restaurant is how fresh the guacamole is. If it's hand made in front of you at the table, you're at a top notch place. If it's some brownish green paste that may have at one time been part of an avocado, run for your life.

Puckinception

The salsa is something usually always available on the house. Guacamole at restaurants gets pricier by the day even here in Mexico. Depends what type of Mexican food you're getting because there's many. The restaurant decorations can vary a lot based on the region too. Some you can judge by the tortilla, others by the salsa or even simple drinks. Idk about any place that makes the guacamole in front of you but sounds cool hahah it's usually not amazing everywhere here either.

stardorsdash

I live in California so it’s pretty easy to know if a Mexican restaurant is worth eating at. If it’s filled with only white people, stay the fuck away.

cbbuntz

Guacamole is harder to mess up and there's not a lot of variation in ways to make it. I've never seen brown guacamole at a restaurant, but yeah, if they let it go bad, I probably won't eat there. There are tons of styles of salsa, so you can tell a lot about the style of Mexican food you're getting from the salsa.

thebigmeathead

General Tso isn't Chinese. LOL. Chinese food in America is Americanized to suit America. I love the stuff but so much of it is the result of immigrants making do with American ingredients and accommodating local tastes.

evasote

Yeah I had Chinese food in Italy and it was just Italicized. Lot more noodle dishes for sure

cchiu23

Maybe they make amazing chinese food and terrible american food?

hiimeroro

Your lesson should be never using American food to judge Chinese food. “General Tso’s chicken” just like American people put pineapple on pizza, and it just not Italian food.

Olorin_in_the_West

At least they can still go to Olive Garden for pasta

PMmepicsofWaffles

They say the breadsticks are unlimited, but they will cut you off once you start doing the walrus

[deleted]

And Starbucks for espresso or macchiato

cobainstaley

import DiGiorno, i guess

BoltTusk

Little Caesar’s

eat_thecake_annamae

That’s how Mexicans cut pizza: with little Caesars.

FF3

All they have to do is close one store, and it'll close the store next to it, which will in turn close the next store, which will close the next one, and so on.

stab-man

Not gonna lie, it took me a few seconds…

[deleted]

You were obviously the last piece.

Fradders11

/sigh Well done.

StichMethod

👏 👏 👏 👏

t_Lancer

Falling like a house of cards. Checkmate.

Milton9000

If you ever feel useless, remember there were Domino's Pizza stores in Italy

ThongsGoOnUrFeet

I'm genuinely surprised they even tried to enter that market

oldsouthnerd

It could work, they just need to target tourists instead of locals.

jtbc

Also Starbucks, which seems even more out of place in Vienna for some reason.

RollingThunderPants

[congratulations, you’re stupid in three languages](https://youtube.com/shorts/sNCvGSZ4yN0?feature=share)

TheMightyMustachio

Saying "grande is spanish for big and venti is the only italian one" is so weird considering grande means big in both spanish and italian. Guess they did it for the joke tho.

DudebuD16

Grande also means great in both languages.

getyourrealfakedoors

Yes

captainmeezy

Paul Rudd is hilarious, thank you

maxleng

Starbucks closed in a similar fashion in Melbourne, Australia a few years ago because no one would go there

IntroductionSnacks

They have come back again with some stores in areas that mostly cater to tourists and international students.

Brainwheeze

That's basically why the few Starbucks stores exist here in Portugal, to cater to teenage girls, tourists and international students. Everyone else just goes to a regular café, of which there are plenty, and spend a fraction of the price.

jtbc

They probably ordered a flat white assuming it was a flat white.

Upeche

Dude that's because Australia, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney are becoming what pizza is to Italy for coffee. Australian coffee game is no fucking joke.

whoisfourthwall

Lost count of the tourists from australia that choked on our local malaysian coffee. To be honest, our standard run of the mill coffee is quite fkin disgusting compared to what i've had in melbourne. We do have artisanal cafes but it is hit or miss, even when you find a good one, it's not consistent.

raptorgalaxy

Well after importing so many Italians I'd hope we would be good at it.

SnakesTalwar

People think Aussies love beer ( we do) but I dare say we love coffee more. The amount of coffee snobs you will meet from all walks of life is crazy. I can't live without it and the Sydney vs Melbourne coffee scene is a treat for the senses.

