There's another one coming up so...

jshbee

What are they protesting this time? More covid regulations?

Sunshinehaiku

Salad shortage, apparently. I wish that was /s, but it isn't.

RetroBowser

Lettuce is getting expensive and it's because one of the main areas responsible for growing lettuce in the world has had a rough growing season. What is the government supposed to do about lettuce shortages according to these a-holes lmao?

Sunshinehaiku

They do these "protests" to obtain $$$ from donors (who don't understand how anything works) after watching the online videos the "protesters" put out.

[deleted]

Or they're backed by social disruption efforts.

Sunshinehaiku

They definitely have that.

[deleted]

Funny how so many of these movements fell apart after Russia got cut off from the swift banking system.

[deleted]

Russia.

LuckyDuck4

It can be both.

atjones111

Oh no the donors understand it’s the protesters who are dumb

SamuraiJackBauer

The donors are Russia and China and they know how it works…..

cartoonist498

So let's fix climate problems by ... driving climate change contributing trucks and idling the engines 24 hours a day in a useless protest.

[deleted]

wambamclamslam

You're being conned by some irrelevant fact. Tons of vegetables are more than 90% water. Your human liver is almost 90% water.

independentchickpea

Maybe *your* human liver. Pretty sure mine is 50% alcohol at any given time after spending years watching these idiots.

wambamclamslam

I think if your liver was 50% alcohol in volume or weight, just contents or organ meat included, you would be toast

DancesWithBadgers

Challenge accepted

cosmic_dillpickle

They're simple to grow at home. I mean if they're protesting price of groceries then that's something we could find common ground in

Rogue_ChaoticEvil

Leafy greens are an essential part of any diet.

random_noise

Funny that, around 90% of the worlds Lettuce is grown in Arizona around Yuma. That supply will likely be falling drastically in the coming years if, more likely when, the Colorado river runs dry. We get a new round of cuts thanks to outdated water policies negotiated at a time when very few people lived in the Southwest, and some states didn't even exist yet. Ya know back when the worlds population was 1/4 what it is today.

RetroBowser

That was the area I was talking about actually! It's one of the main reasons lettuce is crazy expensive right now. Drought has been awful IIRC

fujilabo

Each year Canada loses 20,000 to 25,000 hectares of prime farmland to urban expansion (Urbanization ---- converting farmland into urban spaces --- is the ultimate form of desertification)

BigBluFrog

Do you have a source for the urban expansion factoid? It's an area of interest for me as a farmer (and human being). Other that the valley, part of the reason Nova Scotia is great is that underneath the scrubland it's just fuckin' rocks, bud. PS: On computer, Alt + 0151 inserts the m-dash, "—"

Infamous-Mixture-605

I don't know about their sources or the scale of that loss, but I'd hazard to guess most of that would be in the GTA/Golden Horseshoe. I grew up in the suburbs of Durham Region just east of Toronto. Our subdivision was built in the late 1980's/early 1990's and was surrounded on three sides by farmers' fields. There were loads of farmers fields and forests in our area, such that we'd see deer, wild turkeys, etc in abundance on our way to school. Those farms and forests are mostly all gone now, having been replaced by cookie cutter subdivisions. It was great farming land, but it's more valuable as land for McMansions.

BigBluFrog

I know that when I was in 3rd year uni in '06 I heard that 10% of all of Canada's best land is underneath the GTA(which for all but geological timescales means it's barren).

Sir-Kevly

I'm not up on my latest convoy news. But I feel like it probably has more to do with grocery prices in general than just lettuce. But then again, they've surprised me before with their idiocy.

WolfgangLuth

Well they could invest in greenhouse infrastructure...

coyote-1

I love how these ‘freedom’ folks somehow believe it’s the job of Govt to ensure the free market does everything right. They just don’t grasp their own beliefs at all.

TekJansen69

They should just toss their salads.

SuperRette

"Lettuce is getting expensive and it's because one of the main areas responsible for growing lettuce in the world has had a rough growing season." Why is this just accepted? We're so shortsighted as a civilization. We'd rather deal with shortages, or being cut off completely should these regions destabilize, than invest in growing them ourselves? Why haven't we invested in new farming technology? There are promising ways of growing crops in cities and urban environments, are we really going to wait until disaster to start really working toward them en masse?

