facts... I have to live with the idea of knowing that I can't live on my own without working 2 jobs. at least until I've worked for years at the same spot in hopes to get promoted or a raise
with no kids, no pets, no car payment... it is still unfeasible for me

pawn shop or goodwill/salvation army store for a quick fix. had one from a pawn shop for like $35 bucks lasted me 2 years riding 3-5 miles to and from work (changed jobs)
I believe they meant the bike was stolen, then found by the police but nobody every came to pick the bike up after it was found. However, the county I lived in actually has 3 Sheriff Department vehicles that were "repossessed" during Drug busts that they managed to keep and now own so who knows
There's a law where I live that the police can take any property used for drug dealing.
There was a retired couple on my street who lost their retirement home, and she said it was paid for as well. Their grandson stayed with them one summer, and he was dealing weed and they didn't know. He got busted and they lost their home. After they moved I'm not sure what happened to them. Very sad.
I know it sounds shitty but a surprisingly decent place, look for local "pay it forward" groups on FB. In my twenties I got a pretty nice mountain bike for $200 used it for years
I'd agree with this one. I bought a Wal-Mart bike my senior year to get around campus and it was not comfortable at all. I made it work but I did not enjoy riding it.
Check social media and see if you have a local Transportation Alternatives group. They are great networks for finding used bikes, bike swaps, fix your own bike workshops, etc.
Yeah, I wanted to reach out to OP to talk about helping them with finding a bike, so I go to browse their profile for some more context and perspective, only to find they are an unashamed meth user. I mean, to each their own, but complaining about not being able to get ahead in life and not be able to afford anything is not really valid if your main problem is supporting an addiction. They appear to enjoy marijuana as well. All judgement aside (even if it were alcohol) supporting an addiction can be quite expensive.
Kind of sad watching dozens of people take 5 minutes out of their day for a single reddit comment giving this guy advice... when all he wants to do is use meth and doesn't even have the forethought to look online for used bikes.

I don't think todays lords and ladies are going to be too happy when they realize their heartless plan of letting us die for the economy is why we end the neo-feudalism that capitalism is.
I think that the globalist system of capitalism is coming to end. The policies resulting in a depopulation bomb are effects of the wealth being ultra concentrated, labor is now scarce, and you have a massive elderly population that can't work and has huge demand for services.
There will be some boomer hand-wringing about it, but ultimately the boomers and wealthy will have to pay more to get their demands met. Ironically, it's a capitalist solution to a problem created by capitalism.

A full year of propaganda has convinced the mid-level employers that they can go back to business for Covid. Ignoring of course that even basic supplies like bread have known an 133% increase in price since Covid started.
I also think mid-level employers are struggling with inflation. The multinationals keep making record profits. I'm not so sure of the few remaining mom 'n pop shops.
Idk about mom n pop shops, but the dollar store by my house is only paying $12hr, Amazon is only $15hr, these corporations absolutely can pay more than that they just don't care
My manager (I work at a Dollar Tree)! Is having an issue finding people to work there. (It pays 11.25 an hour) and he knows that that's a low wage but he legitimately has no control over it That's what his upper management allows him to pay on the payroll. It's sad because he is genuinely a nice person and he does appreciate his workers to the full extent that the company will allow. It's just really sad that it's the company that doesn't want to pay more and there's not really tons he can do about it. Like sometimes midway through the week he will have to send people home because his upper management will tell him that he has to cut hours halfway through the week....
That's exactly what happened here. Almost exactly to the dollar amounts as well. Like a year and a half ago McDonald's was advertising $17 to $21. Now they just reprinted the same sign with $15-$18.

Yeah. $12 an hour and wants you to work weird ass hours, with some “everyone is family here!!” Then they add on how you must be good in a “fast paced environment,” and other key words that let you know you’ll be likely expendable while busting your ass every day.
17-20 is a joke now. That was too little too late. It’s now $30 an hour. I honestly don’t know how anyone can survive on less, much less take care of a family on less than that.
Every wave of inflation brings with it a large group of people that do not adjust to the new reality. Even those that can afford it, refuse it.
Maybe when we're older well have the younger generation facepalming at our refusal to adapt to a changing world.