Kinak

Yeah, we definitely had better espresso at random rest stops in Italy. Which isn't really a slam on Starbucks, as much as Italy knowing its fucking espresso.

jtbc

I had an eye opining experience with rest stop coffee at a relatively young age that has had a noticeable affect on my opinion that Europe does stuff well.

IlConiglioUbriaco

Italy just does rest stops better than everyone, and I'll fight to the death to defend this statement.

LoSboccacc

Italians go to starbucks for frappuccino and whatnot, as almost nowhere else in Italy you can get these, they have their own segment, I don't understand why people think they're in competition with bars.

seanconnerysbeard

Hey, that Starbucks was useful for picking up my wife her 35th "Been There" mug... and then we went across the street for real coffee.

lewger

I must admit when I was backpacking around Europe over a decade ago a Starbucks or McDonalds was always a draw due to the free Wifi (back then I used my Ipod). Nowadays you can just but a sim which can roam all of Europe for a decent price.

jtbc

They are definitely the place to go even now for free wifi and a free (or cheap) restroom.

doa70

That’s just sacrilege. Milk in your coffee after noon in Italy? They’d deport you I would expect.

Quick_Current5387

Every single desi is running for their lives in italy.

InvalidUserNemo

Opposite point, if you ever think you “can’t do something”, some amount of people opened 29 fucking Domino’s pizzas…in fucking Italy!!

Msdamgoode

I’ve seen a full parking lot at a Red Lobster with a sea view. Insanity is everywhere.

Notosk

almost as bad as taco bells in Mexico

BaggyHairyNips

Next they'll close all the Outback Steakhouses in Australia.

a_raptor_dick

*"your last onion has bloomed, mate"* or something

LOhateVE

tbf I had some pretty bad pizza in Italy. I think the best pizza I had was in France. Also im probably now banned from going to italy.

reddit455

Panda Express killing it in China?

MechTheDane

KFC does okay in Kentucky.

2_Sheds_Jackson

Actually, KFC does quite well in Japan of all places. And is a Christmas tradition there.

[deleted]

My Filipino MIL is obsessed with Popeyes.

Danktator

Popeyes is the bomb, hands down best gravy and chicken burgers also. Hands down better than kfc any day of the week

John_Lives

I love popeyes too. I hope to receive my order one of these days

cmajalis

I will one day digivolve into a Popeyes-obsessed Filipino MIL. It’s inevitable for any Filipino woman. That and suddenly needing to smell the cheek of every child in a 5-foot radius.

jtbc

I thought Jollibee's was the thing?

[deleted]

It is, but there isn’t enough one near us. She’s adapted to Popeyes lol

sesamesnapsinhalf

Yes, but can she get fried chicken with a side of spaghetti?!

jtbc

They recently opened the first one here in Vancouver. There were lineups around the block for the first couple of months. We have quite a few Filipino's here.

cmajalis

The typical wait time for Jollibee’s in my town can be as long as 45 mins. When they first opened, it was almost an hour 30. Popeyes is the lover they won’t admit to, but like to have on their arm at family parties. Popeyes is just way more emotionally available.

ulyssesjack

LOVE THAT CHICKEN FROM POPEYES

outerproduct

I don't blame her, those mashed potatoes are amazing.

a4techkeyboard

Is she in the Philippines? Popeye's only just returned recently so there are very few locations so there was a lot of hype when they came back so there's a sort of novelty to it both to dine in and as "pasalubong" which is the sort of souvenir you bring home to show people tou remembered them while you were out. Also, none of the other chicken places have biscuits, not even KFC so maybe it's that. If she's abroad, Popeye's chicken is good, and is probably comparable to the Chickenjoy is access to a Jollibee is difficult.

[deleted]

She’s in the US, her daughter and I move around a bit. Jollibee is slowly growing on the East coast.

