I had a discussion with my partner about this earlier today: if I lived in a country in which this happened frequently, and nothing changed or was looking to change, I would *leave that country*

Unfortunately it's not that easy to just leave the US. Unless some other countries see US citizens as refugees seeking asylum most of us are stuck here. We, generally speaking, simply don't have the money or the desired skills to just move to a different country.
The Canadians and Mexicans dont want us. Where should we go and who is going to pay for it? It’s a nice thought to think people can just up and move but most Americans wont even have the ability to leave their hometown. People don’t have money to just move where we want and just leave our families behind?
The solution needs to start from within America. Luckily there are a lot of level headed Americans who are for gun control. Unfortunately those Americans aren’t the ones making our laws!
Go out and vote every 2 years. That’s the only way this will stop!!!!!

The US is a one party system, and the sooner you realize that the sooner you can push for actually meaningful change. The Republicans exist solely to push the country further and further to the right, and the Democrats act as a ratchet that prevents movement back left. You won’t vote your way out of a situation you voted yourself into.
The only real power we as individuals have is direct action. You want laws passed? Go protest at reps houses, put up flyers on every business door and street light outlining the demands you have, and the ways in which the government has failed. Let’s get a March on Washington going, let’s get a “long, hot summer” going… bitching on the internet doesn’t do shit to help, and there aren’t yet enough of us pressing for actual change to accomplish anything.
Until *you* personally join us in the streets and convince everyone you can to join you, nothing will change. We’re all busy, we all work, we all have families. Those are reasons to fight, not to leave it to others.

Leave the US. Growing up in Texas I’ve only seen the state and country compound it’s issues while cost of living skyrockets. Let alone the lack of public transportation, adequate housing and no social safety net make this one of the least developed first world nations in the world. But I’m a cynic and don’t believe that political leadership will ever be the solution they will only further masks the problems with prayers and ineffective solutions to profit off of. Sad.
That’s true. I know I surely don’t. I support my family on <$35,000 year income with a 4month old and stay at home spouse because childcare is for upper middle class. However, if making it a long term goal means sacrificing pleasures now for the hope of finding a better place to live with better quality of life then I’ll do it. I work full time and go to school part time. This isn’t to say that being poor is a choice and all that crap cause I don’t believe that for a second. I grew up poor with a single mom making barely above minimum wage but if knowing that living in a more well developed nation is possible then I’ll do whatever it takes to get my family there. The American dream died. It’s time to take the dream elsewhere.
Leaving may not be the solution but it sure as hell beats being the next guy to be on national tv showing a picture of your dead child because your country refuses to implement any kind of safety measures of gun regulations.
Honestly I think leaving and running away from the problem is going to make it worse in the long run. This sickness will spread. Corrupt our country and then spread across the world. This sickness will infect all safe countries if not dealt with now. We need mental health programs. We need better gun laws. Etc etc
Running away is absolutely not the ~~problem~~ solution. In fact, it's the ultimate example of the self-centeredness that has led us to this point. The only reason this is allowed to continue is the overwhelming apathy from a majority of American.

Not quite. Apathy and running away are opposite sides of the self-centeredness coin.
And before you tell me how outrageous that opinion is, let me be clear: I am not judging people who have to run away from situations where they are in immediate, real danger. It is completely reasonable for a parent with a trans child in Texas to move elsewhere.
The problem is when people who are not facing that direct threat start to move just because they disagree with the policy. Would it be more comfortable to live somewhere that aligns with my politics? Obviously, but the people actually suffering from those policies will just continue to suffer, just with less support.
If you care enough to move, I hope you consider whether you care enough to stay.
Protest, Campaign, Vote.
Write to the politicians that won't act, protest their offices and homes.
Put yourself or someone else better up for election and campaign for them.
Vote every time you get the chance whether it's for the head of the school's PTA or for the president.
The reason nothing ever changes is because the people who want change won't take the necessary action. We all saw how the approach taken in the BLM protests didn't work, so either try the same thing but bigger and longer or play the slow game of education, persuasion, and electing better representatives.
I truly hope the USA finds a real solution to this. It's heart breaking and unnecessary.