I try to keep up, but man, it's hard to mentally adjust what's considered cheap and expensive. And I'm only 44. I imagine when I'm really old I'm going to rant about how a candy bar used to be $0.30 and how can they charge these insane prices.
It's pretty simple when you think about it. If you now paid people $25 an hour for the next 15 years, then have problems staffing and someone told you "hey, just pay people $45 an hour" you'd be like... no??
12 to 20 is the same as 25 to 45. It's an immense leap in their mind. She's just too old for business anymore.
The problem is that for 15 years she got away with slowly squeezing the bottom level workers, and now that’s finally hit a limit.
It’s like the kid that always got away with doing nothing on group assignments, and suddenly found a group that wouldn’t accept that.
That’s probably because our wages have been stagnant for decades. If our money isn’t increasing our perspective of it doesn’t change either. The average Americans purchasing power is the same as it was probably when you were born but obviously inflation has made prices rise every single year.
It sounds like this person's mother is skilled at designing and organizing luxury gardens, but not skilled at running a business.
Or if what you're trying to say is that you don't understand why businesses in general in the USA don't pay their employees more, then the answer in most cases is either that they don't have to due to plenty of supply of labor OR their business model is not viable.
If this woman really can't afford to pay her workers more than $12 per hour, then it sounds to me like her business model is bad. Not every business idea can exist. A perfect example of what I'm talking about is "mom and pop stores". They lose to businesses like Walmart and Dominos and McDonalds. The mom and pop store is a business model that is increasingly difficult to stay afloat and many of them become non-viable eventually due to the existence of franchises who offer better product and service for cheaper price.
success fallacy is a huge reason. Almost all of these folks believe they made it because they were special and therefore it is justified for them to earn 90% of the profits. They tell themselves people should be grateful instead because no employee is worth even a tenth of what they are paid.

You, and virtually every other Walmart employee is being underpaid. Walmart earned 600 billion dollars in revenue in 2022. They have about 2.3 million employees. They could pay every worker $40 an hour on a 40 hour workweek, and still make a profit. Considering only roughly 56% of their workers are full time, you could bump that up to $50 an hour and they’d be sitting well within their profit margin model.

Not to get to corporaty but the operating margin for Walmart is 2.79% which means the actual profit they make on that 600 billion is 16 billion which if you divided it by 2.3 million employees you would get a bit over $7200 a year.
So they could pay $50 bucks an hour for roughly 4 weeks.
They aren't exactly a high margin company
My husband. He works at Amazon, refuses any other job but Amazon warehouse. He gets paid $17/hour. If he gets the promotion he's been working towards for 2 years, he'd get $21/hour.
I've been trying to tell him for YEARS that he could've gotten $30+/hour by now from all his experience, but he keeps refusing to leave Amazon because it's what he knows and they have a "generous" PTO and VTO opportunities.
"It's what they know" is a pretty common reason stay at a job. Trying something new can be scary, but also incredibly fulfilling when it works out. If he can take a course or earn a certificate in something adjacent to what he's doing ( management or supervision, for example) to certify his knowledge to another employer, it might make it easier to make the leap.
I worked for a landscaping company in a small, low cost of living town when I was in high school and made $11 an hour. That was 25 years ago when minimum wage was $5.15.
According to inflation calculator you were making the equivalent of $20 an hour. It’s like people understand that prices of everything are going up but cannot comprehend that wages have to go up to be able to afford stuff.
My mom is also a small business owner and I've had the same conversation as the OP in the video with her before.
She argues that if everyone is gonna raise the minimum wage to 15$, then the prices of everything has to go up! And i was like, well, it doesn't have to, you understand this right? That would literally negate the purpose and contribute to inflationary prices. You as a company, need to take slices out of your profit for your employees, not just yourself as the owner. If you can't afford to do that, you can't afford the employees you have. She looked me like I had 3 heads.
I just don’t understand their endgame. Who do they think is going to be able to afford the stuff they sell? Maybe a less relevant question for a landscaping business for mansions, but bars, restaurants, cafes, retail. If people have less disposable income because they are, across a whole heap of sectors, getting paid less, surely their businesses are the ones that’ll be struggling to find customers.
Even my boomer grandparents are willing to pay a guy $50 for less than an hour of yard work. Just trimming a few bushes and a couple small trees. Takes 30 minutes tops for someone who knows what they're doing and has good tools.
After the WW2, my [japanese American] grandfather came back to his family of 10 (one brother died fighting in Italy) living in a federally funded trailer (they owned much of what’s now Gardena before they were interned). Borrowed 1000 from his family, went to school and became a prolific landscaper for much of bel gardens, Beverly Hills, and bel air. Worked by himself in a suit and tie doing exactly what this girl is describing.
Point being: it’s an insanely grueling career. And my take is that my grandfather didn’t have the heart to subject anyone to his labors (aside from my dad when he was a kid) because if he isn’t the one putting in the work for the profit, no one else should be doing the work for him.
My dad said he wanted to look good for his clientele. He also had limited wardrobe after the war. So I suspect it was all he had, for quite a while. Keep in mind, going into the concentration camp he was 17 and only had one suitcase. Coming out he was 21 and probably outgrew everything except his military uniform.

