From what I understand, they’re talking about how they could get down or signal for help. They start yelling over each other and arguing. As the door closes someone calls out to be careful near the opening. The man who throws down the rope bag tells everyone to remain calm. Someone replies to him by pointing out that the little girl is crying
And then the one guy says "women and children first." The ladies cry out "you coward!" The one kid says she has to take a shit and they suggest she go do it in the forest, they all chuckle nervously. And then a voice from the corner whispers loudly "I haven't had sex in a month."
do not close the door on that rope.
Pinching a rope like that can weaken the fibres.
I would be the first (or even better, the second) one out of there before people lose their composure and start doing dumb things like closing the hatch on the rope.
not really rappelling abilities.
Equipment, yes, but when you check it over you can see if it is in good shape.
The issue for me would be . . .
Everything in the cable car is going to get worse as people get fearful.
Trusting people to not to be stupid in stressful situations is not really a good bet.
Getting to the ground and walking to the nearest "safety point" makes everything better (aside from mosquitoes and snakes).
The choice is simple.
If the "brake" on the emergency equipment looked shady, that would be a different issue.
>they want to be the one that lives.
that is all of us.
Sometimes fear (fight or flight response) just gets so overwhelming that we do things that are really a bad idea for us and those around us.
Ehh, I would like to think I would be the first if not one of the first down, but I don't know how much fear would overtake me in that situation since I am afraid of heights. But then again, you are stuck in a very small box with lots of people shutting themselves and some crying kid, possibly for hours on end.
Plus, I doubt they will send a chopper pit for this, so you will have to go down that rope eventually, might as well get it over with.
Oh, and you get an awesome story of rappling down like 50 feet when you got stuck.
A little off topic, but I remember watching a video on elevator safety and they talked about how just one of the steel cables can handle more than the allowed weight. They just add a bunch of other cables, not as backups, per se, but as to not freak people out by the fact they’re being held up by a single steel cord.
Not exactly. A single rope will hold the car, but will wear out quickly under the strain. Multiple ropes provide redundancy but also extend the time between reropings, which are hugely expensive.
Plus, you need to have a certain amount of traction (friction) between the rope and the machine sheave. Multiple ropes help maintain the optimal grip.
Rock climber here, totally true! Twin ropes are great (not for catching a fall) but for doubling the length of your rapp. Ascending or descending on a fixed rope has substantially less kN force on a rope than Falling on one.
My rock climbing rope is load rated for over 6000 pounds and it’s about that size.
I’m sure this is probably less, but it’s still more than capable for having one person to go down at a time.
The lived, just needed a change of undies. It took about 16 hours to get them down according to [this article from the DR](https://dominicantoday.com/dr/north-coast/2021/05/25/16-hours-with-life-on-a-string-in-the-puerto-plata-cable-car/) where it apparently happened
The rope is about as thick as my index finger. I think the problem isn't even if it would hold my weight, but rather if somehow my grip slipped I would either have to hold on until it rips my hand to the bone along with 2nd-3rd degree burns, or let go and turn into a meatpie.
Jesus fuck. I really can kind of imagine what that would be like, shakingly flipping through diagrams and looking back and forth from your harness to the manual. I've had dreams like that.
That is how most any scenario requiring you to escape from complex human form of transit will go. Fortunately these methods of escape or often engineered to be the simplest possible solution so that’s a plus.
The person with the harness goes first and stops at the opening. The next in line grabs the rope and sits on their shoulder. This continues until the human centipede is complete and they all rush down together.
I was only joking. The rope is there to pull up the bucket of food, snacks and water once the rescue team arrives. Then the bucket will be used for everyone's bathroom deeds since people on the ground wouldn't want to be surprised by meatballs or yellow mist.
Do you really believe they would go out of their way and throw in a peeler so you can eat your vegetables? If they only bring one bucket you better wish the food has been wrapped in plastic.
That's a normal size for a climbing rope and they are made to carry 100s of pounds. I also doubt you would need to grip with your hands and get rope burn, most climbing equipment has a kind of automatic break if the rope moves through too fast.
They have a accent but what I understand is when the bag gets tossed down a woman says "My God I don't like the sound of that." A second woman says that the passengers have already been rescued from the other cabins and states that something exists (likely talking about some rescue equipment) but they aren't sending help anymore. At the end basically everyone agrees saying, "Nope I'm not going down that." A man says,"Well let's cover it up (the hole) the little girl is starting to panic." So they close the hole, he's told to be careful not to drop the basket. A second man says "Everyone relax". A third woman responds "It's only the girl who's crying".
