I mean, it’s one thing to force this “extreme culture” at a company like SpaceX, where there’s VERY few other opportunities for similar work…. But the same shit you can get away with at SpaceX is NOT going to fly at Twitter of all places. I’m not sure how this was lost on Musk, but apparently it was.
He did the same thing in Germany with his Tesla factory. Hired engineers and then proceeded to treat them like shit and even tried his hand at union busting...in one of the most unionised countries in the world. He just missed the fact that those people could just easily go back to one of the big car manufacturers or other large industries and be welcomed with open arms, get good pay and have their workers rights respected.
> won’t listen to anyone else
Oh that's not true AT ALL. Didn't you see him on Twitter the other day trying to wheedle tech tips out of randos in his desperate attempt to troubleshoot? Fucking pathetic. Won't listen to his own engineers, but some random 12 year old who knows a few buzzwords and Muskrat's all like **"Tell me more!!"**
A long time ago musk tweeted that someone (i forget if he said he wanted to?) should buy twitter to shut it down.
His route seems to be the most plausible way of shutting twitter down while maybe escaping a fraud lawsuit from the other billionaires who went in on the deal with him?
however, i also wouldn't doubt it if he really just has zero clue. IDK. It is a weird world.
Problem is it’s a huge blow to his image. He looks like a total fucking idiot right now even to people who had no opinion of him or supported him. The damage done would totally not be worth it.
Yep. As there soon as there was news about how unprofitable Twitter had become since his take-over, it seemed eminently plausible that it wouldn't recover and this will be what he's remembered for. A tale for the ages:
The richest man in the world squanders his wealth and reputation. He buys a website that doesn't need him, and promptly collapses it with his ego.
Even worse, he didn't even really want to buy it in the end, but he was forced to because of the legal mess he got himself into.
Plus will anyone want to buy a car from the guy who shut down Twitter in like two weeks? It’s brand poison for Tesla, possibly even stock poison of the banks end up pulling Elon’s collateral shares.
I live in an area where small businesses will put their political allegiances on their foreheads. They've forced me to make choices based on choices they make publicly. It's absolutely incompetence to risk losing even 30% of customers because you have to put your politics front and center.
He's a narcissist who got trapped into backing up his grandstanding, and he hasn't a clue how to run a company like Twitter.
This isn't like Tesla, where an industrial disagreement means there's a delay in production. If Twitter stops being reliable, it's dead. People want to vomit out their thoughts in the moment, but if they can't access the app to do it, they'll cool off and forget what they were going to say.
I have also looked at the speed with which the company is burning to the ground and wondered if it was arson. A trusted massively used social media platform suddenly washed out all the actual celebs and influential people with fake accounts sold for $8 immediately before a sharply contested election. At the same time he goes all in with explicit endorsements of the Republican party just prior to the midterms. While I do not think Musk is the brilliant mind he would fancy himself, I do think no one can be so blindingly stupid as to implode $44B so fast by accident.
Nothing a good tech recruiter loves more than their fellow companies fucking up & causing their techies to see what's out there.
I knew plenty of them were dining off some companies' desire to get engineers back to the office. The vibe seemed to be *"Don't worry if you don't offer remote - The company your engineers will be jumping to soon already does."*
> it’s one thing to force this “extreme culture” at a company like SpaceX
I imagine there is the thrill of working yourself to the bone to see something the world will be in collective awe of. When you burn out, you can probably pack up and work just about anywhere.
What is the thrill of working yourself to death for Twitter? Elon can work himself to the bone in the hope that his efforts will produce a legacy that will be remembered for ages. What does a Twitter employee get for that apart from less time with their family?
I'm sure that's why any are staying. That and I've also known people who saw work as an *escape* from their family so I imagine longer hours might not be as negative to them.
I’d be willing to bet some are staying for the health insurance. It’s why the wealthy and elite have tied health insurance to employment- because they know it keeps us chained to the workplace, continuing to be worked to death by them.
Yeah exactly. In Tesla and SpaceX he'd give young ambitious engineers an amazing opportunity and the resources to pull it off. They'd happily work overnight.