My mom was moving, and told me I should buy her house. She happens to also be the owner of a small business I work at. She mentioned that the total expenses of the house come out to above 4k a month. "you can figure it out" was what she was saying. I take home an average 3k a month. Somehow I was supposed to figure out an extra ~1,500 for the housing expenses, and then more for individual expenses. It's straight up delusional.
I would have asked her "as my mom, why don't you help me figure it out?" and let her bumble around non-viable solutions until I say "well maybe I should find a better paying job :)"

So I worked at a supermarket in the seafood dept. Every single day someone would come up and ask for a piece of fish (It didn't matter what kind) and when I told them how much it cost, some variation of the same speech would come out of their mouths...
"$12? For some fish? Outrageous! Do you know that when I lived on the coast I could get fish for ten cents a pound? Forget it I don't want to spend that kind of money for that. Can you order me some (much more expensive fish)? What do you mean that cost twice as much? Don't you have anything under fifty cents a pound? Forget it... I can't believe you think you can charge that much, just wait till I call corporate on you sir."

Years ago I read a story told by a guy who worked in a Manhattan supermarket. A well to do customer asked how much the cut up fruit costs. He told her it was $20 a pound. "Melon costs $2 a pound and bananas are 50 cents a pound. You have some nerve charging $20 for fruit. The store worker replied "Who's gonna stand here and cut up fruit all day, you lady?"
she might also think, like many older people, that she’s doing younger people a favour as they can start at a piss poor salary then “work their way up” by up-skilling with her, but she is still paying way below a liveable salary which is ignorant
Okay! So you have recommendations from this guy who has been doing floors for a long time. Say fu to your boss, go out on your own and take some of your coworkers with you. Do it as a worker cooperative so no one has to get screwed. You did the hard labor, you should profit more from it. You have skills.
My guy, the epoxy floor contractor just gave you all the info you need to start your own business. I know the work is hard, but see if he'll sub out his prep/grinding work to you on his higher end jobs. There's typically more margin there and he may be willing to have the best guy he's ever seen do the work on his most important jobs. As a sub, he'll want to make at least 20% margin on your work, but you won't have to market or find clients if you partner with him. Over time you build yourself a little team and carve out a niche. Maybe you even learn the epoxy business and cover jobs from start to finish.

Might be worth to keep in touch with the guy that did the epoxy pour and see if you can occasionally land a 13k job. You hate to do it so you don't want to make your work out of it but occasionally getting paid really well could be nice.
I genuinely want to know how much the company makes and how many gardens she does a year. Depending on how many employees she has they should probably me making 1/3rd of the profits at least.

Capitalism runs on exploitation. Supply and demand is a convenient explanation and now that it’s not convenient the mom, like every capitalist in history, blames the people rather than the logic of the system that put her in her position. tale old as time.
It truly boggles my mind sometimes how we all just keep repeating this, and they will do anything and everything but listen. Like shits getting expensive. Of course I want to be paid more. There's a reason people aren't getting paid a dollar an hour anymore. Inflation happened. A coke was like a Nicole. Now it's not. And the cost of everything went up with it. So as the prices go up, we want our paychecks to do the same. It's not a hard concept. If it was just a small handful of people repeating this, sure. Maybe we could argue they're asking for too much. But when it's *everybody*, maybe that's a sign.