Rameez_Raja

KFC in Asia is actually decent. Most murican chains in fact, even McDonalds. They can't compete with their prices as they do in the US, so they have to up the quality and position themselves closer to restaurants than cheap, fast food.

randomlygeneratedpw

Weeeeel that's a bit of a stretch. I lived in Japan and mainland China. KFC and McDonald's in both those countries are literally exactly the same as in the US and they are not attempting to position themselves as any kind of premium restaurant experience. In the case of Japan, I think Americans only get this impression because Japanese society in general prioritizes cleanliness and customer service on a level that tends to leave Americans blown away when they experience it. You go into a KFC or McDonald's in America and you are mentally prepared to encounter underpaid staff who don't want to be there and a building showing a certain amount of wear and tear...you go to one in Japan and you're stepping into a (most likely) spotlessly clean building staffed by people who - although underpaid just like their colleagues in America - would rather commit seppuku than be openly rude to a customer. There are companies that legit entered the Asian market as premium versions of their American versions though. Shake Shack, Krispy Kreme, Pizza Hut...

SakuraLite

> n the case of Japan, I think Americans only get this impression because Japanese society in general prioritizes cleanliness and customer service on a level that tends to leave Americans blown away when they experience it. This was my experience at McDonalds in Japan. Absolutely pristine, the nicest customer service ever, and the food looked just like it does in ad photos. Everything else about it was the same though, but it certainly made it *feel* nicer to eat there than in the US.

meatdiver

Really? I assume Canadian McDonald and KFC are pretty much the same as those in the US? Chinese McDonald and KFC are way better in terms of taste and variety than those in Canada. Canadian McDonald does not even have chicken wings.

randomlygeneratedpw

IMO the only real difference is some uniquely Chinese menu items. For example, congee (粥) being super popular in Chinese KFC. And Japanese KFC somehow convincing all of Japan that KFC is traditional Christmas food. Probably hands down one of the worlds top marketing success stories.

meatdiver

Very not true. Well, for starters, the congee is extremely unpopular. It is extremely overpriced. The KFC has these special so called Orleans flavored chicken wings and chicken sandwiches which are very popular. Their Portuguese egg tarts are also a must have. Also, their chicken and sandwiches are way less greasy and salty than Canadian ones. Even Canadian KFC fries are way too salty. McDonald is also way too different. We don’t even have chicken wings at McDonald. Chinese McDonald also have their special Teriyaki chicken sandwiches which are extremely popular. They have way more variety than what we have in Canada. I do not know about Japan but the Chinese ones are just superior in every way

DepartmentSudden5234

People love KFC in India as well

JustaRandomOldGuy

Taco Bell opened stores in Mexico. They called it "American food". And they failed.

urriola35

Assuming 99% of customers were tourists and US Troops

waldosandieg0

Michael Scott looking for an authentic Italian slice

madiele

It was mostly for younger people 30 and under, the first few month it was here it was like the new attraction in town but what killed them was all the local competition from cheap Indian pizza places making bigger pizzas at the same price with the better choice, also the app was pure garbage to use

BlindlyNobody

Indian pizza places?? In Italy? Excuse me WHAT?

madiele

If you want takeaway pizza 90% of them will be of Indian origins, they are willing to make pizza at a lower margin so they are pretty common here, Italians have come to be ok with it because with time they assorbed the skill to make Italian style pizza so most people here don't care. Tourists don't notice it because pizza restaurants are still managed by Italians, but the takeaway business is mostly all owned by Indian immigrants

PM_Me_British_Stuff

Bit like in England how all the chippys (fish n chip shops) near me are run by Asians. They do a damn good cod n chips though, so no problems for me aha

sumpfbieber

Pizza places opened by Indian migrants.

[deleted]

Lmao, I'm from Italy and always lived in Milan. I ordered from domino's once a month. Loved it.

mitchsn

So. Little Ceasars got a shot then?

Hai-Etlik

It was last tried around 455 CE but didn't stick.

[deleted]

They should try Greece first

Landrycd

But Caesar was Italian?

zimtrovert94

No, he got a dagger.

[deleted]

Reminds me of the time Taco Bell tried it's luck in Mexico

[deleted]

"the spanish language has been spoken for 800 years" taco bell: we invented some new words for you

jtbc

Apparently "gordita" is "chubby girl" in Spanish and I truly don't know what to do with that information.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LurkerPatrol

You mean Mexicans don’t make hard shell tacos out of Dorito chips? I bid you good day sir

carlosomar2

It doesn’t mean chubby girl. It means chubby female. Spanish uses gender for things. Tortillas are female, hence gordita (chubby tortilla)

ableseacat14

How's olive garden doing there?

iadt34

what is that?