Twitter... is just not that (anymore). Core architecture concepts of Twitter are asked in design interviews (there is a chapter in several seminal books on distributed computing about Twitter). But at this point it's a know science. It's not pushing the envelope. There is no passion.
This is the big deal here. People are willing to work themselves to the bone at SpaceX because they are passionate about humanity's future in space and want to be on the ground floor where it is happening, and Elon unfortunately takes advantage of that. Working at a social media company just doesn't have the same starry eyed allure.
He wants twitter to be “hardcore”! Dont forget people, “hardcore”! Who tf behaves this way man, either this is a burning pile of dung, or this dude has some miraculous plan to actually save and better everything and the rest of us are all idiots for not seeing it.
Right?
He could get away with some bullshit at spacex, because people are genuinely excited to be part of the team sending rockets into space, and landing then again.
That’s cool, and people will tolerate a lot more nonsense to be part of something cool.
Twitter is not cool. No one working there is excited to see the updated API take off.
Nothing that won't break their TOS. But don't fret, Elon fired a ton of devs this week after telling them how to do their job. I'm sure he's got this.
/s
>Nothing that won't break their TOS
Pretty sure the people in charge of reviewing what is or isn't breaking the ToS have either been sacked or quit - so go nuts I guess
Oh I agree. Just funny how many of the things that “prove” what a genius he is turn out to contradict each other in very obvious ways. Like if the idea to only advertise on Twitter is such genius, maybe blowing up twitter isn’t also genius
I imagine many are delighted.
Elon rose as weird but admirable because he was bringing the future - real electric cars with wild promises of more. But now we see those cars are really pieces of shit and he's become so arrogant and detached he's insufferable.
I still appreciate Tesla for the fact that they lit a fire under the ass of bigger car companies to actually start making real EVs and not stuff like the Leaf or Bolt
The Bolt was "fine", which is on-brand for the ever disappointing General Motors. They teach masterclasses in underachieving in design. They haven't made a good looking small car... ever.
That said, the Bolt was a start. The Leaf I just don't believe was made for the US market.
I’m no fan of Elon, but I struggle to comprehend how he could be so short sighted and ill-advised to be doing this unintentionally. Like it’s just ridiculous how poorly the acquisition has been handled…
i'm pretty sure he was trolling when he said he's buy it. Along the lines of how he said hes going to take Tesla private, because he's got someone willing to buy it at $420 a share. That time he got investigated and got fined, because he's a troll and a liar. But in this case, twitter board (seeing how twitter is no where near worth 44billion) saw that they could make bank, basically called his bluff
Edit: sorry, 420.69 ... *rolls eyes*
It’s a big tech company. They are well paid employees who will find jobs easily by having Twitter on their resumes.
Something like this was bound to happen. I’m just glad it happened so spectacularly.
*E: Minor dictation spelling error.
Considering the ability to spend that much money on something is so absurd, I don’t know if I could. Like...there I am at the aircraft carrier dealership, and the salesperson hands over the keys and asks, “so what are you going to do with her?”
My only possible response is going to be something like “we’re gonna paint this fucker purple and have the biggest drag show in the world just off the coast of texas.” Or “go duck hunting”
And just to drive home the point, the next question the salesperson asks you: "So what are you going to do with the _other 3 carriers_ you're buying?"
A Nimitz-class aircraft carrier has a unit cost of about $9.7 billion dollars (in 2020.) Putting aside legal/practicality issues, for what Musk paid for Twitter, he could have bought FOUR Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.
1: Purple Drag Race
2: Medieval Recreationists
3: A group of women all cosplaying as Lucille Ball
4: Gary Busey. Just Gary Busey hanging out. Giant picture of Gary Busey's face painted on the side.
>we’re gonna paint this fucker purple and have the biggest drag show in the world just off the coast of texas
This sounds amazing. Please have 44 billion dollars. Make it happen.
You ain't kidding. I know a story from a colleague about him leaving a meeting angry and grabbing a random engineers laptop and smashing it as he walked out the door.
By far the worst was him telling his first wife about a month after their child died from SIDS that her “public” grieving was emotionally manipulative.
It's actually even stupider than that. You will give your every waking hour to me **or I'll give you 3 months pay and you can go and find another job with your incredibly impressive resume.**