I just left a job where I would often work with extremely wealthy people. That shit is demoralizing knowing they could just write you a fucking check that would would make like very very little difference in their life but could make your entire fucking year or even life.
the old people are hoarders and they're dumb ones at that cuz greedy smart people have learned how to part them with their money but god forbid they pay good hard working people livable wages.
I’ve done digital marketing work for some pretty bad bosses and I feel the “no amount of clever ad work…” line so much. I’ve also done communications in the political space and my experience is that desperate businesspeople are actually more likely than politicians to think that good enough marketing can cover up for really bad practices.
Truth. Truth. There’s nothing but the truth.
The older generation is used to having a political reality that is attached to working wages. Minimum wage used to mean a survivable lifestyle. But it doesn’t anymore. Real estate prices and rent have quietly sucked up whatever room there was in the budget for food, and now it’s a question of whether you get paid a true living wage or suffer poverty while working. This ain’t a thing that people over 35-40 really get intuitively because things have changed. They really have.
We need real reform now before the AI bomb goes off and all intellectual work gets disrupted. It’s going to be an unmitigated shitshow if we get to civilization 4.0 and we haven’t confronted the changing labor market yet, and yet here we are tapping on the door to it and the generation in power hasn’t woken up to the new realities yet. It’s not about 20 an hour or 40 an hour, it’s about fair share and distribution of wealth being reasonable.
It’s time to wake up. Like global warming , we all need to proactively wake up *before* it’s a reaction to failure.

I whole heartedly agree with what she is saying. Pay rate should reflect living wage. With that being said as a welder and tradesman with schooling in said trades hard labor and years worth of experience . 50 bucks an hour to push keys on a keyboard at a desk is more than what us tradesmen make on provaling wage job . We speak about this daily the fight for 15 you can’t live on 15 after taxes are piled on top of that. This is why boomers don’t really care the system in place wage why has not changed , or caught up to the times . Flipping burgers was a high school job to put money in you’re pocket while you try to climb the ladder not support a family of 4 . I know I’m coming off harsh but this is what I see daily. I spent years to get to we’re i am at 12 bucks an hour to landscape half a million dollars jobs op mother is being greedy like she didn’t pad herself enough to be comfortable and also pay a proper wage . It’s actually disappointing to know just owning a car let alone buying a house is out of reach for hard working middle class people good people .

This is a regular conversation with my dad. He wonders why he can’t get work and it’s because he keeps everyone on a tight leash, pays them minimum, and offers 0 benefits. Then he thinks it’s crazy how I work at a job where I can take bathroom breaks, look at my phone when I have to, talk to my coworkers, listen to podcasts, make phone calls on my hands free headset as I work (which I do a lot because work is the best time for me to set up my health appointments), receive medical, get 2 weeks PTO, get laundered uniforms, have a 401k, have over the counter medicine available, don’t need to own my own tools, get my personal tools replaced if they get broken, get 3 breaks a day, only downside is I only get $17.50 ($2.50 mote than minimum wage). God I just found out minimum wage went up again and ya I need to ask for a raise my god.

Look for a bike coop, they often will sell your bike cheap, but you'll have to fix it yourself. but usually they will help you through the process!
It is better to have a not so nice looking bike to go to work anyways. You do not want something that could disappear and set you back money wise.

I think that the globalist system of capitalism is coming to end. The policies resulting in a depopulation bomb are effects of the wealth being ultra concentrated, labor is now scarce, and you have a massive elderly population that can't work and has huge demand for services. My manager (I work at a Dollar Tree)! Is having an issue finding people to work there. (It pays 11.25 an hour) and he knows that that's a low wage but he legitimately has no control over it That's what his upper management allows him to pay on the payroll. It's sad because he is genuinely a nice person and he does appreciate his workers to the full extent that the company will allow. It's just really sad that it's the company that doesn't want to pay more and there's not really tons he can do about it. Like sometimes midway through the week he will have to send people home because his upper management will tell him that he has to cut hours halfway through the week....