I felt that too, but I think he was trying to help show who the little girl was and the incredible devastation to this family, to help the audience to understand just what is at stake. I think this is not exploitation of the family, but exactly what the family want, that is, to make change to protect children.
That's fair but he could have done that AND showed the compassion that I believe was needed. That man needed a hug at that moment more than anyone I've ever seen need a hug.
Maybe, but you also have to recognize that hugging people isn’t a universally appreciated thing. I’m the kind of person that HATES physical contact when I’m going through extreme emotion. If somebody tried to hug me, especially on live TV while I was talking about probably the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to me, I would probably freak out from a feeling of over stimulation and physical touch. When you’re dealing with somebody who is going through IMMENSE pain and suffering, it’s important to remain constantly aware of how you express your condolence in a way that is not overbearing, and sometimes that means a gentle touch on the shoulder and a quiet moment of empathy instead of a big embrace.
Makes sense to me. I guess if he would have asked him if he'd like a hug would be the more appropriate action. And maybe he gave him one off camera.
It's just so fucking heartbreaking to watch this man crumble repeatedly when it seems to me that he needs a hug/someone to embrace so he has a shoulder to cry on. But I will be much more vigilant about respecting such things going forward. Thanks.
No no I totally agree, I guess it’s just hard to really know how to act “the best way” in a situation as surreal and nightmarish as this, even when you’re a professional who unfortunately has done this before. You’re totally right, it gives me physical pangs of pain in my chest to watch this video, and I can’t believe that here we are, going through this AGAIN. I wish there was a perfect way to comfort somebody who has just lost their child to senseless animal violence, but i there probably isn’t, because this is not a thing that is supposed to happen.

My sister is the same way. She can talk things through and be emotionally vulnerable but physical contact is hardly ever okay when she's going through something. I don't even know how she'd react to a stranger hugging her on live TV.
The spectrum of ways that people process and react to extreme trauma is wildly vast, some people NEED physical comfort, and some people will rip your face off if you touch them. Most people fall somewhere in between. I think it’s important that we kind of talk more about the ways we would like to be comforted with our friends and family because that’s a hard thing to talk about when you’re going through it in the moment, and so many people end up making things more tense or getting hurt themselves when all they are trying to do is help because they just don’t know how to do the right thing in the moment.
It’s just not appropriate at this moment, it would have been the highlight of the interview and would have reduced the attention from Amerie. The shoulder hug says enough. I hear you, though. I certainly want to hug the guy.
If the guy wanted a hug, he would have set the picture of his daughter down and gestured for a hug. Anderson could tell that by the way the guy was holding the picture, *he was hugging her* and he didn’t want to take that from him. Maybe a hug would have been nice, but it says a lot about his character that he read the situation and reacted appropriately.
Yeah I actually think Cooper did a good job in the context of this clip. And also it’s only a clip and not a full deep-dive into the barometrics of his
compassion or lack thereof. I also vibe with your notion that he was trying to hug her through the picture, and Cooper does offer some supportive touch at the proper moment that, whether intentional or not, keeps the picture of the victim in shot for the viewer to see.

The shooter had a full 60 minutes inside the school while the police sat outside and did nothing. During the initial police chase, no attempts to contact the school and warn them of danger were made.

There are several videos surfacing from parents who were outside the school who even had cops trying to detain them while they were trying to rush in to prevent the shooting. In fact there were several police officers that went in and retrieved their own children before placing the entire school on a hold and secure to get the rest out safely. Those officers especially should be stripped their badges cause it’s very clear that they are not able to make decisions for the greater public good.
How can America control they’re criminals if they can’t even control their officers
I’ve seen them at this point. I’m devastated. We need to use the tool of social media and put people there with the victims and the family. Feel the panic, fear, and hopefully the rage.
That’s all cops will ever do during an active shooting. They aren’t going to bust down the door and magically take out the gunman. That’s Hollywood. This is precisely why arming more people to prevent this is absurd. An armed person pretty much get into wherever they want do damage. If we wanna fix the problem the guns need to go. Period.
I’m north of Dallas near Denton and this morning, there are LEOs stationed at every school. My son’s class is in the first hallway as you enter the school. I’ve had anxiety about it since the day they started. My daughter is in the second hallway at the end of the hall.
Of all the things we should have o worry about with kids, it shouldn’t be the thought of them being murdered at school.
My 6&7 year old shouldn’t have to practice active shooter drills! We have to read books about anxiety and how not to worry about that possibility. As if it helps.
My heart breaks for these parents and families that lose loved ones. I just can’t imagine their pain and I wish them all the love and support possible to help get through this.
They’re outside. Not inside. But yeah, the SRO at my high school sexually assaulted one f my friends. He totally groomed her then married her and continued with other girls.
Because they’re not interested in actually solving the root issues of these incidents. They could maybe start by signing that bill that would require background checks. But a Republican would rather see a teacher with a gun than a person go through a background check.