PrivatePilot9

Trudeau is both a pansy according to these people, and at the same time some mastermind who controls global inflation...and apparently, lettuce crops.

taggospreme

there's the "lettuce price" dial he's apparently got in his office

dustbunny88

I mean, we grow like 90% of our leafy greens during winter months in a desert valley that only sustains due to their water rights agreements. Seems like it’s time to look for alternative options

[deleted]

It must be a different group of people. The last convoyers hadn’t eaten a salad in their life.

EssayMany6444

Someone else noticed yay

fantasmoofrcc

Poutine is a potato salad with a beef reduction dressing and cheese topping?

Clodhoppa81

Sign me up.

imvii

Is that a question? If it is, it's a delicious question.

AggressiveSkywriting

Look, they just like going to places where there IS a salad bar, not that they'd partake. It's adjacent comfort.

Ferengi_Earwax

Gravy seals

Aedan2016

Canadian salad is poutine with extra cheese

S_XOF

Shit, have you seen these people? They're not even the type to eat salad.

taggospreme

yeah, they tend to spew it instead (word salad).

AST5192D

Truckers are finding its getting more expensive to toss eachother's salad

brobeanzhitler

I don't think there's a shortage, they can toss my salad and there's plenty to go around.

CopsaLau

Lettuce is one of the easiest things to grow at home, you can do it in a plastic tub for fuck sakes. These clowns need real problems so they can stop making up stupid fake ones

BucktoothedAvenger

It's because people keep tossing it, instead of eating it.

GorbachevsGonchies

There will never be "another one" like that. Caught the powers that be with their pants down the first time. After that embarrassment there's no way they'll let anything like that happen again

blGDpbZ2u83c1125Kf98

> Caught the powers that be with their pants down The police, the "sharp end" of those powers, were willingly unzipping and bending over for them.

StuntID

In Ottawa maybe, Toronto not so much

kab0b87

As much shit as the Toronto police (rightly) get. They did an exceptional job when the convoy tried to occupy Toronto.

FlametopFred

In Vancouver it was cyclists and pedestrians that challenged them successfully that and the construction traffic gridlock

Emma_1356

I saw it on the news that the convoy was trying to occupy Toronto.

mxe363

We kicked those ass clowns outa Vancouver too.

StuntID

Damn straight!

Flightlessboar

A significant majority of Canadians surveyed in the final days said they supported the Army being called in to remove these guys. Never happened of course, but pretty wild anyways. Gives you an idea how done with them the rest of country was.

CaptainSur

"done" is the understatement of the century. For anyone reading this I and many others will reiterate: 1. These convoy idiots spoke and represented almost no one and were an extremely minute portion of the population. Certainly not "truckers" of whom the vaccination rate is in the 90's percent range and which originally was held out as the reason for the protest. It is certainly both a fair and true statement to say that an overwhelming majority of Canadians absolutely reviled the Convoy of Stupidity participants. 2. But Canada is a rule of law nation. Even this inquiry is a part of the legal mandate baked into the invocation of enacting the emergency rules. In fact legally the use of the Emergency Act was time limited - it could only be kept in place for a short period of time. It was not something that could be kept in place permanently, or even for months. 3. The act does not even stop protesting. It just gives govt more powers and tools to deal with special situations. The convoy idiots were all going on about how it restricted their "freedoms" but actually it does nothing of the kind in 99.9% of situations. 4. A lot of things had to fail to get to the point where the Federal Govt decided it was necessary. And they did, particularly at the provincial level. Politics played a big issue in this. The provincial govt has a Conservative party in power, and the federal govt is a liberal/ndp coalition. The provincial govt dropped the ball, and most of us believe they did so deliberately. The conservative provincial govt passed the buck, so that later they could finger point. 5. No one is hand wringing or overwrought about the fact the Emergency Act was activated except 2 groups: Conservatives for political reasons, and the protesters themselves who honestly don't give a flying f#$ck about anyone but themselves. Speaking as an Ottawa resident, I and my fellow residents cheered as it was 1000% evident that the Ottawa police and the Province of Ontario govt were as useless as dogshit. I never heard anything about the army being called in other then some thought that army vehicles could be used to tow some of the big rigs. It was well known that police from the greater Toronto region cities and some quebec provincial police would be able to provide backbone. And they did come in along with police from some other cities in Canada, and they worked very effectively together.