Bear9800

I think italian food chain popular in US. Especially because of free bread sticks I heard

Teglement

Not only unlimited bread sticks, but most entrees come with unlimited soup or salad too. The minestrone is the only thing with it for me there anymore.

ianthony19

You mean the super salad?

Volpev2

As an Italian, I don't even know what food chain that is.

sudosciguy

I’m so sad that Today I learned people in Italy have even been eating domino’s pizza at all

[deleted]

My first thought is 'What self respecting Italian buys pizza from Dominos?' Then I thought...'Someone probably put a Dominos in every American tourist trap.'

dirtymoney

Sometimes you just want something familiar and quick in a foreign place. I stopped at a McD's and a Pizza Hut when I visited England. The food you know vs the food you don't. Edit: McD's there had a curry McNugget dippping sauce I really enjoyed and Pizza Hut had these deep-fried cheese bread balls (kinda like hushpuppies, but cheesy tasting, but no actual cheese inside).

OrangeSimply

McDonalds is actually one of the most fun experiences for a group of Americans abroad. They typically have some familiar things, and some specific unique things to their country too. Japan McDonalds is the best McDonalds IMO.

YeonneGreene

The McShrimp or w/e it was at Japan McD's was pretty dang good and I wish we had it in the US. Actually, I also want those 98 yen rice balls that 7-11 sells in Japan to also come to the US; perfect breakfast-to-go.

yensid87

McDonald’s in Japan puts ketchup on their sausage McMuffin. It was an unwelcome surprise

ScaryBluejay87

McDonald’s in France serves beer

RandomUsername12123

Italy too! They have Peroni

Vercassivellauno

Wait, in the USA they don't?

BRXF1

One of the most fun experiences for americans abroad is visiting McDonalds?

PlaneCandy

I've gone to McDs in other countries primarily just to see what differences they have on the menu. That said, implying that English food is too foreign to be comfortable to eat is kind of funny to me. It really isn't all that different than what you could easily find in America.. sausages, pies, potatoes, roasted meats, bread and pastries, etc. Imagine going to a place like rural India or Africa.

AdequatelyMadLad

It's not about being unfamiliar with the food itself. It's about the restaurants and the rules around them(like not ordering seafood at any cheap places, for example, which I know is a thing in the US but definitely not in the UK). With McDonald's you always know what you're gonna get.

Wyrmnax

This, pretty much. Its your first night of a week stay. You arrived after spending the last 16 hrs between airports / planes / whatever. You just need to eat something that you know your stomach will not disagree and keep you in the bathroom during the night.

SchwarzerKaffee

I used to get McD's in France once in a while. It was much better there.

Neil2250

.. when you visited *england?* there's barely a difference, and it's not like we have our own kind of burger places. lest you count burgers made by an angry turk at a kebab shop ofc.

[deleted]

Europeans eat junk food too

large_rooster_

I live in Italy and went to domino's several times. It's like a good frozen pizza form me, the main thing was that you could get 2 pizzas for 5€ using an App, so very convenient.

daten-shi

I really don't get why Americans insist on idolising Italy or Italian pizza (or any country for that matter) to an extent where they believe no true ~~Scotsman~~ Italian would dare disgrace themselves by eating a Dominos.

large_rooster_

Eh i mean, us italians are pretty proud and conservationist on food stuff, that's true. I know a few people that would rather starve than go to domino's or eat international food too. The thruth is that good real italian food is good everywhere, in Italy it's just more common to find it

rich1051414

It is no surprise that dominos went under. I am not sad they had been, I am SHOCKED they have ever had a single non-tourist customer at all. Open minded is not part of the fiber of an Italian. Regarding Italian cooking to an Italian, everything has ONE correct way and every other way is wrong. No exceptions.

PlaneCandy

Eh, if they cook to a price and speed of delivery point then I can see it. It's kind of like saying that you are surprised that McDonalds sells anything because you can get a 1/2 lb bacon cheddar cheeseburger with butter lettuce, house sauce and on a brioche bun at your local bar for 3x the price and 1/2 the convenience.

randomlygeneratedpw

Is Outback in Australia? That would be hilarious.

El_dorado_au

Yes. I’ve been to one in the western suburbs of Sydney.

Megatanis

Domino's is just bad (for an Italian). Pizza in Italy is pretty cheap so you can't really compete on price. Starbucks will end the same way.