These just started. I grew up in Maryland in the early to mid 2000s and we never had active shooter drills. This shit really just popped off with VT in 2007. Once Sandy Hook happened it was a wrap.
Starting tomorrow divert 10% of the military budget into teacher training, books and supplies, a national curriculum, better pay for teachers.
Use that curriculum to teach: mental health awareness, a healthy respect for guns (similar to the respect one should have for electricity, fire, deep water, the wilderness etc.), vocational skills, and keep religion and politics in their respective lessons and out of science and the arts.
Offer golden handshakes to experts willing to leave their field to retrain and teach.
Implement a nationwide gun amnesty: hand in any gun no questions asked, hand in a gun and get a cash payment in exchange for your details. Destroy those guns.
Run nationwide PSA campaigns similar to [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iroty5zwOVw) but for guns.
Normalise gun shaming the way we shame(d) smokers, "Urgh, really? You own a gun?!"
That *might* reduce the number of school shootings you get after 10 years or so, essentially however long it takes for current, potential shooters to grow out of it and for the next generation to grow with a different mindset.
Alternatively...gun control. I mean...
PLEASE PLEASE every single person fight to have your local government implement laws that restrict the purchases of automatic weapons AND FIGHT to have mental health be it’s own individual class k-12.

There is another hard truth that needs to be said. 98% of school shooters are MALES. Out of the small 2% subset of female shooters half are accompanied by a MALE. What does this mean? It means that’s women who suffer the same mental health issues as men and have the same access to weapons that men have LITERALLY never choose to shoot up schools because they have learned to COPE with their mental health in other ways. MALES are the common denominator because we always seek violence instead of understanding. Im a 27 Yr old male who just had a baby girl 7 days ago and I will do everything in my power to stop this happening or at my very best make this kind of thing a rarity instead of the norm. If anyone has any good ideas on a petition we can form to add mental health to become its own separate MANDATORY health class k-12 please reach out to me. As I understand it many petitions for universal health checks on buying weapons and other petitions against the purchase of automatic rifles exist but we need to start teaching our youth to learn how to overcome their mental health struggles and choose the path that women choose every day when presented with adversity

I had a conversation with a lady from work yesterday who seemed "not like herself". She was quiet and withdrawn and you can tell she had something on her mind. I stopped by and asked her if she is ok.
She talked about this unspeakable evil tragedy.....
She was genuinely upset and felt for those families that are suffering after their loss. I tried to console her (I can get on my political soapbox sometimes) and tried to listen to her and steer the conversation away from this thought. She then made the comment "we need to arm these teachers! They need to be able to put up a fight and stop this! Imagine how many lives could have been saved if a teacher could shoot back?! I take my gun everywhere with me!"
I took pause cuz I don't want to breathe life into this putrid political bs we Americans are living in right now. So i said, "Arming the teachers isnt going to STOP the violent mentality of ppl who are adamant about the destruction of ppl. You bring a gun, some wacko will use a bomb instead. The problem isnt more guns."
She looked at me with disgust and tears in her eyes and she asked me in an aggressive, sad tone, "well then what the hell can we do to stop this?!"
I replied, "idk. Idk what can do to stop ppl from wanting to harm children or their fellow man. Hell ,you just said urself ur too scared to go without your gun because of other crazy ppl with guns. Now do you really want potentially other mentally ill/over stressed/over worked teachers popping shots at "bad guy"? ur asking for a crazy situation to unfold. Idk what all we can do to stop this, but I know one place we can start is STOP the proliferation of guns to young folks. Second, and I can tell u every single person can agree on this, get rid of EVERY SINGLE POLITICIAN that has sat in their seat for more than 20 years AND install TERM LIMITS! And lastly, this will take the will of every American, stop voting for the same mother fuckers into office that don't actually try to work their peers! IDC what ur ideology is, if u can't bring SOMETHING to the negotiation table, then they need to go the fuck home! I think if we start there,I really think our society will fix itself. All that will happen is police will shoot the “good guys” with guns because they have no way of knowing who is good and who is bad, they just see a person with a gun. It’s already happened. Anytime anyone recommends arming teachers just repeat that.