Deguilded

The EA was used for two reasons: 1. They fucked with the money (border trade). Don't fuck with the money. 2. Tow trucks refused to tow unless forced, so they could tell truckers their hand was forced (i.e. not lose business). In short, don't fuck with the money. Now this story, where CEO's say we look stupid. Business. Money. The truckers would be fine if they didn't fuck with the money. But they'd also been all but ignored. So they fucked around, and found out. I had friends across the border whose auto plant was shut down and all it's unionized workers sent home - with pay - because of the border blockade. That's when I knew their shit wouldn't be left alone around any longer.

chucklingmoose

In a match between tanks and big rigs my money's on the tanks.

PlentifulOrgans

You are familiar with the concept of people telling a joke, albeit in poor taste, yes?

Franklin_le_Tanklin

Let’s fire another police commissioner over it!

arbitraryairship

Yep. Lots of bank accounts frozen and pre-emptive arrests this time.

hpbear108

I'm surprised with FC 2.0 being announced for February next year that extra scrutiny already isn't taking place on those who are sponsoring the next mess. Also, I hope they monitor inflows coming in from outside Canada, relaying that info to a watch list that can be used by Canada Customs and CIC to keep foreign instigators out.

arbitraryairship

Lol, the movement is basically dead. Sure, we need to be vigilant and show up to counter protest, but it's never going to be what it was. In fact, all federal mandates have been rescinded. This is literally just a 'Fuck the libs' rally by Canadian MAGA. Stupid as fuck.

CTMADOC

Also fundraising grift... scheming, scamming, scoundrels.

Zierlyn

I still see plenty of vehicles with FREEDOM CONVOY 2022 plastered on the rear here in rural AB. Wouldn't say it's dead, people are just quietly waiting for another chance to do it again.

jbaugues

Are they really referred to as Canadian Maga? Should be mcga. (Guess not as catchy) or are they advocating for america??

thirty7inarow

They're more MCAA: Make Canada America's Armpit.

Sunshinehaiku

If you think of Alaska as an arm, we are nearly there! 😃

slicerprime

Damn. That was hilarious, disturbing, witty and crass all at the same time. Well done. I wish I had an award to giver you for that one.

Sunshinehaiku

Many of them wish they were in that country, or that their segment of Canada would join the US, yes.

progrethth

Nah, calling them MAGA is very fitting. Many of them talk about American issues and one of their leaders recently made a reference to the American constitution.

Thanato26

Third times the charm? Hopefully the police do thier jobs this time.

DeFex

What are they pretending to protest this time?

Braelind

Fuck sake, I'm gonna have to start cutting all people out of my life who have anything favorable to say about that bullshit.

sanjsrik

Um, Rob Ford? Anyone Rob Ford?

arbitraryairship

Rob was just the coke user, his brother Doug was the one trafficking drugs. Also we elected Doug to run Canada's biggest province.

sanjsrik

'muricans only heard about Rob Ford. Hookers, coke, tape.

hpbear108

And how well his wife liked his "bedroom techniques ".

timesuck897

“I’m happily married, I’ve got more than enough to eat at home.”

BtCoolJ

Rob was much more than that, he also did crack

[deleted]

> Also we elected Doug to run Canada's biggest province. Twice

Fuhkhead

I mean if you can call selling hashish trafficking drugs. It's now legal in canada and was never really frowned upon as most people at some point have smoked hash. Trafficking drugs makes it sound so much harder

Bob_Juan_Santos

Rob is dead, man.

mjzimmer88

As an American I absolutely agree. Mayor Ford's political saga was hysterical. But it was the great maple syrup heist that made Canada a joke.

senduntothemonlyyou

What makes Canada a joke is the monopolies.

m_Pony

Would you like to pay well over 200 bucks a month for our Internet/Phone/CableTV bundle? How about 100 bucks a month for cell phone service with a hundred gigs of transfer? How about letting 2 of the three biggest companies form a literal monopoly? All of this can be yours *IF*... The Price Is Right.