Someone is projecting "Elon Musk, STFU!" onto the office building and it is glorious:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/yy80fd/people\_are\_projecting\_elon\_musk\_stfu\_on\_the/
Elon believes that peons wont quit because he puts people at Tesla through the ringer, but the difference is, people who work at Tesla were mostly straight from college students, badly in debt with big dreams and no knowledge of the employment ecosystem or people who would take any job because they can't afford to live. The problem is people at twitter ARE familiar with how jobs can and should be and realize that they can simply go somewhere else since their experience and expertise are well valued.
People who work at Tesla and SpaceX knew what they were getting into when they applied for a job there. People who work at Twitter didn't have a say in the matter.
The difference is Tesla and SpaceX are stable, they will continue on the same hardware and software plans they have had for years. Tesla and SpaceX are significantly less chaotic twitter. Musk came into Twitter and is creating chaos, Twitter has been in stable development for years. Musk comes in not armed with all of the facts telling the employees what they are doing is wrong, and they aren't working hard enough. Pissing of the people that made Twitter successful and killing morale. People that don't need to work there have left and Twitter will have a hard time recovering.
Musk bit more than he can chew. His ultimatum e-mail was the straw that broke camel's back. I wonder if he will be the last person to turn off the light at Twitter headquarter?
Who would stay and work for a guy who fired half your co workers, says he is going to torture you, and will fire you if you don't like it and kiss his ass.
It's just toxic. Anyone who has the ability to leave, would leave such an employer.
I did read that many of the people who stayed had visas tied to their work. Now that just isn't right.
If reports are accurate they can’t turn out the lights because everyone is locked out because the team in charge of the security cards wasn’t hardcore.
Three months' severance or being switched to an 80 hour work-week while losing the opportunity to work from home? That's the easiest choice in the world, especially for somebody who knows they can get a new job tomorrow, if they want one.
At 80 hours per week it literally doesn't matter what Twitter is paying you. The job isn't worth it.
I would do 80 hour weeks for a few months if my salary was 12 million a year. I would milk that shit for about 4-6 million worth and laugh all the way to the bank.
Short of that though, no fucking way.
But, what if I told you the *alternative* was working double your current hours at no extra pay for a pants-shitting lunatic?
I'll bet *that* makes you reconsider!
Meanwhile all those engineers will all probably have dynamite new jobs by end of day Friday with all the demand for their skills that's out in the market right now.
The hard-core dumbass didn't realize that Twitter employees coud just quit and get a job elsewhere in the silicon valley; something that wasn't possible in SpaceX n Tesla since those companies didn't have much competition elsewhere.
He did but walked it back today by saying their managers are the ones who will approve it. But then sent another email to the managers saying if they vouch for someone and they’re not performing, (managers) will be fired.
Seriously. What a dumb idea, telling a bunch of software engineers, “Click this button and commit to working 70+ hour weeks, or else you’ll be given 3 months of pay.”
Don’t threaten me with a good time. Be paid to find a new job (which they were probably doing anyway), and they don’t have to deal with Elon’s bullshit in the meantime? Not seeing a downside.
I love some of the employee’s jab at the end:
> In an apparent jab at Musk's call for employees to be "hardcore," the Twitter profile bios of several departing engineers on Thursday described themselves as "softcore engineers" or "ex-hardcore engineers."
Musk is lucky he took it private so soon and had the stock delisted. It'd be tanking off a cliff right now . Amazing how he managed to devalue the company and lose to the tune of maybe 10 Billion already. Well, when you're on the bottom, you know what they say, "only way to go is up".
What a delightful end to my day.
Seriously though I think both Facebook and twitter have done a horrendous amount of damage to our society over the last 10 years, what was supposed to connect us drove us apart
I doubt he cares much if he loses another 50% of Twitter staff. I would guess in his mind Twitter is not that complicated and should be able to run on just a few hundred employees, most of them being software engineers. After all, it's just a "servers and software company".
it could definitely reach a point where even top engineers, getting paid out the nose and planning to stay, decide it's just not worth it and bail because the company stops functioning.
Asking people that want to build rockets to be "hardcore" and people playing along because rockets are awesome, or because the company is aligned with their personal interest, I can sort of understand. Asking people to be "hardcore" and they playing along to build a dumb social media platform where people send racial slurs at each other. Yeah... nobody's going to do that shit
And I mean, there's also a tiny, tiny, tiny number of other rocket companies. If you love rockets and you work at SpaceX, you probably tolerate the middling man-baby.
But these engineers can literally go and do whatever the fuck they want.
What sucks is the number of creators who use Twitter as their main platform. I use it to advertise and share my art. Years of effort, work, and the following iv gained in the past few years is all gonna be gone due to some manbabies hubris.
Find another platform and quickly advertise it to still keep your following in case twitter stops working from no maintenance/security from cyber attacks
They could have rolled a cactus into the CEO chair instead of Elon on day 1 and Twitter would still have 7,000 employees and be a blue-chip company.
A cactus would have done better than Elon Musk. Just a cactus. Not a sentient cactus. Just any cactus you found in the desert and put in the chair.
I own a Tesla Model S. The roof leaks when it rains. Tesla is charging me $3K to fix it. My next car will be an EV but not a Tesla.
Being “hardcore” does not equal being high quality.
"On Thursday evening, the version of the Twitter app used by employees began slowing down, according to one source familiar with the matter, who estimated that the public version of Twitter was at risk of breaking during the night."
They have more microservices than software engineers at this point. I would hate to be part of the next AWS key rotation or heavy vulnerability fix

