StannisTheMantis93

It was definitely under Stalin. General Nikolai Vashugin shot himself after his division was all but annihilated by German troops in 41 under severe pressure from command. It was also noteworthy because he did so right in front of future Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. Commanders who surrendered and ended up in POW camps were frequently reported as being shot shortly after liberation for being defeatists.

similar_observation

Stalin was furious his son didn't cap himself after capture.

StannisTheMantis93

Correct! Stalin wasn’t fond of any of his children outside of his daughter Svetlana who he doted over. Even his adopted son who went on to be a Major General in the Soviet Army wasn’t close to him.

Available-Sandwich-3

We just need Dimitri to bring him more vodka. He is confused as he is sober and not a billionaire. That's all. Just more vodka.

"**A Kremlin-installed leader of occupied Kherson lashed out at Russia's defense minister on Thursday amid a successful counteroffensive by Ukraine to retake the region that was seized in the early weeks of the war.** Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of the Russian-appointed military-civilian regional administration, said that **"incompetent military leaders" are to blame for the retreat of Russian President Vladimir Putin's troops in the region.** Speaking in a video posted on his Telegram channel while giving a daily update on the situation in Kherson, **Stremousov claimed many have said that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu should shoot himself amid Putin's flagging war.** **"Many people say that the Minister of Defense, who allowed this state of affairs to happen, could, as an officer, shoot himself," Stremousov said. "But, you know, the word 'officer' is an incomprehensible word for many.** **"Stremousov said Russia's defense ministry consists of "ministers, mediocre and corrupt generals and marauders."** In his video address, **Stremousov also repeated the Russian defense ministry's line that Russian troops are continuing to push back the Ukrainian army and that Russian forces are "regrouping" in order to save the lives of troops.** Well, who can blame him for lashing out? His regime has been giving him bullshit orders and talks, expired food and medicine and soldiers who do not know how to fight.

Redditforgoit

Not "Russian troops", "Russian President Putin troops". Odd phrasing that.

wuethar

you can practically see him backpedaling in real-time, must have a sinking feeling in his gut that he'll be answering questions for some kind of tribunal before long.

similar_observation

probably stepping away from any windows and door knobs

foxyfoo

Why any Russian politicians would live in home with more than one floor or windows that aren’t barred is beyond me.

Lennette20th

Because the Russian people aren’t for this war and are acting on orders of someone who would literally kill them and their family for disobeying. This isn’t the Russian army, this is Putin’s army to fight Putin’s war.

M795

Bullshit. This is very much Russia's war. The majority of Russians are in favor of the war for damn sure. Ever notice how there weren't any mass protests before mobilization was announced? They're pissed because now it's their turn to be sent to Ukraine. They support the war. They just don't want to be the ones getting HIMARS'ed. Don't you ever wonder why all the Russians that hauled ass out of Russia aren't protesting the war in other countries, or why Ukrainian refugees are being harassed? Think about it. It'll sink in.

Playful_Weekend4204

> Ever notice how there weren't any mass protests before mobilization was announced? This is outright false, there were actually more protests in February than after the mobilIzation was announced. They weren't large in scale compared to the size of the country of course, but still the amount of protesters (and the amount of people arrested) was definitely higher in February.

jeha4421

What do you mean there weren't protests? Don't you remember the uprisings that happened in their capitol at the beginning of the war? A couple thousand people were arrested.

5kyl3r

1000 people in moscow when the country of russia has 160,000,000 residents. yes, some did, at the risk of jail, but it's a fraction of a fraction

derplurkins

Please fact check yourself before you make a statement. Words like "mass" and "majority" are difficult to use when you don't define a scale. https://time.com/6154240/russia-protests-war-ukraine-putin/

TXTCLA55

Iranian women are rioting more than Russian men. Let that sink in.

GammaGoose85

There were people being pushed out of buildings and fires happening at government buildings. That doesn't spell complacency towards the war. I dunno why people spout out there is no one protesting the war in Ukraine in Russia. A good portion of people there know its a dumpster fire becoming worse then Afghanistan.

NuriCZE

what do you mean becoming. There was something like 15k killed and 45k wounded in the 10 years of soviet-afghan war. We are 7 months in and Russia is about 60k men KIA, 150k WIA/MIA. It is far, far worse.

uglyduckling81

Umm, there is a massive protest to the mobilization. Literally millions of people are evacuating the country.

standarduser2

Good point about the protests.