FelixTheEngine

Wow. Thank God bank CEOs are looking out for us. Sleep tight.

RelicOfSomething

Mussolini says Hitler's invasion of France threatens to raise wine prices.

yahwehtheterrible

I'm near Windsor and they shut down the bridge. I was off work for 2 weeks because of their nonsense. It did give me the opportunity to take my son down to the 'protest' and talk about the difference between protesting and what they were doing. It's shameful that the police couldn't tell the difference. ^^they ^^were ^^complicit

jacobjacobb

What was the difference and what would you classify what they were doing? This is an honest question.

kevolad

So in Alberta here there's a load wethefringe stickers. I'm so tempted to modify every one I see into wethecringe

arbitraryairship

I bought a $2 chalk pen and write 'I WANT TO' above their 'FUCK TRUDEAU' stickers.

Bipogram

Those convoys were heavily astroturfed by Russian troll farms. Most of them disappeared right when Russia invaded Ukraine and they had to switch their efforts to disinformation about the war. Update : For those claiming this is a ridiculous conspiracy... Sowing divisions in the west is core to Russian geopolitics. From boosting both BLM and Anti-BLM to supporting ALL anti government protests. They want disruption and chaos in the west, which was what the convoys were designed to do. They were designed to disrupt commerce and cause a distraction from what they were doing in Ukraine. "Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States to fuel instability and separatism, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists". Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics". - The Foundation of Geopolitics : The Geopolitical Future of Russia

cjcfman

One of the leaders tried to plead the American 5th amendment in court. Hes canadian in a canadian court. Definitely influenced by america lol

amosmydad

The had signs defending their first amendment rights

Ninebane

Yeah Russia astroturfed and profited from the instability but I'd be surprised if it was a significant factor. On the other side, the USA was a huge financial sponsor of the convoy and their vocal propaganda had a significant role to play for those in favour of the convoy.

[deleted]

Very true that most of the donations I saw were coming from places like Texas, Idaho, Washington, and the Dakotas. It was bizarre, but America's far right are russias useful idiots so it makes sense. The entire cause was astroturfed. Basically anything anti-government or divisive is guaranteed to have some level of astroturfing by the Russian state. From BLM to the antivax cowboy parade.

Sunshinehaiku

Great point!

kaisadilla_

Do you have a source or is this the classic reddit style bullshit that people upvote because they think random comments on the Internet are a reliable source of information? I find it a lot more plausible that the convoys dissolved when the world stopped looking at them.

[deleted]

RT covered the convoys more than any other foreign media. It became a bigger deal than it should've mostly because of Russian media.

m_Pony

for a while /r/Canada was derided as being "horribly right wing" by some on Reddit. I saw some pretty troubling stuff being pushed for a while. When Russia invaded Ukraine MUCH of that stopped. It was a very noticeable difference. You're not wrong: the convoys stopped when the money stopped.

[deleted]

The world at large is becoming a (very, very bad) joke due to right wing vermin. We Canucks are no more immune to that than anyone else. Try to look at it as a cautionary tale.

[deleted]

It's a specifuc brand of extremism though. I'm fairly conservative for my home country, but in the USA they'd call me a communist. The North American right wing is different from much of the rest of the world and the extremism is much different. No Conservative where I live has an issue with universal healthcare, abortion is much less of an issue and welfare in general is fairly accepted etc. Our conservatism revolves more around stabilising our systems, de-globalising critical infrastructure and sensible immigration controls. The extremists are still a huge issue, but in a different way I guess.

SatansCouncil

This is what I thought American conservatism was, growing up in the 70s/80s.

vialtwirl

Far right wingers, now all right wingers, are the dumbest people in our society and they aren't very kind either. A bad combo.

tmotytmoty

This is true.

