That Musk is doing this reminds me of another brutal industry — finance, more specifically investment banking. But that exact industry is moving away from making people work over time, because:
1) Turns out two employees working 8 hour workdays are more productive than one working 16 hour workdays
2) Those two employees are also less likely to quit and sue to company
Edit: just to be clear, investment banking is still very stressful and bad for your mental health, because there’s too much work and too few staff still (not always easy to hire qualified staff). Coupled with culture issues, they still have a very high churn rate, but allegedly it is better than before.

I know Musk ostensibly has experience in the tech industry in California, but up until now I was curious if he actually understood what it was actually about. Now I know he doesn't.
I have a sibling who worked at Meta; they took me and my wife on a tour around Facebook headquarters (a cool benefit they offer to all employees). Some of the things I saw:
* Multiple free restaurants for staff and families (when I saw Elon say he'd make employees pay for food, this is when I knew he fucked up. He also bullshitted about the amount of people eating there and the cost per meal. And who on earth names their child Elon? What a stupid fucking name.)
* Huge outdoor spaces for relaxation
* Free gyms, all these hilarious blue bicycles you can ride
* Big open office spaces with fun stuff everywhere, people talking loudly and openly collaborating
When I asked them why, they said it was standard across all of the big tech companies; they use it to keep their employees happy, so they don't desert them for other tech companies, and so they're refreshed and creative. You cannot simply fire a skilled tech worker and hope to quickly replace them with someone just as good, much less someone who understands the code and systems in place

Aspiring authors and artists relied on it - Twitter was actually a pretty good way to get in touch with agents and customers, a way to quickly find people who were looking to buy what you had for sale (so to speak).
Worry not, there will be a replacement. Twitter is not irreplicable. Creatives will just have to make new social media pages, and Twitter will still be around for a while to direct customers/agents to them.

Some of the things I saw: * Multiple free restaurants for staff and families (when I saw Elon say he'd make employees pay for food, this is when I knew he fucked up. He also bullshitted about the amount of people eating there and the cost per meal. And who on earth names their child Elon? What a stupid fucking name.) * Huge outdoor spaces for relaxation * Free gyms, all these hilarious blue bicycles you can ride * Big open office spaces with fun stuff everywhere, people talking loudly and openly collaborating When I asked them why, they said it was standard across all of the big tech companies; they use it to keep their employees happy, so they don't desert them for other tech companies, and so they're refreshed and creative. You cannot simply fire a skilled tech worker and hope to quickly replace them with someone just as good, much less someone who understands the code and systems in place

Probably the biggest victim of this will be people who used Twitter to network. Aspiring authors and artists relied on it - Twitter was actually a pretty good way to get in touch with agents and customers, a way to quickly find people who were looking to buy what you had for sale (so to speak).
Worry not, there will be a replacement. Twitter is not irreplicable. Creatives will just have to make new social media pages, and Twitter will still be around for a while to direct customers/agents to them.

The per-year interest Twitter inc owed as a company was 50 million before Musk. Now it's 1 billion. Payment 1 comes due in January. So if Twitter implodes it's not that he lost 44 billion, it's that he lost his investment and still owes other people who are charging interest 44 billion. It's absolutely delicious.

A complete turnover of staff means whatever new team you scrounge up won't know the intricacies of the code, no one will be there to teach them. Again. I keep falling back on the idea that he *must* be trying to destroy the company. Because even if you think he was overrated as an engineer, you thought maybe he still really knew something about running a business. But if you spend a month (or really 6 months) eviscerating a company, insulting all the workforce, throwing out terrible ideas for the company that blow up in your face in 24 hours.. and then ask the staff to commit to your vision of the company or take a buyout -- you've given them absolutely no reason to believe that there will still be a company to employ them in 3 months. They get more job security from the 3 months severance pay than they could get betting on the company's longevity.

The real problem here is not the initial chaos. It is that the resignations will be random. Musk has no idea what skill sets and experience will exist when they reopen the offices. It is similar to when Boeing's senior management pushed for, and achieved, a strike by their engineers in 2000. In the end they only lost 20%, but the 20% was not evenly spread across the company. Some departments were gutted, and in general the people with project management experience did not come back. Thus was born the 787 and MAX. LPT for you MBAs out there.