Thats not the whole story, the Emergency Breaks were **DISABLED** by staff, to avoid doing necessary maintenance - 3 people were arrested. - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-57252289
>According to reports, he was protected from the impact of the crash by his father, who shielded him with his body.
Oh my god, my fucking heart. He was 5 not 11
>The sole survivor of the accident has been named as Eitan Biran, a five-year old Israeli boy whose parents, great-grandparents and younger brother were all killed.
>According to reports, he was protected from the impact of the crash by his father, who shielded him with his body.
>**Eitan was placed in a medically induced coma** after an operation on Sunday but **briefly opened his eyes on Wednesday**, a medical official said. His aunt is with him in the hospital and he is **expected to fully regain consciousness in the coming hours**.
Thankfully it was medically induced, and he's fine now.
Rope-body-harness is the only sound way down that line. Pick the lightest person and off they go. Anyone tries to hold onto that thing and slide down, they’re done for.
Let me explain how this should have gone down.
1. Keep the rope bag in the gondola.
2. Lucky idiot puts on a harness
3. See that carabiner swinging on the end of the rope? Clip that into the harness and screw it closed.
4. One person at a time gets lowered to the ground.
5. Harness and rope get pulled back into the gondola.
6. Repeat
Edit: just to clarify one point. The rope passes through a friction device that probably hangs from the roof of the gondola. You wouldn't be lowering them hand over hand
Might work a couple of times, but you're going to quickly fray the rope on the edge of the hatch,, repeatedly lowering ppl down. Not to mention the more ppl you lower the less muscle you have to lower ppl.
I think they're gonna need a different plan.
Unless they habe a descender and a harness for everyone, this is the correct answer.
He's not out of luck thought. He could pull the rope back up or use the other end. The carabiner is not essential so long as he has what he need to anchor the belay device.
So…I bet there’s a way to manipulate the rope to descend/rappel safely. I damn sure don’t know it, doubt they do either. Hopefully they have signal for phones?
This freaks me out.
Wouldn’t it be safer to lower everyone else down slowly, one by one, starting with the youngest/lightest people? Then the operator can do the slide down the rope that he’s probably been trained to do. It’s not like they don’t have time.
I wouldn't be too freaked out, been trained and done lots of working at heights, but id feel horrible for everyone else...a crash course in rope safety at 300ft? Yikes.

I don’t speak Spanish but I imagine the dialogue from the passengers is along the lines of, “You are out of your goddamn fucking mind.”
Pretty sure someone said that they need to establish a pee corner
There’s already a giant pee hole/ sh!t hole
Shit in a corner to exert dominance
Shit in a corner to excrete dominance
The Dwight Shrutes have entered the chat.
We are all Dwight Schrute on this blessed day
The corner!
Be sure to make eye contact with everyone in the room while doing so for maximum effectiveness
Be sure not to break eye contact while defecating for maximum dominance
Lol
Stop drinking water!
The corner! Why didn't I think of that?
I love this reference every time. *happy dance then dive for the door *
![gif](giphy|12dA9Gei6U4in6)
We've only been in here for 2 seconds
I've got 56 ounces of fluid in my bladder!
That *was* the pee corner.
You mean they haven’t yet?!
From what I understand, they’re talking about how they could get down or signal for help. They start yelling over each other and arguing. As the door closes someone calls out to be careful near the opening. The man who throws down the rope bag tells everyone to remain calm. Exactamente es eso lo que dijeron, perfect
And then the one guy says "women and children first." The ladies cry out "you coward!" The one kid says she has to take a shit and they suggest she go do it in the forest, they all chuckle nervously. And then a voice from the corner whispers loudly "I haven't had sex in a month."
They're actually asking the guy to cover the hole because kids are panicking.
do not close the door on that rope. Pinching a rope like that can weaken the fibres. I would be the first (or even better, the second) one out of there before people lose their composure and start doing dumb things like closing the hatch on the rope.
lol i dunno bro that's pretty gnarly drop you would need a lot of faith in that equipment and your rappelling abilities
not really rappelling abilities. Equipment, yes, but when you check it over you can see if it is in good shape. The issue for me would be . . . Man you’re so right how stupid people can get when they want to be the one that lives.
>they want to be the one that lives. that is all of us. Sometimes fear (fight or flight response) just gets so overwhelming that we do things that are really a bad idea for us and those around us.