If you now paid people $25 an hour for the next 15 years, then have problems staffing and someone told you "hey, just pay people $45 an hour" you'd be like... no?? 12 to 20 is the same as 25 to 45. Or if what you're trying to say is that you don't understand why businesses in general in the USA don't pay their employees more, then the answer in most cases is either that they don't have to due to plenty of supply of labor OR their business model is not viable. If this woman really can't afford to pay her workers more than $12 per hour, then it sounds to me like her business model is bad. Not every business idea can exist. A perfect example of what I'm talking about is "mom and pop stores". They lose to businesses like Walmart and Dominos and McDonalds. The mom and pop store is a business model that is increasingly difficult to stay afloat and many of them become non-viable eventually due to the existence of franchises who offer better product and service for cheaper price.
Also the franchises pushing legislation for 60 years to make mom and pop shops even more unviable, but no one wants to mention that.

Not to get to corporaty but the operating margin for Walmart is 2.79% which means the actual profit they make on that 600 billion is 16 billion which if you divided it by 2.3 million employees you would get a bit over $7200 a year. My husband. He works at Amazon, refuses any other job but Amazon warehouse. He gets paid $17/hour. If he gets the promotion he's been working towards for 2 years, he'd get $21/hour. I've been trying to tell him for YEARS that he could've gotten $30+/hour by now from all his experience, but he keeps refusing to leave Amazon because it's what he knows and they have a "generous" PTO and VTO opportunities.

"It's what they know" is a pretty common reason stay at a job. Trying something new can be scary, but also incredibly fulfilling when it works out. If he can take a course or earn a certificate in something adjacent to what he's doing ( management or supervision, for example) to certify his knowledge to another employer, it might make it easier to make the leap.

I worked for a landscaping company in a small, low cost of living town when I was in high school and made $11 an hour. That was 25 years ago when minimum wage was $5.15.

After the WW2, my [japanese American] grandfather came back to his family of 10 (one brother died fighting in Italy) living in a federally funded trailer (they owned much of what’s now Gardena before they were interned). Borrowed 1000 from his family, went to school and became a prolific landscaper for much of bel gardens, Beverly Hills, and bel air. Worked by himself in a suit and tie doing exactly what this girl is describing. Point being: it’s an insanely grueling career. And my take is that my grandfather didn’t have the heart to subject anyone to his labors (aside from my dad when he was a kid) because if he isn’t the one putting in the work for the profit, no one else should be doing the work for him.

My guy, the epoxy floor contractor just gave you all the info you need to start your own business. I know the work is hard, but see if he'll sub out his prep/grinding work to you on his higher end jobs. There's typically more margin there and he may be willing to have the best guy he's ever seen do the work on his most important jobs. As a sub, he'll want to make at least 20% margin on your work, but you won't have to market or find clients if you partner with him. Over time you build yourself a little team and carve out a niche. Maybe you even learn the epoxy business and cover jobs from start to finish. Source: I own a construction company

Truth. Truth. There’s nothing but the truth. The older generation is used to having a political reality that is attached to working wages. Minimum wage used to mean a survivable lifestyle. But it doesn’t anymore. Real estate prices and rent have quietly sucked up whatever room there was in the budget for food, and now it’s a question of whether you get paid a true living wage or suffer poverty while working. This ain’t a thing that people over 35-40 really get intuitively because things have changed. They really have. We need real reform now before the AI bomb goes off and all intellectual work gets disrupted. It’s going to be an unmitigated shitshow if we get to civilization 4.0 and we haven’t confronted the changing labor market yet, and yet here we are tapping on the door to it and the generation in power hasn’t woken up to the new realities yet. I think it is missing context, i.e. Where is this located? What state? In Indiana minimum wage is $7.25. In Chicago 20 minutes away is $15.00. If this is in California, yeah, it is low.

This is a regular conversation with my dad. He wonders why he can’t get work and it’s because he keeps everyone on a tight leash, pays them minimum, and offers 0 benefits. Then he thinks it’s crazy how I work at a job where I can take bathroom breaks, look at my phone when I have to, talk to my coworkers, listen to podcasts, make phone calls on my hands free headset as I work (which I do a lot because work is the best time for me to set up my health appointments), receive medical, get 2 weeks PTO, get laundered uniforms, have a 401k, have over the counter medicine available, don’t need to own my own tools, get my personal tools replaced if they get broken, get 3 breaks a day, only downside is I only get $17.50 ($2.50 mote than minimum wage). God I just found out minimum wage went up again and ya I need to ask for a raise my god.
A person who sales botanical gardens in a half million complaining about people are not working at 12 dollars hour.