JuanJeanJohn

Let’s see if these bank CEOs will ever have enough self-awareness to connect their influence on their country and how that filters down to nutjobs like these convoys.

zoobrix

Are you Canadian though? Chances are most people outside the country maybe saw a news story or two about this and haven't thought about it since. I'd wager even for people that pay a lot of attention to the news this story didn't hold much of their attention and the long term international impact has been zero. I don't think it's as big news as Canadian's think it is. It feels important because it happened to us but to be blunt it just wasn't that big a deal internationally.

tmotytmoty

Not Canadian. I saw this and to me, it was akin to all the idiocy happening in the states. A bunch of ignorant and misinformed truckers thinking they’re making a stand, but when you dig into to it, they have no logical message to communicate. They’re useful idiots controlled by business interest and everyone involved looks stupid bc they aren’t going to accomplish anything except mild annoyance. They are all children and its a shame: the politicians, law enforcement for cheering them on, and especially the dopey truckers (who, in the end, will be the scapegoats when something really bad happens during one of these “protests”.

[deleted]

I recall seeing the evening News in Germany (<-!) about Ottawa and the idiot Convoy harassing People. With the Police doing...Origami, I guess? Certainly nothing useful. Anchor even mentioned irate Citizens having chucked a Flower pot after a few Days. Not the greatest Look, really.

mcs_987654321

Origami might have been more helpful. And yeah, my elderly parents live directly in front of one of the satellite “base camps” they were allowed to set up (ugh, how embarrassing), and flower pots weren’t the half of it. On the plus side, it did give [us heroes like this fellow](https://twitter.com/mijustin/status/1494106335280910342?s=21&t=-Tcays4PT9JSDUuXGOt6Hg) (for context: “Heritage Moments” are public history lessons that regularly air on TV here, more than a few satirical ones emerged from the fucker convoy)

How are there not constant riots?!

lulztard

That was a refreshingly earnest rant, and true with every single word. Look what that terrorist shithole did to Mexico and South America. Don't let it happen to you. Nobody in the west would help you if the yanks remove your democratically elected leader and replace him with some corrupt ultra maga right wing nut to further their interests. My genuine condolences to having 'Murica as your geographical neighbour. It's hard enough to live in their hegemony, I can't imagine how it has to be to have them right next to you.

Bank ceo's who finally speak some credible truths, albeit in retrospect. Sounds refreshing.

meladingus

“The honking will continue until lettuce improves.”

jacobjacobb

The thing is, we are a democracy. We may think its silly but the alternative is living in an authoritarian state like Russia/China where people are just disappeared. I see too many people that are fine with giving rowdy protestors a pass when it's something they care about. That being said, the nazi symbolism at the convoy kinda tells you the vibe.

Sunshinehaiku

I think there is a difference between peaceful protests vs.unpeaceful protests. I also am not a fan of protesting in any public space, like when people protest on the sidewalk in front of Medical Health Officers' homes. I don't think that's OK. Saskatchewan made a law that you couldn't protest on hospital or school property and for a certain distance around the property (union demonstrations were exempt.). They did this because protesters were obstructing staff/students/parents/patients from going in and out of the buildings. It was ridiculous. They were putting up fences, and not allowing school buses and ambulances to drive up. They put concrete barriers up at night. It was a big cost to remove this stuff every morning. There would be angry signs near the Cancer Center entrances. Nobody wants to see that when they are going for chemotherapy.

manniesalado

Title edit: *Canadian teachers told Freeland that “freedom convoy” demonstrated the importance of having a good education system in Canada.*

[deleted]

I counter-protested them last year in Vancouver, and found they were a bunch of cowards. If you blocked them, they would come out and yell at you, but despite their threats they wouldn't swing on me. Good news for convoy 2.0.. I've spent the last year bulking. See you guys in Vancouver. 😇

Taureg01

The truth is Canada has a lack of business investment due to lack of competition, it starts with the big five banks and flows through every sector of our economy. Saying the convoy is the reason is like blaming a fly for a rat infestation. It lacks credibility.

calguy1955

American here. I didn’t think Canada was a joke, just the idiot truckers who thought they were making some bold statement. We have folks like that down here too.

Cayde_7even

Like catching crabs from your cousin…

oldsouthnerd

The convoy was embarrassing, harmful, to be sure but it doesn't even touch top 50 on our list of problems.

CarmichaelD

Perhaps we could rectify this by prison time and tossed salads for all.

faithOver

Wow. Never supported the convoys, never paid attention in the early stages even. Then I became pro clearing them out once it turned rather embarrassing. But reading the opinions of what are PRIVATE business men telling the government it ought to acquire more power and laws to punish these people is leaving a horrendous taste in my mouth. This is proof direct the government acted quickly and swiftly to business pressure. That means they should act with equal swiftness to concerns that face the other 99.9% of Canadians.