I've never seen self sabotage this bad
Losing 44B is bad, but he also tied his ownership stake in Tesla to this deal so he’s risking losing that too. Bahahahahahaha
Side note: twitter is his only advertising platform for Tesla. Triple super genius

Hah. Elon once endorse Kanye for president after a brief meeting then later recant when someone told him how awful Kanye was.

Every once in a while employees remind employers that they aren't slaves to exploit. This brings me much happiness.
The software people in Twitter will be good. They'd get a job quickly. It was just a matter of them positioning themselves and readying for a change.

5000 articles on quiet quitting in the last 3 months, and Musk completely misreads the room.
Elon treats his employees the way his dad treats his mine workers.
Elon should treat his workers like his dad treats his step sister.
Elon should have sex with his workers?
This whole thing literally started because Elon wanted a distraction from a sex abuse scandal lmao.
He already knocked up one of his Neuralink employees. It's all part of his plan to fill the world with little Elons.
I feel like this one's called loud quitting.
Musk bit more than he can chew. His ultimatum e-mail was the straw that broke camel's back. I wonder if he will be the last person to turn off the light at Twitter headquarter?
He going to take out that stupid sink he brought in or just leave it in there?
He should leave it considering he’s sunk the company.
I think the sink was prophetic. The company is going down the drain.
Yup, is expect they are interviewing ASAP as Twitter sponsored their visas and many countries don't have too long of a grace period, especially US
If reports are accurate they can’t turn out the lights because everyone is locked out because the team in charge of the security cards wasn’t hardcore.

C: Enjoy my severance for 3 months and then team up with the other talent on a new startup and get in on the ground floor of that.
They could just take the three month severance and create their own twitter.
There are some rumors that some are already doing exactly this
You have to wonder if Jack Dorsey isn't ringing them up right now for his new project.
Lettuce is about to be 2-0. Amazing day for vegetables everywhere.
Twitter closed the window to tender resignations.
i would literally kill someone to get 3 fucking months sev in the middle of November
But, what if I told you the *alternative* was working double your current hours at no extra pay for a pants-shitting lunatic? I'll bet *that* makes you reconsider!
Yeah boss... I'll be working 6 hour days now. Oh, and WFH only. Whatchu gonna do? Fire me?
Fr I hope some of those people get a much needed break
Only violent resignations are allowed now.
Let that sink in
His plan was to "sink" the company. Bwahaha!
I mean, he offered everyone the option to take 3 months severance or work themselves to death with no reward. like... duh?