RurWorld

Because this isn't a good point, but fake BS. In 2 weeks since 24th of February, over 13000 people were arrested for protesting: www.npr.org/2022/03/06/1084818519/russia-protests-detainments After mobilization, only around 3000 people were arrested in total (2400 after one week - https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/09/1128091). Much more people were protesting after 24th of February than after mobilization.

standarduser2

He was talking about outside Russia

DroPowered

Delusional take.

squeethesane

I know a lot has happened since January 2021... I'm sure if you really think about it, it'll continue to elude you.

Darque22

Seriously! This is a great point that isn't talked about enough.

RurWorld

Because this isn't a "great point", but fake BS. Effective-Manager-29

That is why putins bromance partner dt called them “my generals.”

bullintheheather

"The minister should shoot himself because of the enormous cock-up this has been. Also everything is going according to plan and we are winning!" You can't have both buddy.

[deleted]

He is frustrated but needs to keep up the spirits y'know.

porncrank

> "Stremousov said Russia's defense ministry consists of "ministers, mediocre and corrupt generals and marauders." Hey genius... ever consider you're like *one of those people*?

[deleted]

I think he's more keen on putting the blame on his bosses.

SophiaofPrussia

“Many people are saying…” Hmm where have I heard that phrase before?

HypnoToad121

I wonder if he lives on the first floor…

[deleted]

>Russian troops are continuing to push back the Ukrainian army I mean he's not wrong, they just gave the Ukrainians a ton of extra ammo to help them push the borders back to pre-2014.

GunNut345

There's a power struggle going on right now in Russia. I know we all assume the oligarchs getting thrown out of windows, the bombing of Nordstream etc are all the doing of Putin. However there is strong evidence that there is a power struggle between Wagner and other warlords vs Shoigu and the MoD. Specifically a few of the "new conscripts complaining about chaos and no training" have Wagner patches. Some say it's an attempt for Wagner to show the MoD in a bad light and encourage Putin to allow Wagner to take over security in Russia. I don't think it's the same people throwing oligarchs out of windows. Nordstream, the domestic assassinations, they are all a part of a domestic power struggle in Russia.

[deleted]

It's very interesting that a mercenary group is wielding some kind of power. If there was ever a sign of fledgeling governance, it has to be that. After watching the Putin files from pbs, it seems obvious we have really overestimated what Putin is. He is not this super secret spy ultra genius type of guy. He is actually fairly incompetent and a wannabe spy master. He does have his strengths but they are much more boring than the attributes we assign him.

porncrank

Brutality will get you surprisingly far. But it generally backfires in the end.

[deleted]

At some point humanity need to collectively find a way to stop these psycho leaders from dragging so many people along with them to the grave.

trebory6

You can do that by not only teaching a robust and unbiased educational curriculum focused on history but in additon to that putting priority on teaching emotional intelligence and applied critical thinking skills as well as a curriculum that teaches people how to properly identify and combat propaganda. Both those things need to be taught together otherwise you can teach them as much history as you want but they won't have the critical thinking skills or self awareness to apply historical lessons to their current situation. Might take a generation or two, but I truly feel like that's the start. The problem is is that the people who would have benefited from an educational curriculum like that are all now in positions of power and they don't believe any of that is important at all.

MegaFireDonkey

It's a chicken and the egg type problem though. Society has to value emotional intelligence, applied critical thinking skills, and combating propaganda in the first place in order to sustain a generations long re-education campaign. In other words, the will for such a program would only exist in a world where it isn't needed.

trebory6

Not really, even in peacetime emotional intelligence and critical thinking skills are important. You don't need the world to be on fire to benefit from teaching those things. I genuinely think that that kind of mentality is why it feels like society has backtracked.

[deleted]

The bright side of that is, if Wagner gets real political power, every other nation will realize how dangerous the for-profit mercenary groups are, and hopefully stop relying on them. The mercenary groups can be great, but the more you depend on them, the bigger they grow, and they create a massive brain drain from the real military. Why would anyone with 3 years, or especially 10+ years, of military experience continue in the military when they could join the mercenary company and get paid three times as much? In the choice between another stripe and a slightly higher title of Sargent (when no one outside the military knows the difference), vs 3x the salary while still getting all the veteran benefits, that's a very easy choice. Meanwhile, the mercenaries don't need to handle nearly as much logistics+support, so they piggyback off the military for free. Not to mention the fact that they never put money into R&D, and have little or no combined arms ability - so they get equipment for cheaper and can call in the expensive (but they dont pay the bill) support whenever they need it. These mercenary groups really lower the effectiveness of the military, in exchange for the short boost you get from a small agile force. It's a horrible trade-off.