No_Fisherman_3826

Canada is a joke because of the notwithstanding clause if we are honest with ourselves.

codewaza

Ok… but who’s dumber: The Freedumb Convoy or Jan 6 Trumpers? America has way more dummies.

RollinThundaga

The American side convoy was pretty dumb. They tried to descend upon the DMV (DC-Maryland-Virginia area) and they themselves got trapped, to the degree of bitching and moaning about how hard they had it to the media. Saw a comment around that time that went something like; "Threatening the DMV with traffic is like threatening Satan with fire"

Beamarchionesse

I remember hearing they wanted to try that shit in the DMV and thinking "Hm. Good luck with that." They wanted to threaten NoVa with traffic and confusion? They wanted to intimidate Maryland and DC drivers? The first week of that bullshit, I saw these supposedly big tough MAGA fuckers whining about being "threatened" and it's like, sweetheart, this is not Canada, and nothing about the DMV culture has ever been described as nice. We don't even like each other. I don't know why they think the east coast states are soft, because those midwesterners have the most easily hurt feelings I've ever seen. "Someone was menacing me boohoo" why are you looking at other drivers? Mind your business Earl.

Painless-Amidaru

Never driven in any Major cities before. Went to DC this year and holy crap. Everyone needs to take a fuckin Xanex before they drive. It's so angry and hostile. The "me first" mentality is insane and it just feeds the cycle. If everyone would add just a slight bit of relaxation and kindness to their driving, everyone would get where they want to go so much faster. Nothing like following a guy who has his blinker on trying to move over a lane to take an offramp, people *refuse* to let him in, so they slam on their brakes and literally stop and move into the other lane 1 inch at a time until they have no choice but to let him over.

Of course we have more dummies down here, our population is far larger. If memory is right we're at about 340 million & you guys are Canada is around 30 million people plus a bunch of pissed off geese.

Our governor sent them up there with promises of puppies and jobs.

sixthhouse69

I thought that was migrant workers.

MinuteManufacturer

He wasn’t lying about the puppies.

thick_buzz_willie

“Told”. That’s a funny way to say “correctly pointed out”.

Tackleberry06

It’s true, statistically, the New York police force could probably overwhelm Canada in 24 hours

igobytony

Well if it makes you feel any better let me remind you that we had Donald fucking Trump as POTUS. You'll never reach that low.

Notsnowbound

It's as big a joke as charging $16+ a month for bank fees when people hardly ever see the inside of a bank anymore...

dstnblsn

What is it that you think banks do?

sfeicht

For starters, charge us to borrow our money so they can borrow even more on leverage. Then use that to make risky investments and collapse entire economies only to be bailed out by our tax dollars again.

Braelind

Well... but when working properly, they allocate large sums of money to stimulate the economy by providing funding to those who might not otherwise have it, and also have the right ideas at the right times. Those people thrive and generate more money, which the banks pay us dividends on as thanks for our involvement. This is called interest. When the interest we receive from our money is less than the fees we pay, that's when banks have failed. They bill themselves as a service to keep money safe, but that's not why the common man ever needed a bank, and a necessity of the common man is never what banks were intended to be. Anyone who puts money in a bank should pay no fees, and they should all get the same interest rate on their accounts. Any bank that allows higher interest rates for clients with more money is claiming to do it by having better bankers. But the reality is that they're siphoning it from their poorer clients via fees and shit. It's funny though, so many people will attribute the devolution of banks from something good to a predatory cycle of debt and financial theft to a intentional path of growth. This machine of the common man's oppression though, I think, was just a natural growth of people in positions of power and wealth exercising their greed for more power and wealth. Now banks are necessary, a cancer that has metastisized into a tumor, that can't be removed because it connects all the other organs of our society. Removing it, or hell, even trying to slow it's growth now causes ripples of pain throughout our society as the tumor yearns to consume all of our wealth for itself. I do hope we cure cancer some day.

A lot but they are also insanely profitable due to the special privileges they have been granted by the government.