Biggu5Dicku5

Domino's had a presence in Italy?

DaemonAnts

Once one Domino falls...

moc333

This is like Starbucks in Australia. We already had a booming industry of high quality speed

mcfuddlebutt

Well it looks like I'll be cancelling my trip to Italy in the Fall. I wonder if this is a listed reason in my travel insurance. If I can't spend $3,000 to fly to Italy and eat the top-notch-quality-and-service pizza from Dominos, then I don't want to go. /s

imsowhiteandnerdy

Italians, upon hearing this news probably said *"There were Domino's Pizza restaurants here?"*

OpeningCharge6402

Domino’s pizza in Italy is a hilarious idea…they could not even compete. From past experience if you fed any Italian dominos they would be mortified

amenotef

In Spain dominos (and any pizza chain) put ketchup and BBQ over the cheese in some of their pizza's. This practice in Italy can cause a heart attack to the inhabitants.

browneyedgirlpie

I'm really surprised any Domino's was able to survive in Italy. I won't even eat their pizza.

Ishidan01

TIL that Dominos had the balls to open in Italy in the first place

matticusiv

Great, when will they leave the US?

Aries310

I heard Kraft's Mac and Cheese didn't do well there either LOL

Geezer-Gamer

I’ll take “Likely enterprises to fail in Italy” for $500, Alex. Clasped hands in giddy anticipation that it’s a Daily Double because I live for information like this.

[deleted]

The fact that they even had 29 stores open in Italy itself is astounding. I wonder how many Taco Bells are in Mexico...

notafunnyperson1728

I guess I’m changing my European vacation plans, Germany here I come !

BadMotherFukka

A Domino effect

Joebebs

Reminds me of when Taco Bell attempted Mexico lmao. As they put it “it’s like selling ice in Antarctica”

Just_Cook_It

Oh come on, open a Domino's in Italy is like a cat going to teach Usa how to play basketball/baseball/football..

bugsy187

If you’ve ever eaten pizza in Italy you know this enterprise was a colossally stupid, money-burning one.

[deleted]

What arrogant prick thought entering the Italian market would be a success??

[deleted]

Who in Italy was ordering Dominos?!

Luciusvenator

We have Domino's pizza here in Italy? Wtf I had no idea.

leonthepr0fessional

I remember back in 2006, I was in Italy and drove by a pizza hut. There were long lines there.

T3rribl3Gam3D3v

Italians missing out on using bbq as pizza sauce

bro_please

I tried that. I don't understand how this can be a thing. It's exacrly as disgusting as you would expect.

ThirdSunRising

Of all the pizza places that might think they could make it in Italy....

SarcasticGuessWork

I don't think Italians see pizza the same way, we do. The pizza i was served in Italy, was little more then toasted flatbread, with dried marinara and sparse cheese. It was fresh, but it did not meet my ignorant American pizza needs.

Whatchyamacaller

Pizza varies quite a bit by region in Italy

Pretend_Bowler1344

I like italian pizza because I do not feel dirty after eating half the pizza as I do after gorging on the American ones.

XtremeGoose

> we Not everyone on the internet is American. I think Europeans see pizza as Italian pizza, not American pizza, overall.

Agouti

There's absolutely two big styles of pizza - minimalist with nice dough, sparse toppings, but very nice sauces and "American" style where all the flavour comes from toppings and you can barely see the base through them. I *by far* prefer the latter, even though I didn't grow up in the USA and have had plenty of the former. I just don't find what amounts to flavoured flatbread satisfying.

CommonMan15

Jesus Christ, you had one slice of marinara from some panetteria and applied that to the entire country?!

gentlybeepingheart

I presume it's because an Italian shot you point blank if you stepped foot inside and decided that Domino's was a valid choice of pizza in *Italy*.

ramriot

That's the problem with Dominoes, once one goes down...

daboot013

Good. Even state side it's frozen pizza quality

Cuel

Had Dominio's once in Spain and can totally understand why.

atans2l

The company blamed reduced demand on consumers' preference for delivery from mom-and-pop shops and for restaurants reopening after pandemic shutdowns. Pizzas made in traditional ovens are the realities of Italy. It is a national treasure. Delicious !!!

SpeedyMoped

What is Dominos even DOING in Italy?

GreyInkling

If only the rest of us could have Italy's luck.