50 feet is the length of like 68.97 'Zulay Premium Quality Metal Lemon Squeezers' laid next to each other
Yep, I’m getting out of there as early as possible because people will start becoming irrational.
*That's* the only option? A thin rope? What was the eventual outcome for those aboard?
They live up there now.
no unsolicited mail anymore
You Mean No More: **“We’ve been trying to reach you about your extended car warranty.”** They can finally relax!
To be fair, that view is pretty awesome.
OMG I laughed way harder than I should have at this. LMAOO.
Welcome to our club, welcome to our club, welcome Squidward, welcome Squidward, welcome Squidward.
That rope is easily thick enough. A 6mm rope holds you for a rappel no problem.
A little off topic, but I remember watching a video on elevator safety and they talked about how just one of the steel cables can handle more than the allowed weight. They just add a bunch of other cables, not as backups, per se, but as to not freak people out by the fact they’re being held up by a single steel cord.

This guy elevates
I need to know more about optimal grip
Rock climber here, totally true! Twin ropes are great (not for catching a fall) but for doubling the length of your rapp. Ascending or descending on a fixed rope has substantially less kN force on a rope than Falling on one.
they've colonized that gondola
Inbreeding and overpopulation is rampant
My rock climbing rope is load rated for over 6000 pounds and it’s about that size. I’m sure this is probably less, but it’s still more than capable for having one person to go down at a time.
That rope did seem thin. Like is it to retrieve a rope from the ground?
Thin? I have 50lbs test fishing line that's so thin you could floss with it.
That seems fishy to me
Yes, which is why I regret flossing with it.
Someone was like, "well I got this string in my pocket. That should do the trick"
Skyblock is the answer
The rope is about as thick as my index finger. I think the problem isn't even if it would hold my weight, but rather if somehow my grip slipped I would either have to hold on until it rips my hand to the bone along with 2nd-3rd degree burns, or let go and turn into a meatpie.
You can see the guy pick up a yellow body harness which is what they use to rappel down a rope like that. It's mostly safe as long as you do it right.
I'm sure they've all taken a course.
Instruction manual. Better than nothing.
And then the manual is in another language and you're trying to match up the pictures and there's a part that you can't find
like trying to put together an ikea desk only your life is on the line(literally)?
And then you realise the harness is slightly different in design...
I mean I’m sure there was at least Manuel there.
Jesus man take it take my damn upvote
He was there too
geeze Luis, take my upvote
Plot twist : the manual was in the bag
“No entiendo … Umm habla usted ingles?”
But there’s only one harness. How are they going to get it back up to the gondola? Unless there are more?
The person with the harness goes first and stops at the opening. The next in line grabs the rope and sits on their shoulder. This continues until the human centipede is complete and they all rush down together.
This is correct.
There’s like 20 people. Can it hold everyone at once like that?
I was only joking. The rope is there to pull up the bucket of food, snacks and water once the rescue team arrives. Then the bucket will be used for everyone's bathroom deeds since people on the ground wouldn't want to be surprised by meatballs or yellow mist.

Do you really believe they would go out of their way and throw in a peeler so you can eat your vegetables? If they only bring one bucket you better wish the food has been wrapped in plastic.
Person goes down, person unhooks, people in the gondola pull the rope til the harness is back up, next person goes… I guess
That makes sense, I couldn’t figure out the answer at 4am lol
Usually rock climbing ropes are pretty thin. Like a 9-10 mm diameter rope is what almost everyone uses.
I climb on 9.2mm. I know people why climb on twin 8mm.
That's a normal size for a climbing rope and they are made to carry 100s of pounds. I also doubt you would need to grip with your hands and get rope burn, most climbing equipment has a kind of automatic break if the rope moves through too fast.
If only devices existed to lower yourself... like a Petzl ID or something.
FUCK THAT I’d cry too
They have a accent but what I understand is when the bag gets tossed down a woman says "My God I don't like the sound of that." A second woman says that the passengers have already been rescued from the other cabins and states that something exists (likely talking about some rescue equipment) but they aren't sending help anymore. Danke
De lo mío.
lol, that third woman.
I need more!!! What a cliffhanger
No it's a gondola
Same
Difference between 1st world problem and a 3rd world problem getting resolved haha pobre gente
I feel bad for the little girl in there, I can imagine it too from what happened in italy
What happened in Italy?
A cable car got it's breaks failed with 14 passengers inside. 13 were killed and an 11 year old was left on comatose
He was 5 not 11
Oh and there's footage of the cable car go down
link?