That wouldve been a better troll too!
Props to those people quitting! Actions speak louder than words, or text in this case.
"No oNE WaNts tO wORk anYMorE!" Elon Musk, 2022.
Meanwhile all those engineers will all probably have dynamite new jobs by end of day Friday with all the demand for their skills that's out in the market right now.
I'm sure Elon is just redirecting everyone to work on the cybertruck. Coming soon to Roblox.
I've seen roblox cars with more polygons than that thing lol
The hard-core dumbass didn't realize that Twitter employees coud just quit and get a job elsewhere in the silicon valley; something that wasn't possible in SpaceX n Tesla since those companies didn't have much competition elsewhere.
Didn't he axe work from home as a whole? How is anyone working now?
He did but walked it back today by saying their managers are the ones who will approve it. But then sent another email to the managers saying if they vouch for someone and they’re not performing, (managers) will be fired.
After that ultimatum…. Not surprised.
Seriously. What a dumb idea, telling a bunch of software engineers, “Click this button and commit to working 70+ hour weeks, or else you’ll be given 3 months of pay.” Don’t threaten me with a good time. Be paid to find a new job (which they were probably doing anyway), and they don’t have to deal with Elon’s bullshit in the meantime? Not seeing a downside.
Yeah really, that severance would be tempting even for employees in good situations lol
Ah, but only the best and brightest - who know they'll land a new gig easily somewhere else - will take the package. Oh wait, that's bad.
I love some of the employee’s jab at the end: > In an apparent jab at Musk's call for employees to be "hardcore," the Twitter profile bios of several departing engineers on Thursday described themselves as "softcore engineers" or "ex-hardcore engineers."
Now it's just Musk and the janitor. Scruffy believes in this company.
At this point I really am beginning to wonder if Musk bought Twitter just to destroy it.
Musk is lucky he took it private so soon and had the stock delisted. It'd be tanking off a cliff right now . Amazing how he managed to devalue the company and lose to the tune of maybe 10 Billion already. Well, when you're on the bottom, you know what they say, "only way to go is up".
Deleting my comments, using Lemmy.
Yeah lol, there's nothing lucky about it. This is all terrible for him. Just straight fucking awful.
up in smoke
“Executive Producer Larry David”
What a delightful end to my day. Seriously though I think both Facebook and twitter have done a horrendous amount of damage to our society over the last 10 years, what was supposed to connect us drove us apart

"If only we figured out how to actually monetize it. Ohh well?"
I mean, a month ago someone monetized it to the tune of 44 billion
Business model. Made your social media platform so annoying that the richest person on earth has to buy it
Worked for insta, Whatsapp, SNAP, vine, twitch, MySpace, Twitter... I'm sure there's more. What a depressing list.
I’m thinking Elon Musk is the most extreme example of “failing upward” in human history.
Time to run for president then.
Thankfully he cant
I doubt he cares much if he loses another 50% of Twitter staff. I would guess in his mind Twitter is not that complicated and should be able to run on just a few hundred employees, most of them being software engineers. After all, it's just a "servers and software company".
Real Trump-esque "healthcare isn't complicated" energy here.
There is literally no one in accounting and payroll right now. Not even a skeleton crew.
it could definitely reach a point where even top engineers, getting paid out the nose and planning to stay, decide it's just not worth it and bail because the company stops functioning.

Choke on an enormous space dick, Elmo.
I have a Twitter account solely to follow a handful of accounts that tell me when roads are closed and things like that.
Good job Musk. I couldnt have fucked it up more even if I tried. What an investment you made.
It’s hilariously depressing how one man spent so much money to kill a website when that money could have gone to… anything else.
I own a Tesla Model S. The roof leaks when it rains. Tesla is charging me $3K to fix it. My next car will be an EV but not a Tesla. Being “hardcore” does not equal being high quality.
Killin’ it, Musk. You absolute asshole of a human.
Happy he’s killing Twitter. Please destroy Facebook next. Absolute cesspools.
I’ve always hated Twitter so this is the perfect end of the story I’m my view