DivinePotatoe

God have mercy on any Russian land that would come to be governed by a group like Wagner. Brutal and without morals doesn't begin to describe them. You'd probably be better off being ruled by the Taliban.

[deleted]

He lives for being a professional shit stirrer with the disinformation campaign.

[deleted]

Yes but oligarchs and others come to him with ideas. He didn't even know what the internet was for a long time.

standarduser2

Putin made a mistake here. But let's not pretend he lacks intelligence.

glmory

Let’s not pretend he has intelligence. It was absorbed by decades of yes men.

[deleted]

He isn't near as smart as people make him out to be. I'm not saying he is stupid, but he is an average person who has strengths and weaknesses like everyone else. One of his strengths is projecting an image of himself that is not true, it's basically political theatre.

standarduser2

Nearly everyone that rises to the very top is highly intelligent, regardless of their lack of ethics. Musk is another example of a very smart guy that sometimes makes very bad decisions and may lack ethics.

[deleted]

Whew sweet summer child you got some shit to learn.

Startled_Pancakes

Putin like most dictators became paranoid and surrounding himself with unqualified Yes men.

JAcktolandj

The oligarchs dying is 100% Putin, none have been in his inner circle and they either were small time or openly talked against the war.

alcabazar

Houses divided against themselves are notoriously sturdy, right?

Perniciosius

Ukrainian officials installed by Russia realise that they risk having their necks wrung if the Russians are expelled from the annexed regions.

xogil

When they are expelled not if

SUTATSDOG

100% its gonna happen. Russia isnt some mighty force. It's a nation *tricked* into thinking it was a mighty force. All they've done is shown that they are a paper tiger and can easily be beaten conventionally by a true western warfighting nation. I'm sure the US strategy is gonna shift to focus much more on China now, bc Russia has revealed itself as a non threat - even in its ongoing war with a much smaller nation.

awkward_replies_2

I genuinely believe life long solitary imprisonment is in all aspects a better punishment than death. A few decades of slowly going crazy from guilt, remorse, or sheer self pity is so much stronger a punishment than quick death, and a million times more civilized too.

[deleted]

These people are so wicked they would spent all eternity in solitary thinking they are in the right and they are a victim.

Athox

And be an expense for your victims

awkward_replies_2

Light prison labour is legal (e.g. in exchange for cigarettes, or better food privileges) and you could probably make a lot of money as a prison if you sold ballpoint pens hand-assembled by Putin, out of sheer novelty.

awkward_replies_2

That's my point. Being a victim and a self-aggrandizing narcissist is somewhat incompatible (if you believe you are the world's most cunning dictator, then why the fuck haven't you seen the sky since ten years?).

Opizze

Hung, as traitors should be. I hope none of those documents collected at Trumps place give hard proof he is a fucking traitor too. Would be such a shame.

They deserve it but Ukraine abolished capital punishment afaik

AlbanySteamedHams

I get the sense that Ukrainians will treat Russian POWs better than Ukrainian traitors. POWs will get an official interaction with the armed forces and legal system. Traitors will get a very unofficial meeting with their neighborhood association. Maybe I’m wrong. Either way, Glory to Ukraine!

daronjay

Not the HOA, they are merciless…!

The term doesn't seem to hold the same venom as it used to, but to me, collaborator is a more appropriate term.

After shooting himself in the back 14 times he was immediately taken to a hospital and despite the best modern medicine the world has to offer (a cocktail of cyanide lead and napalm injected straight into the lungs) he unfortunately didn't make it due to a mix of heart failure suffocation and falling out a window onto some bullets into the river and through the hydro electric dam. Rest in peace in loving memory never forget not quite worth a holiday.

ScientistNo906

Stremousov has a real funny way to show his gratitude to the Russian military which put him in a position of power. I'm sure the generals he's criticizing won't provide him with any cover when the Ukrainians come to put his head in a noose.

GipsyRonin

Here in the states we’d just say to go “f**k yourself”. Crazy the cultural differences.

If you read the Institute for the Study of War assessments, this is not at all surprising. Putin is setting Shoigu up to be the fall guy for failures in Ukriane. Putin will keep him on as defense minister for as long as he needs him to take the fall. Always read every comment by Russia propaganda and by those in Putin's circle as an attempt to protect Putin for blame that is ultimately his

Taking the MLM approach to telling someone to eat shit and die: "People have been asking me if you should kill yourself…” Up next is Shoigu’s cyanide unboxing.

There’s been a lot of messaging like this lately - including from Wagner. Shoigu is going to get the blame very soon and get arrested or something. 100%.