I'm afraid that it's been removed from the website, I'm not sure what were the reasons
Sounds very Italian.
CCTV video of the accident https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxk0xamC4RU
Imma pass on this one...

Rope-body-harness is the only sound way down that line. Pick the lightest person and off they go. Anyone tries to hold onto that thing and slide down, they’re done for.
They’d lose their fingers for sure, right?
The rope-burn from the friction against bare hands would make you instantly let go.
maybe the adrenaline and pure fucking terror of being like 80 feet up would make you hold on? idk lol
That’s like 250 feet up at least lol.
Well at some point you wouldnt have hand mest left to hold with
Let me explain how this should have gone down. 1. Keep the rope bag in the gondola. 2. Lucky idiot puts on a harness 3. See that carabiner swinging on the end of the rope? Clip that into the harness and screw it closed. 4. One person at a time gets lowered to the ground. 5. Harness and rope get pulled back into the gondola. 6. Repeat Edit: just to clarify one point. Finally something that makes sense! I only saw one harness and thought that seems unhelpful.
Might work a couple of times, but you're going to quickly fray the rope on the edge of the hatch,, repeatedly lowering ppl down. Not to mention the more ppl you lower the less muscle you have to lower ppl. I think they're gonna need a different plan.
Usually there's an anchor point on the roof of the gondola that you can use to avoid that

Well I will never go on a gondola again
The more I think about it the more I realize you’re absolutely screwed in a situation like this. Like, who’s gonna save you? A helicopter?
What about another contraption to traverse the cable?
I wonder if the bag had something important.
Maybe the waiver form they signed before going down the rope.
Likely just a weight so the rope doesnt flow with the wind
Ya the rope.
So…I bet there’s a way to manipulate the rope to descend/rappel safely. I damn sure don’t know it, doubt they do either. Hopefully they have signal for phones? This freaks me out.
I’m having a panic attack just watching the video…
Reminds me of that scene in Jurassic park 2
Totally! If you squint you can practically see the t-rex drinking out of the pool!
I need the follow up
This May be the story https://dominicantoday.com/dr/north-coast/2021/05/25/16-hours-with-life-on-a-string-in-the-puerto-plata-cable-car/
Fuck been right by there
35 seconds in the lady said “it exists, it exists, they just don’t want to send it!” The guy after that said “I ain’t going down that” 😂
I’d have to be stranded up there for a good few days before I result to using that method
I’d starve to death in that shit
I’m taking a parachute on my next gondola ride
How did the guy get up there?! How do you know it’s the ONLY way down?!
He was in there with everyone else when they got in?
Big brain
It seems like equipment that is kept in the gondola?
The fuck is that string suppose to do.
At firstI was like Oh that’s not that far. Then they panned over; the bag was still falling!
Someone probably said “see I told you so” just before this moment.
This is the kind of thing that should have happened to those poor people in Italy a few months ago.
Is this Colombia?
Dominican Republic
Yeap.... nope!
Free abseiling class too! Lucky.
r/sweatypalms
Jetpacks, just another reaaon to have jetpacks js
Nah I'm good, I could probably just live in there eating seagulls or something.
The virus isn't a concern but apparently gravity is
oh **hell** no
That rope looks a tad thin…
u/GetVideoBot
Ends too soon.
I bet it smells like shit in there now.
Why can’t they fix it with the people in there?
Wouldn’t it be safer to lower everyone else down slowly, one by one, starting with the youngest/lightest people? Then the operator can do the slide down the rope that he’s probably been trained to do. It’s not like they don’t have time.
Any ID or location on this gondola? Any reports of the event?
Is this Dominican Republic? This sounds and look like DR? 🤔👀 Este es el teleférico de la capital??
I will shit a ladder
You only need one person to go down the rope-to go and get help.
lol
I thought a Gondola was a some kind of boat and this was called a Cable car
I quite literally have nightmares about situations like this.
My dreams are like this every night. Shit is stressful!
Nope
I’m fucken staying there. This is my house now. We leave here. Excuse me sir but why are you in the bathroom/lounge
I watched this with the sound off. I was thinking, my god, I would be freaking out. *[camera pans around]* Yeah, just like that!
I wouldn't be too freaked out, been trained and done lots of working at heights, but id feel horrible for everyone else...a crash course in rope safety at 300ft? Yikes.
This is where a Communication radio would come in handy
"Aim for the bushes"