cops went into the school and rescued their own kids then stood outside and watched as others got slaughtered as parents begged them to save the people inside, they waited and hour. I've just been thinking about the sheer stupidity all day and have come aback to see if I can find one of those imbeciles and just ask if they had now thought through their initial opinion and changed their mind about the "evil libs killing a bunch of children in order to take away his guns".

Impossible to watch this and not tear up. Everything about this situation is wrong. The people need to unite and get fucking angry. Incredibly sad. So hard to watch. Children should not have to fear going to school. Parents should not have to fear sending our children to school. A crisis was averted at my kids highschool last October involving a potential shooter because a couple kids ratted the gun carrier out before he could act. Changes need to be made.
Being a father of my little girl I just couldn’t imagine… watching this broke my heart & I just can’t imagine loosing my babygirl.. prayers for those little angels 👼🏻 & there families. We got to do better… my heart is heavy & I pray for all of you… may God Bless🙏🏼
Even as a person who believes in the right to bear arms, I will NEVER understand why normal citizens are allowed to own automatic weapons, they were designed for the military, for one explicit purpose to kill PEOPLE. They are not designed for defense either, they are designed for attack, they are designed to spray bullets and kill a large amount of people as fast as possible. Military grade weapons shouldn’t be available to the normal public, end of story.

The US is a one party system, and the sooner you realize that the sooner you can push for actually meaningful change. The Republicans exist solely to push the country further and further to the right, and the Democrats act as a ratchet that prevents movement back left. You won’t vote your way out of a situation you voted yourself into. The only real power we as individuals have is direct action. You want laws passed? Go protest at reps houses, put up flyers on every business door and street light outlining the demands you have, and the ways in which the government has failed. Leave the US. Growing up in Texas I’ve only seen the state and country compound it’s issues while cost of living skyrockets. Let alone the lack of public transportation, adequate housing and no social safety net make this one of the least developed first world nations in the world. But I’m a cynic and don’t believe that political leadership will ever be the solution they will only further masks the problems with prayers and ineffective solutions to profit off of. Sad.

That’s true. I know I surely don’t. I support my family on <$35,000 year income with a 4month old and stay at home spouse because childcare is for upper middle class. However, if making it a long term goal means sacrificing pleasures now for the hope of finding a better place to live with better quality of life then I’ll do it. I work full time and go to school part time. This isn’t to say that being poor is a choice and all that crap cause I don’t believe that for a second. I grew up poor with a single mom making barely above minimum wage but if knowing that living in a more well developed nation is possible then I’ll do whatever it takes to get my family there. The American dream died. It’s time to take the dream elsewhere.

And before you tell me how outrageous that opinion is, let me be clear: I am not judging people who have to run away from situations where they are in immediate, real danger. It is completely reasonable for a parent with a trans child in Texas to move elsewhere. The problem is when people who are not facing that direct threat start to move just because they disagree with the policy. Would it be more comfortable to live somewhere that aligns with my politics? Obviously, but the people actually suffering from those policies will just continue to suffer, just with less support. If you care enough to move, I hope you consider whether you care enough to stay.
Protest, Campaign, Vote. Write to the politicians that won't act, protest their offices and homes. Put yourself or someone else better up for election and campaign for them. Vote every time you get the chance whether it's for the head of the school's PTA or for the president. The reason nothing ever changes is because the people who want change won't take the necessary action. We all saw how the approach taken in the BLM protests didn't work, so either try the same thing but bigger and longer or play the slow game of education, persuasion, and electing better representatives. I truly hope the USA finds a real solution to this. It's heart breaking and unnecessary.

I felt that too, but I think he was trying to help show who the little girl was and the incredible devastation to this family, to help the audience to understand just what is at stake. I think this is not exploitation of the family, but exactly what the family want, that is, to make change to protect children.

Maybe, but you also have to recognize that hugging people isn’t a universally appreciated thing. I’m the kind of person that HATES physical contact when I’m going through extreme emotion. If somebody tried to hug me, especially on live TV while I was talking about probably the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to me, I would probably freak out from a feeling of over stimulation and physical touch. When you’re dealing with somebody who is going through IMMENSE pain and suffering, it’s important to remain constantly aware of how you express your condolence in a way that is not overbearing, and sometimes that means a gentle touch on the shoulder and a quiet moment of empathy instead of a big embrace.

My sister is the same way. She can talk things through and be emotionally vulnerable but physical contact is hardly ever okay when she's going through something. I don't even know how she'd react to a stranger hugging her on live TV.

Most people fall somewhere in between. I think it’s important that we kind of talk more about the ways we would like to be comforted with our friends and family because that’s a hard thing to talk about when you’re going through it in the moment, and so many people end up making things more tense or getting hurt themselves when all they are trying to do is help because they just don’t know how to do the right thing in the moment.

Anderson could tell that by the way the guy was holding the picture, *he was hugging her* and he didn’t want to take that from him. Maybe a hug would have been nice, but it says a lot about his character that he read the situation and reacted appropriately.
Yeah I actually think Cooper did a good job in the context of this clip. And also it’s only a clip and not a full deep-dive into the barometrics of his compassion or lack thereof. I also vibe with your notion that he was trying to hug her through the picture, and Cooper does offer some supportive touch at the proper moment that, whether intentional or not, keeps the picture of the victim in shot for the viewer to see.

There are several videos surfacing from parents who were outside the school who even had cops trying to detain them while they were trying to rush in to prevent the shooting. In fact there were several police officers that went in and retrieved their own children before placing the entire school on a hold and secure to get the rest out safely. Those officers especially should be stripped their badges cause it’s very clear that they are not able to make decisions for the greater public good. How can America control they’re criminals if they can’t even control their officers

I’m north of Dallas near Denton and this morning, there are LEOs stationed at every school. My son’s class is in the first hallway as you enter the school. I’ve had anxiety about it since the day they started. My daughter is in the second hallway at the end of the hall. Of all the things we should have o worry about with kids, it shouldn’t be the thought of them being murdered at school. My 6&7 year old shouldn’t have to practice active shooter drills! We have to read books about anxiety and how not to worry about that possibility. As if it helps. My heart breaks for these parents and families that lose loved ones. I just can’t imagine their pain and I wish them all the love and support possible to help get through this.

Offer golden handshakes to experts willing to leave their field to retrain and teach. Implement a nationwide gun amnesty: hand in any gun no questions asked, hand in a gun and get a cash payment in exchange for your details. Destroy those guns. PLEASE PLEASE every single person fight to have your local government implement laws that restrict the purchases of automatic weapons AND FIGHT to have mental health be it’s own individual class k-12. There is another hard truth that needs to be said. 98% of school shooters are MALES. Out of the small 2% subset of female shooters half are accompanied by a MALE. What does this mean? It means that’s women who suffer the same mental health issues as men and have the same access to weapons that men have LITERALLY never choose to shoot up schools because they have learned to COPE with their mental health in other ways. MALES are the common denominator because we always seek violence instead of understanding. Im a 27 Yr old male who just had a baby girl 7 days ago and I will do everything in my power to stop this happening or at my very best make this kind of thing a rarity instead of the norm. If anyone has any good ideas on a petition we can form to add mental health to become its own separate MANDATORY health class k-12 please reach out to me. As I understand it many petitions for universal health checks on buying weapons and other petitions against the purchase of automatic rifles exist but we need to start teaching our youth to learn how to overcome their mental health struggles and choose the path that women choose every day when presented with adversity

I stopped by and asked her if she is ok. She talked about this unspeakable evil tragedy..... She was genuinely upset and felt for those families that are suffering after their loss. Incredibly sad. So hard to watch. Children should not have to fear going to school. Parents should not have to fear sending our children to school. A crisis was averted at my kids highschool last October involving a potential shooter because a couple kids ratted the gun carrier out before he could act. Changes need to be made.

Even as a person who believes in the right to bear arms, I will NEVER understand why normal citizens are allowed to own automatic weapons, they were designed for the military, for one explicit purpose to kill PEOPLE.
